Would you believe that the date of Easter is related to the full Moon? Specifically, Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the paschal full Moon on or just after the vernal equinox. For simplicity, the equinox is considered to be March 21 (a fixed spring date set by the Church), although in astronomy, it’s not always that day. The paschal full Moon always falls on the 14 th day of a lunar month,; because ancient calculations (made in AD 325) did not take into account certain lunar motions, it may differ from the actual full Moon date by a day or so. Easter Fun FactsWhat is Easter Sunday? Easter is the most important holiday on the Christian calendar – and has been regularly observed from the earliest days of the Church.

Easter Sunday celebrates Christ’s resurrection from the dead, following crucifixion. It marks the end of Holy Week, the end of Lent, and the last day of the Easter Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday), as well as the beginning of the Easter season of the liturgical year.

The resurrection represents the triumph of good over evil, sin, death, and the physical body.

When is Easter Sunday? Easter is a “movable feast” and does not have a fixed date; however, it is always on a Sunday.

How is the date of Easter determined? Would you believe that the date of Easter is related to the full Moon? Specifically, Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the paschal full Moon on or just after the vernal equinox.

For simplicity, the equinox is considered to be March 21 (a fixed

spring date set by the Church), although in astronomy, it’s not always that day. The paschal full Moon always falls on the 14th day of a lunar month,; because ancient calculations (made in AD 325) did not take into account certain lunar motions, it may differ from the actual full Moon date by a day or so.

Easter always fall on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25.

What folklore is associated with Easter? Eggs, traditionally forbidden during Lent, symbolize new life.

The Easter Bunny recalls the hare, the Egyptian symbol of fertility.

Where did the word “Easter” come from? The origin of the word “Easter” is unclear.

It may have derived its name from the Anglo-Saxon dawn goddess Eostre, whose feast was celebrated each spring at about this time.

Or, it may have derived from words meaning “rising”, “dawn”, or “east”.

Each year, Major League Baseball honors Jackie Robinson by celebrating April 15 as Jackie Robinson Day. Back in 1947, April 15 was opening day, and young Jackie Robinson made his debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Robinson went an unmemorable 0–3, only reaching base on a throwing error, yet he made history as the first African American to play in the big leagues. His courageous debut ended 80 years of segregation in the game. Less than 10 years later, the percentage of black players on Major League teams matched or exceeded that of the general population. Robinson was not only a Hall-of-Fame player but an American cultural hero. Each year on April 15, players don Robinson’s universally retired number 42 to honor the brave man who broke baseball’s “color line.”

Who is Wilson and what exactly is a warbler? In this case, Wilson is Alexander Wilson, a Scottish mill worker who emigrated to America and eventually authored the nine-volume American Ornithology. Wilson’s warblers are small, chirpy, and very sprite songbirds. Most of their time is spent flitting in the shrubby understory of the forest hunting for insects. Wilson’s warblers are found throughout the United States, especially in the west. Both male and

female Wilson’s warblers are shades of yellow. The males have little black “caps” that look like mini berets on top of their head. Wilson’s warblers nest on the ground, in bushes, or in small trees, laying about five eggs annually. In 2014, a study tracked the migration patterns of Wilson’s warblers. It was discovered that DNA extracted from feathers predicted their migration routes. Scientists hope to replicate this study with other species.

Get Things RollingOn Monday, April 22, Americans will enjoy an annual Easter tradition by rolling Easter eggs on the South Lawn of the White House. The Easter egg roll is one of the White House’s oldest annual events. While informal egg-rolling parties may have been held at the White House as far back as Abraham Lincoln’s administration, it was Dolley Madison who first suggested a public egg roll, not at the White House but at the U.S Capitol in 1872. Landscaping concerns led Congress to ban the practice in 1878, but legend has it that angry citizens stormed the White House gates and

demanded that children be allowed to roll their eggs. President Rutherford B. Hayes had little choice but to open the South Lawn of the White House, and the event has taken place there ever since. The celebration has evolved over the years. In 1933, Eleanor Roosevelt greeted rollers over a national radio broadcast, and in 1974, the egg-rolling race was initiated, with contestants using spoons from the White House kitchen. While the event has been canceled due to inclement weather or even in times of war, Americans know that come Easter Monday, eggs will roll.

An Easter Prayer Poem

God, give us eyes to seethe beauty of the Spring,And to behold Your majestyin every living thing –And may we see in lacy leavesand every budding flowerThe Hand that rules the universewith gentleness and power –And may this Easter grandeurthat Spring lavishly imparts

Awaken faded flowers of faithlying dormant in our hearts,And give us ears to hear, dear God,the Springtime song of birdsWith messages more meaningfulthan man’s often empty wordsTelling harried human beingswho are lost in dark despair –‘Be like us and do not worryfor God has you in His care.’
