Princip

I am very pleased that the Raffles Institution Chinese

Orchestra has been given the privilege to perform in a

joint concert with Chung-Ang Traditional Orchestra in

Korea.

The concert, “Harmony” wonderfully depicts the beautiful

music that can come about in the fusion of two different

cultures. Apart from cultural understanding, the concert

also promotes the appreciation of instruments that

traditionally feature in the two orchestras.

I thank our Korean friends and partners for supporting

the joint performance and for giving our staff and al, Raffles Institution

The Chung-Ang Traditional Orchestra was established

in 1987 as an incorporated association to make Korean

traditional music a way of life by spreading heritages of

the music culture of Korea. While growing awareness

on the traditional music among the public, it also aims

to deliver various music cultures of the world. Since its

first production of Madang Nori (a traditional floor play)

for MBC, a major broadcasting company in Korea, CATO’s

repertoire has been extended to various collaboration

works from theatrical, professional concerts to screen

About CATO

music and pop concerts. CATO’s international projects

including musicians of Japan, China and the United States,

help broaden musical experiences among musicians

as well as audiences and has created new paradigm

to the public both domestically and internationally.

In 1989, the group was awarded the grand prize for

both the Group Performer and Organization categories

by the Annual Korean Traditional Music Grand Award

Festival hosted by KBS. CATO’s participation to Circum-

East Sea (Sea of Korea) Music Festival in 1991 opened

the new flow in music cultural exchange between South

and North Korea and it has tried various approaches

to meet the needs of audiences continuously. A

project to make improvements of Korean traditional

instruments helped CATO widen repertoires and favored

collaboration with other indigenous instruments.

Through such projects, CATO shaped the foundation

of the world’s first ‘Orchestra Asia’, a group of musicians

from Korea, China and Japan who gather together and

share each other’s music culture to create new genres.

Until recently, CATO was also a member of the ASEAN-

Korea Traditional Music Orchestra, which combined the

music of 10 ASEAN nations together with Korea, under

the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST).

Currently, its programs include ‘Korea Traditional

Ensemble Series’ which aims to educate traditional music

to elementary to high school by supporting chamber

music, and ‘Sound of Asia’, a project between musicians

of various Asian regions. Educational programs such as

‘Day at the Recording Studio’ and ‘Chung-Ang Traditional

Academy’ are being conducted in many cities around

Korea.

CATO’s main performance program for this year ‘Dancing

Orchestra’ will break the barrier between traditional

music and pop culture, by mixing it up all together with

chorographical movements combined with digital sound

sources within traditional music context. Nominated as

the best program of 2011 by Korea Culture Art Association,

this performance will again create a paradigm shift

among traditional music culture of Korea to the world.

Raffles Institution Chinese Orchestra was founded in

1987 under a combined initiative by then-Headmaster

RICO스토리The RICO Story

Mr Eugene Wijeysingha and founding teacher Mdm Jane

Ng to inject more vibrancy into the cultural scene in

Raffles Institution. This was in line with Mr Wijeysingha’s

vision that Raffles Institution was to become a globalised

community it is today, with which he persevered despite

two earlier failures to establish a Chinese Orchestra.

Through musical performances, community service and

other initiatives, RICO has actively promoted Chinese

music not only within the institution but within and

beyond Singapore.

Over the years, RICO has matured under the tutelage of

its conductors Mr Goh Yew Guan (1987-2002), the late Mr

Yeo Puay Hian (2002-2007), Mr Lim Kiong Pin (2007-2009)

and Mr Yang Ji Wei (2010-present). With the unwavering

support of the several instructors, RICO has

grown from barely an ensemble in 1987 to a full-fledged,

120-strong orchestra today. This has given RICO many

opportunities to collaborate with external organisations;

RICO has been invited to perform for the SYF @ VivoCity

(2008), Bukit Batok East Chinese Cultural Festival (2008),

Renci Charity Show (2006), the opening ceremony of

Parkway Group Healthcare’s 2nd International Healthcare

Facilities Exhibition & Conference (2006) and the

Singapore Chinese Orchestra’s National Day Concert –

Our People, Our Music (2004) – among others.

RICO also collaborates with orchestras overseas, including

Beijing’s Golden Sail Symphonic Band and Penang’s

Chung Ling High School Chinese Orchestra. In 2011, RICO

embarked on its first partnership with a professional

musical group – Seoul’s Chung-Ang Traditional Orchestra.

On the local scene, apart from its biennial concert series,

the Voices of the Dragon, the orchestra also puts up

regular performances for residents in the heartlands

through performances at Bishan Park, Toa Payoh Library’s

Amphitheater and the National Library and actively

supports charitable causes through performances at

the Singapore River. The orchestra has also performed at

Singapore General Hospital for its Music Therapy Program

and conducted lessons for residents in Bishan.

