made Minneapolis-Saint Paul a cultural mecca.
Day 2: Wednesday, June 15 City of Lakes Field Trip I Minneapolis Institute of Arts
We'll meet a former University of Minnesota professor and
author who will lead a stimulating discussion of historic
Minneapolis, setting the stage for a "City of Lakes" field
trip. Then, with our expert, we'll hop aboard a motor coach
for firsthand insights into the city's history and local lore.
Within the Minneapolis city limits are 22 lakes, creating a truly
"green" urban environment. After lunch at a local market, we'l!
coach to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and its vast collection
spanning 5,000 years of world art and culture - an art lover's
paradise! Art docents will lead us on a custom-designed
exploration of the Institute's major collections, followed by time
to explore the museum on your own.
Day 3: Thursday, June 16 Riverfront Walk I University of Minnesota I Walker Art
Center I American Swedish Institute
We'll begin the morning with our local expert leading us on a
riverfront walk for more insight into the city's architecture and
history. Then we'll coach to the University of Minnesota, a land
grant university founded in 1851, seven years before Minnesota
became a state. The main campus straddles the Mississippi
River and its notable alumni include Walter Mondale, Hubert
Humphrey and Garrison Keillor. Next, weIll experience
the Walker Art Center for an exploration of one of the best
contemporary art museums in the United States. Afterward,
we'll coach to the American Swedish Institute for lunch, then
go back 100 years at the Institute's magnificent 1908 French
Chateau-style Turnblad Mansion, former home to Swedish
immigrant and newspaperman Swan J. Turnblad.
Day 4: Friday, June 17 Guthrie Theater I Exploration and Preview of Theater
Performance I Performance
This morning we'll coach to the beautiful Guthrie Theater,
where a dramatic theater experience awaits. A local expert will
delve into Sir Tyrone Guthrie himself, explaining why he chose
Minneapolis above all other cities to build his grand theater.
We'll then go backstage to learn about the theater's state
of-the-art costume and scene shops. After lunch on site, our
expert prepares us for the evening performance with a thorough
discussion of the play, actors and stagecraft. After dinner at
the well-known Christos Restaurant, we'll enjoy the Guthrie
performance.
Day 5: Saturday, June 18 Theater I Foshay Tower I Treasures of Saint Paul
We have two gems to explore today before our evening musical
performance. A theater expert will join us after breakfast to
talk about the Twin Cities' diverse theater scene, second only
to New York. Learn about the innovative and progressive work
being done at theaters like the award-winning Penumbra
Theater, the country's largest African American Theater. We'll
take a short walk to Foshay Tower to learn about the expansive
growth of Minneapolis at one of the city's first skyscrapers.
From the top of the tower, history unfolds before us with an
unparalleled comparison of Minneapolis past and present. After
lunch on your own, we'll coach to St. Paul, where a local expert
will introduce us to some of the special treasures of the other

performance.
