UAT is a private university that fosters the development of passionate technophiles who ethically advance society through the creation and application of next-generation technology. The University’s best-in-class programs are industry relevant and industry driven. UAT’s student body numbers over 800, with students from all 50 states, representing four continents.

UAT students come from a wide variety of locations and backgrounds, but they

all share one thing in common—a passion for technology. Take a walk around

campus and you will see groups of students working together on various

technological innovations, looking to create the “next big thing.” These

interactions will not only challenge students to learn from each other, but

also help build friendships to last a lifetime.

To further interaction and ensure all students achieve their greatest academic

success, UAT has developed a system known as Synchronic Learning. Life outside

college does not work in semesters with summers off. Synchronic Learning reflects

the working world schedule to enable collaborative team projects lasting more than a

semester and encouraging lifelong learning habits needed after graduation.

UAT understands all individuals learn and retain information in different ways.

Acting on this understanding leads to improved academic success and helps ensure

that goals become reality. With Synchronic Learning, all UAT students experience

a variety of teaching methodologies. These methodologies and tools are designed

to engage tech-savvy students and foster each student’s highest learning potential.

Students will learn through lecture, tutorials, group interaction, discovery and

student teachback. Through this process, learning and retention are maximized to

build a foundation that helps UAT students become life-long learners. Students

gain valuable skills for adapting to different environments, mastering effective

communication skills and working efficiently in cooperation with colleagues.

Our Mission: To educate students in advancing technology who innovate for our future.

Speaking not only as the Founder of the University of Advancing Technology, but also as a parent, I am dedicated to ensuring this organization bestows the highest quality education. Students here are nurtured and empowered to capitalize on their passions and to make their own unique dreams a reality.

Dominic Pistillo—Founder and President Emeritus of UAT

UNDERGRADUATE DEGREESUAT students are technologists—this fact lies at the heart of our undergraduate programs. With this in mind, UAT created an academic approach to combine widespread expectations of the undergraduate learning experience with a thinking curriculum and academic programs that urge students to seek an understanding of technology as it relates directly to their chosen discipline. No matter which degree a student pursues, all students receive a deeply focused education in the knowledge, skills, and tools of intellectual inquiry that will aid them as they find their place within the technology community awaiting them when they leave college. Students in UAT’s science-focused degree programs—such as Advancing Computer Science, Network Security, or Technology Forensics—learn scientific theory, process-oriented approaches and logical reasoning. Students in arts-centered degree programs—such as Game Design, Digital Video, or Digital Media—learn aspects of creative development, approaches to abstract and conceptual thought and the application of technical proficiency. Each of these approaches allows students to take away skills to enhance their mastery of their discipline. UAT students culminate their academic experience with the creation of an original Student Innovation Project, a collection of original works compiled into a portfolio, and the real-world experience of an internship.

GRADUATE DEGREESUAT’s Master of Science degrees, like the undergraduate programs, facilitate the practical application of technical knowledge in a specific discipline of advancing technology. These programs provide immersion in an intellectual atmosphere and innovative culture where multidisciplinary minds create and thrive, and where innovation is necessary to every student’s educational goals. Graduate courses are balanced between theory, individual research and practical application to provide a solid foundation of experience for advancement in an evolving field, whether it is Advancing Computer Science, Emerging Technologies, Game Production and Management, Information Assurance or Technology Leadership. By the end of their graduate coursework — culminating in an innovation project rather than the typical thesis — Master of Science candidates will have developed critical evaluation skills enabling them to extend their knowledge into fresh, original areas of inquiry and scholarship.

FACTS“Business is driven by reliance on information technology and network security.”

Why Should Your Student Go Away to College?Understandably, every parent has mixed emotions about their child going

away to college. The college experience marks the beginning of a child’s real

independence and that sometimes takes a while to get used to. Helping your

child ensure they are a great “fit” is one of the biggest roles a parent plays

in the college selection process.

