I hope everyone had a great holiday and is refreshed for the term ahead. As I walked into classrooms last week It was great to see the students engaged in their learning and settling into Term 3. We have had approximately 20 new students enrol in our school at the beginning of this term. Welcome to all of these students and their families. I hope you find your transition into our school a smooth one. Our mid-year reporting process is now complete. I hope that your Parent/ Teacher Conferences informed you of your child's achievements in semester one and what they need to do to further improve in semester two. This week, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday our Grade 4 students will be attending Campaspe Downs Camp. Camps are a great opportunity for students to develop independence, lifeskills, teamwork, friendships and to further build relationships with their teachers. Our Grade 6 students are looking forward to attending their camp in Queenscliff in Week 7. This term is particularly exciting as we prepare for our School Concert, 'Locked in the Library', which promises to be a great production! The concert will run over two nights on Wednesday 20th September and Thursday 21st September. Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered to assist with costumes and stage sets. We couldn't do it without you! Notes with further details, including ticket arrangements will be sent out shortly. 2017 PARENT OPINION SURVEY Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents at each school. It is designed to assist our school in gaining an understanding of parents’ perception of school climate, student engagement and relationships with our parent community. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. This year the survey will be conducted online by ORIMA Research Pty Ltd and only takes 15 minutes to complete. The survey can be accessed via desktop computer, laptop, tablet or mobile at any convenient time within the fieldwork period from Monday 7th August to Sunday 27th August. Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the survey are anonymous. The online survey is available in English, Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (Hakha) and Hindi. Survey language guides will be provided in a range of languages including Albanian, Bengali, Burmese, Cantonese, Dari, Filipino, Greek, Gujarati, Indonesian, Japanese, Karen, Khmer, Korean, Macedonian, Malayalam, Pashto, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Sinhalese, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Tamil, Telugu, Turkish or Urdu. Selected parents who do not have internet access or are unable to complete the survey online using their own devices will be provided with computer access at the school. Selected parents will receive detailed information shortly and will have until 27th August to complete the survey. The survey results will be reported back to our school at the end of September. What's coming up:
Principal’s Corner:
New Staff We recently said goodbye to Ms Petrovski and Mrs. Crivelli, who commenced their Maternity Leave. This week we will be saying goodbye to Mrs. Rositto, who will also be commencing Maternity Leave. We wish them all the best as they await the arrival of their babies. To replace these staff members we welcome the following teachers to our school: Louise Atkinson who is replacing Mrs Crivelli in Grade 4D, 3 days per week, Erika Logan who is replacing Ms Petrovski as Art Specialist 2 days per week and Sarah Baulch, who is replacing Mrs Rositto in Grade 1E. We have also appointed a front office receptionist, Martine Uren for 3 days per week. Please say hello to her and make her welcome when you next visit the office. Wishing you all an enjoyable and productive Term 3. Regards, Chris Bozikas –Principal
How many days of school did your child miss in the first half of the year?
There is a direct link between school attendance and achievement in later life. EVERY DAY COUNTS! Please contact your child’s classroom teacher or Susan, Student Wellbeing Officer for further information or for assistance with getting your child to school.
0-6 days: This is within normal range. A child with this attendance rate is able to take full ad-vantage of the teaching and learning opportunities available to them.
7-10 days: This attendance rate is below average. A child with this attendance rate could miss over one year of schooling between prep and Year 10.
11-20 days: This is a poor attendance rate. A child missing this many days could miss out on up to 2 years of schooling between Prep and Year 10.
20+ days: A child missing this many days could miss over two and a half years of schooling between Prep and Year 10. This is very concerning.

QUICK TIPS Dr. Patricia Vlahek
School Life - Managing back and neck pain IPAD OR IPHONE USE
Lean the iPad on a cushion so that’s its tilting upwards and sitting higher. Ask your children to use the
IPAD OR IPHONE while sitting at a table. This is the best way to keep their backs straighter than curving
into a “C” while on the couch, or bending their knees right up for hours looking down at a screen.
CARRYING HEAVY BAGS
Both handles of a back pack should be used, tighten the straps to ensure the bag itself sits in their midback.
The bag should not sag down to the lower back area, this causes too much strain. It is best if the
torso or middle body carries the main weight.
If there is a need to carry heavy books, balance out the weight in the back pack with carrying some items
in the arms close to their chest. By distributing weight across both back and front its easier to carry the
load and less straining on their bodies.
Lap top bags should be carried on a longer strap across the bodies and children should change sides a few
times if they are walking to or from school or for longer walks.
LAPTOP USE AT HOME
Attach a keyboard to the laptop and use the laptop as a screen. In effect, try to design a desktop
arrangement at home. This means lift the lap top up onto a small box or a few books so the screen is at
eye level they avoid looking down too!
USE A MOUSE NOT THE LAPTOP TOUCH PAD
When using the touch pad on a laptop or iPad, the in our arms muscles are always active and so they
fatigue and problems slowly begin due to their overuse. This can lead to shoulder and lower neck pain, so
the best thing to do is use a mouse when at home.
Avoid your children reaching out for the mouse by creating a physical barrier around the mouse with a
stapler, book or whatever objects are available. That way the they will be forced to lift the mouse up and
bring it back to a better position every time it hits the barrier.
READING IN BED
Lying on their side with the book leaning on a pillow next to them is the best way to read in bed. Changing
sides regularly helps to give arms a rest too. Do not prop the pillow up to read while lying on their back.
The angle of the neck looking down strains the mid-back muscles and encourages a bad posture.
Children shouldn’t have pain, they are too young and flexible to do so. If they are complaining of pain, get
it checked out via your GP or contact our clinic for advice via a personal consultation with one of our
experienced osteopaths.
