Dear Supporter’s,

I extend a very warm welcome to you all and would like to introduce our two new patrons. They are T.V. presenter Anna Richardson and Singer / Songwriter Jay Aston who was in Bucks Fizz. Jay was just nineteen when they won the Eurovision Song Contest. Both ladies are great animal lovers and we are truly delighted to have their support.

‘Friends of the Animals’ took Golden Retriever ‘Annabelle’ in, after her owners’ marriage broke down and the poor dog was being left for up to twelve hours a day.

‘Annabelle’ who is only 3½ years old, was unfortunately blind in one eye. Worse still, the lens had luxated and pressure behind the eye (which causes pain) was building by the day. She urgently needed to have the damaged eye removed. The quote for the surgery was £400, but great things can be achieved when kind people pull together and we are grateful to everyone who helped towards the cost.

Julie Reynold was a generous contributor; she wrote: “I have been privileged to be Annabelle's Foster 'Mum' and along with my family, have helped her through her surgery. She is being so good and hopefully will soon be enjoying life to the full again, as she so deserves. Thanks to the Charity for allowing us to help this gorgeous girl. Her forever family will have a devoted and beautiful girl, a loving companion”.

Supporters Pat & Stan Davies wrote: “We hope the operation will be a huge success and that Annabelle will then be offered a loving new home, for the rest of her life”. (Happily, Annabelle – re-named ‘Bella’ has now found her forever home). See left

The message from two owners who each had a Tibetan Terrier from us is: ‘if you have the space in your home and your heart, please have a rescue’.

“I adopted Sweep, a Tibetan terrier and I thought you would like to know that he is the best thing to ever

happen to us. If anyone is thinking of adopting a dog, do it. The rewards far outweigh any problems. We took him on a camping holiday, expecting to be kept awake at night as a dog in a tent is hardly ideal, but he was superb. Everyone commented on how good he was. He loved it. He really enjoyed going to the beach and swimming in the sea, it was so hot and the sun so strong that he took to wearing my sunglasses! He is a great little dog, spoilt rotten and we wouldn’t part with him for anything. He is happy, loving and settled and very protective of us and his garden, although he does invite the local cats in to drink from our water feature and then plays with them. He has doggy friends that visit as well”. Pam.

“Three year old Patch came into our lives a few weeks ago. We’d contacted F.O.T.A. as I was in need of a companion to walk with and Michael wanted a buddy to keep him company when he is at home. On our first visit to view Patch, Michael and Patch were quick to bond and I could tell that Patch was intelligent. I did however, have some reservations as we were told that Patch didn’t mix with other dogs and could not be let off of the lead. Everyone deserves a chance so we agreed to take him for a 2 week trial. He was very nervous at first, barking at everything including dogs that were a considerable distance away.

Patch now plays in the garden and only barks at strangers. He has a friend called Marley (see photo) who he encourages into our garden to play ball. Marley’s mum Cathy, myself, Marley and Patch meet up and walk along the beach or head off up to the Downs. He plays ball on the beach, swims in the sea and is not bothered by other dogs. Has also runs with Marley on the Downs and he’s swum in a pond! Luckily, he loves a bath and brush which is just as well. He enjoys the car and shopping and happily sits under the table when we eat out. Where we go, he goes. We are so happy we adopted him and absolutely love and adore him. He gives us a lot of love and has settled into our routine so well, it’s like he has always been with us. His only requirement is that he can play ball at every opportunity. Thank you so much Friends of the Animals for Patch and for all your support”. Jo x

In our last accounting year Friends of the Animals did: 371 bitch spays, 436 dog neuters, 193 cat spays, 164 cat neuters, 72 rabbit spays, 131 rabbit neuters and 1,737 other veterinary treatments.

As you can see, in addition to re-homing animals, the Charity does a huge amount of spaying / neutering, working hard to ensure the areas in which we operate are kept as ‘stray free’ as possible. ‘Buster’ who lives in Worcester, was our 25,000th neuter. We thought this

was quite a milestone, but I’m pleased to say – we are now up to 36,000 !

