Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
We find ourselves wrapping up another successful and enjoyable season of service at Swanny Surf Club. I hope that this Annual Report captures a snapshot of the activities and achievements that occurred in Season 2020/2021. This President's Report, picks up directly where my previous year's Report left off. With a number of overarching projects such as the Club's Building Extension, challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic with its related postponements and delays, this season has very much been a continuation of the last. I signed off my last Annual Report with a question, will we be SLSWA Club of the Year? I'm sorry to say we were unsuccessful, not that we didn't deserve it, just that our growing Club is still on its way to being recognised. I can however, say that we were let down easily by the awarding of our very own Graham Sharpe with the SLSWA Assessor of the Year and the SLSA Assessor of the Year - a truly outstanding achievement that the Club was able to celebrate with Graham over the season.
*UPDATE* Scraping into the deadline for this Annual Report (thanks Mark Grzanka for the tolerance and all of the excellent work you do pulling these together!), on Thursday 13th May we found out that we have five finalists in this year’s SLSWA Awards of Excellence.
• Graham Sharpe - Assessor of the Year
• Lavan Club of the Year
• Peran Bishop - Trainer of the Year
• Luke Bishop - Volunteer of the Year
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
• Paul Lippiatt - Woodside Nippers Program Volunteer of the Year.
Such an incredible list of finalists! Of the 32 Clubs on the coast Swanny is extremely well represented in finalists for our size. Huge thanks to Tim Tucak and Erin Gallagher for preparing the award nominations during the busiest time of the Club Season (for the Management Committee at least!). This theme of continuation over seasons extends to the Club’s Management Committee, which I was thrilled to see largely unchanged. The Club’s Management Committee, now more than in any of my previous 10 seasons, are executing much of the work required to run their portfolios. This is on top of managing the strategic direction and decision making of the Club. Our current Club structure has 69 positions of office, with many fantastic officers operating across the portfolios, but with a fast-growing club (+40% over the last two seasons) we always need more help from our membership base. The Management Committee is cognisant of our growing membership and the potentially unsustainable model currently being operated. We are in the early stages of discussing options to alleviate some of this pressure, including investigating the employment of more specialist help, the potential restructure of our Management Committee to a directorship, increased engagement and mentoring programs, or creating a natural vacuum. The solution is likely a combination of these, with an outlook to spread the load and lift engagement across the whole membership base.
I mentioned that I was thrilled to retain the Management Committee largely unchanged - this cannot be overstated. The Management Committee at Swanny is first class and the leadership and hard work exhibited by this group is evidenced in the continued success of our Club, social engagement, growing membership, record Bronze intakes, new surf sports opportunities and achievements, successful patrols and leadership, engaged Woodside Nippers and developing Cadet programs. All of these achievements will no doubt be documented in the following pages of this report. I need to recognise Dave Parsons (Education) and Annie Williams (Surf Sports) who are not re-nominating for their management positions next season. Their contributions to the Club on the Management Committee have been significant and hugely appreciated. Furthermore Lucy Gunzburg, our Deputy President, is also stepping down from the Management Committee. Lucy is a massive asset to the Club, her contribution and leadership in this role has been immense, as are her general contributions as a role model around the Club. This has been Lucy's eighth season on the Management Committee, which puts her in esteemed company. The ever-present threat of COVID-19 has kept the Club and Members on their toes and created more administration work than we would have liked. The Club’s COVID-19 Advisory Sub-Committee have kept up their great work ensuring the Club makes informed decisions on our operations. COVID-19 also saw the 2020 Annual Dinner rescheduled to October 2020 (acting as a great season
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
opener) and cancelled our largest fundraising event, the Swanny Ocean Classic. I look forward to the day when snap lockdowns and COVID no longer threaten out volunteer and fundraising activities. A significant amount of my energy this season was sunk into two items - The Club Lease & Annual Grant and the Club's Building Development.
In late 2020 I began working on several issues in the Club's lease with an all-star team of Mark Grzanka and Tim Tucak. These issues were:
1. The Club does not have a lease agreement, or any agreement covering the Patrol Tower building.
2. The Club's Annual Grant, provided by the City of Nedlands, was due to expire in March 2021.
3. The Club needed to re-negotiate a review of our annual grant, based on the aforementioned error.
The Club is still working with the City of Nedlands and State Government to secure a lease on the Patrol Tower, this is an ongoing issue that is tied into the South West Settlement Agreements. I am hopeful it will be resolved in the 2021 calendar year.
The Club relies on an annual grant to help support lifesaving services to the City. The Club's Annual Grant lease clause was never supposed to read 'expire', but rather 'review'. The City conceded early in our discussions that the Club's lease should refer to the SNSLSC annual grant as being “reviewed” on 1 March 2021 as opposed to “expiring” on 1 March 2021. This was a historic error on the City's part where a council resolution was not actioned in the final document. The Club had executed the erroneous lease without either party's knowledge of the error until recently. The Annual Grant review was initially in question, but after presenting our case, we were able to work with City of Nedlands Administration and the Elected Members to review our lease in the Club and the community’s favour. This ensures funding is provided to the Club in recognition of our Lifesaving Service every year until our lease expires in 2034, to the value of approximately $800k over the next 12 years. Lawyers have drawn up the amendments which have been reviewed by the Club to our satisfaction. I anticipate executing the Deed of Variation before this report is issued at the Club’s 2021 AGM.