Since its inception, RICO has also participated regularly

in the biennial Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging,

winning 7 Golds and 4 Silvers, including 5 consecutive

Gold awards from 1991 to 1999. In 2010, in a bid to

bring musical excellence to new levels, the orchestra

saw a period of change with new teachers, instructors

and facilities, which saw it achieve a Gold award once

again at the 2011 SYF Central Judging, following a four-

year hiatus. The orchestra will continue to strive towards

greater heights.

(Goh Yew Guan, 1987-

(Yang Ji Wei

SYF@VicoCity (2008),

‘Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo’. An earth shared by people and a song given birth by our

mother land.

‘Arirang’ as being the song of people and their life, existed throughout the history long

lives of Koreans and their land. We see the past, present and future from its song and

moved when we sung. ‘ Featuring the ‘Arirang’ of each region of Korean peninsula, the

audiences is brought to experience various emotions each song bears.

Bonjo (Original tune) Arirang (Gyeong-gi Province)

Being regarded as a song that describes the lives of previous capital city of Korea, its

musical language uses various royal music cultures represented in the music of Chwita

and Jeryeak gracefully.

Jeongseon Arirang (Gangwon Province)

Being geographically isolated from other regions, the music of Gangwon province is

represented as its sheer lonesomeness and solitude as a character. Jeongseon Arirang

shows such emotion by using contrapuntal melodies.

Milyang Arirang (Gyeongsang Province)

As if the melody speaks of characteristics of its regional dialect, this song is sung in

cheerful and joyous melody with roughly written text.

Jindo Arirang (Cholla Province)

As a region presenting one of the most artistic and sensuous types of music, the music of

Cholla province uses various articulations within simple melodic structure.

‘춤추는관현악’은국악관현악사운드를확장하기

위해기존국악관현악편성에‘DIGITAL’악기음원을

더한작품이다.전체프로그램은기존의민요선율의

쉽게듣고즐길수있도록하였다.

What would the mixture of ‘digital’ elements to existing traditional orchestra sound like?

‘Dancing Orchestra’ features expanded sound and instrumental variety without losing

its tradition at heart. By using selected and the most-enjoyed folk tunes of Korea as

core elements and theme for the program, we hope to attract diverse audiences from

professionals to the general public.

A Well-Matched Fight

Composed by Prof Li Min-Xiong | Performed by Raffles Institution Chinese Orchestra

A percussion concerto well known for its rigour and richness in folk flavours, A Well-

Matched Fight was composed by Prof Li Min-Xiong. The theme is based on the zhendong

luo and gu, gong and drum classes. The composer makes use of a distinctive and unique

style to bring forth a striking a combination of percussion instruments. The drums and

gongs echo each other like a well-matched fight between the dragon and the tiger, two

symbols of power and might in Chinese tradition.

“Ongheya ongheya eojjeolsigu ongheya jjjeolsigu ongheya. Everything is well, ongheya.

Wang Zhong Shan,

연주:Nicholas Quek Wei Sheng

Spring Arrives at Xiang River

Composed by Ning Bao Sheng | Arranged by Wang Zhong Shan | Performed by

Nicholas Quek Wei Sheng

(Wang

Xiang

This piece was originally composed in 1977 by the late Ning Bao Sheng for the dizi.

Wang Zhong Shan later rearranged it for the guzheng, and in so doing, incorporated

performance techniques that are unique to both instruments into the piece.

The Xiang River is one of the largest tributaries of the Yangtze River and it is also the largest

river in the Hunan province of China. The lyrical melodies in the piece are reminiscent of

the original dizi melodies. They vividly describe the scenery around the river as spring

arrives, and when coupled with the gentle rolling of the waves, they stir one to imagine

oneself viewing a beautiful Chinese-ink painting of the area.

The introduction of a faster passage highlights the celebration of new life over the

lands by the people living around the Xiang River. The music expresses the passion and

optimism that the people exude as they work towards a brighter future.

one of the most representative pieces of the Red Classics during the Chinese Cultural

Revolution. The piece depicts the vigour and grandeur of the Yellow River, the root of

This piece was composed in 1982 by Xu Jing Xin and the late Chen Da Wei, who derived

their inspiration from their visit to the Mogao caves in Dunhuang, China in the same year.

The apsara is the female spirit of the clouds and water in Buddhism and Hinduism.

Symbolising freedom and happiness, the wife of the Gandharvas who serve Indra,

the Lord of Heaven, roams about the skies upon rainbows and clouds. Flying Apsaras

pictures the beautiful sight of the youthful, elegant god dancing in the wind, presenting

a feeling of distance. Consisting of three movements, the song commences with the

melody of gongs, touch bells and Yangqin, symbolising the apsara springing to life from

her portrait, bringing listeners into the world of heaven. As the piece progresses, she

enters a graceful dance in an increasingly bustling atmosphere. The heavenly soldiers

join in the parade, pushing the song to its climax. As the god returns to her portrait once

again, the piece ends in calm silence.