(What an irony ! I have just stopped typing in order to take a telephone call from a man named Lewis who is in Birmingham. ‘Tilly’ his British Bulldog has just been rushed to the Vets with Pyometra a fatal womb infection if left untreated. Pyo only occurs in un-spayed bitches. We would have got ‘Tilly’ spayed for £90-00. The cost of the surgery the poor dog is now facing is a massive £1,148-00. We are willing to contribute, but the owner will still be left with an enormous bill).

(What a double irony ! The following morning we were contacted by another owner whose bitch also has Pyometra. This owner lives many miles from the first owner and at his local Vet, we would have charged him £125-00 for a bitch spay. Unfortunately, he has been quoted an astounding £1,700-00 and has no choice but to go ahead, as without immediate surgery his bitch will not survive).

Had she not come into our care when she did, ten year old Golden Retriever ‘Spirit’ would not have made it either, as she too had full blown Pyometra. We took her straight to the Vets where she was immediately put on a drip and given anti-biotics. The following day, she was operated on and her nails (which were so long they curled into her pads) were clipped. ‘Spirit’ was finally safe, but she needed love and I’m pleased to say that Lance her lovely new owner ensures she has it in spade loads.

We are a small Charity with limited funds but our neutering scheme is open to any owner genuinely struggling to find the money. One lady e.mailed:

‘I’m hoping to get my bitch Missy spayed. She is 9 months old and she had her first season over the Summer. She is our pride and joy. My husband was out of work for 2 years and we accumulated massive debts to keep our house and are struggling to afford getting her spayed. My husband is now in a low paid job and so we get tax credit, but our joint income is less than our debts each month and we are drowning in a sea of debt. We are saving £10 a month towards getting Missy spayed, but at this rate she will have to go through another season. She was

Page 5: RICK WAKEMAN who is a wonderful, supportive Patron visits ......RICK WAKEMAN who is a wonderful, supportive Patron visits our base Newsletter 66 HEAD OFFICE 17a RIVERWAY NEWPORT I.O.W

so sad during the last one and we couldn’t bear it to happen again, if you can help that would be wonderful and we would pay as much as we can towards the cost. Missy is a rescue pup, a Staffy cross, small/medium build, beautiful nature and the only good thing in our lives’.

When we contacted Missy’s owner offering to help, she replied:

‘I just wanted to say thank you. In the 2 years we've lived like this no one has helped because we work, I know we would be better off on benefits but I don't want to. This takes such a big worry away. Thanks again’.

To receive our help you must be able to reach one of the 38 Vets we use. Please ring our office on 01983-522-511, Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am. Much as we would like to, we do not have the funds to increase the number of Vets we use, or the areas we currently cover.

THANK YOU to the following supporters:

Sarah Mc’Ilrevery who runs “ALL STARS DOG TRAINING CLUB” in North End, Portsmouth is pictured presenting a whopping £400-00 in cash to Linda Docherty. We were to have had a cheque but one of the dogs ate it! (Left)

Matty & Rich Ward from EVOLUTION GYM in Ryde, whose members raised £108-45 in one hour for rescued animals. (Right)

Lin Lenox knitted this truly spectacular Noah’s Ark and all the animals – there’s even a dove of peace on the roof. We auctioned it and were

delighted when a generous supporter in Birmingham put in a bid of £200-00.

Shelly Cook organised a ‘freezing cold’ SOLENT SWIM FUNDRAISER and raised a superb £460-83. We thank all the very brave swimmers who took part.

Thank you Samantha English who sends us knitted blankets. Samantha e.mailed: “I hand make the blankets and I hope your animals find great comfort in them and pleasure like I did making them”.

Lee Hayden’s Christmas lights display also raised vital funds for local animals.

The area behind our car park has been transformed thanks to ‘Super Steve Bridgeman’ who started off the concrete fund, plus a great team of workers – and several tons of concrete !

