Director’s Welcome - Reaching Out

I am delighted to welcome you to the RIAM’s second Teaching Network Conference. The RIAM Teaching Network was set up in 2014 with the goal of reaching out to the many thousands of practical music teachers in Ireland, to facilitate their own professional development and also to foster a community of practice through networking events.

We are delighted with the response from teachers who have joined up. One major new development is the expansion of Jennifer O’Connor-Madsen’s role as coordinator of the RIAM Teaching Network from next September, as part of an increasing investment in this area from the RIAM, so you can expect exciting new initiatives in the months and years ahead.

This year’s conference continues in this spirit of ‘reaching out’. We have put together a programme which challenges you to expand your own skill-set, and also describes settings for music performance that move beyond the concert hall or traditional lesson format. We continue to offer focused advice on repertoire and aspects of music technique, and we will introduce you to RIAM’s new advanced training programmes for those teachers who wish to engage in more in depth study.

I look forward to meeting you over the course of the two days.

Deborah KelleherDirector, Royal Irish Academy of Music

Teaching Network Welcome

I am delighted to welcome you to the second RIAM Teaching Network Conference. This past year has been a busy one for the RIAM Teaching Network. We launched our first E-Course, with Kim Fallen Bailey on teaching Leaving Certificate music, we held several workshops for teachers including the Key Skills workshops last autumn, a workshop for Flute Teachers in February 2015 with William Dowdall, head of the RIAM Wind, Brass and Percussion Faculty and a workshop on Group music teaching, in association with the RIAM Cara Awards in April 2015. Our network has also grown to include 670 members, based all over Ireland. We are delighted with the involvement of teachers all over the country with the RIAM Teaching Network. We hope to grow it further next year. Therefore, if you have any suggestions for resources or workshops you would like to see us include, please let me know.

This event would not be possible without the help of so many people in the RIAM, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them.
