Principal’s Update
We have reached the end of
what has been a difficult term
for both students and staff and I
would like to thank the
students, staff and parents for
their continued support of the
college.
Year 11s have finished their
PPEs, and completed their final
full term at the college. The
results of their PPEs will form
their personalised learning
checklists to assist them in their
revision for the GCSEs in the
summer term.
As you are aware, we have
recently undergone an Ofsted
inspection, the inspection letter
will be available in due course
and we are pleased with the
outcome.
This term we are saying
goodbye to Mr Shepherd who
has taken a teaching job at
another school. We wish him
well for the future and thank
him for his work here as both a
History teacher and House
Progress Leader. Miss Demuth
will be taking over Mr
Shepherd’s history classes.
As you are aware Mr Challen is
acting House Progress Leader
for Victorious and we are
pleased that Mrs Belasco will be
taking over Triumph until the
end of the college year.
Mrs Williams has been
promoted to Student Support
and Guidance Manager and
after Easter, Mrs Cavinder and
Miss Dolby will be joining the
Student Support Team.
Mr Smith a Higher Level
Teaching Assistant in Science,
will be joining the science team
as a newly qualified teacher and
starting after Easter, Mr Brown
will be the replacement Higher
Level Teaching Assistant.
This term we have also
welcomed Miss Bowles and Mrs
Pescops as Teaching Assistants
and Mr Slade as a Cover
Supervisor.
Enjoy your Easter break and let’s
hope that we do not see any
more snow!

Extra curricular
activities broaden
horizons
We have been very busy this term,
with students out on various trips
and events. To help plan for their
futures, in January, Joe Hickey,
Austin Hardy and Tommy Solen
visited Military Mentors to take
part in a cookery demonstration by
The Royal Navy.
Rock Challenge
We are proud of the 57 students
who participated in this years Rock
Challenge on Tuesday 20 February.
The theme Anonymous won the
team 5 Awards of Excellence in the
following categories:
Stage Use
Choreography
Stage Crew
Entertainment
Performance
A big thank you to Oak Road Co-op
for donating food supplies to keep
us all going.
Year 7 got inspired at
Portsmouth Guildhall
A group of 30 Year 7 students
visited Portsmouth Guildhall’s ’Get
Inspired’ careers fair. The students
had the opportunity to explore
many different career options and
enter competitions. Harmony
Storey and Jake Andrews both won
prizes for their enthusiastic
participation and feedback.
Year 10 explored opportunities
at Fareham Apprenticeship &
Jobs Fair
Year 10 students were invited to
attend the Fareham Apprenticeship
and Jobs Fair hosted by Suella
Fernandez MP at Ferneham Hall on
Thursday 8 March. This gave the
students the opportunity to chat to
many local employers, the Armed
Forces and local colleges to help
them plan for their futures.
Budding STEM enthusiasts
participate in robotics challenge
The Henry Cort Community College
was chosen from 196 schools
across the country to take part in
the Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP
Robotics Challenge – an exciting
national robotics challenge that
challenges students to be involved
in “space missions”. The
Tomorrow’s Engineers EEP Robotics
Challenge introduces student
teams to real-world engineering,
technology, robotics and
computing challenges.
Our students met every Tuesday
afternoon to learn how to build,
program and control autonomous
LEGO robots to complete a series of
short, exciting space missions. They
also researched, designed, planned
and presented their own solution
to a contemporary scientific
problem - developed by LEGO
Education with NASA. The
culmination of these weeks of
intense learning was the regional
competition at the Richard Taunton
College Southampton.
Out of 16 schools that competed at
the regionals finals, our team won
the prestigious trophy for the
aviation challenge but narrowly
missed out as the overall top
school. The RAF engineers were
very impressed with the design and
creativity of the team and their
depth of scientific understanding.
Benjamin Lovering, Sam Carney and
Daniel Vartan were very impressive
with the various tasks and Maxim
Ganev’s paper aeroplane design
received good commendations.
Overall, it was a great day and I was
impressed with the depth of
knowledge of our students and
their ability to solve real
engineering problems.
Well done to Sophie Greentree,
Caitlin Adey, Maxim Ganev, Daniel
Vartan (Exceptional), Samuel
Carney (Exceptional), Benjamin
Lovering (Exceptional), Harry
Woodward (Exceptional), James
Ross, Anna Fowles, Amber Hawkins.

