  • Message from the SupervisorDear Josephians and Friends,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to our Green & White Concert 2015. This year is a very special year because we are celebrating the 140th Anniversary of the coming of the De La Salle Brothers to Hong Kong and the Founding of SJC. Hence, the organizing committee has gone all out to make tonight a night of surprises!

The Green & White Concert is the heart and soul of the Music Department. There are many past and present Josephians working strenuously behind the scene to make this night a memorable night for all of us. I wish to thank especially Mr Christopher Cheng (Music teacher) and Master Anson Ho (President of the Music Society) for their co-ordination and organization of the concert.

Now, let us sit back and be amazed by the performances that have been lined up for us!

Fraternally in La Salle,Bro Jeff Chan, FSCSupervisor

  • Message from the PrincipalDear Josephians, Parents and Friends,

Good Evening! It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to our Green & White Concert 2015. Our concert is momentous as it is one of the crucial events to commemorate the 140th anniversary of the coming of the Lasallian Brothers to Hong Kong and the founding of St. Josephs College.

We articulate the greatness of music and attach importance to all kinds of music activities and functions in our school. We established our School Orchestra in February 2000. Since its premiere in 2001, the Green and White Concerts have provided an excellent platform for our young musicians to demonstrate their passion, sharpen their talents and entertain their audiences with good music.

This year we have over 400 student musicians coming together from St. Josephs College and St. Josephs Primary School to perform in choirs, melodica band, Chinese drum band, percussion band, handchime team, handchime choir ensemble, chamber orchestra and school orchestra. We are grateful to Brother Jeffrey, Miss M. Tam and Miss R. Chan for their support and encouragement to our Josephians.

It is our great honor to have the pleasure of spectacular guest performances in this special occasion. We must thank our alumni artistes, Mr. Leung Chiu Fung and Mr. Kelvin Kwan, the choirs of St. Francis Canossian College and La Salle Primary School as well as the student dancers from Christine Liao School of Ballet for brandishing their talents and charm with us.

Finally, I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to Mr. Chris Cheng, our Music teacher, Anson Ho, the President of the Music Society, and all the committee members, musicians, choir members, conductors and teachers involved. We are indebted to them for their contribution to this majestic and enchanting event. May I wish the 140th Anniversary Concert a great success and all of you a most enjoyable evening!

    With best wishes,Ms. Caroline ChanPrincipal

  • Message from the Teacher-In-ChargeThere is one saying of my co-teacher: when a student is at a school, all they should do is learn, learn, and learn. I truly believe that this is realised in the campus of St. Josephs College. With great effort, generous help and constant encouragement from Brother Jeffrey and Ms. Caroline Chan, we know that performing arts is something beyond examinations and grades we also colour this black and white world. At the same time, we understand that we have to demand discipline, devotion and dedication, as it is the only way to excellence.

We would like to thank all conductors and instructors for their contribution throughout the year. The concert would not be successful without the hard work of our students and old boys: Jason Lee (President, 2012-2013, Current Teacher Assistant), Anson Ho (President), Ryan Pang (Vice President Choral Activities), Jason Lee (Vice President Orchestral Activities), Kingsley Tso (Vice President Instrumental Classes), to name but a few. Needless to say, our committee members and countless music boys are also of paramount importance to tonights concert.

It is our pleasure to have invited Christine Liao School of Ballet, St. Francis Canossian College, La Salle Primary School, St. Josephs Primary School, Mr. Kelvin Kwan and Mr. Leung Chiu Fung to perform with us.

Every note counts, every note matters. This is the fortitude musicians should always keep in their mind. With this motif, we wish to bring you an enjoyable evening here to share the fruit of the education we instil in every child entrusted to our care.

    Mr. Christopher ChengTeacher-in-chargeMusic Society

  • Message from the President of the Music SocietyOn behalf of the Music Society, it is my pleasure to welcome all of you to the Green and White Concert 2015.

Music has brought us together. It is true! Music has led us here in the hall tonight to enjoy the extraordinary performances by the students. Every year, the Green and White Concert provides a precious opportunity for Josephians to showcase their musical talents on stage. It is also time to recognize the huge effort being put into rehearsals and lengthy practice by the musicians. I respect and appreciate their exertions in striving for their best for tonight.