Obviously, there are colleges close to home, so why should your child choose

a school farther away? In the case of UAT, it makes all the difference in the

world. If your child has an undeniable passion for technology, this is the place

for them. Our entire culture focuses on the value of learning and the adventure

of innovating with technology. The “technology” programs at your local colleges

don’t offer the deep technology collaboration and innovative culture uniquely

found only at UAT. Your child might learn what the technology future will look

like at a local college, but at UAT they can learn to create the future with an

outstanding student-to-teacher ratio.

A “tech school” isn’t the answer either. Our experience is that it is a never-ending

uphill battle for vocational or technical school students to achieve the level of

success UAT graduates typically enjoy immediately. Because they have an insight

into the real world of advancing technology when they graduate, UAT graduates

typically are the leaders and innovators, often directing the work of technicians

who have only a training school background.

Fastest growing occupations requiring a Bachelor’s degree—projected to have the largest numerical increase in employment between 2008 and 2018:

At UAT, our focus is on outcomes. We can measure successful outcomes

by the number of graduates we have sent out to become deep thinking

leaders at important companies in the industries we serve. UAT graduates

have an understanding of the world, due in part, to the advantages offered by

a time-honored, well-rounded education. Our esteemed alumni work for leading

technology companies and organizations, such as Microsoft, the National Security

Agency, NASDAQ, Department of Defense, LexisNexis, Electronic Arts, Intel,

Motorola, Neversoft, Dell, Charles Schwab, THQ and Playdom.

A key part of an education at UAT is the graduation requirement to complete a

formal, sophisticated portfolio of work that demonstrates each student’s mastery

of the knowledge and skills in their chosen field. Student Innovation Projects (SIP)

serve as impressive interview support to help them win that job of their dreams after

graduation. It all comes full circle with UAT’s vision to enrich societal advancement

by cultivating thinking innovators for our technology-driven world.

Some of the SIPs that have emerged from UAT students include:

Hello Color: Inter-dimensional Space Checkers (mobile game)

Visual Network Analyzer (threat analysis for computer networks)

FACTS CONT.“With education comes knowledge

and with knowledge comes immeasurable achievement.”

The Field of Technology

Technological advancements will boost the employment of computer-related workers; as a result, the demand for managers to direct these workers also will increase. With the explosive growth of electronic commerce and the capacity of the Internet to create new relationships with customers, the role of computer and information systems managers will continue to evolve. Persons in these jobs will become increasingly vital to their companies. The expansion of the wireless Internet will spur the need for computer and information systems managers with both business savvy and technical proficiency.

– U.S. Department of Labor

Employment in the computer systems design and related services industry is projected to add 671,300 jobs, to reach an employment level of 2.1 million by 2020, making this industry one of the largest growing ones. The computer systems design and related services industry also is expected to be among those with the largest and fastest increases in real output, which is projected to increase by $208.0 billion, to reach $466.5 billion in 2020, an annual growth rate of 6.1 percent. – U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

The computer systems design and related services industry is among the economy’s largest and fastest sources of employment growth. The projected 2004-14 employment increase of 453,000 translates into 1.6 million jobs. Employment of computer and information systems managers is expected to grow between 18 to 26 percent for all occupations through the year 2014.

–United States Department of Labor

U.S. information and communications technology spending will grow 6.6% this year and global IT spending will be up 7.1% to $1.7 Trillion. To win in global innovation ecosystems, U.S. firms need a new breed of multi-disciplinary technologists who can generate, transform, broker and finance the best ideas anywhere in the world.

The North American and European video game market is a huge industry—dominated by global players such as Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft—that draws in consumers from all walks of life. The next few years will see an evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, growth. The U.S. is the largest market for video games, now larger than the market for music and movies combined, at more than $21 Billion.

Business process management suites’ (BPMS) license, services and maintenance revenue from software vendors grew 15% from 2008 to 2009 and now stands at over $2 Billion in revenue, as enterprises seek to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and strategic value of key business processes.

– Forrester Research Inc.

