Help Wanted for Haiti Ministry: Five years ago we had to do a good amount of repair work to the school in Carissade. We are once again faced with a similar situation and are wondering if the repairs were done appropriately last time. The tin roof is falling off, the rafters are rotten and the foundation is being worn away by runoff. IF you have expertise with these issues and you are available to advise and possibly take a trip to Haiti to teach folks we would love to hear from you. We also need help populating our sub-groups working on fund raising and communica-tions (including keeping our website up to date). We are also looking for folks to participate in a delegation late fall or early winter. If interested contact Paul Amrhein [email protected] or 525-7902

Last week we provided some books for summer spiritual enrichment. For those of you who prefer other media, below are two websites for spiritual nourishment:

The Henri Nouwen Society http://www.henrinouwen.org/ Subscribe to Daily Meditations, join a summer book discussion, listen to video clips and more Creighton University has an entire online ministry! On their site you will find daily medita-tions, assistance praying with the Sunday Scriptures and even an online retreat for praying with Alzheimer’s. Have someone who prays in a language other than English near you? This site has multiple languages offered also! http://onlineministries.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/online.html

The Saint Bridget Liturgy Committee is reading and reflecting together on Fr. Robert Barron’s book Eucharist as part of each monthly meeting. They are enjoying the intellectual and spiritual enrichment that is part of this practice and invite you to share in some excerpts from the book, so that you might join them in going more deeply into the mystery of Christ’s real presence.

From Chapter One: “Love, in the theological sense, is not a feeling or sentiment, though it is often accompanied by those psychological states. In its essence, love is an act of the will, more precisely, the willing of the good of the other. To love is really to want what is good for someone else and then to act on that desire. Many of us are kind, generous, or just, but only so that someone else might return the favor and be kind, generous, or just to us. This is indirect egotism rather than love. Real love is an ecstatic act, a leaping outside of the narrow confines of my needs and desires, and an embrace of other’s good for the other’s sake. … In light of this understanding, we can now see that God’s creation of the world is a supreme act of love. God, it is true, has not need of anything outside of himself; therefore, the very existence of the universe is proof that is has been loved into being, that is to say, desired utterly for its own sake.” (p. 28)

As you reflect on this excerpt, ponder the times in your life that love has been an act of will, and totally centered on the good of another. Imagine now: what if this is how every Christian behaved, all day every day? What would celebrations of the Eucharist be like if everyone gathered with the intention of making sure everyone else’s experience of the celebra-tion was as powerful and fruitful as possible; that is, all gathered in love?

Going on Summer Vacation? Consider using E-Giving to make your contributions to the parish. Many of our parish families are planning to get away for some summer fun and relaxation. We pray that your vacation time will be safe and a source of many happy memories. Offertory collections de-crease significantly during the summer months. Keep up with your stewardship pledge even when you are away! E-Giving offers convenience in making recurring donations to the parish. To make a contribution or sign up for E-Giving go to our website www.saintbridgetchurch.org. You may use debit cards, credit cards or electronic funds transfer for your contributions. E-Giving provides a secure and convenient option to fulfill your stewardship pledge and make donations to the various funds and special collections. Contact Kimber-ly Lapkin at 525-7888 or [email protected] with any questions about E-Giving.

Statement by Bishop Paul S. Loverde and Bishop Fran-cis X. DiLorenzo on Supreme Court Marriage Decision

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution requires states to issue marriage licenses to two persons of the same sex, and requires a state to recognize as marriage the union of two people of the same sex when it was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-state. We are deeply distressed by this decision which fails to uphold marriage as the union which unites one man and one woman. This fundamental institution, grounded in natural law, predates any religion or nation.

All persons have inviolable dignity and deserve love and re-spect. Unjust discrimination is always wrong. However, our commitment to marriage is a matter of justice and fidelity to our Creator’s original design. Marriage is the only institution uniting one man and one woman with each other and with any child who comes from their union. Redefining marriage furthers no one’s rights, least of all those of children.

As Bishops, we believe it is more vital than ever that we share the Church’s consistent witness to the truth about marriage, and we call on Catholics and those concerned for the common good to continue to pray, live and speak out with charity about the true nature of marriage. The truth cannot be marginalized.

We will join with our brother bishops from across the country when we shortly share an additional statement from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which will provide further analysis.