A moment of stardom on stage takes decades of hard work off the stage. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our Supervisor, Brother Jeffery Chan and our Principal, Miss Caroline Chan for their continuous support. In addition, our teacher-in-charge, Mr. Christopher Cheng, and other teacher advisors have furnished us with many pieces of advice in ensuring the quality of the concert. My appreciation goes to conductors and instructors of our performing groups for raising our student-musicians to a higher level of musical standard. I would also like to give a round of applause to all performers, my colleagues in the Executive Committee of the Music Society and all the helpers for their hard work in making tonights performance a success.

Last but not least, your presence tonight is the best encouragement to all of us. The Music Society and I would like to thank you once again and wish you a remarkable night with Josephians music.

  • CHINESE DRUM BAND

The Chinese Drum Band was formed in 2009 by a group of active Form 1 Chinese Drummers. The Band captured the bronze trophy in the New Tune Trophy Competition with fruitful experience gained. The size of the Band is doubled this year with the growing number of students who are interested in playing the drums. The Band is directed by Ms. Chu Yan Ling and managed by Mr. Christopher Cheng. The Band is at the stage of exploring the interactions of performers, audience and special effects through putting the drums at the corners of the auditorium (similar to arrangement of the timpani in Berliozs Requiem) and wish to give you a breath-taking opening of the concert. Are you ready?

  • HANDCHIME CHOIR ENSEMBLE, ST. JOSEPHS PRIMARY SCHOOL

St. Josephs Primary Handchime Choir Ensemble consists of 14 boys from P.6. It is newly established by Ms C. Poon, the panel head of music in SJPS, and Mr. K. Y. Choi. The ensemble members play the handchimes and sing simultaneously from memory in the performance. Therefore, they must be able to master the skills of both handchime playing and singing very well. Apart from gaining precious learning experiences in training, we have nurtured our ensemble with a great sense of belonging to the school by playing an active part in school events such as Green and White Day, Family Fun Day and Graduation Ceremony. The Ensemble was also invited to perform at different community events organized by Independent Commission Against Corruption and Community Youth Club. Our student musicians have a strong passion in music and are enthusiastic about presenting melodious tunes to all with their heavenly voices.

  • Overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla Mikhail Glinka

Mikhail Glinka is considered to be the father of modern Russian music. Born into a wealthy family, Glinka left his life as a government bureaucrat in his late twenties to pursue music, studying in Italy and Berlin. In 1834 he was inspired to write his first important work, the opera A Life for the Tsar (1836) and met with immediate popular success, and the director of the Imperial Theater in St. Petersburg suggested Glinka adapt Pushkins epic poem, Ruslan and Ludmilla, as his next opera.

The poem tells of the abduction of Ludmilla by an evil sorcerer, Chernomor, from a party given for Ludmillas three suitors, one of whom is Ruslan. Each suitor rides off to save the girl, encountering a fantastic assortment of witches, hermits, magic castles, enchanted gardens, magic swords, and so forth, rather in the style of the tales of the Arabian Nights. The sorcerer is vanquished in the end by Ruslan, who revives Ludmilla from a trance and wins her hand in marriage.

Glinka agreed to write the opera, but before he could begin Pushkin was killed in a duel. Therefore, Glinka called in other writers to work on it and rewrote some sections himself. The result was a plot that was too grandiose and rambling, and the opera was not as successful as its predecessor. However, Ruslan and Ludmilla was eventually recognized as a stronger work musically than Tsar, and the composer Mily Balakirev produced a complete, uncut staging in Prague in 1867.

The opera is a musicological travelogue, with themes based on Russian, Finnish, Tartar, and Persian music, all brilliantly orchestrated. Folk songs represent Ruslans Russia, while whole-tone harmonies depict the magical world of the sorcerer Chernomor. Glinkas inspiration for the overture was particularly down-to-earth. He attended a wedding dinner

  • at the Russian court, and later wrote: I was up in the balcony, and the clattering of knives, forks and plates made such an impression on me that I had the idea to imitate them in the prelude to Ruslan. I later did so, with fair success. The overture consists of two main themes, the first driving and rhythmic (one hopes the servants at the dinner Glinka attended werent really hustling at this speed!), the second more lyrical and reminiscent of courtly dances.

  • Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K622 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

    I. AllegroBeing one of the finest composers in the Classical period, Mozart developed his unique artistic language out of formalism in musical forms. In December 1774, the composer was admitted into a Viennese Masonic lodge, where he met Anton Stadler, a Freemason virtuosic clarinetist. Impressed by the virtuoso, Mozart soon dedicated his Clarinet Quintet K. 581 and eventually this concerto to Stadler.

Written in 1791, Clarinet Concerto K. 622 was Mozarts last purely instrumental work and also his only clarinet concerto. The first movement Allegro is adapted from the composers Basset Horn Concerto in G major K. 621b by inserting a bassoon part. The movement is exceptionally longer than other first movements by the composer. Unlike concertos of the same period, it does not comprise a cadenza and has notably more emphasis on interaction between the solo clarinet and the orchestra. The strings introduce the first theme, followed by imitation all along from the winds. The second theme in E major demonstrates contrasts with the first theme, and with a minor phrase inserted, the second theme peaks by continuous modulation. The movement ends with some rapid semiquavers which require meticulous techniques as well as the finest cooperation between the soloist and the orchestra.

Concerto for Two Violins, Strings and Continuo in D Minor, BWV 1043 Johann Sebastian Bach

    I. VivaceBetween 1717 and 1723, Bach was employed by Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cthen, a music-loving nobleman from an area northeast of Weimar in what used to be called East Germany. (The position was rather similar to the one that Haydn was to hold with the Esterhzy family later on in the century.) When Bach was engaged as Kapellmeister, Leopolds court was boasted as one of the largest and finest orchestras in Europe. Bach composed a considerable amount of instrumental music for the Cthen musicians, including most of his solo concertos.

Bach was very interested in the Italian style of concerto writing,

  • particularly the works of Antonio Vivaldi. He studied Vivaldis music avidly, sometimes copying the scores to develop greater familiarity with the style. It is no surprise that the D Minor Concerto for two violins reflects certain Italian Baroque characteristics.

The three movements adhere to the Vivaldian model of fast-slow-fast tempi. Bach makes extensive use of sequences and contrast between full orchestra (ripieno) and his solo group (concertino, in this case the two violins). The presence of two soloists in the D Minor concerto highlights the contrapuntal intricacy of Bachs texture. Their entrances are frequently canonic; he also makes use of invertible counterpoint, whereby the two voices exchange material, maintaining the integrity of each contrapuntal line.

    Selmo 150 Ernani Aguiar

Born on 30 August 1950 in Petrpolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Ernani Henrique Chaves Aguiar is a composer, choral conductor and musicologist. Aguiar studied under various composers and conductors in South America and later in Europe, including Sergiu Celibidache. As a musicologist, he has specialized in the revising, editing, and revival of works by composers of the 18th century Minas Gerais School. He has written a number of instrumental pieces, but his most famous works are his choral pieces, such as the fiery Salmo 150 (1993), which features rhythmic backgrounds with very rapid articulations. Salmo 150 has proved a very popular piece among choral conductors worldwide, particularly within the American Choral Directors Association.

Salmo 150 acquires text from psalm 150, a common setting for sacred choral works. The music starts with a grandiose statement formed by dotted rhythms from various voice parts. The soprano, supported by alto, then introduces the melody, returning to the intriguing dotted rhythm shortly afterwards. The melody is sung alternately between different voice parts, and between each section of the melody the episode of unison dotted rhythm is inserted. In the middle of the piece, the music undergoes a brief modulation, returning to its original key after a crescendo build-up.

Coming to its conclusion, a rapid chant is sung by the soprano and alto, followed by a stylish end of Alleluia.