When I took on the role of President at Swanny, the main goal I had for my time in this position was to deliver the elusive changeroom, gym and storage redevelopment in a timely fashion, finished to a high standard and leaving the Club in a fiscally stable position. For nine of the twelve months of this Swanny season this goal seemed distant, with roadblocks at every turn, expending excessive effort with little progress to show. We started the season with Lotterywest having cancelled our grant application and redirected all funding to COVID related projects and being unsuccessful in CSRFF's extremely competitive grant application. In these grant funding applications we tried to keep the project as lean as possible. With the need for more toilet facilities and storage space being so urgent, a lean project and budget was thought the best way to get funds quickly and start building to resolve these issues. Based on the failed grant applications, it became apparent that being lean was not working to our advantage. Was our project too small and flying under the radar? Perhaps grant providers wanted something that was finished to a higher level, something that was otherwise fully funded and shovel ready. So we went big! A more comprehensive costing was produced, accounting for the stretched state of the building industry, to the tune of $2.1M. We also prepared a development application to improve our position and were granted approval. We became the squeakiest wheel, making endless noise with the assistance of our Patrons and SLSWA. Initially, this did not work. Lotterywest provided feedback that our project EOI wasn't strongly enough linked to the new COVID-19 criteria. The State CSRFF program however, “awarded” us $460K in grant funding if we could secure matching funding within four weeks over the 2020 Christmas break. When the outgoing Minister for Sport and Recreation refused to budge on this seemingly impossible CSRFF arrangement a media scrum ensued, with multiple articles in the Post, Western Suburbs Weekly, Perth Now and 6PR interviews - drawing in comment from our ever-supportive Vice Patron and Federal Member, Celia Hammond, who had been implicated by the Minister. As you might imagine, we were unsuccessful in securing $460k in matching funding over Christmas. Nonetheless, we continued to work with Lotterywest and the Federal Government. Renewed with the attention from the second failed CSRFF grant attempt, and working closely with Celia Hammond and her team, we were able to secure $610k in grant funding from the non-competitive Federal Community Development Grants Programme in March 2021. On the same evening that I found out about the Federal Funding, after a few weeks of sending emails, Facebook messages and making calls during the WA State election campaigns, we were given an Election Commitment from the McGowan Government for $500K. This commitment was secure regardless of the outcome in our seat (Cottesloe) and only contingent on the McGowan Governments re-election. This re-election came to be a week later, seeing the project go from $0 in funding to over $1M in a little over a week. Lotterywest came to the party not long after. 18 months of working with the Lotterywest grant team through multiple EOI's and applications resulted in a sum of $500K being awarded to the Club after the April 2021 board meeting. This was not the full amount requested but is certainly enough to contribute to ensuring the development can go ahead. As of writing this, the Club has secured more than $1.6M in grant funding for the project. The final funding partner and building owner, the City of Nedlands, is currently deliberating their draft budget which contains the remaining project funding. Based on my last 24 months of collaboration with the City and Elected Members, I am confident that the sum will make it into the final budget.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
In addition to the budget, we have started working with the City of Nedlands and their City Projects and Programs team to ensure the Club’s redevelopment project is delivered to the City's satisfaction and that all tender processes, stakeholder management and funding acquittals are completed as required. Having such expertise on our team is a welcome relief and yet another reinforcement of the Club's growing relationship with the City of Nedlands. I have had significant support for the redevelopment project over the last 12 months from the whole Executive Committee. Mark is always flexible to meet with stakeholders, run reports and deliver information. Many newspaper photo shoots and meetings have been attended at last minute by Lucy, and Kate is very involved in ensuring the delivery of a good outcome for our Members. Justin Owens has given his fair share of strategic advice, letter reviewing and meeting attendances. Emma Dunning, the Club's volunteer Town Planner, produced the successful Development Application. Finally, Daniel Juengling deserves an incredible amount of appreciation for the tens of thousands of dollars worth of architect and project management services he has provided pro bono to the Club. Without Dan the development would not be where it is. His ongoing (and currently daily) commitment to the delivery of this project over so many years (with a couple more to come) is testament to his commitment to Swanny. At the time of writing this, I am confident that the Club's building redevelopment will go ahead, likely breaking ground in March 2022. The estimated ten-month program will be completed largely over the winter months, with minimal disruption to the Club’s function and stakeholders, and will be completed in time for the Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club’s 90th Season. This has truly been another excellent season at Swanny Surf Club. The various portfolio reports show just how much we as volunteers have achieved (and are far less dry than this report!). It has been a pleasure to serve as the Club's President for another season, and to share in all of the achievements and successes of our Members. As always, see you on the beach.

As the season comes to a close, I reflect back not just on the past year as Deputy President, but on the last several years of being part of the Management Committee. Although at times the workload has been high and the meetings have been long, being involved in the Club at a management level has been extremely rewarding and insightful.
Swanbourne Cup competitors with winners Matilda Banfield and Clancy Banfield (second year in a row!)
I joined the Management Committee for the first time in 2008/2009, as Competition Manager, with a level of trepidation. Despite having been at the Club for a few seasons, I was unsure as to whether I knew enough about surf lifesaving and the ins and outs of what makes Swanny tick to serve the Club in this way. However, Tim Tucak, who was President at the time, convinced me that this was no barrier to jumping on board and giving it my best shot. I soon realised that the answer to what truly makes Swanny is quite simple – it is the people. It has been amazing to work closely with so many Swanny greats and to witness their dedication and passion for our mighty Club. For those who can afford the time, I encourage you in the coming years to put your hand up for committee and officer roles.
Every portfolio manager on the committee this season has been so hard working and committed, but I would particularly like to mention the three other members who have made up the Club’s Executive Committee. The time and effort that Kate Hutchinson and Mark Grzanka have put in behind the scenes once again to make our Club what we are, has been simply epic. They are both so professional and do everything without need or want of recognition. And again, it goes without saying, that Luke Bishop has continued to be utterly incredible in his role as President. The volunteer hours that Luke has given to the Club over the last two years is simply mindboggling. Thank you, Luke, for your tireless commitment to the Club. It’s going to be so exciting to see the building project get underway in the near future!
I would also like to thank the managers of the three portfolios that fall under Deputy President. Anne-Marie Williams, as Surf Sports Manager, has continued to display an immeasurable passion for all things Surf Sports and Swanny. She still manages to come up with new intra-club competitions that are always a highlight for members.

This season the Ocean M Mixed Team event was a new edition to the Swanny calendar. The original idea for this competition was to use it to finalise that age old Swanny debate of which Swanny “Mega-Family” reigns supreme. To settle this once and for all, each family had to fill the four legs of their relay team (run, swim, board, ski) with the best family combo possible and fight it out until the end. The event was also, of course, open to the entire Club to enter any team they wanted with whoever they liked (we are all one big family anyway, right?!). Sadly, due to a few big outs, the Swanny Mega-Family debate could not be settled, but the Ocean M Mixed Team event was still a huge success and I’m sure the trash talk will continue next season and we’ll see the line-up happen at some stage.
Erin Gallagher, in the role of Junior Development Manager, has continued to take our Nipper Program from strength to strength. I have always been in awe of what Erin has achieved at our Club, as our first female Club President, as well as gaining Life Membership at such a young age. It has been wonderful to work alongside her and see her in action. Sunday mornings were looking as busy as ever this season with the Nipper, Junior and Cadet members taking to the beach. I enjoyed working closely with Kristie Orchard and Simone Janney as they ran another excellent program for our junior and cadet members. Thank you also to Raymond Lampard who assisted with running Surf Sport sessions with our teenage members on Sunday mornings.

Dave Parsons, ever the people’s person, has continued to coordinate a cohesive and productive education team in his role of Education Manager. The range of courses offered at Swanny and the number of different trainers and assessors that are required to make this happen means this role is a lot about management of people and logistics. Dave is highly respected by his fellow members, making him the perfect person for this role.
So - thank you so much Annie, Erin and Dave! Your organisation and commitment have really meant you haven’t needed much from me at all!