Despite the downturn in the technology sector in the early part of this decade, the outlook for computer and information systems professionals remains strong. Eight out of the 10 highest growth employment fields are currently within the programming, computer and technology fields.

– U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

The beginning salary for many of the jobs in the technology categories ranges to more than $50,000 per year, with employees holding a college degree and having some experience receiving compensation at the higher end of the range. In addition, computer and information systems managers, especially those at higher levels, often receive more employment-related benefits—such as expense accounts, stock option plans, and bonuses—than do non-managerial workers in their organizations.

– U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics

By 2020, employment in all computer occupations is expected to increase by 22%. Demand for software developers will be the strongest in this period, with increases ranging from 28% to 32%, depending on the type of software development.

UAT fosters a unique culture and atmosphere that ensures a wide range of choices for academic, personal and professional growth both inside and outside of the classroom.

FAQs

“Geeks are passionate, almost obsessive, about particular areas of technology.”

13

WHAT ARE UAT’S CULTURE AND ATMOSPHERE LiKE?

UAT fosters a unique culture and atmosphere to ensure a wide range of choices for academic, personal and professional growth both inside and outside of the classroom. Students spend their time here studying and working on team projects in a nurturing environment that affords a closer connection to the faculty, staff and their peers.

From their first day on campus, your student will have hands-on experience with the same leading-edge technology tools and applications that industry professionals use. And UAT students take meaningful classes in their major in their first year. No waiting to complete general education requirements before getting classes in their area of interest.

WHAT EXTRACURRiCULAR ACTiViTiES ARE OFFERED AT UAT?

UAT provides a rich, engaging campus life. Our unique technology-infused campus facilities have been designed to enhance collaborative learning and innovation. Students, staff and faculty learn, create, live and play together in a team environment. Dozens of student clubs, organizations and activities enrich campus life and personal connections atUAT–AncientGames,Anime,Robotics,TechnologyPhilosophy, Yu-Gi-Oh and Japanese Language clubs are just a few that are available.

Students have the opportunity to attend major industry shows and events like the Game Developers Conference, Siggraph and Defcon through school-sponsored trips. UAT does not currently offer sanctioned, competitive sports, but we have hosted softball and paintball teams, a biking club and other similar recreational teams, all of which are popular, and necessary, ways for students to decompress from the rigors of studies.

WHAT ABOUT MEALS?

The University provides meal plans through our on-campus Café, which offers students a wide range of meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are also several restaurants within walking distance of the campus that offer student discounts.

HOW CHALLENGiNG iS ACADEMiC LiFE AT UAT?

Students should expect to face significantly more sophisticated expectations in the college classroom, and significantly more work hours, than in high school. College students are also expected to manage their own time effectively, complete more reading, question, think and write on their own, and keep track of their academic progress in each class as they complete degree requirements. UAT faculty expect students to do their best and are eager to help students work through intellectual challenges and to improve their academic skills. The University has available a number of academic support services for students. Student Affairs Coordinators will be the resource to help your student complete their degree. Student Affairs works with students in many different areas including academic advisement, students’ concerns regarding their courses, instructors or classmates, assistance with adjusting to college life and degree requirements checks and guidance.

WiLL THE COLLEGE ADViSE ME iF MY STUDENT iS HAViNG DiFFiCULTY?

With a student-signed waiver, you will have full access to the information you need to help your student to succeed. However, it is important to remember that federal privacy regulations require that student authorization be granted prior to the dissemination of any student information. Consequently, we do not routinely report students’ academic, social, medical or personal status to parents unless an authorization waiver has been signed by the student. We contact families only when, in our best judgment, the student’s well-being demands a family consultation. In such cases, we usually ask the student to make the first contact with his or her parents.

WHAT SHOULD MY STUDENT DO iF HE OR SHE iS HAViNG ACADEMiC PROBLEMS?

In the case of academic problems, the student should work closely with his or her professors as well as with his or her Student Affairs Coordinator.