  • March from Peter and the Wolf Sergei Prokofiev arr. Chris Brook

Composed in 1936 in the Soviet Union, Peter and the Wolf is arguably Prokofievs most famous work, earning the Russian composer, pianist and conductor fame as one of the major composers in the 20th century. It is composed for a narrator and an orchestra. The plot starts with the young Peter being left alone by his grandfather, and encountered a big, grey wolf which emerged from the forest and swallowed Peters duck. Peter then tried to get rid of the wolf and struggled hard with it. Soon, hunters arrived and with their help, Peter took the wolf to the zoo.

March is an excerpt from the piece arranged by Chris Hooks for percussion band. The bells and xylophones imitate the horns and trumpets while the marimba imitates the strings in the original orchestration.

The piece is played in allegro, introduced by dotted patterns by the timpani. Then come the playful ascending arpeggios and scalic notes played by the bells and xylophones, accompanied by the marimba and the snare drum, which add strong rhythmic flavor to the piece. The uses of triangle and siren whistles also help to create the playful atmosphere.

The opening melody interwinds between major and minor keys. The snare drum re-enters, heavily accented in its semiquaver rhythms. The piece progresses with echoes of quick impulsive notes from the timpani and the snare drum. Finally, the opening melody recapitulates and ends the piece with rhythmic embellishment.

  • Irish Friendship Wish Ruth Elaine Schram

Ruth Elaine Schram began piano and theory lessons at the age of five. She studied music at Lancaster Bible College and Millersville State College and taught Elementary Music in Pennsylvania for several years, and began her songwriting at the age of 12. Her first octavo was published in 1988. In 1992, she became a full-time composer and arranger and now has over 2,000 published works. Over seventeen million copies of her songs have been sold, and she has been a recipient of the ASCAP Special Award each year since 1990. Her songs have also appeared on television shows such as "The 700 Club" and HBO's acclaimed series "The Sopranos."

The song is composed to a traditional Irish text An Irish Friendship Wish. Composing songs to traditional texts is not uncommon; some famous works of this genre include For the beauty of the Earth, Amazing Grace and various hymns.

The song begins with chords from the keyboard, supplementing clarity to the overall atmosphere, the gentle melody then joins, mostly repeating the same rhythmic structure. Sequences are heavily used in the song, most prominently at the end of the chorus, where two musical phrases are similar in terms of rhythmic structure, yet differ in terms of pitch, with one in a lower pitch than the other.

    Lyrics:

May there always be work for your hands to do.May your purse always hold a coin or two.May the sun always shine on your window-pane.May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.

May the hand of a friend always be near you,May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.Keep this wish safe in your heart,Even though we may be apart.

Sing this song, and it will remind youSomeone sends you this friendship wish.

Recognizing a need for choral music written especially for student singers and volunteer church choirs, Mr. Besig began composing for his own choral groups. Over 350 of his original compositions and arrangements have been released by leading publishers of school and church music. More than 15 million copies of his works have been sold. He is the recipient of several ASCAP Special Awards in the category of standard music.

Flying Free begins with an intriguing flute solo, bringing about a sense of serenity amidst the busy broken chords provided by the accompaniment. The lyrical melody enters, supported by scalic accompaniment from Soprano, which then undergoes a modulation into a new section, until finally the first part appears again, concluding the first section. The melody is then repeated, changing the accompaniment provided vocal parts from pure whole notes, to intertwining with the main melody. The music, afterwards, slowly evolves to a new section in which the broken chords from the instrumental accompaniment are altered into chordal statements, with call and answer between voice parts for ornamental purposes, and finally ending with melismatic vowels from the choir, conjuring beautiful chords and harmonies in the process.

    Lyrics:

Like the bird above the treesGliding gently on the breezeI wish that all my life Id beWithout a care and Flying Free.

But life is not a distant skyWithout a cloud, without rainAnd I can never hope that ICan travel on without pain

Time goes swiftly on its wayAll too soon weve lost todayI cannot wait for skies of blueOr dream so long that life is through.

So lifes a song I must singA gift of love I must shareAnd when I see the joy it bringsMy spirits soar through the air.

Like that bird up in the skyLife has taught me how to flyFor now I know what I can beAnd now my heart is Flying Free!

