What Is Pinterest?

o you remember the good old days before computers? D People would cut pictures out of magazines and maybe place them in a notebook or even pin them on a pinboard. Pinterest is an online pinboard that allows users to “pin” pictures and videos of their favorite things in one spot. You can see an example of a Pinterest pinboard below.

Each picture pinned on this board titled “Furniture” represents saved images from different websites. These are called pins. As an example, let’s say you’re shopping for new living room furniture. Instead of bookmarking different website pictures, you can pin them to your Pinterest pinboard as a nice visual way to keep track of all the different websites. Pinterest allows you to create pinboards on different topics. Using the new furniture example, one of your Pinterest boards could be all about sofas. Another could feature coffee tables. Another could include recliners. Get the idea? On top of that, Pinterest users can share their pinned websites with other Pinterest users as well as on their Facebook profile. It’s a great visual way for users to share the products that they love with others.

Pinterest 101: Navigation

Below is an image of the main page of Pinterest after you create a Profile. The most important parts for navigation are in the top left and right corners.

This is the search bar. Here you can search for pictures as well as other Pinterest users. When you find a user that you like, you can click the “Follow” button to subscribe to their pins.

The “Add” button will allow you to add a pin from a URL or file as well as create a pinboard. The “About” dropdown is where you’ll find support information as well as website development tools. In the “Name” drop down you can adjust your profile settings.

Pinterest 101: Pins & Pinboards

When you click the “Add” button at the top right of your screen on Pinterest, you’ll see the box below. Pins are basically pictures. A board is the wall where you’ll post the pictures.

The “Add a Pin” option will allow you to add a picture from a web address. The “Upload a Pin” option will allow you to upload a picture file.

This option allows you to create a new pinboard. Be sure to include it in the appropriate category and include keywords in the pinboard name.

7 Pinterest SEO Best Practices

interest is quickly becoming a powerful SEO tool. PEvery time someone pins a picture from your website onto their Pinterest board, you’re helping to drive website traffic. Here are some best practices to encourage people to pin your website pictures on Pinterest.

1. Post high quality pictures from your website on Pinterest. It’s a great way to encourage people to re-pin website photos.

2. Optimize image file names as “keyword-phrase.jpeg” as opposed to “image12535.jpg.”

3. Include keyword phrases in the character descriptions of the

images that you pin. Pinterest gives you a 500-character limit.

4. Encourage others to follow you and re-pin your images by following people and re-pinning images similar to your photos on Pinterest.

5. Use keywords in your pinboard names. For example, suppose you sell

sporting goods. You would want to have a pinboard titled “Football Equipment” that contains nothing but football equipment pictures from your website.

6. Add the “Pin It” button to your

website. It’s a lot like the Facebook “Like” button. When someone clicks on the button, an image from your website is added to their pinboard. You can download the “Pin It” button at pinterest.com/about/goodies.

7. Use the “Follow” button on your

website. This is another website button that can be found on the Pinterest Goodies page. Adding this button to your website allows people to subscribe to your Pinterest profile.

How to Get More Pinterest Followers

ust like any other social network, the more followers that you Jhave the better you’ll be. So how do you get people to follow you on Pinterest? Follow these tips and you’ll be on your way to increasing your user base.

Tap into Other Social Networks If you’re on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn, let your followers know about your Pinterest profile. Give them reasons to follow you (contests, exclusive product pictures, etc.).

Add Value Don’t just randomly post pictures of things. Provide ideas that will inspire people to follow you and share your pins with others. You really want to use eye-grabbing photos.

Follow Influencers You need to follow influencers on Pinterest. These are people with lots of followers. They also get lots of re-pins. Using a tool like PinPuff (see page 12) can help you find influencers.

Use Hashtags (#) Hashtags are a way to get found by people searching Pinterest. In your pin descriptions, use hashtags like #decoratingideas or #Ford. It’s an easy way to get found.

Host a Contest Ask people to create their dream kitchen on a pinboard. The person with the best design wins. Ask people to use a hashtag with pins to track results. For example, use #contest.

Engage!!! Like other social media channels, Pinterest is not a one-way conversation. It’s a place where people can share ideas and discuss products and other things that they like.
