I hope everyone enjoyed their weekend and the burst of warmer weather. The past 2 weeks have been quite eventful. Our students celebrated Health and Physical Education Week through a variety of physical activities including our student vs teacher games which were very competitive and exciting. Thank you to the many families who attended our annual Family Maths night making it a great success. It was great to see you all having a go at all the challenging Maths activities which were provided by our teachers. The Grade 4 mixed basketball team participated in the Hooptime Regional Finals and qualified to go on to play in the State Championships at Dandenong in November. We wish them good luck! On Thursday 2nd November, our Grade 2 students will have a school sleepover, followed by a Camp Day, which is part of our school's camping program. For some students, this will be the first time they have slept away from home, preparing them for future camps and teaching them independence. With the Fun Run fast approaching on Friday 10th November, I hope that you are all busy trying to get donations. Our target is $10,000, so encourage your family and friends to donate online. Details have been sent home. For every $10 you raise you will receive a prize. We look forward to a great day! We welcome to our office team, Gail Strahan. She has replaced Vicki Albert who gained a position at a school closer to home. Please make her welcome if you see her in the office. A reminder to families that Monday 6th November is a Pupil Free Curriculum Day. Students are NOT required to attend school on this day. The following day, 7th November, is the Melbourne Cup public holiday. The school will be closed on both these days. Chris Bozikas Principal

You Can Do It! is the whole school social and emotional program at Roxy Rise. The program aims to develop children’s social and emotional skills in five main areas: Confidence, Persistence, Getting Along, Organisation and Resilience. For the remainder of 2017, we will be focussing on developing our students’ resilience. Resilience is the ability to handle tough times – to bounce back, to adapt to change and meet challenges. Research suggests there are 3 major things schools can do to help children build resilience: provide caring and supportive relationships, have high, but achievable expectations and provide opportunities for students to participate in the school community. One of the most useful tools is the Catastrophe Scale (pictured below). It helps kids (and adults!) put things into perspective and control negative thinking. You could try making one at home as a family and help each other refer to it in times of stress. Please contact Susan, Student Wellbeing for further information.

Hello Roxy families!

Well done to everyone who was able to walk or ride to school in October. Tomorrow is your last chance

I hope all our Hub families who made it to Universal Children’s Day at Broadmeadows had lots of fun and

enjoyed the experience.

We’re holding the CUA School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event this year! The event will be held on FRIDAY 10 NOVEMBER. This is a sponsorship based fundraiser, and we’re looking to raise funds to improve our school grounds.

The CUA School Fun-Run is a healthy fundraiser that we hope you’ll support. The event sends the right message to students about having fun while getting involved and being active.

We’re organising a great day for our school community and looking for all students to participate, so we’d love our parents and friends to come down on the day to cheer the students on.

Sponsorship forms which will be sent home with your child this week. Students who raise $10 or more will receive a reward. Also, by jumping online, your family has the chance to win a $30,000 Ultimate Family Experience!

Thanks for supporting your child’s wellbeing and we hope to see you at school for this event.

Commonwealth Bank's Start Smart

Program

We recently welcomed Start Smart to deliver their free, financial education workshops to our Year 1 to grade 6 students. Delivered in class to students by a facilitator, Start Smart changes the way young people learn about money. By making money management interactive, engaging and

fun, our students were equipped with the confidence and competence they need to make smart decisions about money.

Our school has proudly joined the Commonwealth Bank's Start Smart Program in its mission to improve the financial literacy of Australia’s young people. Overall, the program proved to be a highly beneficial experience for students and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. For more information on the program and each of the workshops we encourage you to visit www.startsmart.com.au.