Happy Birthday Variations Mildred J Hill

Mildred J Hill was an American songwritter and musicologist and is the composer of the melody of Happy Birthday to You. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 12, 1996.

Valerie W. Stephenson is an experienced vocal and instrumental teacher. She is active in handbell composing and arranging, and conducting. She is currently serving as Chair for Area VI, AGEHR, Inc.

Happy Birthday Variations is a Medley in the structure of Intro-Rondo-Coda which comprises melodies from Hallelujah (by Handel), Canon in D (by Pachelbel), Lullaby (by Brahams), Symphony no. 5 (by Beethoven), Overture of Barber of Serville (by Rossini), and, most importantly, the melody from Happy Birthday to You. The piece begins with melodies from Hallelujah played in a joyful mood. Then the melody of Happy birthday to You moves in and the Hallelujah melody becomes an accompaniment. Afterwards the melodies of Canon in D, Lullaby, Symphony no. 5 of Beethoven, Barber of Serville move in accordingly. The Happy Birthday to You melody interwinds in the music in both major and minor keys. The piece ends with a coda of a grand recapitulation of the Happy birthday to You with an unresolved dominant seventh chord.

  • Le Carnaval des animaux: Grand Fantaisie Zoologique (The Carnival of the Animals: Grand Zoological Fantasy) Camille Saint-Sans

By the mid-1880s, Camille Saint-Sans was internationally famous as a composer, pianist, and organist. He was also decidedly middle-aged, standing as the established old guard in French music. Saint-Sans was twenty-six when he started teaching piano classes in Paris in Spring 1861. He encouraged his students to compose and to experiment with different styles. His students later recalled that Saint-Sans liked to lighten things up, injecting humor and occasional mockery of the rules into his classroom improvisations. Delighted with what they heard, the students encouraged him to write down these short pieces. Twenty-five years later, some of them probably metamorphosed into Carnival of the Animals.

He kept concertizing in Austria and Bohemia, where reception to his music was more favorable. Nevertheless, the brouhaha in Germany had been upsetting, and Saint-Sans decided to take a rest in a quiet Austrian village. There, in a matter of days, he composed the fourteen movements of Carnival. He had in mind an annual carnival concert during Mardi Gras, presented by Charles-Joseph Lebouc, a cellist friend in Paris. The first performance of Le Carnaval des animaux: Grande Fantaisie Zoologique took place at Leboucs event on 9 March 1886. It was so successful that it got re-run a few days later at the chamber music series La Trompette. Then Franz Liszt, in Paris for a visit, wanted to hear it, so a further performance occurred at the salon of the mezzo-soprano Pauline Viardot-Garcia on 2 April.

At that point Saint-Sans balked. He had intended the piece as a jest; now he was apprehensive that the general public would assume his other music was like Carnival. He withdrew all of it except Le Cygne [The Swan], which he allowed the Russian dancer Mikhail Fokine to choreograph. The balance of the work was suppressed. In a will drafted in 1911, however, Saint-Sans by then 76 years old authorized its posthumous publication. Durand published it three months after the composers death in 1921. Le Cygne was played at Saint-Sanss funeral in Algiers.

For all his reluctance about Carnival, it remains as one of the cleverest parodies in all music. The complete work consists of 14 segments that

  • feature different instruments a sort of French 19th-century Young Persons Guide to the Orchestra. The movements are musical illustrations of various animals, some of which are clearly metaphors for human beings.

Several of the pieces quote Saint-Sanss contemporaries: No.4, Tortoises, presents Offenbachs can-can gallop at Adagio tempo; No.5, Elephant, quotes a French folk song, Berliozs Dance of the Sylphs from The Damnation of Faust, Meyerbeers Les Patineurs, and the Scherzo from Mendelssohns A Midsummer Nights Dream.

No.12, Fossils is an example of Saint-Sans poking fun at his own music. The most recognizable tune he incorporates into this silly hodgepodge (marked ridicolo, or ridiculously) is Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, which is known in French as Ah vous dirai-je maman. Opera fans may catch a fleeting reference to Rosinas aria Una voce poco fa from Rossinis Barber of Seville. Two other popular French folk tunes are quoted, and the composer uses a snatch of a theme from his own orchestral tone poem, Danse Macabre. Fossils uses xylophone to emulate the rattling of bones.