Human Concerns Announcements

Praised Be – Teachings From the Pope: Pope Francis’s long-awaited encyclical on ecology was released on June 18. The title of the encyclical is Laudato Sii, and the subtitle Sulla cura della casa comune. Laudato Sii is translated as Praised be, and is a hallmark line from St. Francis’ Canti-cle of the Creatures. Sulla cura della casa comune is translated as On the care of the common home. Papal teachings can be challenging for us and this encyclical is likely to have much hype on every side of the political spectrum. But these teachings are not meant to be solely political but meant to provide the theological and moral imperative for action in part to overcome political iner-tia but more importantly move us in our conversion process. Put the encyclical on your summer reading list. You can read it online at - http://w2.vatican.va/content/vatican/en.html

There is an urgent need to develop policies so that, in the next few years, the emission of carbon dioxide and other highly polluting gases can be drastically reduced, for example, substituting for fossil fuels and developing sources of renewable energy. Praised Be – Pope Francis

Help Wanted – For Prayer Services for the Elderly at Westport: A number of Catholics at the Westport health care facility at 7300 Forest Avenue are being served by a team of St. Bridget parishioners and can use your help. They have a communion service each Sunday at 2:30. With enough volunteers you would be helping at one prayer service every six weeks or so. Your small sacrifice makes a huge difference in the lives of those that come to the prayer service and you may find it just as rewarding. We have a number of individuals and couples who do this ministry togeth-er. If interested contact Paul Amrhein [email protected] or 525-7902

Habitat Faith Build Barbeque - Sunday, July 12th, 2015 at 1229 N. 29th Street, Richmond, VA 23223, 5-7pm (rain location is Good Sheppard Baptist Church, 1127 N. 28th Street, Richmond, VA 23223) There will be a short program including blessing of the build site at 5:30. Habitat will pro-vide the main dish and drinks; First Baptist will provide a cake; and we ask guests to bring sides. Come out and meet your fellow builders and the families whose homes we will be building. For a better count of attendees and food preparation, we ask that people RSVP by Wed, July 8th, to Paul Amrhein [email protected] or 525-7902

St. Bridget Partnering With Habitat & Other Area Congregations - We are enthusiastic about starting this new faith build project. We will have 3 build days to ourselves and they are: Sep-tember 12th – framing, October 10th – dry wall hang, November 7th – Painting. You are invited to participate. The Faith Build home will be located at 1227 North 29th Street in Richmond, Virginia. Let me know if you want to volunteer and which date is good for you – Paul Amrhein [email protected] or 525-7902. Once I have filled all our volunteer slots I will put po-tential volunteers on a replacement list in the event someone can’t make it. Put the date on your calendar and sign up early please.

Debunking Some of the Myths Surrounding the Homeless: Homelessness is typically related to mental illness. As we work with CARITAS and other programs with the homeless it is good to know whether what we hear is true or not. Serious mental illnesses are more prevalent among the homeless: about one in four sheltered homeless people suffered from a severe mental illness in 2010, compared to 5 percent of US adults, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). But city officials cited lack of affordable housing, un-employment, and poverty as the top three causes of homelessness in a 2014 survey from the US Conference of Mayors.

Fair Trade Coffee, Tea and Chocolate Sales. The weekend of July 25/26 we will be offering an assortment of coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and chocolate bars. Stop by in the commons after Mass to see the wide assortment being offered. We will have yummy recipes available for iced coffee and tea. Your purchase helps to give an education to children in Carissade, Haiti who would not otherwise have one while helping the farmers in third world countries make a better living. You pay a little more but the coffee, tea and chocolate are fantastic. It is as if you can taste the good you are helping to provide.

Haiti Ministry Meeting. The joint Haiti Ministry of St. Bridget and Sacred Heart meets the fourth Monday of each month, July 27, at 7 pm in the PCMR. We are starting a new structure for our meetings in that we will keep our business meetings to once a quarter and focus on formation during the two meetings in between. Our focus this month will be Catholic Social Teaching. This work makes the ministry possible so please help. Come meet with parishioners of both parishes that chose to walk in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Haiti and plan the ministry’s next steps. God richly blesses our efforts.

Do you know someone who is homebound or has a prolonged illness? Perhaps you have a member of your family who is in a long term care facility or homebound. Please let us know if they would like a BeFriender Minister and/or someone to bring them communion. Our faith calls us to love one another. We have ministers ready to bring the care and concern of our faith commu-nity to your loved one. Call Paul Amrhein at 525-7902 or [email protected]

Thank you. For you support of the Human Concerns ministries in last week’s second collection. Your generosity helps us to respond to parishioners and other members of our community in finan-cial crisis.
