Whether looking at the plights of students who are of:

-Different color or race, -Women in STEM disciplines, -Different sexual orientation-Different (Trans)gender -Different races -Varied religions, or-Students with Different Cognitive/Physical Abilities,

They all share one thing in Common: Oppression.

Definition: An Ally is any person of a majority populationwho supports, empowers, or stands up for another person or a group of

underrepresented people, so as to create positive short term or system wide change.

This training program examines the nature and impact of oppression for all people/populations, and the common threads ofhelpful responses that majority-based people can adopt to sensitize their Environments as Allies.(Check the following calendar dates below):

Special Series: Talking Race Coming This Winter….February 2016

From the Office of Diversity and Inclusion

A series of four educational programs, designed to help people dialogue about race relations.

1. KNOW BETTER, DO BETTER: College, Racism, and YOU,February 16, 2016; 6PM-8PM; Ingle Auditorium, Student Alumni UnionSpeaker: Lawrence Ross. Author of the book, The Divine Nine (2010), addresses the historical roots of racism on college campuses, how to prevent it, and what you should do about it, as an entire campus, and as a student body, united as one family.

2. ‘A Conversation With White People on Race’February 23, 2016; Noon – 1:15PM (Student Session); Mosaic Center

Based on a release by the NY Times and filmed in NYC, “Why do so many white people find it extremely uncomfortable to talk about race?” Based on this video/documentary, we hope to address that question. Because we live in New York, where there is no shortage of opinions, we didn’t think it would be too hard to do….”

“For generations, parents of black boys across the United States have rehearsed, dreaded and postponed “The Conversation.” But when their boys become teenagers, parents must choose whether or not to expose their sons to what it means to be a black man here, and how they might be targeted as men of color. How does one teach their child about racism?

Spring Term Experiences Special Series:

Understanding Unconscious Bias (Implicit Association) Initiatives

A *coordinated effort among academic and diversity offices, to examine the phenomenon of unconscious bias in groups, organizations, and the community, as a community.

Initiative #1 The Honors Capstone Seminar, will meet on Tuesdays beginning January 26, 2016 through May 11, 2016, open to senior level students through the course registration process in Fall Term.

Content will focus on the nature of the unconscious bias. Students will complete the Implicit Association Test as a self-assessment regarding implicit bias, and discuss the leadership and professional development of participants.

1:30 PM. offered through CPD; watch for Announcements. The Implicit Association Test is a Harvard-based on-line assessment tool developed by Benaji and Greenwald regarding unconscious bias. Participants will take the instrument confidentially along one of 14 different subscales and return for part2 April 18 for group processing.