Though Saint-Sans does not quote Rameaus music, he pays tribute to the French Baroque master in No.1 Cocks and Hens, and takes a bow to the budding impressionist movement in No.7, Aquarium. The satire is not restricted to animals or composers. Saint-Sans mocks all students of the keyboard in No.11, Pianists, and pokes fun at Characters with Long Ears in No.8 surely a coded caricature. It is all done with an incomparably light touch and economy of means. Saint-Sanss satirical humor and incisive vignettes have made Carnival of the Animals a classic.

The chamber version calls for flute (doubling piccolo), clarinet, xylophone, glockenspiel, two solo pianos, and a quintet of strings [two violins, viola, cello, and double bass].

  • Ill Paint You a Rainbow Greg Gilpin

Greg Gilpin began piano lessons at age four and while continuing his music studies in the piano, trumpet, French horn, and voice, he became an accomplished accompanist for choirs in school and his familys church. By the time he entered college he had developed a strong knowledge of choral music and had directed a church choir for over four years. His first choral works were published while a senior at Northwest Missouri State University, where he received a degree in Vocal Music Education. Today he is a well-known ASCAP award-winning choral composer and arranger with hundreds of publications to his credit and is a highly respected choral conductor. He performs frequently as a singer with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra as well as with recording artist Sandi Patty. He currently is the director of educational choral publications for Shawnee Press, Inc. and is a member of ACDA, MENC, AFTRA, SAG, and is a Life Loyal Member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.

Ill paint you a rainbow begins with a welcoming piano theme composed of broken chords. After a unison section, the music develops into one of call and answer, still sustained by broken chords provided by the piano. The harmony then thickens continuously, until finally an a capella section is introduced, with a decrease in tempo. Shortly after, the music undergoes modulation, with the voice parts still singing in unison. The music comes to a brief pause when the voice parts sustain the tonic chord, concluding the modulation section. The piano then repeats its theme of broken chords, and the music then returns to its original key and the melody appears again, closing with a rit., and ending the piece.

  • Circle of Life Elton John arr. Fidel Calalang Jr.

Sir Elton Hercules John has a career which spans over 5 decades, selling more than 300 million records during its course, thus making him one of the best-selling music artists in the world. Born in Pinner, Middlesex, he rose to fame after publishing his self-titled album Elton John during the 1970s which reached number four on the US Billboard 200 and number five on the UK Albums Chart. Besides pop music, Sir Elton John also composed musical materials, prominently for Disney in the Lion King, and Aida.

Most of the musical compositions he had written are for Walt Disney, such as, previously mentioned, those in the Lion King and Aida, in both of which productions he assumed the role of composer. Despite the seemingly small portion that it occupies in the whole of Sir Elton Johns compositions, they are nonetheless marvels The Lion King musical adaption and film surpassed the Phantom of the Opera in the terms of financial success, becoming the top-earning title in box-office history for both stage productions and films, and Aida received Tony Award for Best Original Score at the 54th Tony Awards, and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album at the 43rd Grammy Awards.

The Circle of Life, rearranged by Filipino arranger Fidel Calalang Jr, starts with a welcoming chord produced with an unison choir, and moves to an introduction comprised of syncopations, which then slowly progresses to the theme, backed by ostinato provided by bass. The music then undergoes multiple modulations, coming to a bridge of triplets, after which the theme appears once more, in modulated form. The music then proceeds to the coda, composed mainly of quavers and semi-quavers, giving a percussive feeling, and eventually concluding with a chord provided by Soprano and Alto, and a chant-like phrase by Tenor and Bass.

The Lord Bless You and Keep You John Rutter

Born in London, Rutter grew up living over the Globe pub on London's Marylebone Road. He then read music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the choir. He served as director of music at Clare College from 1975 to 1979 and led the choir to international prominence, forming his foundation for the love of Choral music, and thus leading to his being a composer and conductor of mainly choral music, in addition, the creation of this piece.

