July 23, 2018 Newsletter No 10.
I hope everyone had a great holiday and is refreshed and ready for the term ahead. Our students have settled into Term 3 well and are engaged in their learning. We have had 11 new stu-dents enrol in our school this term. Welcome to all of these stu-dents and their families. I hope you find your transition into our school a smooth one.
Our mid-year reporting process is now complete. I hope that your Parent/Teacher Conferences informed you of your child's achievements in Semester one and what they need to do to fur-ther improve in Semester two. Please devote time with your chil-dren to continue to support their learning journey at home.
Over the holiday period all of our grade 6 classrooms received new carpets. This is part of our planned maintenance and gives the classrooms a new lease of life. I would like to thank our Grade 1 classes who had to relocate rooms due to the flooding of their classrooms at the end of last term. The teachers and students coped amazingly well with the changes, and I thank them for their resilience and flexibility. It’s great that they are now able to return to the normality and comfort of their own rooms.
You may have also heard that a number of our classrooms have some new furniture. We are trialing a new researched based way of learning – called ‘Flexible Learning Spaces’. It is em-powering for students to understand themselves as learners and have control and responsibil-ity over where they learn. In a flexible environment students build independent learning behav-iours and develop a strong understanding of how best to maximise their learning. At our school, students are given the opportunity to take advantage of both indoor and outdoor learn-ing environments and the spaces enable students to work in a variety of ways and areas. Stu-dents can move around, work at tables, on the floor, in small groups, on stools as well as standing. We will be working with teachers during the trial period to help them to assist stu-dents in building their independence and understanding of themselves as learners.
Last week, our Grade 4 students attended the YMCA Lady Northcote Camp. Camps are a great opportunity for students to develop independence, lifeskills, teamwork, friendships and to further build relationships with their teachers. The students and teachers enjoyed the experi-ence and had a great time. I would like to thank our teachers for all their hard work and time spent away from their own families to make the camp a success.
This week a randomly selected group of parents will be invited to participate in the annual De-partment of Education Parent Opinion Survey. Selected parents will receive information on how to access the survey on line. We encourage all parents selected to complete the survey within the given timeframe, as the feedback you give us is important in ensuring that we continue to improve our school in order to achieve the best possible educational outcomes for your child. Please do not hesitate to ask for assistance from the office if needed.

Attendance How many days of school did your child miss
in the first half of the year?
There is a direct link between
school attendance and achieve-
ment in later life.
EVERY DAY COUNTS!
Please contact your child’s classroom
teacher or Susan, Student Wellbeing for
further information or for assistance with
getting your child to school.
0-6 days: This is within normal range. A child with this attend-ance rate is able to take full advantage of the teach-ing and learning opportunities available to them.
7-10 days: This attendance rate is below average. A child with this attendance rate could miss over one year of schooling between Foundation and Year 10.
11-20 days:
This is a poor attendance rate. A child missing this many days could miss out on up to 2 years of school-ing between Foundation and Year 10.
20+ days: A child missing this many days could miss over two and a half years of schooling between Foundation and Year 10. This is very concerning.

MATHS @ HOME—PARENT TIP SHEET
NUMBER SENSE AND NUMERATION
What’s My Number—Decimal focus Grade 5 and 6
Benefits
Thinking about how a number compares or relates to another number helps us to think about numbers like mathematicians do – flexibly, that is!
Experiences
A number line is a visual tool used to compare numbers. Here’s an example of a number line:
The red arrow pointing down shows the decimal number 3.2 on the number line. Think of a decimal number to use in the game. For example, tell your child, “My decimal
number lies somewhere on this number line. It is greater than 1 and less than 4.” Your child now tries to guess your number by asking questions to which you can give
only a yes or a no response. For example, “Is the number between 2 and 4?” “Is the number greater than 3.5?” Continue until your child guesses the number you have picked and writes your number on the number line where it belongs.
Reverse roles and let your child pick a decimal number and a number line and repeat the process.
