ROBERTSON STATE SCHOOL Principal’s Update By Ms Margaret Berry VISIT TO JIANGSU SISTER SCHOOL Next week I will be visiting our sister school Jiefang Road Primary School Zhenjiang in the Jiangsu Province, China, to negotiate a sister school agreement and meet members of the school community. The Languages Other Than English (LOTE) and International Programs committee have been preparing for this intercultural exchange for several years. Last year we hosted Principals from Jiangsu Province and have since worked with Education Queensland International to progress this sister school arrangement. The primary school is located in Zhenjiang and has a similar school enrolment population to Robertson. Zhenjiang is a city with approximately 3 million people. I will share more details about our sister school on my return. WELLERS HILL BILINGUAL PROGRAM Last week the Administration Team and the LOTE and International Programs team visited Wellers Hill State School to view their bilingual Japanese Language program. This language program has just been recognised as finalists in the Education Queensland Showcase awards and I would like to pay tribute to Principal John Webster and Deputy, Louise Hart, and all the school staff for the amazing language learning that is occurring in P - 3 years. The bilingual program will move progressively through to Year 6. At Robertson we now have 30 minute lessons of LOTE Mandarin being taught from P - 6 and we are currently investigating other models of language teaching in our school. I would like to thank our LOTE and International Programs team: Kama Zhang, Joy Hsieh, Joy Wang, Cathy Coleman and Geri Kallioinen for their work. To prepare our students for a global interconnected world, being fluent in more than one language is a preferred workplace skill. SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT AGENDA – READING AND SYNTHETIC PHONICS At the beginning of the year Synthetic Phonics was introduced to Prep classes at Robertson to have a consistent approach to teaching phonics and to set a sound basis for early reading skills. Master Teacher, Tracey Leong, has been the key teacher leading the introduction of this program with Prep teachers. The program presents sounds and blends at a faster pace and works on decoding. To date we have seen a very pleasing improvement in the confidence of Prep students with their phonics and subsequent improvements in early reading skills. The Synthetic Phonics program has progressively been introduced to Year 1 and Year 2. I would like to recognise the work of Tracey Leong, Deputy Principal, Cartia Balladone and the Prep teachers and teacher aides for their work with reading. CONGRATULATIONS STRING ENSEMBLES Four of our string ensembles performed at the Goodna Jacaranda Festival last weekend. Not only did the groups receive three gold and one silver award, but the Paganinis also won the ‘overall best ensemble performance’ award from the participating groups of both high schools and primary schools. JACARANDA FESTIVAL

CELEBRATIONS

Congratulations to Mrs Robyn

Gray for the outstanding results

of our Corelli, Mini Mozart,

Paganini and Vivaldi Orchestras. Each of the groups performed at

the Jacaranda Festival with

Robertson achieving three gold

and one silver award.

The competition involved primary

and high schools students

performing in various levels of

competitions over the day. All

entries were judged within their

categories and also considered for the overall perpetual trophy. The

perpetual trophy was awarded to

the performance which was

considered the most outstanding

on the day.

It was exciting news to find out

the Robertson Paganini

performance was awarded the

perpetual trophy for 2017. Our

students were compared to the high school performances and

considered exceptional. Well

done!

Thank you to all the parents for supporting this competition.

Many thanks to Ms Vanderbyl

and Mrs Waldie for their support

on the day and leadership in the

Music department at Robertson.

SUPPORTING READING IN OUR

COMMUNITY

Can you assist in the donation of

reading books?

We are currently assisting

Crestmead State School with

their ‘Books in Homes Project’.

If you have second hand books at

home that your children have out

grown or no longer read, please

send them to school. They will be

sent to Crestmead and donated to their families in Term 4.

The books can include hardcover

books for toddlers or younger

readers, picture books or chapter

books, Encyclopaedias or damaged books would not be

donated. Thank you for sharing

your love of reading with our

community and thank you for

extending that love to another community in need.

Bring your books to the office for

collection.

LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM

PREP - YEAR 3

Final payments for the swimming program are coming in, thank

you to our families for getting

these updated. The closing date

for money collection will be

Friday 11 November. Payment

can be made online or at the administration.

If your child is not a strong

swimmer this will be a perfect

program for them to participate in as the lessons are structured at

their ability levels. Alternatively,

if your child is a confident

swimmer they will have an

opportunity to work with other

skilled swimmers and instructors on their techniques around the

pool.

If you have any questions please

contact the classroom teacher or our office.

Deputy News Year 4 to Year 6 By Mrs Jennifer Johnson STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Next week we will begin to speak

with students about the next step

in the process towards gaining a

leadership position for next year. Shortlisted School Captain and

School-Vice Captain applicants

will be asked to prepare a speech

to give their fellow students and

teachers. Voting will commence

after that.

WRITING

We have been working hard to

measure the improvement we are

making in teaching and learning in writing. The teachers are

pretesting students at the

beginning of the term to

determine the specific learning

needs of the students in their

classes. At the conclusion of the term, they are assessing to check

how well the students have learnt

the concepts they have taught.

We are making some very

pleasing growth in all areas of the 6 Traits of Writing.

Congratulations to the teachers

for the effort they are putting in

to differentiate for their students.

YEAR 6 GRADUATION Our final celebration for the Year

6 students and teachers will be

on Monday 5 December at the

graduation. It is being held in the

hall. We will be serving refreshments at 5:00pm for a

5:30pm start to the ceremony. A

letter will soon be sent out to the

parents of Year 5 asking for

volunteers to assist with the set

up for the night. We would appreciate your help if you could

make time for us.

Principal’s Update

VISIT TO JIANGSU SISTER SCHOOL

Wellers

Louise

Geri

Kallioinen。

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT AGENDA – READING AND SYNTHETIC PHONICS

Mast

er Teacher, Tracey

Cartia

Aims of You Can Do It! Education