John Rutter has composed numerous sacred choral works as this one, including the famous For the Beauty of the Earth, All Things Bright and Beautiful, Gloria and Requiem.

The Lord bless you and keep you is a sacred choral composition by John Rutter set in 4 vocal parts (SATB). In the piece, the accompaniment first rests on a pedal point; long chords in the bass change only every half measure, while broken chords in steady eighth notes add colour. The first line of the text is sung by the sopranos alone, then repeated by all voices, starting in unison but expanding to harmony on the words The Lord make His face to shine upon you. The Lord lift His countenance upon you is sung twice in two-part homophony, first soprano and alto, then tenor and bass. And give you peace appears three times, from mp to pp, first in the soprano, then in the tenor, and finally in unison in all voices. A polyphonic Amen grows to the climax

Local ExcursionHong Kong Sinfonietta: Short-cut to Classical Music: Story of the Conductor

  • I am very glad that I can have this opportunity to watch this concert "Short-cut to classical music: story of the conductor". After this concert, I have known more about the history of conductors. Before that, I always thought that the role of the conductor in an orchestra or a choir was not too important and he might be just a person who provided advice for the team. But after that, I have learned how important of a conductor could be. He/she is the one who orders the team. It will be more difficult if a team doesn't include a conductor. "Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor", written by Gustav Mahler, is the piece I love most in this concert. I can feel the beauty of this song. The tempo is slow enough to bring audience into fantasy to feel the composer's

world. So this song has impressed me the most.

The concert was indeed fabulous, showing that we Hong Kongers are as talented as people in other countries. From the concert, the topic of which was about conductors, I have learned that whether there is a leader or not to guide us to finish our work and tasks, teamwork is the key to success. This not only applies to sports and music, but everything. The conductor proved this by letting a few musicians play along without any help from herself. Imagine the whole orchestra of musicians all had played individually with different tempos at the same time, wouldn't it have been a disaster? Among all pieces, which I like all, my favourite was "The Wedding March".

Among all pieces, I love the "West Side Story Overture" most. This piece contains jazz music and a lot of percussion instruments, which made it a highlight of the night. At first, I thought being a conductor was an easy job, just moving his hands according to the music movement. But the introduction by Miss Yip, the music director of the concert, has changed my view towards the special posts of the orchestra and the conductor. Tonight's concert has given me more information about the work of being a conductor and has deepened my understanding of what my music teacher

    usually does.

The "Story of the Conductor" is a magnificent concert to me as it gave me an introduction to the world of conducting. Many famous conductors from around the world were introduced. The programme I enjoyed most is "West Side Story Overture" from Leonard Bernstein. As Mr. Bernstein, who was the conductor of this concert, was Miss Yip Wing Sie's former teacher, she gave an in-depth introduction to Mr. Bernstein, regarding his passion for music. For the overture, the melody and the rhythm of the piece was magical and exciting, which has definitely caught the ears of the spectators. Generally speaking, this concert was a memorable experience for me and I love it very much.

    REFL

    ECTIO

    NS

After watching and listening to the concert "Story of the Conductor", which was held by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, I am going to express my opinion about it. As I know, the conductor, Miss Yip Wing Sie, is an extremely good conductor in HK. I had gone to a concert conducted by her in the past, which I liked so much. Then, since I am also a clarinet player, I love the song "Concertino for Clarinet & Orchestra in E flat, Op 26". The solo player, Miss Fong Hiu Kai, played the melody well and I would like to try to play this song when I can play my clarinet better. Finally, I think I have to pay much more effort into practising my clarinet, so that I can play in the Hong Kong Sinfonietta with the

best instrument players in Hong Kong.

The concert "Short-cut to Classical Music: Story of the Conductor" was organised by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, which aims to encourage more people to learn about classical music through introducing the job of a conductor and explaining the importance of the conductor of an orchestra. Throughout the whole concert, my favorite piece was "The Wedding March" by Mendelssohn. The piece was frequently heard by many of us in many circumstances, mainly during weddings. However, in this concert, the interaction between the orchestra and the conductor, Miss Yip Wing Sie, gave life to the piece and successfully showed to the audience the important role of a conductor during a concert.
