In addition to classics, we will introduce you to lesser-known works by composers you already know, music by living composers, and music by women composers, including Jennifer Higdon, Lili Boulanger, and Florence Price.
Of particular note is Howard Hanson’s opera Merry Mount, which will be performed here before the RPO takes it to Carnegie Hall for the Spring For Music Festival in 2014.
World-class soloistsWe bring you top-notch soloists, including violinists Jennifer Koh and Philippe Quint; pianists Jonathan Biss, Jon Kimura Parker, Barry Snyder, and Joyce Yang; and cellist Edward Arron.
Fantastic PoPsYou’ll meet The Midtown Men, singing hits from the 1960s, and jazz vocalist Curtis Stigers. Beethoven’s only opera, a tale of devotion and heroic valor, gets a rare concert performance. And “one of New York’s most exciting young cellists” (The New Yorker) performs Haydn’s First Cello Concerto.
Bach’s glorious Magnificat and his majestic orchestral suite (including “Air on a G String”) are paired with Respighi’s luminous Adoration of the Magi for a festive celebration of the season.
Beethoven’s towering Symphony No. 9 is one of his supreme achievements with its glorious setting of “Ode to Joy.” The concert opens with a masterpiece by French composer Lili Boulanger.
These French and Russian composers painted evocative pictures with their music. Russian-American violinist Philippe Quint (“brilliant technique and compelling personality” –Cincinnati Enquirer) shines in works by Saint-Saëns and Ravel.
Celebrate Black History Month with Schwantner’s piece featuring text by Martin Luther King, Jr., Duke Ellington’s Harlem, and Florence Price’s symphony. You’ll also hear Van Cliburn silver medalist Joyce Yang playing Gershwin.

We welcome back Conductor Laureate Christopher Seaman for Beethoven’s virtuosic Second Piano Concerto, with Rochester favorite Jon Kimura Parker, Bruckner’s rich and expressive Sixth Symphony, and Berlioz’s festive overture.
This preview of the RPO’s Carnegie Hall Spring For Music Festival performance—coming up on May 7, 2014—features a rare concert performance of Howard Hanson’s lyrical opera Merry Mount.
Shostakovich’s compelling Tenth Symphony has been called “the composer’s finest work … moving from bleak desolation to a triumphant finale” (Chicago Classical Review). Arutiunian’s virtuosic concerto features the RPO’s Douglas Prosser.
Holst’s sonic, celestial showpiece The Planets explores the planets’ astrological personalities. This is paired with selections from Walton’s stirring score to the film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry V, starring Laurence Olivier.
