Rock And Roll Exposed AnalysisType of Documentary - This type of documentary is mixed as it contains archive footage and interviews.

Themes – The main themes within the documentary are rock’n’roll, explosion of punk and rebellion.

Narrative – The narrative is linear and portrays the story of the photographer Bob Gruen, and how he became a popular photographer in the music industry. At the beginning Bob starts off as a freelance photographer, then starts to do lots of work with bands. By the end we find out Bob stopped working with bands because eventually they split up.

Camerawork – Talking head shots are used many times in the documentary as well as close ups of peoples faces. Bobs photographs are also shown on screen and are used as cutaways whilst an interview is on-going. The camerawork remains pretty much the same throughout the documentary, by showing Bobs photographs to the audience whilst an interviewee is talking creates an image of Bobs journey in the audiences heads.

Mise En Scene – Many still images of Bobs photographs are used as well as many different settings are also used such as café’s, clubs and studios. This portrays the rock and roll life style of chilling out, having fun and making music. The bands and artists shown in the documentary are also wearing the rock and roll fashion e.g. tight jeans, no shirt, long hair etc.

Editing – Constant cuts to pictures of the bands that were relative to the voiceover of the interviewee’s created a picture of what the voiceover was talking about. Simple cuts and zooms in and out of photos created a simple but effective story for the audience. Film strips were also used to cut to another part of the documentary.

Sound – Non diegetic rock music can be heard in the background to give the documentary the feel and style of Rock and Roll. The non diegetic music was often the band that was being talked about on the documentary. There was no narrator however diegetic sound of interviewee’s talking created a picture of what Bobs journey was like.

Archive footage – Lots of archive footage was used in the documentary, mainly pictures of the bands that were taken by Bob and used as cutaways for interviews. The pictures related to what the interviewee would be talking about and helped create a visual narrative for the audience.

Graphics – No graphics were used apart from an animated film strip which helped cut to a different part of the documentary. The film strip relates to how cameras used to take pictures back in the time the documentary explores, therefore the strip is relevant to Bobs older photography days.
