// Expression of Interest for Sessional Teaching in Landscape Architecture RMIT 2015 //

Sessional staff are valued contributors to the delivery of Landscape Architecture at RMIT and play an important role in the development and success of the teaching program. As a sessional teacher you will have; the opportunity to develop and contribute to course delivery access to peer review, career development and mentoring support, access and use of the School’s suite of world-class workshop facilities as well as a range of support mechanisms to build your academic career and design research capacity.

There are sessional teaching roles available for a range of capabilities and levels of experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels for applicants who can demonstrate appropriate levels of capability and contribution.

01 Sessional Course Tutor Roles

Sessional Tutor roles operate as part of a teaching team whereby the Course Coordinator provides the course framework and offers structured support and development for tutors. Sessional Course Tutors are remunerated for scheduled student contact, teaching and assessment. There are optional opportunities in some courses to deliver lectures and undertake additional tasks. These are negotiated individually prior to the commencement of semester.

Sessional Course Tutor Roles are available for Undergraduate Program Core Courses: Environments, Communications, Theoretical Frameworks, Foundation Studio and the Postgraduate Course Professional Practice.

02 Sessional Course Leader Roles

Sessional Course Leaders develop and deliver independent and specialised material based on their expertise and teaching experience. Within this leadership role, sessional staff prepare, structure, administrate and deliver the course material including student assessment. Sessional Course Leaders are remunerated for course preparation (including lectures, tasks, assessments and other administrative tasks), scheduled student contact, teaching, assessment and course reviews.

Sessional Course Leader Roles are available for Design Studio Courses in Undergraduate and Postgraduate areas and for Design Research Seminars in the MLA.

For this role only, applicants with demonstrated prior tertiary teaching experience are invited to apply.

Design Research Studios

These 24-credit point courses underpin the Landscape Architectural program at RMIT. Students commence with Foundation Design Studio (for first year students in semester 1, Sessional Course Tutor roles available - see previous section), and then studios are offered through a vertical studio model where Lower Pool students (from first, second and third year) and Upper Pool students (third and fourth year students) engage in projects which explore a range of modes, methods and techniques of landscape architectural design. The studios require students to demonstrate increasing levels of independence in undertaking and reflecting on their design process. This culminates in the fifth year Masters studio where students undertake a year-long independent research project.

Lower Pool Studios

Lower Pool studios offer students a range of approaches and practices of design which are guided through tasks and clear outcomes. Lower pool studios are characterised by an explicit focus on design techniques and frameworks. Proposals should include a project brief which align design techniques with the intended outcomes.

Courses are offered in semesters 1 and 2 and consist of 6 hours of face-to-face time. There is some flexibility in regards to how this is structured and when classes run (if you have preferred time slots please indicate this in your proposal.)

Upper Pool Studios

The Upper Pool Design Research Studio Stream offers studios for senior undergraduate students as well as postgraduate students undertaking their first year of the coursework Masters.

These are structured to require students to bring a greater level of independence to their individual projects. Studios selected for this pool will offer specialised Landscape Architectural approaches aligned with particular design generation methods. There are a variety of additional studio delivery models offered each semester such as intensive, live project and embedded practice studio models.

Courses are offered in semesters 1 and 2 and consist of 4 hours of face-to-face time. There is some flexibility in regards to how this is structured and when classes run (if you have preferred time slots please indicate this in your proposal.)
