    COMMUNITY

Farewell Open Houses At Closing SchoolsThe District has

announced four Community Farewell Open House dates for each of the elementary schools that are closing at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.

This will be an opportunity for community members, alumni, former staff members or anyone with a connection to these buildings to do a final walk-through of the school, socialize with old friends, celebrate the building’s history and say a proper goodbye.

Each of these Open House dates will feature a brief presentation about the history of the building, speakers, refreshments, a tour of the school and an opportunity to view old memorabilia, historical pictures and more.

These four buildings – which were all constructed in the 1920s and 1930s – are a rich part of our community’s history and we look forward to celebrating all the great memories you may have had with these schools.

The dates for the Community Farewell Open Houses are above. Each open house will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

A Facebook event page has been created for each Open House on the District’s Facebook page. We encourage you to join and share the page with others. Each event page has a discussion thread where community members can share pictures, memorabilia

and memories of the school. If you have artifacts, photos or memorabilia of any of the four schools that you would like to share, please contact the building principal.

NOTE: Each of these buildings will schedule two additional informal walk-through open houses following the dates above for those who cannot make the Community Farewell Open House date. Those dates will be announced at a later time.

Community Kindness DayOn August 7, about 50 Riverside administrators and staff

members volunteered a few hours of their time to give back to the community as part of its annual Community Kindness Day.

Staff members divided into teams and visited local businesses, parks, parking lots, neighborhoods, restaurants and more to hand out candy, school supplies, goodies, certificates, help shoppers with their groceries, pay for lunches and many other random acts of kindness!

This is our small way of showing thanks and appreciation to all the residents in the Riverside community who have been so supportive of the District. Thank you!

Earlier this year, the District received a $20,000 reading and writing grant through the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation to host a Reading Homegrown Institute, provided by the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project out of Columbia University in New York.

Between August 13 and August 16, elementary teachers volunteered their time to attend a four-day professional development at Hale Road Elementary. The training focused on strengthening teachers’ knowledge and understanding of not only the

The Riverside Local School District’s Assistant Superintendent Charles Schlick is the 2018 recipient of the Lake County Educational Service Center’s John J. Weiss Lake County Administrator of the Year Award.

Schlick was presented the award by Lake County Educational Service Center Superintendent Dr. Brian Bontempo and John J. Weiss himself on Monday, August 20, 2018 at Riverside High School during a staff and faculty back-to-school meeting.

Schlick has been with the District since 2001 and has served as an assistant high school principal and head principal at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Since 2008, he has been the District’s Assistant Superintendent.

“I have had the distinct pleasure serving side by side with Chuck as a Central Office Administrator. He displays an unmatchable work ethic as he is the first to arrive and last to leave on any given work day,” said the District’s Superintendent James Kalis. “He is known for his aptitude, patience, communication skills and excellent rapport with others. It’s not a surprise to anyone who knows Chuck that he decided to make his passion of serving others his life’s work.

“Chuck exhibits a passion for education and his conscientious style, energy and enthusiasm in his day to day responsibilities and pursuits have given him the necessary skills to lead our faculty and

and professionalism throughout his interactions,” Kalis added. “His proactive approach to issues should be commended as he has never shied away from making decisions that were in the best interest of our students. His vision and tenacity to get things done have helped the District flourish.”

This award is given annually by the Lake County Educational Service Center (LCESC) to recognize an individual who demonstrates the characteristics of John J. Weiss, a former Riverside teacher and administrator, and the Director of The Lake Academy. Throughout his 47 years in education, Weiss has been highly respected and exemplified excellence in educational leadership.