Exam and Revision Support
It is impossible to over-emphasise the importance of serious, planned
revision. Wherever possible, students are advised to study on their
own, in a quiet room, without the distractions of music and television.
There is lots of revision information available to view on our website:
www.henry-cort.hants.sch.uk/examrevisioninfo. The Year 11 GCSE and
Key Stage 3 exam timetables is also available to view on the same

the university further and take part
in academic workshops.
Year 10 took part in a two day
event where they became part of
the United Nations and learned
how to negotiate and network
amongst other soft skills. We are
very proud of the Henry Cort team
– Alfie Birks, Catherine Brewerton,
Lauren Evans, Ethan Farrell, Dean
Lawrence, Sarah McArdle,
Charlotte Smith and Charlie Steer –
who came 3rd overall.
Watersports Trip 2018
Thank you to all parents for
keeping up with payments for the
Water Sports Trip, it is much
appreciated. We are quickly
approaching May Half Term and
students and staff are becoming
very excited. Hoodies are
available to buy, letters have
gone out at the Parents Evening
on 20 March. Please ensure you
bring your child’s passport and
EHIC card into myself by
Thursday 29 March so that they
can be checked and photo copied
for our records.
If you were unable to attend the
parents evening, please make me
aware so that I can send your
Parent Pack, with vital
information in, home. Let the
count down begin!
Mrs Belasco
Careers Education
The Henry Cort Community
College has an excellent record of
delivering outstanding Careers
Education, Information, Advice
and Guidance (CEIAG) to its
students. We are committed to
providing our students with a
comprehensive programme CEIAG
and Work Related Learning (WRL)
throughout Years 7-11.
We have decided that the college
should aim to achieve the
Investors in Careers award by the
end of 2019. Investor in Careers
(IiC) is a nationally recognised
Quality in Careers standard award.
It is designed as a development
tool to help raise standards and
recognise excellence in careers
education, information, advice
and guidance (CEIAG).
The Award is based on the
Investor in People model and
includes in its structure the key
features of the quality assurance
cycle. The Award is structured
around four key elements relating
to the management of Careers
Education, Information, Advice
and Guidance.
Commitment
Organisation
Delivery
Evaluation.
There are three assessed stages to
the full award of Investor in
Careers covering eight outcomes
in total.
We will keep parents informed of
our progress and may contact
some for evaluation purposes.
This term we launched a new
careers resource Career
Companion to help students and
parents look at different career
paths:

Sport Roundup
We have been very busy this term in
the PE Department, with students
competing in various sports across
all age groups. We would like to
thank all of the students that
regularly turn up for us and give us
100% commitment when they
represent Henry Cort.
Unfortunately we have been hit by
‘The Beast from the East’ which has
caused many fixtures to be
cancelled. We are however looking
to rearrange as many of these as we
can fit in. Most of our sporting
highlights are shown on our Twitter
page @HenryCortPE as seen on
pages 4-5.
Individual Achievements
We are proud to hear of the
following students’ individual
achievements outside of college:
Billy Campbell and Mike Thomas
have been selected in the London
Irish Bronze Rugby Academy.
Zach Shue represents Hampshire
U15s and also in London Irish
Bronze Academy.
Holly Cristofoli represented GB in
the junior dressage team.
Molly Baker – Cheerleading,
National Standard.
Gabby Bedford – Rugby for
Trojans
Charlotte Smith – Archery
Reece Bramley – competes for
CrossFit Fareham #6, he has
recently entered the Cub Open
competition competing world
wide.
Toby Steward has been chosen
for the South East Hants District
Cricket team and is on the cusp of
being put into the Hampshire
Cricket side at his age group.
Sport Leaders News
It has been a busy term for the
Sports Leaders and primary school
sport. Seven events have taken
place at Henry Cort since Christmas
with over 300 primary school
children from 16 local schools taking
part in a number of different sports
with places to the Hampshire School
Games up for grabs in all of them.
The competition standard is high.
Our Henry Cort sports leaders have
officiated, scored and provided
training at all of these events and
have been brilliant in their
enthusiasm and professionalism.
Sport Leader responsibilities include
organisation, setting up pitches/
courts, refereeing or scorekeeping
and some leaders are focused on
looking after school children,
assisting the primary teachers in
running the teams and making sure
the competition runs smoothly.
We can confidently say that,
without the hard work of the sports
leaders, these events would not
attract the numbers they have and
certainly would not run as
professionally as they have done.
Katie Hewitt, Amba Murdoch, Gabbi
Bedford and Joe Davies have been
exceptional in their officiating and
have received numerous plaudits
from primary school staff. Oli
Ingram, Charlie Bell and Ben Godwin
have been instrumental in
organising the teams and scoring
each event.
Other sports leaders who have all
been vital in making these events
possible are Toby Hancock, Harry
Cook, Rebecca Vartan, Mia
Madgewick and a special mention to
Toby Steward who took on the
responsibility of team manager for a
primary school team.
The sports leaders are not only vital
to the competitions running but
they also make them enjoyable for
the primary children and they
deserve special praise for this. I
have asked all of the staff who have
been at these events who they
would like to nominate as Sports
Leader of the Term. It was a close
run with only a couple of votes
separating the top two but our
Sports Leader of the Term this time
goes to Katie Hewitt. Well done
Katie you have been brilliant!
We have seen a huge increase in
participants from primary schools in
these tournaments and festivals.
The netball saw 12 different teams
enter squads of 9 and the tag rugby
brought in over 100 children. We
have been able to run additional
events and new festivals for
younger children to allow all
children the opportunity to
compete. We have started working
with local community clubs,
Fareham Heathens and Fareham
School of Gymnastics, to allow the
children a route into sport outside
of the curriculum.
Next term starts with a Change For
Life Festival, completely set up and
run by our sports leaders and then
we will move into summer sports
including; rounder’s, tri golf and
athletics.
Thank you to all of the Sports
leaders, you have been superb this
term.