14

HOW SAFE iS YOUR CAMPUS? UAT is a sanctuary for learning. Our safety record is very impressive. We have a number of programs in place to help ensure a safe environment. Campus security is maintained through diligent observation and surveillance by staff, faculty and security personnel. The campus is monitored 24 hours a day by a network of security cameras providing additional control and information for security personnel.

The University maintains enforcement of all laws and policies that prohibit underage drinking, use of controlled substances and weapons. Any student or employee that would like to obtain assistance on drug and alcohol prevention or to obtain counseling or assistance in connection with an issue of misconduct or crime prevention may request information from the Student Office. We can also facilitate referrals to a range of organizations which provide additional counseling and help. CAN MY CHiLD TAKE THE SUMMER OFF SiNCE UAT OFFERS A YEAR-ROUND PROGRAM?UAT’s Synchronic Learning model provides students with valuable time off between semesters. This academic model (www.uat.edu/synchroniclearning) gives students an intense focus that is reliant on continuous learning from semester to semester. Therefore, taking a semester off is not recommended. Attending year-round also allows students to complete their degree in less time, at a lower cost. However, students are allowed one academic leave of absence per year, so they may take summers off, if necessary.

DO WE QUALiFY FOR FiNANCiAL AiD?UAT understands how important financial aid assistance is to the majority of our students. In order to help you estimate the cost of attending college, we recommend talking with one of our Financial Aid representatives and using Financial Aid Calculators (www.finaid.org/calculators), an online tool that will help you and your family determine costs of attending college, how much you will need to save to attend, and how much financial aid you may need.

As soon as you file your taxes in your son or daughter’s Senior year, you should fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Applications become available on the web (www.fafsa.ed.gov) as early as January 1st of each year for funding periods of attendance between the following July 1 and June 30.

WHAT iS TEMPE LiKE?Tempe, Arizona, is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area or, as it is better known locally, the “Valley of the Sun.” Few states feature such spectacular weather and varied terrain as Arizona. Outdoor recreation is a year-round reality here. You can enjoy a walk near the campus in a T-shirt on a 70° February morning and then drive all little over two hours north to go skiing in the afternoon.

The Phoenix/Tempe metropolitan area features all of the cultural, social, educational and recreational opportunities you would expect in a major city. The mixture of this region’s Hispanic, Native American and Southwestern cultures and influences have created a vibrant, multicultural community like no other. And your student will be living where millions of other people come to vacation each year—you’ll love visiting them here!

iS MY STUDENT GOiNG TO GET A JOB UPON GRADUATiON?UAT’s Career Services offers many avenues of assistance to help your student get in the industry, once graduated. We offer individual résumé, cover letter and interview counseling, instruction on in-depth company and industry research, recurring seminars for building the résumé and cover letter (once a semester), recurring seminars for interviewing skills (once a semester), participation in industry conferences and events and assistance with job and internship leads. In addition, UAT also offers continual instruction about various job searching resources (i.e., job boards, professional organization membership and recruiters, as well as continual, revolving contact with companies and industries to find available internships) and permanent positions within the state and beyond.

TUiTiON AND TAX ADVANTAGES

Education tax credits can help offset the costs of education. The American Opportunity (Hope Credit extended) and the Lifetime Learning Credit are education credits you can subtract in full from the federal income tax, not just deduct from taxable income.

·American Opportunity Credit·Education Credits can help at tax time·Publication 970, Tax Benefits for Education·Form 8863, Education Credits (Hope and Lifetime Learning Credits)·Coverdell Education Savings Accounts — IRS

The tax code provides a variety of tax incentives for families who are saving for, or already paying, higher education costs or are repaying student loans. You may be able to claim a Hope and Lifetime Learning Credit for the qualified tuition and related expenses of the students in your family (i.e., you, your spouse, or an eligible dependent) who are enrolled in eligible educational institutions. Different rules apply to each credit. If you claim a Hope Scholarship Credit for a particular student, none of that student’s expenses for that year may be applied toward the Lifetime Learning Credit.

