A Rubbish Day Out! Report by Polly Judd - Year 8

O n Monday 21st of March, the members of the Marine Awareness Group travelled to the Eden Project. Many different schools, both primary and secondary, came to try and win £500 in order to fund their projects based around a question: What can we do to help create and maintain a litter free community? This was supported by the group "Be The Change". Our ideas were to replace all the polystyrene boxes in the school with cardboard boxes or another reusable container and to stop selling bottled water in the canteen. This would save a lot of plastic which could help to answer the question. Another idea was to make a bin - but not any old bin! This bin would use the "Fun Theory", something that makes a tedious task fun and therefore means that people are more likely to recycle their plastics. This bin would be like a helter-skelter for waste. (Have you ever seen those donation boxes that the money

rolls down? Well this bin is designed like that!) That morning the Marine Awareness Group set off on the minibus. With us we had props, a PowerPoint and an imaginative script for the three readers: Meg Smith and Becky Prout from Year 9 and Rosie Elliot in Year 7. We went into the main building and settled down before the presentations. We saw some other pitches, which all had great ideas in, before the three girls walked up to the stage and presented. They did a really good job and spoke clearly with no

mistakes. Even the audience participation went brilliantly too! After a snack, our group took part in the "Trasher Hunt" where we marked a place on a map whenever we saw litter and answered questions on a sheet. It allowed us to explore the Eden Project more and have some free time. And then finally - the moment we all had been waiting for - the results! Unfortunately, our team was narrowly beaten by another school. However, we were congratulated for our well researched, well-rehearsed and realistic pitch. At last, we returned to school. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that it was an amazing experience! We will still continue to try and carry out our plans for a litter free community even without the money. If anyone likes the idea of making a change then go to Miss Robertson in room 201 and she'll be happy to tell you when the next meeting is!

Actor Geoff Leesley - Mr Birling - Visits School

F ollowing a school trip to the Hall for Cornwall to see J B Priestley’s ‘An Inspector Calls’ it materialised that the actor who plays Mr Birling, Geoff Leesley, is actually the uncle of Year 11 student, Oli Pritchard. Mr Leesley, who has also appeared in television series such as The Bill, Coronation Street, Little Britain and Midsomer Murders, kindly offered to come into school to give a workshop and Q&A session on the rave reviewed Stephen Daldry production of ‘An Inspector Calls’ to over 100 Year 11 students. This developed into a wider discussion on the meaning of the play, 1940s politics and the life of a professional actor. Students

learned that Mr Leesley likes to give the unpleasant Mr Birling a sympathetic side, that it is more enjoyable to play bad guys than good guys and that one of the greatest challenges of a professional actor is keeping one’s performance fresh. Students clearly valued the experience and Connan Bland said: “Hearing from the actor who played Mr Birling gave me a better understanding of his character in the play and Priestley’s intentions. I found it very beneficial and an enjoyable experience that has helped to prepare me for my exam.”

Oli Pritchard, Mr Birling’s nephew said - “It is not every day that your uncle gives you and your friends valuable insight into the play and I feel as if I am now even better prepared for my Inspector Calls exam.” An Inspector Calls played at the Hall for Cornwall 2 weeks ago and West Briton reviewer, Peter Harlow, said it ‘could be the could be the best show to visit HFC

S tudents from Richard Lander School took part in the County Music Festival (March 15th – 19th) and came away with trophies, certificates and high praise for their outstanding level of music making. Many students had individual successes in solo instrumental classes including Josephine Cowley who came first in two of the piano classes, with an ‘Outstanding’ grade in both also performing in the piano Concerto class. Josephine also won the Rosemary Hereford Shield for the best piano solo performance of the week. Izzy Hopton won the Woolcock Shield for the best solo recorder performance of the week. Ben Keast won the recorder Sonata class with 90 marks and another Outstanding grade.

Students also worked hard to pull together pieces for the duet and trio recorder classes – in which Richard Lander School won

everything! Sophie Winfield won her piano solo class and came second in her flute solo class. Taverner Choir rehearsed really hard to learn a new piece for the music festival and gave a good rendition of the piece by Palestrina in Latin. They then sang the ‘Les Mis’ arrangement that they

performed at the School Showcase. The adjudicator was so impressed by them and the other choirs that he said he had never heard such an amazingly high standard of choirs all in one class! Taverner were awarded a Distinction mark and should be very pleased with their performance! The school Jazz Band performed early on Friday morning. The adjudicator was so impressed with their performance that she felt she couldn’t offer any advice for improvement – she just sat, listened and enjoyed all three pieces. She awarded them 90 marks and an Outstanding, which is a first for the band since it started over eleven years ago.