Invincible
House News
The end of term two
already and the summer upon us
(you can tell by the weather!).
Another successful term for
Invincible and our many gifted
students.
Mrs Connochie would especially like
to mention four students: Sophie
Crook, Katie Privett, Freya Peck and
Kirsty Wareham-Collins who have
performed in The Kim Ellen School
of Dance annual dance show. It is a
fantastic variety show of song and
dance with ages from 2 to 16. Katie
won the runner-up prize for senior
progress and Sophie won the all-
round dance trophy. Very well done
girls.
Also a mention to Freddie Oliver,
who is doing very well with his
boxing and Iris Lin, who is making a
huge effort, settling in very well and
improving her English by the day.
Miss McKay’s tutor group have four
students who very much deserve a
mention too. Mollie Baker is off to
Paris in a few weeks to participate in
an International Cheer competition,
Ethan Farrell is still training hard
with Fareham Heathens, Izzy
Smithson has taken part in the
Stubbington 10k and regularly does
park runs and Lilly Downer has her
grading for the 6th mon in Judo.
Miss Mckay hates to single out
anyone however, because she tells
me that she has a lovely group and
that they all deserve a big very well
done!
Mrs Howat writes: IHP have had a
good term and are working hard as
usual! Joseph Brooks and Callum
Ulke have been particularly
enthusiastic during tutor time and
are happy to lead activities and
encourage others to take part too.
Amba Murdock has been really
busy with sporting activities and
getting involved with football and
cross country with the school teams.
Rachel Myers is enjoying playing the
Bassoon with the Hampshire youth
Orchestra and is looking forward to
her next performance.
Year 11 have been
revising hard for their
PPEs and deserve some
good results!
And finally from Mrs
Durham, everyone in
IDH has maintained a
positive attitude
throughout this term and we are
keen to keep our title as the tutor
group with the most house points!
Our year 11s have had a really
positive attitude towards their PPE
exams and our year 10s have also
been very positive about their
recent R.E exam. Our year 9s
continue to be a funny and lively
presence in tutor. Our very lovely
and sensible year 8s continue to
work very well and their behaviour
is very positive in all of their lessons.
Our year 7s are enjoying their time
at Henry Cort and continue to be a
delightful addition to our tutor
group. We are all looking forward to
the summer term and hopefully
some warmer weather!
A big thank you from me Invincible
for being fabulous. I mean it!
Mr Rhodes, House Progress Leader