The Belgium Shepherd is ‘Ted’ (see right) who lost a leg and most of his tail when he was hit by a train (see newsletter 62). A few weeks later ‘Ted’ ran off and after spending days in dense undergrowth and running into the freezing cold sea, he was eventually caught by Mark Trussler, who headed the team who did the concreting ! and here are ‘Ted’ and Mark being re-united. When a five month old puppy fell from a balcony, the little chap only managed to survive as he bounced off the conservatory roof, which broke his fall. We contributed the proceeds from many hours spent at a street collection and it was disappointing not to even receive a verbal thank you.

We are frequently the difference between an animal receiving treatment – or not. A lady contacted us desperate for help towards the cost of repairing her Chihuahua’s hernia. She’d been quoted £1,400-00. ‘Our’ Vet provided a free consultation and did the same work for £189-00. A saving of £1,211-00 !!

Even more astonishing is the case of ‘Missy’ the Springer whose leg was broken in three places. The owner was quoted £5,000-00. ‘Our’ Vet did it for £1,000-00. Jillie Wheeler who runs ‘Cassie’s Care 4 Pets’ generously contributed £350-00, making surgery for ‘Missy’ possible. Thank you Jillie for all your help.

Sam and Sadie’s original owner contacted us when due to a change in circumstances she needed to find new homes for two of her four dogs. Unfortunately, neither dog was neutered and both were in need of (costly) radical dentals. Chris and Nigel fostered them both and it became apparent they should be rehomed together. Not many people will take on two dogs and so we contacted the ‘County Press’ who ran a story.

Happily, we had several responses and we chose Margot and James as they already had a Pekinese and loved the breed. At first Sam and Sadie were intent on chasing the cat but this soon settled as you can see from the photograph of them all cuddled up on the sofa. We got both dogs neutered and after their dentals, they are toothache free and eat everything put in front of them. Margot and James have visited our office on several occasions and continue to be absolutely delighted with their new additions.

Roly is a beautiful Dachshund who was suffering from separation anxiety. His owner was unfortunately ill and every time she was taken to hospital, the dog became more confused. When it comes to re-homing an animal, timing is everything and fortunately we had the perfect home already lined up with a couple who had been on our ‘Wants’ list for a considerable time. Unfortunately, Roly had very bad teeth and as with most dentals it cost the Charity quite a bit to get him sorted out.

(Left): netting a seabird with a badly broken wing. (Right) This is ‘Chicken’ an ex-breeding Persian. We paid half of the veterinary bill when the poor cats’ mouth became stuck open after he’d dislocated his jaw.

“You do some incredible work at ‘Friends of the Animals’, the paws in the world need more of you! With heartfelt thanks, keep up the great work”. Tracey Morley Jewkes Managing Director of Blacks Vets in the West Midlands, ‘U.K. Practice of the Year’ winner. We send our thanks to the Practice for a cheque for £237-00 representing the proceeds of their New Year Party Raffle.

Congratulations to our lovely supporters Michael & Wendy Murwill, who were married by the Ship’s Captain whilst at sea in the West Indies. We are grateful for the collecting they do and for the advice they give us, but especially for the love and care they gave to ‘little Georgie’ who was the most neglected dog we’ve rescued in almost 30 years.

Lots of people will adopt a small dog, but very few are willing to take on a large one. This meant that ‘Rocky’ the American Bulldog was in our care for months, rather than the usual days or a few weeks maximum. However, we firmly believe there’s a home out there for every nice natured animal – it’s simply a matter of finding it ! ‘Rocky’ found his perfect home with Steve and Jurgita Bate and their two daughters. Jurgita is a runner and so ‘Rocky’ has a four to five mile run every day, which is just what this lovely, young dog needs.