Next season, I’m choosing to take a break from nominating for a management position at the Club. It’s been a wonderful experience contributing to the Management Committee over the last several years. Thanks to all those who have supported and guided me during this time. I look forward to seeing many of you training in the off season preparing for total Aussies domination on the beach in Scarborough in 2022!!
Lucy Gunzburg - Deputy President
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
It’s been another busy, educational, fun and rewarding year to be part of such great Management and Executive Committees. COVID again threw us challenges, but in incredible Swanny spirit it was fantastic to see the Club and its Members still shine! Open Day scored a glorious sunny day to showcase the Club. There were bubbles, a bouncy castle, BBQ, beers, free ice cream and even a new Swanny lifesaver friend that came to say hi! It was great to see the Club abuzz with both our members and the community. It was also a fabulous display of a combined club effort, with all portfolios pulling together and many members pitching in to help make it a success - huge thank you to all those involved. With an interstate trip this year conflicting with Country Carnival, a call out was made for a Country Carnival Officer to take the reins. Over a beverage on the Swanny deck, Kathleen Laws enthusiastically (ok, maybe apprehensively?) agreed to take on the role. From there the Swanny Minions Country Carnival 2021 campaign was born! … And assemble the minions she did, with 78 Swanny minions converging on Bunbury for the Country Carnival weekend. This year’s competition and shenanigans delivered the goods and the memories to go with it. Who were the six or so minions who somehow managed to check into the entirely wrong hostel? It is no easy task to wrangle and organise our Swanny members who are notorious for their faff, made all the more difficult with the Briggs all getting lost and losing all their possessions, but by all accounts, Kath pulled off an epic and incredible weekend. Thanks so much Kath! A BIG thank you to Justin Owens (Marketing Manager), Logan Ovenden-Clarke (Lifesaving Manager) and Brodie Price (Social Manager) for running each of their portfolios so brilliantly across the season. It was wonderful to see Justin and Logan build on their previous season and watch their portfolios thrive; and it was fantastic to have Brodie’s fresh injection of enthusiasm as he took on the beast that is Social. All three of these portfolios faced significant challenges and last-minute curveballs due to the snap COVID lock down at the start of February. With Ocean Classic cancelled, restrictions on patrols and Blue Party postponed, there was a huge amount of work behind the scenes to coordinate all the logistics and communications, to ensure all factors were considered and the public and our members informed and looked after. It was an incredible effort all round.

Highlights for me this season included:
▪ Seeing Luke Bishop’s huge efforts and dedication rewarded by finally receiving funding commitments for the building project.
▪ Doing my first ever Christmas Day patrol along with 37 other Swanny members in a festive array of Santa hats and Xmas rashies!
▪ Seeing Swanny host the State Lifesaving Championships and our competitors in action.
After three seasons as Club Captain, it’s time to pass the spray cans over to the next Swanny legend! Thank you to everyone who has supported me in the role and for all the good times.

Well, it has been another fantastic season on patrol at Swanny, with our usual mix of shark alarms, stingers coming out with another mutant strain and the infamous shore dump claiming its annual tribute of shoulders and dignity. We had one suspected spinal injury involving one of our Nippers that was dealt with extremely professionally by Franetovich Patrol and friends. His father later passed on his sincere thanks in this message: Could you please pass on our thanks to the patrol members on Sunday morning. My son was playing in the surf after nippers and was dumped. He hit his head and came out complaining of a sore neck. The patrol was amazing, carrying out first aid and calling an ambulance. Luckily (he) is ok. The doctors at PCH looked after him well and have assessed that he has just strained some muscles. Thanks again. We also had another serious incident occur on the Bronze Medallion course when one of the candidates broke her wrist during IRB awareness training. Once again this was managed by our trainers and patrol members in an extremely professional manner. The Christmas Patrol proved to be even more popular (potentially influenced by the promise of Swanny’s first ever orphan lunch afterwards), with 38 members giving up their Christmas morning to keep an extremely busy beach safe! Between mouthfuls of delicious treats, the patrol was involved in the successful search for a missing four-year-old, who had a very happy but teary reunion with her grateful family after 15 frantic minutes.
Swanny Christmas Day Patrol

It was also fantastic to finish the season on a high with the return of the inter-patrol challenge, held on the last day of patrol, with team members from 11 patrols competing in four short events on the day. The combined might of Claybrook, Cook, and Tim Tucak carried the day! Thanks to the efforts and vigilance of our 274 members on patrol and Nipper water safety, we achieved the following over the season:
▪ Three rescues. ▪ 36 first aid treatments*, including three fractures/dislocations and one suspected spinal
injury. ▪ 229 preventative actions*. ▪ 4,250 total patrol hours. ▪ 13,579 recorded beach attendance*
*Statistics recorded are likely to be far lower than actual due to data lost using the SLSA Patrol Operations app
Sunday morning at Swanny Beach
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
▪ We introduced a Junior Patrol Captain mentorship
pathway, with three under 18 members (Jack Rigby,
Jordi Broomhall and Rosie Defrancesco) taking the
reins of their respective patrols under the guidance of
three experienced Patrol Captains (Leesa Equid, Jon
Broomhall and Jo Rooke).
▪ We managed to get Assistant Vice Captains on half
our patrols, increasing the pool of members able to
cover PC/VC patrol swaps and further developing
pathways for future Club leaders.
▪ Publishing the SNSLSC Patrol Operations Guide, to
help standardise the way patrols are run, provide an
easy reference guide for patrol set up/pack down and
likely scenarios to be encountered on patrol. A big
thank you to everyone who provided feedback on it’s
development: Leesa Equid, Graham Sharpe, Jon
Garnett, Jon Broomhall, Emma Chaffey, Emma
Dunning and all the Committee members.
▪ James Anderson (Ando) repurposed the patrol ATV to
provide Swanny’s first mobile barista service, that was
clearly welcomed by all on patrol!
▪ In its third year, the SLSA Patrol Operations app continues to experience teething issues,
resulting in a large number of lost statistics such as beach attendance and preventive
actions.
▪ There was also a significant increase in the number of no shows on patrol, with the average
patrol having six members not turning up to at least one patrol during the season without
prior notice! How much of this is related to COVID-19 or the patrol operations app crashes is
hard to determine.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
This is always a tough one to pick, using raw statistics would be the easiest way, but whoever said statistics don’t lie obviously has never used Surfguard! Along with statistics such as average and median patrol hours, the number of no shows, percentage of members who completed their minimum rostered hours, we also consider the quality of patrolling by looking at patrol logs, set up, pack down and activities conducted on patrol. This season there were two clear front runners, and I would like to acknowledge the runner up to Patrol of the Year in a very tight race, McCosker Patrol. Well done for another fantastic patrolling season! Congratulations however to Taylor Patrol, the City of Nedlands Patrol of the Year for 2020/2021. Their achievements included:
▪ Averaged 12.9 rostered hours against a Club average of 11.3 rostered hours (i.e. each member only missed or swapped one of their assigned season patrols).
▪ Completed a median of 21.1 patrol hours against a Club median of 18.2 patrol hours and averaged over 19.2 hours (against a Club average 18.3).
▪ 12 of 14 members completed their minimum assigned hours (and one other member was only 15 minutes short).
On patrol Taylor were always active and always completed their paperwork to a high standard (making my life much easier!). They say a team is only as good as their leader, and this team had a new Patrol Captain, Jordi Broomhall, who really stepped up and grew throughout the season with the support of some of our most experienced members. Well done again to The City of Nedlands Patrol of the Year 2020/21 - Taylor Patrol.

