Pitzer students make the world better by establishing sustainable partnerships with local communities, examining the complexities of progress, and learning how to create positive social change throughout the world.

The required Social Justice Theory and Social Responsibility Praxis paired course sequence teaches students about these themes through theory and practice courses taught by Pitzer faculty.

Community Engagement Center (CEC)www.pitzer.edu/cec

The CEC gives Pitzer students the opportunity to work in partnership with community leaders in forwarding social responsibility and community engagement through research, advocacy, and action.

Core partnerships with organizations in the greater Claremont community enable our students to explore change on a micro/macro level.

“Pitzer students really care about understanding the world we live in, the systems that we are a part of, why those systems are in place, and how we can improve those systems to make the world a better place. If you love asking questions and being part of a community that constantly wants you to learn more and strive to be a better person, Pitzer is the place for you.”

In 2017, Pitzer hosted the Reintegration Academy for 30 parolees, including sessions about higher education and job-training skills.

The innovative Pitzer in Ontario program allows students to take courses in community studies and research methods in conjunction with community- based projects and internships.

Pitzer students recognize that the world is comprised of many different experiences and stories, and that successful future leaders will need to approach challenges from an ethno-relative perspective.

Pitzer students are encouraged to investigate issues that matter to our ever-changing global community by examining these topics from different cultural perspectives. Through Pitzer’s eight direct-run study abroad programs, students immerse themselves in the host country’s culture, developing new perceptions of the world, and becoming global citizens.

“I engaged with intercultural understanding through studying abroad in Costa Rica. It was a great way for me to take what I’d learned in the Environmental Analysis and Economics fields at Pitzer and view those lessons from a Central American perspective. Pitzer is a really amazing community because it sends its students out into the world, and when they come back to campus, they have all of these new, amazing world views.”

Instead of being trained in a single academic area, Pitzer students develop multiple skills that prepare them effectively for the rapidly-changing job market they will enter after graduation. Students are taught to make immediate connections between academic disciplines, and pursue all of their academic interests at once.

Through the Consortium, I get to take specialized courses at Pitzer and the other Claremont Colleges. I can take the courses I want and still fulfill the requirements for my major.”

Pitzer is the first and only college to offer a program in secular studies.

Pitzer students can design their own special majors, which are developed with and approved by a minimum of two faculty advisors in the appropriate fields.

Dr. Halford Fairchild edited the book Black Lives Matter: Lifespan Perspectives with students from his Introduction to African American Psychology course, examining issues that affect people of African descent around the world.

Dr. Suyapa Portillo received a Fulbright Scholar Research Fellowship to investigate narratives of migration from the point of view of Hondurans, focusing on the experiences of women and LGBTI youth.

Dr. Lars Schmitz studies the evolution of eyes, and theorizes that the massive increase in visual capacity amongst early limbed animals enabled them to evolve more complex cognition and make the transition from water to land.

Pitzer students make decisions about everything from academic policies and faculty/staff hiring to public art displays and building design.

Our Student Senate is the largest student governing body per capita in the nation, which means the student voice is never lost in discussions about the College and its mission.