Following on from Terpsichore’s brilliant performance at the ‘Music for Youth’ competition, they

gained 90 marks (Outstanding) at the County Music Festival. They performed so well in the

competition that they were asked by the adjudicator to perform in the Gala Concert – a real honour! During the Gala Concert, additional awards were given out for the best performances of the week and Terpsichore were presented with the Lightbown Cup for the best ensemble, band or orchestra of the week. A fantastic week of music making! All the students that took part should be VERY pleased with themselves. A big thank you to all the parents, friends and relatives that came to listen to us during the week – it’s great to have support in the audience!

Success at the Magistrates' Court Mock Trial Competition

W ell done to our Mock Trial team who competed against Looe Community Academy At Truro Magistrates Court last Friday and won the local round of the competition. The Magistrates' Court Mock Trial Competition, which has been running annually since 1994, introduces the legal system to young people in an innovative and exciting way. In the roles of lawyers, witnesses, magistrates and court staff, students prosecute and defend specially written criminal cases. Teams compete against each other in real Magistrates' courts in front of real magistrates. The team has been working very

hard in preparation for the event with the help of a Magistrate who has been coming into school to work with the team. Every student played their character fantastically and performed with such confidence while in the courtroom. The team are now preparing themselves for the next round of the competition which will take

place in Newport in May. The Mock Trial team are Megan Llewellyn, Tabitha Lester-Smith, Freya Cooper, Jess Georglin, Joe Barber, Ethan Williamson-Bates, Tabby Lester-Smith, Nesta Griffths, Zena Baulk, Sophie Gibbons, Katie Martin, Corey Olive and are pictured here with Mr Forward and Miss Squires.

Year 7 Enjoy the Roller Coaster Challenge

S cience week saw the return of the roller-coaster challenge for Year 7 students. Students were given 4 lessons to design a roller-coaster using an online simulator, learn how to calculate speed and finally to create a company to design a rollercoaster using their budget of £8! The rules of the challenge stated that the ‘cart’ must reach a speed of over 0.5 m/s, the structure must reach over

60cm in height, the track had to have at least one loop and speed had to be reduced slowly to prevent whiplash. Overall, it was a great week and students thoroughly enjoyed the STEM challenge! If you want to design your own rollercoaster you can try this online: http://content3.jason.org/resource_content/content/digitallab/4859/misc_content/public/coaster.html

Year 8 Make Models for Science Week

Y ear 8 have spent the last few weeks making models to enter into a competition this week to mark British Science Week. They had the choice of a Physics model; this year the theme being “Space”; a Chemistry model of an atom; or a Biology model of an internal organ. This year group have excelled in the quality of their entries with a huge number of Solar Systems and planets, rockets and even the

International Space station. There were model atoms made of everything imaginable; from polystyrene, wood or metal to cake. In terms of organs, there were delicate ears, functioning hearts and lungs as well as a rice crispie brain! The best entries were put forward to the final and judging took place on Friday. The winner was a fantastic Solar System with lights that even connected to a motor to make the planets orbit the Sun. Wow! Well done to Melanie Hewitt! In second place was Ellis Baldry with a

fantastic heart; connected carefully to a pump with a bottle of blood which worked perfectly. And in joint third place was Pretty Girl Lee who made a huge model eye cake as well as Emily Wright who made a model egg cell in the process of being fertilised! All of the models that made it to the final were awarded a Highly Commended. Well done to anyone who took part.