Right to left: City of Nedlands Coastal Ward Councillor Kerry Smyth with Taylor Patrol members Jordi Broomhall (PC), Sophie Bastow (VC), Sam Parker, Julie Fatovich and Jon Broomhall (mentor PC)
Again, every year you could pick half a dozen members, and this year was no exception with honourable mentions to Kate Hutchinson and Jordi Broomhall. Kate could have won Patrol Member of the Year on multiple occasions, she is consistently amongst the top members for patrol hours each season, including having the fourth highest patrol hours this season, at close to 40 hours. Kate is always the first to stick her hand up to cover anyone’s patrol, covering five additional patrols on top of her rostered patrols this season, and is always a welcome asset on any patrol either as a member or Patrol Captain.
Jordi led Taylor Patrol to the City of Nedlands Patrol of the Year in her first season as a Patrol Captain. She has taken to the role of PC like a Broomhall in water, embracing the responsibility of being a PC and growing in confidence throughout the season. Watching Jordi communicate with her patrol you would be surprised to learn she is still a couple of months shy of her 18th birthday! Jordi always ensures that patrol paperwork is completed to an exemplary standard and communicates with the lifesaving leadership team in an extremely profession manner. This season Jordi completed her Silver Medallion and WA training officer’s courses as well as holding her SRC, Bronze Medallion and IRB Crew Certificate.
Now to Patrol Member of the Year, Jack Rigby.
With Andy leaving earlier in the season, many of us got a little worried that patrols might be thin on the ground, but Jack quickly calmed those fears by completing an incredible 117 patrol hours this season! It is important to state that Patrol Member of the Year is not just about the number of hours completed, anyone can sit in the tower drinking coffee all summer, it is about the quality of those hours and the contribution made on patrols. This season Jack has really stepped up in this area.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
Along with patrolling at Swanny, Jack helped out with the abalone patrol just north of Trigg Beach, during what was unfortunately the most severe conditions of the Abalone season in which 24 rescues occurred in the surrounding bays.
Extremely stretched resources saw Jack patrolling an entire bay on his own with no means of communication to other lifesavers other than by using a rescue tube for signals so they could be seen. He was overseeing hundreds of inexperienced swimmers venturing into extremely rough, rocky conditions. While Jack was fortunate not to have any incidents in his location, he accepted the possibility and responsibility with confidence well beyond his years.
Jack has also taken on the Junior Patrol Captains role and embraced it. Whilst Jack sometimes needing to be reminded that a Patrol Captain’s job is to delegate, this just shows his level of enthusiasm for all things surf.
Along with his 117 patrol hours, Jack has put in countless hours with the training team, making great strides towards gaining his Bronze Medallion Training Officer’s award by helping at nearly every session on both Bronze courses. He may actually hold the record for the greatest number of hours put into Swanny this season, for anyone who is not a Bishop.
With regards to awards, if he is old enough to hold it Jack has the award, and after 17 frustrating years, he has finally started his IRB Drivers course at the time of writing this report!
City of Nedlands Coastal Ward Councillor Kerry Smyth with Lifesaver of the Year Jack Rigby
Once again, the Lifesaving portfolio officers have done a fantastic job and patrols could not run without you! So, a huge thank you to everyone in the team for all your efforts over the season:

▪ SwimRun Rottnest Officer – Sarah Weinman/Shari Freeman
The extremely serious and competitive events created to determine the real Swanny champion patrol comprised of the following:
▪ Strip/Dress Relay – A beach relay where each competitor must remove their patrol shirt and shorts, run to the rescue tube and back, get dressed and then tag the next competitor. Six competitors per team.
▪ Spinal Board Drag – A shuttle relay where four competitors drag another competitor on a spinal board along the beach relay track, swapping to the next competitor at each end of the track. Six competitors per team must be dragged.
▪ Board Rescue Relay – In pairs, one competitor swims out to an imaginary turning point and signals, their team member paddles out a rescue board, rescues the swimmer and returns to shore to tag the next competitor. Three pairs of competitors per team.
▪ Human Tunnel Ball – With each team in a line, the rear competitor crawls through the legs of the team to the front of the line. This continues until the first team reaches the flag.

