2015 – 2016 Governor’s Message

Jon Mangino

I’ve had the pleasure of installing officers at several clubs around our district, as well as attending a “club opening event” in Seattle with Governor-Elect Kathy Lee and Formula Chair LeAnn Zetmeir. The common denominator at each club visit, and with the 80 Kiwanians that gathered in Seattle, is passion for service. I always come away charged after visiting with fellow Kiwanians. That spirit of collaboration with each other is why I feel that we are going to have a great year with the Formula. Your leadership team is hard at work developing a strategy to open more clubs thus increasing our local impact. For more information, be sure to read LeAnn’s letter in this edition of the Kiwanian. Besides the Formula, plans are underway for our Spring Training (Mid-Winter) to be held in March in Fort Collins. We are planning several informative forums planned along with some inspiring guest speakers. Be sure to mark your calendars for March 11 – 13, 2016. We’re also hard at work planning for this year’s district convention in Pueblo. New to District Convention this year will be Oscar night! Oscar categories include most money raised from a fundraiser, most service hours by club and by member, most new members added (by club and by member), best newsletter, best website, most “fun” member, best president, best secretary and best pancake flipper. Keep these Oscar categories in mind as you impact your communities this year. I’m looking forward to celebrating Kiwanis collective impact in August! Thanks for all you do!

There is a lot happening in the District! And I am so very appreciative to

work with dedicated Kiwanians.

As Mid-Winter, aka “Spring Training” focuses on Kiwanis education, the

event committee is working diligently to develop a full slate of training

breakouts. Based on recent feedback, there will be a variety of breakouts

designed to educate our newer members & incoming officers, and

rejuvenate those of us who are seasoned members.

Kiwanis International moved the RMD Website to a new platform last

month and it could not have happened without Roger Coke’s webmaster

expertise! Every page had to be edited and updated. Please visit and be

sure to let us know if we need to update any information.

While at the webpage, be sure to click the menu item “clubs” and then “map of district clubs”. It will take you to a map of the district with teardrops indicating where the clubs are located. Thank you Rebekah

Romberg, CSU CKI for creating this awesome tool!

Welcome Tom Martinez Jr as the new District Secretary. With your knowledge of Kiwanis, I know you will be a real asset to the District.

Ken Lewis, Pueblo Kiwanis Club is already organizing the District Convention

Golf Tournament. The club is excited about hosting the District Convention

August 4 -7, 2016.

The Foundation Board met October 10, 2015. Congratulations to LeAnn

Zetmeir Board President, Sandra Dahl Vice President, Steve Cooper

Secretary and Brian Blasi Treasurer. As the newly appointed Foundation

Executive Director, I look forward to working with this dedicated group.

Kelly Steck-James & Company are developing a strategy for getting Bert

West elected as Kiwanis International Trustee. Each club has the

opportunity to send two delegates to Kiwanis International Convention

June 23 – 26, 2016. RMD needs a large group of delegates to attend this

meeting to support Bert. Meet Bert here!

Thank you all for your dedication, commitment and enthusiasm as we serve

the children of the Rocky Mountain District and the world!

Yours in Service,

Nancy J Wiehagen

RMDK Aktion Clubs

The Northern Colorado Aktion Club at Foothills Gateway met in May to discuss a service project for the upcoming year.

As a group, the club decided to plant a garden for the ‘Plant it Forward Project’ for the Larimer County Food Bank.

What is Plant It Forward?

The Food Bank for Larimer County, in partnership with the Gardens on Spring Creek, launched “Plant It Forward” in 2011 in an effort to increase their local produce donations from backyard gardeners and local farms. Community members have been invited and challenged to plant an extra row in their backyard garden, and as the produce becomes available, to drop it off at either the Food Bank for Larimer County or the Gardens on Spring Creek.

The Aktion Club decided that this is a great way for them to give back to the local community through this amazing project.

