Taking Risks We all know what it is like to attempt to do something for the first time. Attempting

an activity that is new to us is often followed by making some initial mistakes before

we become accustomed to the task we are performing. Think of the first time we

learned to roller skate or ride a bike - it would be unusual to find someone who

didn’t fall at least once while trying to master one of these activities!

For our students, school often provides the same challenges, as students are

regularly being asked to learn/perform concepts or activities that are new to

them. This not only involves the chance that they may get what they are doing

wrong (at least to begin with), but also provides a situation where there are many

classmates around to witness these errors taking place. As a result, trying to learn

new things at school is viewed by many students as a risky proposition.

In the You Can Do It program, Risk Taking is defined as “thinking that it’s good to try

something new even though I might not be able to do it”. It is important that we

encourage our students to take risks as this is the way they will be able to learn new

concepts and activities that will further advance their education. It is also important

to point out that we all make mistakes when learning to do new things, so there is no

shame in not getting something completely right the first time it is attempted. In

fact, students should expect and accept that they probably will make an initial

mistake and this is alright (and even normal)! In addition, if a student is finding a

new task difficult to achieve the first time, they can be sure that other students

around them are experiencing the same difficulties.

The most successful people and teams in the world became what they are because

they had the courage to take a risk and accept any mistakes that came along with

it. Let’s all encourage our students to follow the same path and be risk

takers. Together, we can do it!

Dear parents,

As you know our fundraiser this year is a Cadbury chocolate drive.

We would like to remind you to return your money and/or unsold

chocolates to the school by Friday 26th May.

We thank you for your continuous support.

Kind regards,

Roxburgh Park Parents and Friends.

Wow word of the week

Are you the WOW word of the Week Champion?

Every week in the newsletter there will be an interesting or unusual wow word

written with its meaning from the dictionary.

Can you put that word in an amazing sentence? If so, write it on a piece of paper,

include your name and grade and pop it in

the box in the office. If your sentence is the most impressive, then you will

feature on our WOW writer champion board displayed in the foyer of the office.

Winner announced each week at assembly.

Happy writing! Lisa EL

LAST WEEK’S Wow WINNER

The ancient, tattered Western saddle groaned as old chips of leather

fell like droplets of rain. Lani heaved it onto the gleaming buckskin

pony who nickered in reply. Lani took a deep breath. This was it. What

she had been waiting for her whole life.

BED TIME!!

In my opinion I strongly believe that kids shouldn't go

to bed whenever they want!

Firstly kids shouldn't go to bed whenever they want

because you have to up so early because you will be

super late for school.

Secondly kids shouldn't go to bed whenever they want

because you will have no energy.

Thirdly kids shouldn't go to bed whenever they want

because you will get extremely sleepy.

Finally kids shouldn't go to bed whenever they want,

how could you not agree?