The Marketing team had another fantastic 2020/2021 season.
Whilst not always front and centre, Marketing is a significant portfolio in the Swanny universe. Our elite and diverse Marketing team has had a busy season keeping you in the loop on all things Swanny, ensured you are dressed in some of the finest apparel on the coast and through our grant applications, sponsorship and fundraising continued to support the club financially.
Wild celebrations at Country Carnival when our very own Sam Barnett took the win in the women’s beach flags Just when we were all getting comfortable and consigning COVID-19 interruptions to 2019/2020, it popped up again for a week at the end of January to smash our watermelon inspired Ocean Classic dreams. Despite unfortunately having to cancel the event 36 hours before its start, we must give a massive shout out to Nick Hudson and the team (Alex Aberle-Leeming, Susan O’Connell, Ray Lampard, Justin Owens) who again contributed hundreds of hours in organising what was shaping to be a record year for the Ocean Classic.
Nick’s willingness to continue with event preparations in the face of increasingly unlikely odds and onerous restrictions is a testament to the professional way the race is run. Despite the cancellation and due to the generosity of many of the participants (including many Swanny legends) who donated their event entry fee, the event was still the most significant fundraiser for Swanny, raising approximately $20,000. We look forward to the Ocean Classic returning bigger and better next year.
In some form of irony COVID-19 did allow us to apply for and be successful for a number of grants during the season, including the successful application for a $17,000 COVID-19 recovery grant. A big thank you to Lucy Kitching for taking on the tireless Grants Officer role.
The Street Appeal was back in force this season and once again raised important funds for the club. Whilst not the money spinner it once was (coins – remember those?), it provided what is one of my highlights of the year, which was the opportunity to shake our tins at the new WA Museum and to get a lot of the old Swanny members together to see our old surfboat, the
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
Cygnet V suspended from the ceiling of the museum. It was great to see a significant part of Swanny history become part of WA’s history and for the old members to reunite. Thanks to Cherie McLachlan for arranging access to the museum.
As clearly the best-looking club on the coast, we must throw a huge thanks to Lauren Brayford and Naomi Kohan for keeping us all in the finest threads. Lauren and Naomi were everywhere making sure merchandise was available to all, from Open Days to pool sessions to Woodside Nippers and Bronze events. It is no wonder we kept having to place orders for more stock. Through their efforts we now also have a significantly improved ordering and stocktake process. The introduction of the new trucker hats was a particular highlight, although I keep donating them to the Indian Ocean.
I would like to thank the Bishop boys, Luke and Peran, who continue to ensure our brand and image is always on point and continue to change my font choice back to the official (and obscure) Club one.
Keeping you informed of all things Swanny and keeping us all to our submission deadlines was Lucy Helliwell, who managed to have a baby and still publish The Shorebreak on time and to a high quality each month. With so much happening at Swanny, keeping The Shorebreak down to an appropriate size was an unenviable task. On top of all this Lucy saved us in our hour of need and agreed to take on the social media role (ably assisted by Kate Hutchinson) to keep our members and non-members engaged and up to date.
In proof that IT is a young person’s game, our website officer age more than halved as Jack Rigby took on the website officer role from Julian Gibbings this season. Thanks Jack for updating the website and showing me how to unlock an email password! Julian deserves a special shout out for not only recreating our website back in 2016 but for also maintaining it for the last five years.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
The Swanny boatshed repping signage for our major sponsor Class 1 Orthodontics I would also like to thank our major Club sponsors; The City of Nedlands, Class 1 Orthodontics and The Shorehouse for their significant contribution to the Club this season. I am sure many of you noticed the Class1 Orthodontics sign on the garage door as you ordered your discounted coffee from NCFY. A big shout out also to Bespoke Finance for their continued support of the Swanny Ocean Classic, support for which we are now able to extend for one further year. Thanks also to Natalie Woolfitt for taking on the Sponsorship Officer role. Please continue to support our sponsors wherever possible. Thank you to all members of the Marketing team for a successful season. Justin Owens – Marketing Manager
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
Like all seasons, 2020/2021 in the Education portfolio was a big one. Let’s get into it.
The Bronze course training team were kept busy from the get-go this year and did a marvellous job as always. These courses are such an essential part of our Club and serve as a vital pipeline to maintaining our lifesaving capacity and service to the community. Given the late cancellation of our second bronze course last season due to COVID, the Bronze training started earlier this year, as refresher sessions and an assessment were organised to induct these members into our lifesaving patrols. Almost immediately after last year’s group was finalised, the next crop of Swanny hopefuls were signed up and began to learn to navigate the Swanny shore dump and develop their lifesaving skills. This course was closely followed by our second Bronze course starting in early February, following a short hiatus for the festive season and school holidays. All up there were 80 new Bronze Medallion awards obtained this season- a massive achievement!
Swanny’s successful Bronze Medallion participants I cannot report on the Bronze Medallion courses and not acknowledge Peran Bishop. Peran’s energy and passion for the Bronze course is just flat out incredible. Peran is there before everyone, is well organised, and devotes many of his days off tending to the mountains of administration work that go into running these courses. There is no doubt that Peran and his endeavours have heavily influenced the burgeoning numbers and fantastic experience of our newest members. Thanks mate. Kristie Orchard and her fantastic team were again on the beach training our up-and-coming younger members, putting them through their paces as they obtained their Surf Rescue Certificates. Many thanks to Kristie and her team for running the SRC, with 14 new lifesavers having obtained their SRC award during the season. With the SRC and Bronze courses combined for season 2020/2021, almost 100 new lifesavers were inducted into the Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club. For all of those who undertook
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
these courses, I offer you my sincerest congratulations and look forward to seeing you at the beach on patrol in your red and yellows!
Higher Awards were busy again this season with a number of courses being run, including multiple Advanced Resuscitation courses (ART-AID), two IRB Crew courses, a Silver Medallion (Beach Management) Course and the coveted Gold Medallion. Currently we are running an IRB Drivers course over the winter months, which should build our Powercraft capability.
The Education team, led by the Proficiency Officer Leesa Equid completed proficiency for over 189 Bronze and 15 SRC award holders. This season we trialled a new model for proficiency. While labour intensive, the new model undoubtedly resulted in a fantastic training experience to maintain our high standard of lifesaving skills within the Club. These courses and proficiencies don’t happen by themselves, with so many people involved giving up countless hours to make them happen. To all the trainers, assessors, facilitators and happy helpers (over 30 members) who help make our Bronze, SRC, NRC and Higher Awards courses the best on the coast, I give you my sincerest thanks.
Over the offseason during the dark winter COVID months, one of our very own Education team, Graham Sharpe, took out the national gong for SLSA Assessor of the Year and we couldn't be more proud. Graham is a high-performing individual as an Assessor. Graham’s excellence in assessing is demonstrated by consistently acting as an Assessor in Charge at assessments across the entire Surf Life Saving suite of courses including: 1. Powercraft; 2. Emergency care; and 3. Aquatic Courses (Bronze, Silver and Gold Medallion). In this role, he exhibits all the qualities of an exceptional educator and assessor.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
Graham is well prepared (almost too prepared), thorough, possesses high-level communication skills (both amongst the assessing team and the candidates), leverages all available teaching moments by using assessment as both a summative and formative process, and commits to constant quality improvement in processes and the people he interacts with at all stages throughout the assessment process (pre, during and post assessment). Moreover, Graham is always the first person to stick his hand up when the bat signal goes up and there is a need to organise an assessor in a short time period. Graham looks to the future. He recognises that leadership involves the development of people. Graham continues to mentor trainers, less experienced assessors and facilitators across almost all training courses available within Surf Life Saving. Graham is able to create a learning environment that demands excellence but at the same time, is supportive and developmental by intent, design and execution. This is a rare skill and is, in my opinion, one of the greatest one can possess as a leader and educator. Congratulations to Sharpie.
The winner of the outstanding contribution to education for this season was Leesa Equid. Leesa took on one of the most thankless jobs in the Education portfolio, proficiency. While proficiency is absolutely fundamental in maintaining our lifesaving capacity, organising an already stretched training team and herding 190 people to sign up and complete their Bronze proficiencies (with the associated online content) is tough work. As the manager of the Education portfolio, I’m usually inundated with requests for alternate Bronze proficiencies dates as the December 31st deadline looms as people have “forgot” or “been away for work”. This year, I received hardly any. Whether that was due to COVID or the slick organisation with multiple opportunities to complete the training, I will never know. However, proficiencies were completed with little fanfare and based on all feedback, to exceptional quality. Not only did Leesa organise the sessions, but she could be found most weekends, running them and then tacking on a lazy ART-AID proficiency at the end for those who were unable to avoid her eye contact and escape quick enough.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
If this wasn’t enough, Leesa took on the role of Higher Awards Officer and managed to organise a number of very successful courses. Leesa is tireless, professional, highly competent and just loves surf lifesaving. Congratulations Leesa!
In my final year in the Education Manager role, I would like to thank the existing Management Committee for their support and camaraderie over the past two years. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with such great people and will miss the time spent together at committee meetings and other committee events. Thanks legends!

Our junior contingent continues to go from strength to strength, completing an awesome season filled with Sunday morning activities, surf sports, education, water safety and social events. Firstly, a huge heartfelt thank you to everyone who made Season 2020/2021 so successful for our Youth members and Woodside Nippers. To all the parents, carers and club members who gave their time to keep our young members safe, to instruct essential lifesaving skills, to motivate and coach our competitors and generally just help out whenever needed – thank you. Our junior membership numbers were solid across all age groups: • Nippers (5 – 13 years) – 203, up 14% • Cadets (13 - 14 years) – 32, up 23% • Youth (15 -18 years) – 20, no change
Season 2020/2021 saw another hugely successful Woodside Nippers program delivered every Sunday from November to March, with over two hundred Nippers and their families filling Swanny beach. We continued to benefit from the generous sponsorship of Woodside, with every Nipper once again receiving their own hi-vis vest, Nipper cap, wide brim hat and beach bag. We were also fortunate to again receive additional Nipper soft and hard boards thanks to LotteryWest. This additional equipment greatly assists in ensuring that all our Nippers have ample opportunity to learn and develop essential board paddling and rescue skills every Sunday. We are incredibly lucky to have a dedicated group of Age Group Managers overseeing the instruction and development of surf skills for our members aged 5 to 13 years. A huge thanks to;
• Under 6 – Ben Snedeker, Adele Leahy • Under 7 – Jeff Cohen, Christo Rowley • Under 8 – Gary Couanis • Under 9 – Francene Leaversuch, Nick Bower, Christian Chandler • Under 10 – Davina Goldthorpe, Peter Lorbeer • Under 11 – Joe Keith, Gail Fielding • Under 12 – Tom Orchard, Calum Griffiths • Under 13 – Dave Gallagher, Paul Lippiatt
A special mention to Dave and Paul who are retiring as Age Group Managers after many years of leading their group through the program. Under the vigilant guidance of Water Safety Officer Susie DeFrancesco, our water safety team ensured all Nippers were safe and happy during Sunday morning activities. Susie was ably assisted by Water Safety Supervisors Tim Tucak and Jen White, along with a dedicated group of parents decked out in orange rashies, many of whom completed far more than their rostered Nipper ‘Cygnet’ water safety patrols. Thanks to COVID, our Nipper Club Champs were rescheduled, with the busy surf calendar meaning our Nippers competed across two weekends. This format proved successful (and less stressful!) so will likely continue for next season. All our Nippers should be so proud – everyone gave it their all
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
and showed great sportsmanship across both mornings of competitions. Congratulations to our age group champions – see the list in the Surf Sports section.
Swanny Nippers in action
The NRC is an essential award for any parent assisting with Nipper water safety. This season we had 24 parents requalify their existing award as well as 19 new qualifications gained. This award gives parents and carers of our Nipper members the opportunity to improve their own surf confidence and skills while qualifying them to join our Nipper water safety patrols. Thank you to all parents and carers who completed this award, contributing to a safer environment for our Nippers.
Swanny sent a team of five Under 8s to the SLSWA Little Nipper State Championships at Sorrento Beach in early March. Benji Couanis, Lachlan Anderson, Miles Hayat, Eve Parsons and Charlotte Le all competed strongly across all disciplines of sprints, flags, swim and board. A huge congratulations to our medallists – Benji, bronze medal in the board race and Charlotte, bronze medal in flags. Lachlan also placed a so-close fourth in the sprints. We also had a crew of nine Under 10 to Under 13 Nippers competing at the SLSWA Nipper State Championships at Scarborough Beach. Stirling Stilwell (U13), Neve Stilwell (U12), Josh Engelbrecht (U13) and Hannah Engelbrecht (U11) competed in the surf race, with Josh and Hannah qualifying for the finals and finishing a very impressive 25th and 12th respectively. These athletes were joined by Ollie DeFrancesco (U13), Lydia DeFrancesco (U11), Hazel Griffiths (U11), Hadley Stilwell (U10) and Luke Bye (U10). Well done to Lydia finishing in 12th place. Congratulations to all States competitors!