Club members cleaned out and prepared a raised bed garden on site and decided on the type of vegetables that they wanted to grow.

Currently, they have tomatoes, tomatillos and zucchini. They are also preparing to plant some radish seeds.

Each meeting, the club takes the opportunity to see the progress of the garden and tend to it. You can see their enthusiasm in these photos!

Thanks to Reni Moreno, Foothills Gateway Program Supervisor and Aktion Club Facility Advisor for submitting this article.

Bringing Service Leadership to Teens! By: Barb Fuller, District Key Leader Chair

Windy Peak Key Leader Class of 2015

The Windy Peak Key Leader weekend was perfect in so many ways. We had a full house of 60 students, gorgeous weather, and our Lead Facilitator, Josh Hiscock was dynamic. The room was abuzz with Key Clubbers meeting people from other schools and making friends.

So many people gave their weekend to make Key Leader at Windy Peak a success. A Key Leader weekend needs a dedicated site coordinator,

and Dawn White has done a

masterful job visiting Windy Peak in preparation for our visit.

She was also able to get a sizeable grant from Thrivent Financial to buy snacks. As everyone knows, a group of high school students can eat a lot of snacks. Key Leader only gives us $2.00 per person to purchase snacks for an entire weekend! The Kiwanians who volunteered their weekend to act as chaperones deserve a big

thank you too. Kiwanis chaperones included: Kathy Lee, Ray Kepler, Dawn Ignatius, Lindsey Finklang, Bruce Simmons, and Amanda May. We also enjoyed the company of Circle K Governor

Austin Good.

We really appreciate Kiwanis Clubs who helped pay for the teachers who attended with their students. Some of our schools are requiring a faculty member to attend. This is such a help for Key Clubs with newer advisors. They are able to connect with other advisors and get ideas for working with their clubs. They also got a good idea of the values of Key Club and service leadership. Many Kiwanis Clubs encourage students from their Key Clubs and other school groups to attend. The Key Clubbers, in turn, are excited to return to their clubs with energized leadership. If your Kiwanis Club has not sponsored a student, please consider doing so next fall. Special thanks go to the Kiwanis Clubs who do not directly sponsor a Key Club, but went out of their way to recruit and/or fund students. We will be meeting again on the Western Slope at Roundup River Ranch near Gypsum. We hope to see many more students at Roundup River Ranch on November 6-8!

KIWANIS FAMILY NEWS

CKI Tamara Smalley

Rocky Mountain District Circle K Event

Coordinator

On behalf of the Rocky Mountain District Circle K, Thank you for providing a grant towards our President’s Retreat. The retreat was hosted September 11th-13th at the YMCA of the Rockies.

The attendance fluctuated on a day-to-day basis with a total of 19 participants, including; 4 International Representatives, RMD Kiwanis Governor, RMD CKI Board and Administrators, and presidents/officers from University of Northern Colorado, Colorado State University, University of Colorado – Boulder, University of Colorado – Pueblo, Colorado School of Mines, and Western Nebraska Community College. Both CU Pueblo and WNCC are both just starting up, so their turnout at this event was phenomenal.

Throughout the course of the weekend, an abundance of information, ideas, and community were shared. Interactive group sessions were ideal for the new forming clubs to hear a variety of ideas from both club and district levels. Friday evening was a time that largely focused on building connections with each other, as having a support system throughout the district is beneficial for the clubs to grow, share ideas, and have contacts and friends to reach out to. That evening, a CKI 101 was provided to benefit especially those starting new clubs, but also as a refresher for those who had already been in CKI.

8

Page 9: Rocky Mountain Kiwanian - Amazon Web Services · Dubois WY Brighton CO Lt Gov Division 12 Lt Gov Division 13 ... Fort Collins CO general information about the subject The RMD Kiwanian

Saturday was a day packed full with information and ideas. Key points that were included: Service Projects, Service Partners, Retention, Club Spirit, Ice breakers, among many other great discussions. The International representatives had tremendous advice and suggestions to offer to everyone who attended, with many ideas being new. The collaborative environment of this retreat was a terrific aid in not only educating everyone but also in creating a sense of excitement.