We are very pleased to be partnered by TWO Pets at Home Stores and this photo shows one of TWO pallets of bird seed which their charitable arm ‘Support Adoption for Pets’ generously donated. The seed was distributed promptly and with care and sustained many birds over what was an exceptionally cold Winter. We have also recently received a cheque for a wonderful £1,932-25 plus vouchers totalling £495-00 the latter from V.I.P. lifeline points. Our thanks to the friends and families whose love of animals moved them to make ‘In memoriam’ donations for the following loved ones:

“In memory of my lovely wife MARGARET BOLTON. We had been married for almost 49 years. She became totally disabled and lived the last four years of her life in Hazel Lodge Nursing Home. The staff, clients and Margaret all looked forward to my visits where ‘Boo’ (rescued Greyhound) would join me and cheer everyone up - they all loved her dearly. I would give Margaret little treats to give to Boo which she took so gently in her mouth. The pleasure that Boo has given us is too great to measure and I will always be grateful to Friends of the Animals who let her come into our lives”. - Ken Bolton.

“In memory of my dear beloved Sister DAPHNE ADAMS. We were such good pals and I miss her so much”. – Jean Kettle. Portslade. Sussex.

“In memory of our wonderful Mom – BEATRICE LLOYD – who is sadly missed every single day. – Kathleen Hiscock and (sister) Dorothy Claxton. Pensnett. West Midlands.

“In memory of my husband RON and my sister JUNE”. - Mary Tipper. Gt Barr Birmingham.

“In memory of my lovely sister JULIE SKELTON” – Gill Phillips, Chillerton.

“In memory of my cousin MARION McEWEN”. – Jan Edwards, Old Coulsdon, Surrey.

“In memory of our Son GARETH THOMAS WHITE”. – Mr & Mrs H. White. Hayling Island.

“In memory of my Dad EUGENE HOPKINS who always supported Friends of the Animals”. – Claire Hopkins. Newport I.O.W. (Grateful thanks also goes to neighbours at Worsley Court in Wroxall).

“In memory of BIDDY THOMAS”. – Bridget Tallack. Portsmouth.

“In memory of my Mother PAMELA GREVESON”. – Amanda Morris. Pershore, Worc’s.

“In memory of our special Mom PAT RADFORD; she was so very proud of Helen’s accomplishment in starting up this wonderful Charity. Instead of flowers we asked for donations to continue the Charity’s amazing work. Mom loved animals greatly particularly her dog Judy and our dog Joop”. Jackie, Sally and family - Oldbury West Midlands.

“In memory of my husband BRIAN” – Teresa Bailey. Ryde I.O.W.

Donations were also received in memory of BARBARA ROBINA COX.

Remembering the late MARY GAYLOR who kindly left the Charity £1,000-00.

I love visiting Museums and always make a beeline for the old photographs and so I was especially interested to receive this very old photo and the following message from Andrew Winton a supporter in London: “I do not have a good photo of Mum, but here is one of her with her father and brother David with ‘Sandy’ the dog. My mother was HEATHER WINTON, born in Lahore

(then part of British India) in 1920. Her father was an engineer from Manchester, working on the railways there. She returned to England and lived in Woldingham Surrey. Throughout our family life in East Finchley, we had a succession of cats, all of which Mum looked after”.

Andrew has made a generous donation in memory of his Mother, which we have used to purchase a quantity of eye catching tabards and dog coats, for use when out fundraising. A commemorative plaque is also to be placed in our office.

Readers are invited to send in donations and messages in memory of, or in appreciation for much loved pets.

“In memory of our beautiful Bearded Collie ‘LADY’. We adopted her from F.O.T.A. when she was nearly 5 years old and we had 8 wonderful years with her. She was loyal, affectionate and the centre of our lives. We miss her so much”. – Trevor & Gillian Coward. Bembridge I.O.W.

“In memory of ‘MISHA’ our black Labrador. We all praise our dogs but Misha was special. During her entire life we never heard her growl. She loved people and other dogs. She was a joy to walk as she would instantly stop and look over her shoulder when we called or whistled and either returned immediately if we commanded “come” or would obey a hand signal indicating which path we intended to use. She always welcomed other dogs into the house when we took them in while the owners went on holiday. She had the sweetest nature one could wish for. We miss her so much. – Sally & Al Brown. Woodbridge near Ipswich.