Our Under 14 to Under 19 Youth members are an enthusiastic and active bunch, immersing themselves in all aspects of surf lifesaving – education, patrols, surf sports, water safety and social events. Swanny produced a bumper batch of 17 new Surf Rescue Certificate holders this year. Well done to all candidates - your hard work is to be commended and we look forward to having you join our life saving ranks. Thank you to everyone who instructed our newest patrolling members, especially Junior Education Officer Kristie Orchard. Congratulations to all our Youth members who gained an award this season – Under 14s training hard for their Surf Rescue Certificate, our Under 17's completing their Bronze Medallion course this

season and many other awards such as Radio Operators, ARTC and IRB Crew. Check out the Education section for a complete list of Youth awards gained. Congratulations to Maggie Pazin who was our very worthy recipient of the Kelly O’Mara Best Junior Clubperson award. Maggie is a great all-rounder and has stepped up this year to become involved in all aspects of lifesaving - as an Age Group Manager assistant and junior patrol vice-captain. Huge thanks to all the parents and senior club members who supported our Youth to achieve their life saving goals this year.
Swanny’s latest SRC participants, Welcome to patrol!
The Youth members also showed their colours at the SLSWA TOAD camp on Rottnest, Lachlan Broomhall, and Maggie Pazin and Hannah Orchard attended the SLSWA RiseUp Camp in Pemberton. All camp attendees also attended a Management Committee meeting to share their experiences. Grateful acknowledgement to Deputy President Lucy Gunzburg who coordinated Sunday morning activities for our Youth members this season and to the Senior club members who so willingly shared their time and surf sports skills by hosting training sessions. Thank you to Youth Officer Jack Rigby, for overseeing this talented group.
Lachlan Broomhall and Stirling Stilwell were nominated for the SLSWA Youth Achiever Award and Nipper Achiever Award respectively. Elliott Kluken was our nomination for the Under 15 Lifesaver of the Year award. These prestigious state-based awards recognise the outstanding club contributions of junior members in the areas of lifesaving, education and sport.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
As finalists, Lachlan and Stirling were recognised for their contribution to Swanny at the 2020 SLSWA Nipper and Youth Awards, held in April. They may not have won their categories, but all three boys should be extremely proud of their achievements this season. Swanny also nominated two deserving members for the SLSWA Awards of Excellence – Paul Lippiatt as Woodside Nippers Program Volunteer of the Year and Rosie Defrancesco for Youth Lifesaver of the Year. Winners will be announced at the SLSWA Awards of Excellence event on 12 June. Thank you again to everyone who contributed to such an amazing Junior Development season at Swanny. See you on the beach in season 2021/2022!
Erin Gallagher – Junior Development Manager
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
Season 2020/2021 saw many of our members recover from the effects of COVID-19 on last year’s season. Some members did more than recover, they excelled! Season highlights include our men’s boat crew, The Headless Oarsmen, being invited to state selection trials, Ray Lampard completing a virtual long course Coolangatta Gold, our Club hosting State Life Saving Championships, huge participation at all of our Club Champs events, and our youth and youngest cygnets competing for the Club (and bringing home some medals!) at their respective State Championships. These are just a few examples of what was yet another excellent season of Surf Sports.
Our Surf Sports program at Swanny runs on the hard work of a small number of devoted volunteers. In particular I must thank those that really went above and beyond this season: Kev White as Surf Boats Officer, Tim Tucak as master of Points Races and trophies/Club Championships, Jason Williams as Skis Officer, Logan Ovenden-Clarke for his unwavering commitment to making members buff with his weekly Surf Fit session, Ray Lampard who always steps up to coach basically anything and help with basically everything, Peter Brigg for coaching, Peran Bishop for making new board beasts, and Lucy Gunzburg and Kristie Orchard for continuing to wrangle our cadets for training.
A massive thank you also to everyone who helped with the trailer and repairs of club craft, teaching beginners, doing first aid or water safety at carnivals. Without these volunteers going above and beyond to keep our members fit and life saver-ready, our Surf Sports program would not exist. Thank you also to everyone at training and competition for continuing Swanny’s reputation for being the friendliest athletes on the coast; sure, we have some excellent athletes but more importantly we have fine sportsmen and women!
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
It is also important to celebrate the achievements of our members who have shown tremendous dedication and trained extremely hard to improve their fitness and surf skills. Swanny had small but mighty teams at many of the carnivals and the first Surf League event. We also had some phenomenal swimmers cross the channel to Rottnest and our ski pirates took on long distance downwinder races.
After most of the State Championship events were cancelled last year, I was so happy to see Swanny representing at every single one this season. A full list of our winners, grinners and State medallists are detailed below. Each and every member that put on the red and white cap and gave it their all to represent the Club should be incredibly proud. Whether you come first, last, or win a ‘certainty’ medal, you are getting out there and getting wet, and becoming a better lifesaver because of it. There is truly no better time than now to be an athlete of the ocean and the beach. I can’t wait to see what next season brings, especially with the Aussies being in Perth. Teamwork makes the dreamwork, go hard and see you on the water next season! Anne-Marie Juengling - Competition Manager

Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
For those of you who knew me already, some may think taking on the social portfolio for Swanny would come as second nature, but actually what I have come to realise is that I am really good at attending parties. Organising them is a whole other level, but one I'm glad I said yes to!
The 2020/2021 season started a little backwards, with our previous season’s Annual Dinner being thrown at the beginning of October. Max Davies and team did a great job wrapping up their social season and it was a great excuse to kick start the season ahead and pull everyone from their winter slumber.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
Just like Perth’s hard attitude to the east coast, our social season was just warming up...Oktoberfest was back to remind us how to eat Bratwurst and drink big steins of lager. As the days got longer and the mornings warmer, the life members put on their annual breakfast for all. It's about the only time you can have your breakfast served to you by a surgeon, the Commissioner of the fire department and Jules. It's also the only time of year Ando gets to use his barista skills. But no season is ever truly started until we dress up fine, drink cocktails and get messy. The President's Cocktail Party saw us board our maiden cruise for “Swan Voyage”. The frozen daiquiris loosened us up for the D-floor and the Dark and Stormys made sure we all danced like we had no short-term memory. Thankfully we burned our life rafts and resisted a mutiny. What happens on the Swanny cruise, stays on the Swanny cruise.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
But this season was like unlike any other, with our borders locked down and Christmas around the corner, Swanny opened its arms for its first ever official Orphan’s Christmas, giving those away from home, a family to celebrate with. A tradition that hopefully stays on the social calendar!
With 2020 in our rear-view mirrors, we welcomed the onslaught that is the Country Carnival/Blue Party combo! Only Covid had different plans...with ticket sales already sold out and one week to go, Perth hit the meltdown button and turned into a nuclear bunker town. The massive Swanny Ocean Classic was cancelled and Blue Party 2.0 had to give us a reason to smile again. Besides, what is more fun than organising a blue party? Organising two in one season!
Thanks to all our amazing volunteers and the champions at Kook Brewing for donating a keg of beer, Swanny made just as much profit as the previous season, with 100 less people!
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
Barely had the spas been drained and the lights pulled down, when MegaCup was announced. Only two weeks after Blue Party, it really showed who was brave enough to take on the true games of Swanny and look to deliver Chris Hazell his 3rd consecutive loss. But all underdogs have their day and team “Papa Hazell Appreciation Society” had theirs.
Alas, the season was almost ending, and just like it started the Annual Dinner saw us all gather again to send it off in style. Kath Laws, as MC, showed us all it pays to be sober with her quick wit and sharp pointed jokes roasting our committee elite. Many awards were handed out and trophies were won and drank from appropriately. The dance floor heaved and cracked under the feet of those enjoying the fire that “DJ Kath the Menace” was spinning.
Like always there is a team of diehard volunteers behind every social event at Swanny. A massive thankyou to the usual suspects Peran Bishop, Ray Lampard, Alex Aberle-Leeming, Mim Williams and Naomi Kohan. Thanks to everyone who put up a banner, a light or cleared a drink at any event, I could not have done this without you. And finally, thank you to anyone who attended one of these
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
cracking events! Without you, there would be no social scene at Swanny to host. As a club known for its large social calendar and raging parties, you make Swanny what it is... the best club on the coast! See you all next season to do it all again! Brodie Price – Social Manager
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
It was another record year for membership, with Swanny growing a further 9% on top of last season’s 30% surge to reach 762 members. What is great is that our growth is not inflated by Social or Gym members or even our Associate - Nipper Parent members. Swanny’s growth has been in our future and current lifesavers, our Nipper, Cadet and Senior membership categories. Kudos to Peran Bishop and the Education team for training 97 new Swanny lifesavers in 2020-2021!
Briggy, was he even trying? Our Nipper Program has been healthy for a while, but it wasn’t that many seasons ago we only had a handful of Youth members, and they were more often than not born into the Swanny cult. Thanks to the hard work of Erin Gallagher, Kristie Orchard and many others, we have an ever-strengthening pathway into the senior ranks. Our Youth members now exceed fifty and this next generation is really starting to have a presence around the Club. They’re training and on the beach every Sunday, patrols are being overrun by teenagers and they’re regrettably beating the Seniors at Club Champs. It will not be long before this generation is running Swanny and all Club communications will be via TikTok. After an extensive benchmarking exercise, a new membership fee structure was rolled out in 2020-2021. Our objectives were to continue to offer the best value of any Perth metropolitan club, ensure fee parity for our membership categories and provide options to suit the differing levels of member involvement, all of which I believe we accomplished. The other major change to the membership fee structure this season was the introduction of Family Membership Caps. The previous fee structure only afforded Nipper families discounted memberships. With Swanny evolving to now include a healthy Youth contingent, we have introduced Family Membership Caps to include any dependent children up to 21 years of age. Our hope is the Family Membership Caps benefit and will continue to benefit a larger number of Swanny families, particularly those who are active Swanny contributors.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
It’s funny how things work sometimes. For two years Luke Bishop and the building sub-committees have worked tirelessly to secure the necessary funding for our building extension, only to constantly fall agonisingly short. There was a global pandemic, political games and multiple funding partners only willing to commit if another partner did so first. Consequently, in March 2021, despite two years of lobbying, Swanny had no concrete commitment to the project from all levels of government and grant providers. Fast forward one month and Swanny has secured $1.61M and is on its way to securing a further $280K from all levels of government and Lotterywest. There are many members who have contributed to this achievement but without Luke’s effort and perseverance this project would still be a concept. Luke has overseen extensive grant applications, networked all levels of government, attended endless meetings and generated media publicity to get this over the line for us. None of this work is what anyone, except possibly Tim Tucak, would consider enjoyable or a reason to be involved in surf lifesaving, which is why I believe Luke is owed such a great deal of gratitude from the Club. Thanks LB!
Equally important to this project’s success has been Dan Juengling. Dan instigated the building extension project during his tenure as President and he has not stopped giving his time and expertise since. Dan has produced countless iterations of the plans based on member feedback and his generosity is delivering Swanny a construction ready project with minimal cost outlay. Thanks DJ! A big thank you also to the Federal Government, Western Australian State Government, City of Nedlands (budget approvals permitting…) and Lotterywest who have all committed funding to this extremely important project.
Having not spent enough time in the world of bureaucracy, Luke also established a sub-committee with Tim Tucak and myself to renegotiate our annual City of Nedlands (CoN) grant and address a long-standing issue, to include the patrol tower on our lease. The annual grant is a major source of Swanny income, delivering $44,956 to the Club this season so the importance of this funding cannot be underestimated.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
Thanks to Tim’s meticulous record keeping, Luke’s doggedness and his ability to navigate red tape we were successful in negotiating an extension of the annual grant through to 2034. It should be noted, CoN Administrators and certainly CoN Councillors are great supporters of Swanny, so after some early uncertainty, the process was relatively seamless. The annual grant is no longer associated with our loss of income from the café demolished by Council in 2006, but for the significant contributions you all make in keeping the Swanny community safe, which is a fantastic outcome.
Thank you to Maia Simmonds (Club Secretary), Kevin White (Buildings Officer), Emma Chaffey (Environmental Impact Officer), Tim Tucak (Historical Records Officer and Safety Officer) and Club Administrator Jacqui Ross for your continued contributions to Swanny. I appreciate that you all just get in and do your roles to the highest of standards. Shout out also to the entire Management Committee! Meetings can drag on, the timing of Swanny work is often not convenient, but it is easy to be involved when every single member of the Management Committee is a major contributor and more importantly, they’re all quality individuals! Special thanks to those electing to not throw their patrol caps in the arena and go around again, Annie, Gunz and Dave Parsons, you will be missed, how about a role in the exciting Finance and Administration portfolio?
Swanny continues to fire in all areas, including finance, with total revenue up 14.1% to $407,409 and our bank balance growing $168,771 to a healthy $658,453. We have managed to navigate our way through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic with minimal financial impact. Special mention must go to Brodie Price, Nick Hudson and Justin Owens for the way they responded when an unexpected lockdown hit Swanny’s biggest fundraising weekend of the season. Despite Ocean Classic having to be cancelled, the Ocean Classic team delivered a profit of $18,303 thanks to a sensitive and sympathetic response which saw competitors donate a significant portion of their entry fee. Planning one Blue Party is hard enough, let alone planning two. Not only did our Social Manager Brodie Price do just that but he produced an event that delivered a $5,465 profit, the equal of last season and all whilst dealing with stringent council regulations and reduced capacity. The major variances in revenue for the season are outlined below:
• Federal Government Job Keeper and COVID-19 related stimulus incentives contributed $33,500.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
• Our resident ATV Officer and budding used car salesman Jol Godbold secured $14,000 for the sale of the Club’s retired ATV. This Lifesaving revenue offset the loss of water safety income associated with the cancelled SwimRun Rottnest event.
• Membership growth and the revised membership fee structure generated a further $12,745 in membership fees.
• The SLSWA annual grant contributed $10,050 of funding to the Swanny coffers. This funding was not provided last season due to COVID-19 however the SLSWA annual membership charges were also not incurred last season so the net impact is negligible.
• Social income increased by $10,460 due to the delayed 2019-2020 Annual Dinner.
• Marketing revenue decreased by $19,814 due to in part to our cancelled Ocean Classic and reduced sponsorship and member donations. It should be noted, 2019-2020 was unique for member donations due to the establishment of the Gallery of Greats.
Whilst Swanny revenue was at record levels, our expenses also increased by 20.4% to $259,261. The increased expenditure this season was a conscious decision by the Management Committee after an era of saving for the building extension. For the first time in many seasons, we invested in three new surf skis and Kevin White practically stole two surf boats and a trailer from one of our well-heeled neighbours, paying only $3,000. Thanks to our resident IT geeks, the brothers Bishop, the Club also purchased new audio-visual equipment to enhance our education delivery and unfortunately make Management Committee Meetings harder to avoid. The Club is starting to succumb to the ravages of the sea, with maintenance repair costs increasing by $11,307. Much of the repair work was associated with water ingress and corrosion and whilst we have implemented low-cost patch repairs, the recommendation is that the entire roof be replaced. Similarly, there are many other elements of the club that require refurbishment such as the external façade and it is our intention, budget permitting, that these much-needed works will be incorporated into the building extension project.
The other major variances in expenditure for the season are outlined below:
• Administrator wages increased $7,755 due to a combination of Job Keeper payments, an hourly rate increase and additional hours of work over the busy Summer period.
• Detailed engineering design works for the building extension project commenced, with $9,594 in consultant fees incurred.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
• SLSWA reinstated its annual membership charge after the COVID-19 related cancellation of fees last season. Swanny incurred a $13,224 membership fee and the net result of the SLSWA grant and membership charges was a loss of $3,174.
• Hosting two Annual Dinners in one season contributed an additional $9,378 of costs to Social, some of which was offset by lower member event expenses.
Thank you to every single member for contributing to another massive Swanny season, enjoy your winter hibernation. Please find below the Club audited financial accounts for 2020-2021. Mark Grzanka - Finance and Administration Manager