RMD Governor Jon Mangino was

able to attend for a portion of Saturday’s events, and offered great insight as to what is occurring in the Kiwanis Rocky Mountain District, as well as talk about Kiwanis Relations.

Accompanied by Jan Reed and Ray Kepler, they emphasized that Kiwanians want to help and participate with CKI clubs. This was superb encouragement for all of the clubs in attendance.

Witnessing all of the connections and excitement that formed over the course of this weekend was an

incredible experience. The more conversations that took place, the wheels started turning for what

everyone wanted to begin this year. We had some very last minute registrants, such as Western Nebraska

Community College, and based off of this retreat, the president for that club has immense enthusiasm.

Without this retreat, we couldn’t have reached out as successfully to WNCC and CU Pueblo in particular.

Thanks to the grant provided, we were enabled to carry out this retreat and hit the ground running.

Representatives from just 6 of the clubs were able to attend, but those six clubs were able to obtain

valuable information and relationships. Had we expected participants to pay, the impact would have likely

been significantly less, so we again thank you for your generosity and support in allowing for the Rocky

Mountain District CKI President’s Retreat to be a success.

It is my pleasure to share the exciting and valuable

accomplishments of the Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis

Foundation (RMDKF) that directly benefit the children and young

families of our great Rocky Mountain District.

Our mission is to financially assist the 90 clubs of the Rocky

Mountain District in their effort to promote the Health, Safety

and Welfare of children in their communities. These efforts are

only possible through the generosity of Kiwanians and the

Kiwanis Clubs they represent.

We will continue, for the second year, with the RMDKF’s Board of Directors flagship projects - the

Ronald McDonald Houses of Denver, Aurora, and Colorado Springs and the Rose Hill Hospitality House

in Grand Junction.

These facilities provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill or injured children who

receive medical care in a nearby hospital. In addition to providing lodging and meals, the “homes”

provide support for families who need a safe, friendly, inexpensive (often free) and compassionate

place to stay while dealing with a difficult and often costly medical hardship. Kiwanis members join

with the Board in discovering creative ways the Kiwanis membership can volunteer to assist at the

houses. The RMDKF Board contributed a television set for each room at the newly constructed Ronald

McDonald House in Denver. We are financing the remodeling of the kitchen in Colorado Springs at the

Southern Colorado Ronald McDonald House. At the Rose Hill House, Kiwanis sponsored the Rose Hill

Bike Rally where $28,000 was raised to purchase much needed items such as mattresses, bedding and

carpeting.

Our Grant awards are an exciting and very important part of the good work done by the Foundation.

These grants are made possible only through the generosity of Kiwanians and Kiwanis supporters

throughout the Rocky Mountain District. The Foundation Board receives and reviews grant requests

from any club, within the Rocky Mountain District, who requests financial help for a specific service

project. Upon determination that the project meets the guidelines of the Mission of the Foundation,

the grant is often extended to the club. Enjoy reading about each of the grants as they are updated

quarterly in the Kiwanian newsletter.

The Board and I wish to thank each of you, as valued members of the Kiwanis Rocky Mountain

District, for your support of the Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis Foundation. Your love of children and

their families and your generosity, insures the future of Kiwanis throughout the Rocky Mountain

District.

Kiwanians of the RMD have a Heart for Kiwanis - let’s let the world know by celebrating what’s

right with Kiwanis!

Foundation Board Grant Awards

At the October 10, 2015 Foundation Board Meeting, the Rocky Mountain District Kiwanis Foundation

awarded $2,700 in grants.

