June 24, 2018 The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist Meister von Gracanica: Johannes der Täufer, about 1235 THERE’S A LOT WE DON’T KNOW about most of the people who knew Jesus on Earth—people who could observe him passing by, look into his face, ask him a question. Some of them are walk-ons. Others have only a single line. Still others may engage in an extended scene with Jesus about some specific point. But when John the Baptist appears onstage, we encounter someone whose whole story—from start to end—is illuminated through detailed encounters with the Lord.

WE’RE MOVING FORWARD with Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton CYO High

weeks ago, there have been a few interested players who have relayed their

contact information. Any others interested should contact Denny Rowe,

717-766-7783, [email protected], or pass along your contact information

to the Parish office or Welcome Desk. We intend to have a meeting with the

interested players in mid July—no specific date as yet. Parents are welcome

and encouraged to attend.

OK, THIS IS THE WEEK. If you have not yet registered for CCD 2018-2019,

savings are significant if you register this week.

OUR SENIOR SINGLES GROUP for individuals 55 years and older is heading

to the Hauser Estate Winery (off of Route 15 at the Biglerville Exit) on

Thursday, June 28. Come join us in the 360-degree glass enclosed tasting

room, with views of forests, orchards, and rolling hills; a huge outdoor patio;

a food cart with specialties; both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages; and

no-charge live, mellow entertainment. Contact Bill, 717-590-5499, or

[email protected] by June 25 if you plan to attend. Please

indicate if you are able to serve as a driver. The group will leave Saint

Elizabeth Ann Seton's parking lot at 3:15 pm. See you then for some fun!

HEALTHCARE WORKERS are expressing their interest in this new initiative.

Consider becoming a pioneer in supporting other medical providers who wish

to emulate Saint Giuseppe Moscati by praying with and for patients, and

giving positive witness to colleagues of your faith in God’s grace to work

within your patients. Interested? Contact the parish office, 717-697-2614,

[email protected], and leave your name, email address, and phone

number. When there are enough responses, we’ll find a suitable time to meet

with a representative of the Diocese of Harrisburg.

IS THERE SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT YOU? No, not your hair. (You

do look like you’ve lost some weight, though!) Actually, we’re talking about

your email. Your cellphone. Even, maybe, your address! It’s very important

for your parish to have up-to-date contact information for you—not just for

emergencies and difficult times, but so we can be sure you get all the good

news and special information about Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. People

do change email and cellphone providers from time to time, so please keep

us in the loop. You are warmly invited to stop by the Welcome Desk on

Sundays, drop off your information in the parish office, or even email Denise

Pieper at [email protected]. Thanks for providing us with the information

we need to minister to you in our parish!

FAITH MATTERS EVENING

SUMMER 2018

Our summer Seminarian Greg

Kramp will be offering 3

sessions of Faith Matters on Mondays,

July 2, 9, and 16, at 7 pm. Each session

will include about an hour of

presentation, with a half-hour for Q&A.

Monday July 2: “Why Does the Priest

Wear All Those Fancy Robes?” and Other

Liturgical Customs” This session will

cover topics from liturgical seasons and

the different meanings of liturgical

colors, to the various kinds of

vestments that are worn by bishops,

priests, and deacons, as well as the

many items which are used in the

celebration of the sacred liturgy. We

will explain the often forgotten

significance of these things with the

hope that we will grow in our love and

devotion for the sacred liturgy.

Curia and What’s with all the Different

Titles of Those Guys in the Vatican?”—

IT ALL BEGAN IN THE DOLOMITE MOUNTAINS!

This week I will have another round of spine surgery

(hopefully the last) at Holy Spirit Hospital, to deal with

the results of an accident from 2001.

At that time I was completing a doctorate in Rome,

and discussed some travel with two other priests who,

like me, loved the outdoors. We decided to do some

winter mountain hiking in the two weeks before the

spring semester began, and so at the end of January

2001 we took a train to a little town called Innichen in

northern Italy, along the Austrian border. The town is

surrounded by the beautiful Dolomite Mountains,

which were covered in snow.

With a quaint inn as our home base, we took day hikes

into the mountains. One day involved the steepest

climbs on a mountain path to the next little village and

back. As I was admiring the snowy peaks all around us,

I lost my footing on a patch of solid ice and took a

serious tumble. After what my companions rated as a

9.8 Olympic triple somersault, the fall ended when I hit

my head on a rock.

The result? Fractured vertebrae in the low back,

broken ribs, and herniated discs in the neck.

In 2007, after efforts at acupuncture, injections, and

physical therapy, a chiropractor suggested it was time

for surgery. Consultations with both a neurosurgeon

and an orthopedic surgeon suggested surgery in both

low back and neck, but I decided to put it off as long as

possible.

In 2014 it was time to fix the low back; now it’s time to

fix the neck. Prior to this fall, I enjoyed backpacking

and had hiked most of the Appalachian trail in

segments. Sadly, afterwards, my long trail

backpacking days were over. Still, the Dolomite

Mountains were beautiful, and certainly memorable!

Father King

SUPPORING FATHER KING

DURING RECOVERY Please pray

for Father as he looks to a recovery

period that involves a number of

restrictions on his schedule and physical

activity, when he would naturally wish to be

engaging fully in his priestly ministry. Some

parishioners have already asked for more ways

to help. One great way is to provide a cooked

meal during his recovery period (neck surgery

requires substantial restrictions on activities,

including cooking). In order to make things as

easy as possible for meal volunteers, here are

some helpful notes:

• Meals should be "dinner food" and will be

needed on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

from July 2 through August 31.

• Because of Father’s physical restrictions

during this time, meals should be cooked,

only needing a reheat or minimal prep (for

example, dressing needs to be added to a

salad).

• Meals should be dropped off at the parish

office, and details can be found on the

online sign-up sheet. Contact Donna

Nebistinsky ([email protected]) to make

any special arrangements.

• As much as possible, containers should be

those which do not need to be returned. If

containers need to be returned, they should

be clearly labeled. Again, because of

restrictions on activity, minimal cleanup is

appreciated.

• Don’t be too generous! Please keep portion

sizes to two (Monsignor and our summer

seminarian), not family-sized. (Although a

bit extra that could be used again as a lunch

is certainly appreciated!)

• Not all meals need to be "made from

scratch”—local takeout meals, fresh

prepped items from grocery stores, pre-

made deli meals for reheating—all are

great!

• Small desserts are a nice touch, but also not

required. Seasonal local fruits would be

great!

Find details and online sign-up at bit.ly/

StEAS_Meal_Volunteers. Feel free to call

Donna with any questions, 717-697-6929.