You may be able to claim a tuition deduction of up to $4,000 of qualified education expenses paid during the year for yourself, your spouse, or your dependent. You cannot claim this deduction if your filing status is married filing separately or if another person can claim an exemption for you as a dependent on his or her tax return. The qualified expenses must be for higher education.

You may be able to deduct interest you pay on a qualified student loan. And, if your student loan is canceled, you may not have to include any amount in income. The deduction is claimed as an adjustment to income so you do not need to itemize your deductions on Schedule A Form 1040. — IRS

In today’s tough labor market, a college degree dramatically boosts the odds of finding a job and making more money. On average, the benefits of a four-year college degree are equivalent to an investment that returns 15.2 percent per year. This is more than double the average return to stock market investments since 1950, and more than five times the returns to corporate bonds, gold, long-term government bonds, or home ownership. From any investment perspective, college is a great deal.” — National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE)

There is considerable support for the notion that the rate of return on investment in higher education is high enough to warrant the financial burden associated with pursuing a college degree. Though the earnings differential between college and high school graduates varies over time, college graduates, on average, earn more than high school graduates.

While it is clear that investment in a college degree, especially for those students in the lowest income brackets, is a financial burden, the long-term benefits to individuals as well as to society at large, appear to far outweigh the costs. — ERIC Clearinghouse On Higher Education, Washington, DC

In summary, your student will arrive at UAT as a somewhat scattered, but technology-crazed adolescent; maybe a whiz at math, but no so great at goal setting and organization. When he or she graduates from UAT, it will be as a poised, responsible,

competent adult who has mastered technology to the point that they can innovate in areas in which they were once only users. They will know how to work effectively as part of a team to complete complex projects. They will be prepared to contribute to society and industry in major ways. No longer a child, clearly, but making you more proud than ever.

Jacob Parks was 18 years old on his first day at UAT. By the time he graduated in summer 2011, less than two years later, he was 19 and embarking on the type of life that movies are made about.

Jacob now has a job with the federal government (they asked him not to say more about it than that). He has two degrees—a Bachelor of Science in Network Security and a B.S. in Technology Forensics. And, Jacob, who grew up in Bakersfield, Calif., is most likely going to be living and working somewhere on the East Coast.

While Jacob’s story is awesome, he isn’t the first UAT student to get snapped up by the federal government a few months before graduation.

One of the reasons the government heavily recruits from UAT is because it’s a Center of Academic Excellence for its Information Assurance coursework. That’s a hard-to-come-by designation from the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

“I was considering going to UAT, but what really sold me is that one of the school advisors sent me a handwritten card. That said to me, ‘You’re not going to get lost at a large school. You’re not going to be just a number.’”

within a year of his graduation from UAT, Stefan is already an experienced, multi-talented veteran in the game business. He says, “i came out of UAT already knowing how to work as a part of a team with other developers, artists and programmers, which is the way the industry works. other classes such as public speaking and portfolio building gave me some valuable presentations skills, which help me during meetings when i have to voice any design ideas i have.”

Rick is a freelance composite artist and 2007 graduate of UAT. Companies seek him out frequently and present him with new projects because he was crucial in saving earlier projects from disaster. “when you love what you do like i love what i do, it doesn’t feel like work. it feels like hanging out with friends,” says Rick.

“in a way, Rainbow Studios is like my experience at UAT. i’m given a lot of opportunity to expand and learn. i’m definitely enjoying my time in art production and still feel like there is more to learn, but eventually i may consider a director role on a game.”

After graduating from UAT, Robert started applying for jobs and learned of an opening at the Heart institute. “They sat me in front of a Compiler and said show me some recursion and some SQL. i did, and they hired me the same day.” Robert uses C# to write pragmatic solutions for the healthcare industry.

“What i like about UAT is that it’s the school i would have gone to as a kid, if i could have, because i’d find people like me.”
