PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I am pleased to send the President’s Message for
the full day seminar on “Advances in Concrete
and Steel Structures” scheduled to be held on 29th
October 2019, at the Oak Room, Cinnamon Grand
Hotel, Colombo. This is the third and the final
seminar for the year 2019, organized by the
Society of Structural Engineers Sri Lanka.
The topics and the resource persons in the seminar
have been selected very carefully to cover a wide
spectrum of local and foreign experiences in both
research and applications in the construction
industry. As such the participants will be
benefited immensely in resolving their issues
related to durability of concrete structures, from
the first presentation which will be conducted by
Prof Anura Nanayakkara.
Our own experience on the designing and
construction of a large water supply project, will
be shared by Eng N A S Shantha, Eng. R S K
Thrimavitharana and Eng. Nageeja Ariyasena.
Although the steel building design and
construction is popular, the behavior of the
buildings under seismic loading and detailing to
mitigate seismic effect is not much applied in the
Sri Lankan context. Prof. Durgesh Rai will touch
this area.
Eng. Inbarajan Rajavel, a very popular resource
person in Singapore and Malaysia, wishes to share
his vast knowledge in the Structural Robustness
and Security in building design.
The BS 5950, the widely design code used in
designing of steel buildings for the last couple of
decades are now outdated and the Eurocodes are
becoming popular in Sri Lanka. The presentation
by Dr (Mrs) Premini Hettiarchchi having her
experience in teaching and research works, will
definitely add more values to the seminar.
The seminar organizing Committee comprising
Eng. Lionel Gunawickrama (Chairman), Eng.
Aravinda Kalugaldeniya and Eng. Y Goguladas
have made our effort of having a more useful
event, a success. The Executive Committee
Members and the Associate Member Chapter
Committee are also behind the success. Dr. Nihal
Somarathne and Eng. K L S Sahabandu, past
President of SSESL shall chair the morning and
afternoon sessions to ensure the time is best
managed and the audience is given the
opportunity to discuss issues effectively.
The Platinum sponsors Insee Cement and Melwa
Rolling (Pvt) Ltd have relieved the Society from
the financial burdens and made participants more
comfortable in the registration. I humbly request
all the participants to make use of this opportunity
to strengthen the knowledge, henceforth making
our vision completed.