Report on the Audit of the Financial Report Opinion
We have audited the accompanying special purpose financial report of Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club Inc (the Association) which comprises the Statement of Financial Position, Statement of Deposits and Accounts as at 30 April 2021, the Statement of Receipts and Payments for the year ended and the notes comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information.
In our opinion, the financial report of Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club Inc presents a true and fair view of the financial position of Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club Inc as at 30 April 2021 and the results of its operations for the year ended on that date in accordance with the accounting policies described in Note 1 to the financial report and the requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act (WA) 2015.
Basis for Opinion
We conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor's Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Statement section of our report. We are independent of the Association in accordance with the ethical requirements of the Accounting Professional and Ethical Standards Board's APES 110 Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants (the Code) that are relevant to our audit of the financial statement in Australia, and we have fulfilled our other ethical responsibilities in accordance with the Code.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.
Emphasis of Matter - Basis of Accounting
We draw attention to Note 1 to the financial report, which describes the basis of accounting. The financial report has been prepared to assist Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club Inc to meet the requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act (WA) 2015, As a result, the financial report may not be suitable for another purpose.
As is common for organisations of this type, it is not practical for Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club Inc to maintain an effective system of internal controls over donations, subscriptions and other fundraising activities until their initial entry into the accounting records. Accordingly, the audit in relation to fundraising and cash receipts was limited to testing amounts recorded in the books.
Our opinion is not modified in respect of this matter.
Responsibility of the Management Committee for the Financial Report
The management committee is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in accordance with the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporations Act (WA) 2015 and for such internal control as the management committee determines is necessary to enable the preparation and fair presentation of a financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
In preparing the financial report, the management committee is responsible for assessing the Association's ability to continue as a going concern, disclosing, as applicable, matters relating to going concern and using the going concern basis of accounting unless the management committee either intends to liquidate the Association or to cease operations, or has no realistic alternative but to do so.
The management committee is responsible for overseeing the Association's financial reporting process.
Swanbourne Nedlands Surf Life Saving Club | 88th Annual Report & Financial Statements | 2020-2021
Auditor's Responsibilities for the Audit of the Financial Report
Our objectives are to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial report is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error, and to issue an auditor's report that includes our opinion. Reasonable assurance is a high level of assurance but is not a guarantee that an audit conducted in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards will always detect a material misstatement when it exists. Misstatements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if, individually or in the aggregate, they could reasonably be expected to influence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of this financial report.
As part of an audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards, we exercise professional judgement and maintain professional scepticism throughout the audit. We also:
● Identify and assess the risks of material misstatements of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error, design and perform audit procedures responsive to those risks, and obtain audit evidence that is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our opinion. The risk of not detecting a material misstatement resulting from fraud is higher than for one resulting from error, as fraud may involve collusion, forgery, intentional omissions, misrepresentations, or the override of internal control.
● Obtain an understanding of internal control relevant to the audit in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the Association's internal control.
● Conclude on the appropriateness of management's use of the going concern basis of accounting and based on the audit evidence obtained, whether a material uncertainty exists related to events or conditions that may cast significant doubt on the Association's ability to continue that a material uncertainty exists, we are required to draw attention in our auditor's report to the related disclosures in the financial report or, if such disclosures are inadequate, to modify our opinion. Our conclusions are based on the audit evidence obtained up to the date of our auditor's report. However, future events or conditions may cause the Association to cease to continue as a going concern.
● Evaluate the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates, if any, and related disclosures made by management.
● Evaluate the overall presentation, structure and content of the financial report, including disclosures, and whether the financial report represents the underlying transactions and events in a manner that achieves fair presentation.
● We communicate with those charged with governance regarding, among other matters, the planned scope and timing of the audit and significant audit findings, including any significant deficiencies in internal control that we identify during our audit.