“In memory of ‘LIZZY’ Sinclair a small Cairn / Scottie X. When we went to assess her, the male owner shouted at her to get into the room. Lizzy was terrified and crawled the full length of the lounge on her stomach. We took her there and then”.

“In memory of our beautiful ‘JAZZ’. We did not have you long but in that time you brought us so much love and happiness. We miss you. Mum & Dad” x. – Margaret & David Taylor. Scotland.

“In memory of ‘ROXY’ a much loved little dog. Always remembered by Molly Knight. Ryde.

“Remembering our lovely dog and lovely pony. We have an old Boxer that we know we will not have for much longer, but we look upon it as a blessing to have had these animals in our lives. Feel humble to have shared happy times with them”. – May & Stuart Griffiths. Hayling Island.

“A donation with love from the late ‘GRUB”. – Gillian Stokes. Ventnor. (Grub was a small, elderly Terrier, who prior to coming into Gillian’s care, had sadly been used as target practise).

“In memory of ‘MISSY’ my much loved Yorkie”. – Mary Weeks. Ryde.

“A donation in memory of little ‘GEORGIE’. She really did touch my heart”. – Janet Sagar.

We are fortunate to have the support of many prominent people, some as Patrons and others who work with us to improve the lot of animals within the Community. Pictured with our Head Office team is the High Sheriff Ben Rouse whom we were delighted to welcome to our base.

Every year, we provide veterinary treatment for several hundreds of cats. This includes everything from vaccinations and neuters to major support following road accidents.

Huge thanks to Brenda Gale who worked hard during the Winter and Spring, knitting over fifty woollen dog jumpers. Between chemotherapy sessions Brenda wanted to use her valuable time on a worthwhile project. So, using wool donated to our shop in Gunville, she used her passion for crafts and animals to create bespoke garments, with all of the proceeds coming to the Charity. ‘Jack Angel’ is seen here modelling one of the super jumpers.

Our rescued animals would like to say “thank you” to this wonderful Brownie Pack who avidly save foreign and obsolete coins for us. We cash them in and spend the money on saving animals.

*Thank you Claude Silavant in Sydney for the incredible help you have given us.* Mac & ‘Lucy’ and Ken & ‘Boo’ (Left) from the I.O.W. Caravan & Motorhome Club who have chosen F.O.T.A. as their ‘Charity of the Year’.

Julie Higginson and her partner Tim run the Waverley Inn in Carisbrooke and Julie made this wonderful white chocolate and lemon Easter cake for the Charity to auction.

Guinea Pigs need fruit and veg to obtain Vitamin C and this little fellow had to be taken to the Vets as he was suffering from a bad skin irritation partly due to a vitamin deficiency.

(Left) Peter Rabbit & Whiskers came into our care as their owners were in ‘no pet’ rented accommodation.

If only all rabbits had a large hutch, a grassed area, fresh veg, toys, companionship and very importantly – a knowledgeable owner.

For almost fifteen years, we have supported around 450 animals at ‘Farm Animal Rescue Sanctuary’ in Wolverton, Warwickshire. You too can help, by going to their website and sponsoring an animal. www.farmanimalrescue.org.uk/

Thank you to everyone who came along to our wettest Sponsored Walk yet. ‘Buddy’ & ‘Elvis’ went home in style in this fabulous 1956 Mercury Montclair; but after fun in the mud – came the dreaded shower !

Interestingly, ‘Buddy’ was only 19 weeks old when he came into our care.