TAB is the tutor group with the
highest overall number of House
Points. Mrs Belasco is doing
something very right with her tutees
there.
That brings me to my last point. I am
signing off as House Progress Leader
for Triumph and will be handing the
Triumph reins to Mrs Belasco. I am
heading to pastures new, well old
actually as I have taken another job
at a school closer to where I live.
I have been at Henry Cort for 17
years. I stayed that long because I
think it is a great school and great
place to work.
I wish everybody associated with
the school good health and
happiness.
Mr Shepherd,
Triumph House Progress Leader
Victorious
House News
Firstly I would like to say a massive
thank-you. It has been a hard term
for all of Victorious and the college.
It has been amazing to see the
House and the college pull together
after the sad loss of Mrs Lloyd. She
would have been incredibly proud of
us all. It is with real pride that I am
writing this as Acting House Progress
Leader and I am excited to continue
to support the students in the
House.
This has been another amazingly
successful one for Victorious with us
once again leading the way for top
house.
Tutors were asked to name their
good eggs to be celebrated in praise
assembly. Tutors found this
incredibly challenging but wanted to
recognise these EGGSellent
students: VBC- Lacey Way, Louie
Wakefield, VBW- Ashleigh Lycett,
Poppy Trace , VGA- Kay Halsall,
Emma Norris, VGC- Tyler Watts,
Kiara Taylor, VGD - Gen Crouch, Izzy
Kimberly, VHW - Rhys Richards,
Catherine Brewerton, VMC- Josh
Judge, Niamh Edmunds VNS- Ryan
Badger, Jasmin Amin VST - Kyle
McLachlan, Poppy Nicholls, VWS -
Amber Jeffries, Megan Webber. And
not a special mention goes to Mr
Copelin who was nominated twice
by Josh as the best person in the
tutor group.
This term, 72 Victorious students
received Bronze certificates for
achieving 50 house points and 78
students have received 100 House
points and have been awarded their
Silver certificates. An amazing 21
students received gold certificates
for achieving 200 house points
already.
At the top of our House Points is
Star Firman in VNS, has managed to
achieve over 350 house points and
has been awarded her Diamond
Certificate. Well done to you.
Outside of college the students in
the House continue to excel.
Catherine Brewerton is
planning a trip to Mexico with
the guides. She will be off in July
2019 and will be undertaking
some animal welfare
conservation and helping
students with their writing,
reading and communication
skills. So far Catherine has
raised around £1,100 and will
continue to raise more money
over the summer.
Alice Crossley did a voice over
for a commercial for the
University of Winchester.
Catherine Jeffrey took part in a
dance competition called
dancing with choirs.
9
Bryony Gray is 3 star in her
kayaking course and will be
kayaking from Lee on Solent to
Ryde in May.
I am writing this waiting for the cast

Daring House
News
The Spring Term has
been a challenge for
many of the students but has
continued to be successful for
students in Daring house in many
ways. This was celebrated in the
presentation of the ‘Good Egg’
awards in the final assembly of the
term. The students receiving these
awards have demonstrated
excellent work in lessons or have
demonstrated helpfulness,
perseverance or resilience in some
way. Between them they have
some excellent Progress Reports,
some making outstanding progress
since Term 1. They have taken
responsibility within their tutor
groups, leading activities, planning
assemblies and generally being
active members of the group. Some
of them are outstanding sports
leaders, involved in helping to run a
wide range of primary school
festivals this term.
On behalf of all the Daring tutors
that have nominated you to be
recognised for your efforts, I wish
to say a huge well done and thank
you for all your hard work.
DLT - Anastasia Mullen and
Toby Hancock
DCB - Ellison Day and Dylan
Enfield
DJP - Anna Fowles and Oliver
Howe
DJW - Lauren Evans and
Charlotte Galloway
DVB - Holly Cristofoli and Billy
Campbell
DDA - Tim Summers and Henry
Atkins
DPS - Harriett Shrimpton and
Mya Simpson-Allen
DNC - Sophie Howe and
Andrew Evans
DCA - Ryan Ojla and Mikey
Brooks
DLH - Mme Hubert found it
difficult to nominate just 2
students so the award was
shared between the whole
tutor group!
A large number of Daring students
have also been involved in extra
curricular activities this term in
particular Rock Challenge and this
weeks’ production of the ‘School of
Rock’. A personal thank you to all
of the students who performed in
the Rock Challenge competition in
February. It is always such a
positive event and students really
do rise to the occasion helping out
with hair and make-up etc. Indeed
this year I felt a little bit like a spare
part as the students had it all
organised for me.
I know a large proportion of
students are also performing this
week, despite the onset of the
dreaded end of term lurgy. I am
very much looking forward to
watching it on Thursday evening – a
nice way to go into the Easter
break.
A special mention also needs to go
out to Holly Cristofoli who has
recently been selected to compete
with the Junior GB Dressage team.
Holly’s first competition was a
couple of weeks ago and she
achieved huge success, including
being asked to compete for the
additional day where she came 1st.
This places Holly 3rd overall in the
GB team with some exciting
opportunities ahead. We wish her
the best of luck!
This is also the last opportunity for
me to say thanks and farewell to
the Year 11 students in Daring.
They are currently working
incredibly hard towards their final
GCSE exams and have been a
fantastic group of students to work
with. I wish you all Good Luck for
the future!
Mrs Warner,
Daring House Progress Leader