Mindfulness Taster Sessions for Year 11

R ob Dowling a local “Mindful Happiness Coach” joined some year 11 students on Tuesday to deliver an “Introduction to Mindfulness Taster Session”. The session included a look into how

the brain copes under stressful situations and Rob offered some short meditation techniques that the students could use prior to their examinations and to clear their minds ready for more focused revision sessions. Due to the success of the taster session Rob will be joining us to

deliver some more sessions in the lead up and during the examination period. Any students interested in attending these sessions should see Mrs Knight. For more information on Rob Dowling visit – www.behappy.coach

Making Sleighs with Bosvigo

I n March, to celebrate British Science Week, Richard Lander Design and Technology department were joined by 3 different year 5/6 classes from Bosvigo School to work on their theme of ‘The Arctic’. Students worked with Mrs Knight in pairs to create a wooden sleigh, this was so they could return to Bosvigo school and test them on a variety of different surfaces to look at the topic of “Friction”. The students from Bosvigo worked really well and were very competent on all the new machinery in the workshop. They were a pleasure to have in our school. Mrs R Knight Design and Technology Teacher

Tip 2 Toe - John O'Groats to Lands' End Off Road over Easter Mr Beech along with 5 of his friends are to spend 10 days over Easter attempting to ride the length of the UK on off-road motorcycles, using only the network of ‘green lanes’ (RUPPs - Road Used as Public Paths & BOATs - Byways Open to All Traffic). They are doing this to fulfil a lifetime’s ambition and to raise money for charity and have chosen 5 charities between them to support which include ‘Lander for Uganda’ and Pentire's chosen charity of the year - Cornwall Air Ambulance. Jackie Eastwood came into school assembly last week to teach Pentire students about the vital work of Cornwall Air Ambulance and Richie Carrington told students all about the trip.

Cornwall Air Ambulance is in it’s 29th year and has always been entirely funded by public donations. There were over 700 rescue missions last year alone with young people being rescued in around 10% of these. Mr Beech and the other bikers depart from sunny Cornwall on 28th March, they drive to John O’Groats and then they set off on the bikes for Land’s End. They are being supported by Martins Motorcycles of Brea Village, Philps World Famous Pasties & Rock Oil. We hope to keep you updated on their progress via the school Facebook page Above are some Pentire students with Mr Beech, Richie Carrington, 2 of the bikes and Jackie Eastwood from Cornwall Air Ambulance, and here are all of the charities Mr Beech and friends are inviting you to support Lander For Uganda -

Mr H Schofield - Nominated for Cornwall Teacher Awards

W e’re delighted to announce that ICT and Computing teacher Mr Schofield has been nominated for a Cornwall Teacher Awards in the category of ‘Outstanding Use of ICT.’ Nominated by year 11 students, he is up against Barbara Brittain, Penrice College and Mike Hatton, Pool Academy with the winner to be chosen by a panel of national education experts and announced at a ceremony at Truro Cathedral on April 15. Nikki Baron, from EMPRA who sponsor the awards, said of the nominees "These fabulous

individuals are an inspiration to us all. "They are changing lives and giving pupils and students in Cornwall knowledge and inspiration – far more than is on their job

descriptions. "To be shortlisted is a substantial achievement, so if you know any of them, please congratulate them." Mr Schofield—we congratulate you!

Million Stories of Sanctuary

O n the 11th March 8 students, all members of the Amnesty International and/or Marine Awareness Groups, went along to the ‘Cornwall: A Million Stories of Sanctuary’ event in Truro. This

included speakers from all over Cornwall talking about the projects they have been involved with trying to help refugees both in the UK and abroad, as well as international speakers representing charities and volunteer groups all working to ease the global current situation; the worst refugee crisis since WWII. The students were very

interested and engaged throughout – they learnt a lot and returned to school full of ideas of ways we could also make a difference.

News from the Art Department

Truro Combined Schools Art Project

T he ‘Kernow Tapestry’ that we have been working on with year 8 as part of the Truro Combined Schools Art project was finally completed. The piece showed the history of Cornwall from the big bang to present day. It incorporated printing, stitching , painting and various other techniques. It was a really inclusive collaborative project that all of Year 8 were part of. We went to the Lander Gallery and displayed it ready for the exhibition. It had a prominent position near the entrance of the gallery and was really eye catching. It was also really good to see how all the other local schools had interpreted the theme this year and there was a really diverse range of work on show. On the evening of the 10th March students, parents and staff were invited along to see a preview of

the exhibition. The evening started with a dance display by students from all the schools involved. They had spent the day in a workshop at Truro School to develop a dance to coincide with the exhibition. The dance really showed off the skills of all the students and was a great way to start the evening. Students and parents were then able to take a good look around the exhibition and see all the work that had been produced. The exhibition then continued for the next week and we had lots of really positive comments about the work that had been produced by Richard Lander students.

