A recording solution that in a single sys-tem captures - and synchronously replays - analogue/digital audio, VoIP, DVI and VGA screen images, composite CCTV, IP-Cameras, LAN radars, asynchronous and synchronous serial radars and other serial data, will assist investigatory work as well as search and rescue operations.

It will also be of huge benefit to air traffic controllers, supervisors and management for training and quality improvement pur-poses.

Its modular structure makes Ricochet fully scalable, which means that it can be ex-panded easily to meet changes in a client’s requirements.

Ricochet’s technology gives you the most important investigation tool when recon-struction of an incident is imperative: The possibility to recreate the TOTAL PICTURE.

RECORDING

AUDIORecording and replaying of audio is the most important element in an investiga-tion. Audio can be the radio communica-tion with the aircraft, communication with the rest of the airport center or ambient recording which records the background noise at the ATC premise.

The system supports all different audio for-mats; analogue, digital and VoIP (including ED-137(B), without limitation in number of channels.

RADARThere are several different radar-data formats used worldwide. Some of them are customed by the radar manufacturer, some are defined by national CAAs and some are international standards. Ricochet uniquely records ALL dif-ferent radar formats.

Through The Wall (TTW) - Radar RecordingCapturing data TTW means tapping the data from the sensor before processing, and inde-pendent from what is presented to the con-trollers.

The Ricochet Radar Display is the fastest and easiest way to view primary and secondary radar data. The radar/track viewer is integra-ted in the Ricochet Replay Client tool where text based chart and chart object format are supported.

The basic features of the area can be plot-ted and used as background. Tracks are plotted with target ID, featuring functions as range, zoom, pan, select reference and select target(s).

SCREENSRicochet’s screen recording software mirrors all operations, including mouse movements and information displayed for the controllers. It is available for replay immediately after re-cording and is optimized for fast recall.

At The Glass (ATG) Screen RecordingCombining the latest in high performance frame rate converter hardware with smart and efficient software, it is possible to effectively record even the highest resolutions used in ATM - at the frame rates needed - without any loss of picture fidelity and without the need for extreme storage solutions.

The recording is done ATG, which means that the images are recorded from the DVI cable. Screen recording does not replace radar re-cording, it complements it.

To get the complete picture the investigator needs to know:- What was said on the radio channels?

- What was seen on the relevant operator screens?- What was the actual traffic situation?

Replaying a total scenario in Ricochet is easy and quick. All channels in the system, of all types of sources, are available in the replay client. Selecting data is done with a few mouse clicks and the presentation of audio, radar and screens is virtually instant.

CCTVThe Ricochet solution supports recor-ding and replaying of all types of ca-meras; analogue, digital and CoIPs and there are no limitations on number of ca-meras. The camera-recordings can, in ad-dition to be replayed, be exported to an AVI file for replay on an independent PC.

PLAYBACK, ADMINISTRATION AND REPORTS

REPLAYA significant contributor to the success of Ricochet is the Ricochet replay control panel, designed for the ATC market. The in-vestigation and replay process is managed with few operations, and replay of a chan-nel is done by a simple click.

Channels can be replayed simultane-ously and can be directed to separate lo-udspeakers.

Other sources like monitors, cameras and radar feeds are replayed synchronously. All clients receive the most flexible and user-friendly interface for replay.

DATA IMPOUNDRicochet Impound software offers advan-ced security technology for extraction and export of data. The process of impounding data is automated and the client tool guid-es the user in selecting and extracting rele-vant data for further analysis.

The extracted data can be copied to a sui-table removable media, i.e. a memory stick, and handed over to the investigators.

The solution includes a tool to verify that the data has not been tampered with, and an Impound Player, protected by a USB lock.

EXPORTIf data needs to be distributed, the solution offers easy export of chosen audio and vi-deo channel/period to a single file. This file is available for distribution through mail or other sources like CD or USB-stick, and can be replayed by a simple Media Player.

OPEN REPLAY APIThe communication between the Ricochet replay client and the replay server is de-fined by the Ricochet replay API. This is a simple, but effective TCP communication protocol that is fully documented and com-pletely open for anyone to use.

Therefore VCCS, ATM, VTMIS or other vendors can create more or less elaborate replay clients into their software applica-tions, using exactly the same mechanisms as Ricochet uses. Several vendors have successfully done this.

ADMINISTRATIONAdministration of users and user groups is easy with Ricochet’s technology. Access to functions and replay of channels can be gi-ven to user groups and individual users. It is possible to grant access to replaying only selected channels.

CHANNEL TRAFFIC STATISTICSChannel statistics are logged and can be viewed graphically. Plots are available, showing all channels in a channel group or detailed view of individual channels.

AUDIT TRAILActions performed by users are logged. They can be viewed by a user having access to the Audit Trail part of the administration tool. Logged data are user name, Ricochet application or service, time and type of ac-tion performed. Reports can be exported to MS Excel compatible files.

ALARMSThe system features a comprehensive mo-nitoring and alarm system. All processes report to an alarm manager, which monitors heartbeats, warnings and alarms. Coupled with watchdog outputs on critical alarms, to buzzers or dry contact relay, a supervisor can be immediately notified of any abnor-mality.

An SNMP MIB for Ricochet is also available, for use with 3rd party monitoring tools.

REMOTE SYSTEM MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

The modular system architecture makes it easy to create and maintain a large, distri-buted system of Ricochet recording units, where airports can be remotely configu-red, monitored and administered from a workstation through centralized manage-ment.

This means that the Ricochet client ap-plication provides system-wide access to replay and administration via one access point.

Channels recorded on different recorders are presented seamlessly to the user.

No knowledge of the underlying system configuration is needed to access any channel for replay. This also applies to ad-ministration.

TIME SYNCHRONIZATION

Ricochet supports a variety of time sour-ces. The software features mechanisms for supervising the continuous time syn-chronization between all computers in the system. A Ricochet recorder can interface a NMEA based GPS receiver directly and even be a time server, or connect over Eth-ernet or serial line to other sources, such as NTP, IRIG-B, Warton.
