To respond to both project needs and community input, FCDOT is moving forward with the selection of Option B. Fordson Road will remain open after station construction and operate as it does today, with full access to Richmond Highway. • The project was accepted in the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) “Project Development” phase, which is required to obtain New Starts funding. • Section 1 was extended from Boswell Avenue to Sherwood Hall Lane to better coordinate with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Corridor Improvements project. May 2020 was the first major project schedule update. Due to changes to the VDOT project schedule and other project needs, we now anticipate final completion of the project in 2030. Further schedule refinements are forthcoming. PROJECT BACKGROUND Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) is planning for a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system along Richmond Highway and North Kings Highway from Huntington Metrorail Station to Fort Belvoir. BRT is a high-quality public transportation system designed to be fast, reliable, and more convenient than traditional bus routes. The Richmond Highway BRT system will provide two dedicated BRT lanes in the roadway median for the majority of alignment, with a goal to bring enhanced transit quality, reliability, and safety to the corridor. ANTECEDENTES DEL PROYECTO El Departamento de Transporte del Condado de Fairfax (FCDOT) está implementando un sistema de tránsito rápido de autobuses (BRT) a lo largo de la autopista Ruta 1 (Richmond Highway) y la autopista North Kings (North Kings Highway) desde la estación de metro de Huntington hasta Fort Belvoir. BRT es un sistema de transporte público de alta calidad diseñado para ser rápido, confiable y más conveniente que las rutas de autobús tradicionales. El sistema Richmond Highway BRT proporcionará dos carriles dedicados en la mediana de la carretera para la mayoría de la alineación, con el objetivo de llevar una mayor calidad de tránsito, confiabilidad y seguridad al corredor.