Year 7 Fantastic Fish

W ell done to Mr Rose’s Year 7 students who produced some fantastic fish for homework. Students were asked to create a fish out of unusual materials.

Students really got imaginative and there lots of exciting outcomes.

News from the Art Department continued

I t has been a busy few weeks in the Art department. We have been involved in a number of competitions, which have resulted in some great successes. Alfie Martin in Year 10 has done exceptionally well in the Rotary Young Photographer competition and recently won the district heat of this competition. Part of his prize will be to visit Falmouth University and see the amazing Photographic facilities that they have there. We also had a large number of entries for the Young Person’s Art Prize that the Exchange Gallery in Penzance ran recently. The competition was to design an avatar to coincide with their exhibition by David Blandy. David Blandy is a very current artist whose work reflects many aspects of popular culture. His influences include hip hop and soul music, computer games and manga.

Some of our entries for the competition have formed part of the exhibition which is really exciting . Also Joe Wilkes in Year 11 submitted a fantastic entry which was one of only three entries to receive a prize. It is pictured below . Joe went along to the prize giving evening at the gallery and was able to experience what it is like to be part of a prestigious exhibition. The exhibition goes on until the 16th April

Falmouth University 50 Second Film Challenge

F almouth University has been running a film making course for 50 years and to help mark this they set a film making challenge that was open to all film makers. The brief was to create a film of no more than 50 seconds of any genre or style but to incorporate the theme of 50 somehow. We had three students who entered and created really

imaginative films; Charlie Meads, Meg Llewellyn and Joe Barber. Charlie was inspired by skateboarding and Meg and Joe worked together on a film that was about what they would do with £50. They said they got the idea from watching other films on YouTube. Both films were fantastic and showed a really creative approach. Meg and Joe joined lots of University students at the Plaza Cinema in Truro to watch their film being shown on the big screen. They watched over 60 short films and said that they got lots of ideas for future films from watching such a diverse range particularly from the university entries.

GCSE Art 19th and 20th April GCSE Photography 26th and 27th April We also have the exhibitions of the Year 11 GCSE students Art and Photography work next term. We welcome all students and parents to come along and see the work that has been produced by students. It promises to be an exciting showcase of artwork.

Grey and Pink Kangaroos

4 of our finest mathematicians sat their Kangaroo papers last week. These are incredibly hard maths tests which you qualify for by attaining a very high score in the Intermediate Maths Challenge. The paper consists of 25 multiple choice questions which the students have an hour to complete. Although this may not sound too taxing, UKMT say that it is almost impossible to complete all 25, so students have to choose the questions which are most likely to earn them a high score. We await the results but qualifying in itself is a huge achievement so very well done to Cathy, Eloise, Tom and Harry!

Please Keep Saving Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers!

W e would be very grateful if you would save Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers and take them to Mr Bridger in the PE base. In previous years we have benefited from free equipment which has been used in PE lessons, in tutor activities, by our ARK students and at fundraising events such as Summer Fun in the Sun. This offer continues until May.

Thank you!

T hank you ever so much Tesco Truro for your kind donation of stickers, key rings, sand moulds, magnets, hair bands.. This items will be taken to Uganda this summer and used as classroom rewards in our partner schools. Well done to Chanel Sellers in year 10 for contacting Tesco and asking!

Why not try a new hobby with Kernow Petanque?

P etanque is a French game that is popular all over the word and here in the U.K. It is much like bowls but instead of rolling, the

boule, which are made of metal, are thrown through the air. Any student or parent wanting to try their hand at playing Petanque should see: Mrs S. Jarvis, Youth Development Office, Kernow Petanque. Mrs Jarvis is also a lunchtime supervisor at Richard Lander so, alternatively, just have a chat with her at lunchtime! For more information visit www.cornwallpetanque.co.uk

Year 10 Work Experience 11th to 15th July

T hank you to all the students who have met the provisional deadline for the return of Work Experience approval and consent forms. Could those students who have yet to do so please make every effort to return them by the May Bank Holiday weekend. Once these forms have been received by the school the information contained needs to be passed on to Cornwall Learning for them to do their Employer suitability visit and approve the placement. If any student is having difficulty securing a placement could they please be encouraged to see me in the first week back after Easter, as if I am not aware there is a problem I cannot help.