“Our hearts broke when ‘Kali’ our 5 month old puppy got upstairs and on her way back down, going way too fast, she missed the last couple of steps and slammed onto the floor. We immediately knew she had broken her leg. After days of uncertainty and a huge bill racking up, we turned to ‘Friends of the Animals’ for help and advice. They really came up trumps for us. The lovely team were very caring and understanding and ‘Kali’ got the orthopaedic surgery and after care she needed. We are extremely grateful and lucky to have such a great Charity here. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.” – Nikki Pyke.

To date, we have used or handed out an incredible 1,608,000 items of pet food. Huge thanks goes to Tesco, Asda & Morrisons and to their generous customers

Pembrokeshire Coast Path Sponsored Walk 2018.

Photographed with Rick Wakeman are Steve Darch and partner Catherine. Last year, Steve raised an incredible £5K for animals in our care, by walking the full length of Offas Dyke. This year, he’s walking 186 – 200 miles (North to South) along the full length of the West coast of Wales.

He starts at St Dogmaels near Cardigan and finishes at Amroth near Saundersfoot. The trail follows the coastline where possible, which

ranges from precipitous cliffs and wild seas to long sandy beaches and dunes. Opened in 1970, it was the first national trail in Wales.

The walk starts on Sunday 3 June and finishes 14 days later on Saturday 16 June. This time Catherine and Shep will be joining Steve on his walk, either walking all of it, or parts of it - depending on whether they can keep up with him! Although the trail passes largely through dramatic countryside it also goes through several towns, Fishguard, St Davids, Milford Haven, Pembroke, and Tenby, it is 186 miles long, more if the tide is in and you have to go around estuaries and beaches, also dependent on the army ranges at Castle Martin being open or closed. Possibly nearer the 200 miles once you take in walking to and from accommodation and detours around stunning peninsulas such as Dinas Island near Newport Bay. Walking the whole route will mean a climb of 30,347 feet or 9,250 metres ! Distances are from a map so do not show the true on-the-ground mileage.

Day 1 St Dogmaels 15m to Newport, Day 2 7 miles to Fishguard, Day 3 15 miles to Tregwynt, Day 4 10 miles to Abereiddy, Day 5 13 miles to PorthClais, Day 6 13 miles to Nolton Haven, Day 7 10 miles to St Brides, Day 8 14 miles to Dale, Day 9 11 - 15miles to Castle Hall, Day 10 15 miles to Pwllcrochan, Day 11 16 miles to Castle Martin, Day 12 9 – 11 miles to Stackpole, Day 13 11 – 12 miles to Penally, Day 14 9miles to Amroth

Please support our animals by sponsoring Steve on what will be another arduous walk. Last year he raised a wonderful £5 K ! He bears all of his own expenses B & B for fourteen nights, food etc. So please, please make his efforts / blisters worthwhile by either: completing the enclosed form, ringing 01983-522-511 (Tues to Sat from 10 am) to make a donation by card or using the email address [email protected] to make your gift – PLEASE mark your gift “WALK”

Page 15: RICK WAKEMAN who is a wonderful, supportive Patron visits ......RICK WAKEMAN who is a wonderful, supportive Patron visits our base Newsletter 66 HEAD OFFICE 17a RIVERWAY NEWPORT I.O.W

Last year, we sent out e.mails giving updates on Steve’s progress. We also gave him a running total of the donations as they came in, which helped spur him on.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One in three of our veterinary treatments is paid for by a Will. If you are planning to make your Will – or update an existing Will, please consider including a gift for the animals we battle to save. Call 01983-522-511 for a copy of our Will booklet.
Remember money left to Charities is not taxable.
The Charity has wormed and inoculated many thousands of animals – often for the first time in their lives and every year, we provide veterinary treatment for thousands more, but we couldn’t do it without you. 96% of our staff are volunteers, which ensures as much as possible of your donation, goes towards helping animals.
You can make a card donation by calling 01983-522-511 (Tues – Sat) OR go to our website www.friendsoftheanimals.co.uk and use a button 24/7.
I enclose a donation of £……..….……..which I would like to be spent in the: MIDLANDS / ISLE OF WIGHT / PORTSMOUTH / SANCTUARY
