Personal Device Scheme

Equipping independent mindsYoung people need ICT skills to support them throughout their lives – whatever they do in education or work. Giving them their own device not only helps students improve their ICT skills, it also gives them access to a wealth of resources. While no-one is suggesting that ICT should replace all other teaching methods, it opens doors to the undreamt-of knowledge resources of the Internet. Having their own personal portal into this powerful learning resource is also a valuable tool for students who are increasingly being taught using an ‘enquiry-based’ approach.

Control the learning environmentBy offering such a scheme schools, Academies, colleges and universities can control which device their students use, ensuring that it is appropriate for their learning environment – and that it will work with the network. This in turn will ensure the device is more useful for the students and far easier to support. The scheme also takes pressure off your existing ICT resources, allowing you to spend less of your budget on Apple equipment.

Benefits of using RM Education• We have experience of working with schools on successful

Apple schemes.• We use a loss pool rather than expensive gap insurance to

protect you financially.• Our leases are compliant with local authority guidelines.• Our leasing is designed with education in mind.• We help the school with parental engagement.

RM Education is breaking new ground with a leasing scheme that lets schools and colleges provide every student with an Apple device, expanding and extending learning outside the school gates.

1 RM Education supplies the devices including iPod and the iPad.

2 The school then offers the use of these devices to students and asks for a donation towards their cost.

3 Parents pay a monthly donation to the school.

4 The school pays for the goods and uses the donations to cover their costs. This is done in two ways.

a. By paying the RM Education invoice in full.

b. By using a lease from RM Rentals to spread the cost and match the rentals to the donations they will receive.

Most institutions use the RM Rental lease, which means that the school can pay the lease rentals at the same rate as they receive the money from parents, matching their cash flow and making the scheme sustainable.

RM Education will help you every step of the way. Our aim is to make sure the scheme succeeds and provides the desired rewards for your school, college or university.

We can do this by:• providing quotes and recommending suitable Apple devices

• providing finance specifically suited to this type of scheme

• providing documents to help you encourage parents to take part - the better the uptake, the more the school will gain from the experience

• passing on the experience of other schools who currently use schemes like this

• giving you a scheme that fits your needs – not a ‘one size fits all’ approach

So how does it work?

RM Education’s role

“Harnessing the power of parental donations to reduce ICT cost and improve teaching and learning”

Benefits to school:

• Allowstheschooltoincreasethenumberofdeviceswithverylittle (if any) funding required.

• CancutfutureICTrefreshcosts, takingpressureoffthemostheavily used ICT resources. New opportunities increase teacher/staff confidence with ICT, allowing the school to get the maximum benefit from using it.

• IncreasespupilaccesstoICT–potentiallygivinga1:1pupil/device ratio.

• Increasesengagementwithparents.

RM Education’s scheme is low risk, simple and hassle-free.

Benefits to parents:

In a world where mobile devices are highly sought-after among young people, this scheme gives access to some of the best equipment, without the stress of having to choose it and at a much lower rate. Other benefits include:

• By choosing a device recommended by the school, parents can be assured that it is suitable for the work that the student is doing.

• Parents will have greater engagement with the school.

• Parental donations do not attract VAT.

• Insurance through an educational institution is much cheaper than you can find as a member of the public.

• Similarly, interestratesfortheleaseschemearelowerthanyou’d get on the high street.

What if the parents don’t pay?Our scheme’s ‘loss pool’ (which accrues a pool of money to cover any missed payments) protects you from incurring extra costs. Using the Tucasi collection service, as described above, makes dealing with non-payment issues straightforward.

Can’t you get the parents to lease direct? The reasons why we lease to the school rather than direct to the parents are:• Credit checks

Many of the students who would benefit most may have parents who would not pass a credit check, excluding them from the scheme.

• Interestrates If parents were to lease direct it would form a ‘Consumer Credit Agreement’, which would attract credit card interest rates. Schools qualify for corporate interest rates which are significantly lower.

• VAT Parents leasing direct would pay VAT, increasing the cost and making the scheme less appealing. Leasing through the school and classing the payments as donations means no VAT. In fact, the school may even be able to claim Gift Aid on the donations*.

Who owns the device in the end?In most cases the scheme will be arranged so that the parent or student takes ownership of the machine at the end. This is also used as a way of encouraging parents to take part in the scheme as they will own the device at the end.

How can we reduce the admin involved in collecting donations and chasing non payers?RM Education can make available a collection service which will help track donations and chase parents who don’t pay.

We can even help schools and colleges claim Gift Aid* on the donations, to help strengthen the scheme. Chasing is done via letter, email or text with documents agreed by you.

*assuming the school has a charity account or the PTA/Friends of the school are a registered charity

Associated products

Because of the way in which these devices will be used (daily by students in school and at home), safeguards need to be put in place to ensure that the device is available for use as much as possible. This is done by taking out a warranty and insurance with the same term as the lease (or for the length of the scheme, if leasing is not included).

Warranty coverAll the Apple warranties are virtual so we provide Apple with your serial numbers who register the warranty for you. In due course, a Proof of Coverage letter confirming cover and relevant details will be sent to you. All AppleCare warranties are held with Apple, not RM. Faulty products should be returned directly to Apple. Customers can extend their warranty upon purchase of the unit with AppleCare.

Insurance coverWe suggest our full theft and accidental damage insurance, which provides worldwide cover 365 days a year with no excess to pay in the event of a claim. The insurer we use works mainly in education so understands the needs of schools and colleges, and treats claims appropriately.

SupportRM Education are proud to be providers of our very own RM Apple support contracts. As part of these contracts, we are able to provide you with a knowledge library, telephone support on working days, online support 24 hours a day, remote diagnostics and discussion forums. Simply choose the most convenient support route for you. We also give you the option as to how long you would like your support cover to last depending on your needs.

Collection serviceRM Education uses a module created by software specialists Tucasi to manage the income coming in from the Personal Device Scheme. It will help your admin team keep track of every payment as it comes in, giving you a superb audit trail. Every payment is posted against a pupil and against the scheme detail – but the system is fully integrated so you only need to enter the data once. Powerful reporting tools mean that you can instantly answer any question that comes to you. Parents have the option to pay by cash or cheque, or they can pay online, thus reducing the amount of cash in school.