Southwest Denver Kiwanis Club $1,200: Kiwanis Closet is a program providing

clothes at four elementary schools in Southwest Denver. These clothes are used when children have an “accident” at school. The closet allows the child to change clothes and remain in the classroom, in lieu of a parent coming and taking them from their classroom and missing the lessons.

Lander Kiwanis Club $1,500: The Kiwanis Club of Lander, Wyoming is seeking funds

to upgrade the Northside Park which is a Kiwanis sponsored park. The project consists of painting the ceiling of the shelter, painting the grill area, and pouring a 12x24 concrete slab adjacent to the shelter so families and children can sit in the open on cooler days. The Club plans to apply for a matching grant to provide two picnic tables for this addition. The project will provide additional seating for activities and improve the image of the shelter area. The Kiwanis logo is displayed at the shelter and we want it looking nice. The club is working with an Eagle Scout candidate to assist with the project

Ten members of the Scottsbluff Kiwanis Club serve

as table crew to package rice and bean meals. The meals were distributed to local food pantries as well as to the local backpack program in area schools. Each packaged meal provides six servings and it was estimated 500-600 local children will benefit from the meals over the course of the next year.

DIVISION 4 PIKES PEAK RAISES FUNDS FOR ELMINATE PROJECT

Successful Flapjack breakfast at Applebee's, 495 Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs on the morning of

Saturday, October 3rd. For the second year in a row we as Division 4 Pikes Peak Region Kiwanians, Rocky

Mountain District are able to send Kiwanis International Foundation over $2,500.00 to support Kiwanis / UNICEF

maternal/neonatal tetanus Eliminate Project (1436 babies and mothers saved from tetanus)!

What really made it a successful event was Applebee's was able to serve 232 breakfast (104 more than last

year), the majority to foster children and their families which we "piggy backed" on our ticket sales to support a

local charitable organization, Fostering Hope Foundation. We greatly appreciate the support we received from

the Colorado Springs Executive Association members!

The Columbine Kiwanis Club, with Sandy Legge as Project Leader, started a program called Family Care Kits. When patients arrive at Littleton Adventist Hospital in an emergency situation, accompanying family members are often unprepared. Our club has filled the gap by providing family members with “Family Care Kits.” Included items are: water, tooth brush, tooth paste, puzzle, pens, and snacks. We include a card from us telling family members who provided items and inviting them to come for a free breakfast. Sandy lets the club know when she needs supplies through our email blast, newsletter, and announcements at the meeting. She provides a list of items needed. Members bring the items to the meeting and we have a work session assembling the bags. Typically we deliver 60 Kits, and always receive a nice thank you letter from the nursing staff.

CREATION Camp Teaches Wellness and Was Fun for Everyone CREATION (Choice, Rest, Environment, Activity, Trust, Interpersonal, Outlook, and Nutrition) Camp is a Castle Rock Adventist Hospital program to expose kids to 8 principals that will lead to a healthier, happier life. The inaugural Camp was held Monday, August 10 thru Thursday, August 14.

The Camp is a partnership between Castle Rock Adventist Hospital (CRAH) and Kiwanis Club of Castle Rock (KCCR). David Martinez, CRAH Chaplin along with Lauren and Joe Schmitt of KCCR who were the

principal organizers of the 4 evening camp. KCCR donated $5,150 to get launch the program. Volunteers from both CRAH and KCCR provided the feet on the ground support. CREATION Wellness is a program supported by CRAH to help kids have fun learning about healthy choices. The Camp is a free 4-evening event for children ages 6-12. The structure of the camp is to break the kids up into teams identified by various colored T-shirts. Each evening the kids gather as a whole and are taught the CREATION principals they will work on that evening. They also sing songs and receive a pep talk by the “coach” for the first 10 minute segment. The kids then move through 5 stations as teams. The stations are food, health, games, crafts and Bible. The kids spend 10 minutes at each station where the principals of the day are stressed in activities. The end of evening concluded with a recap of the principals for the day, a song and a prayer. All involved enjoyed the experience and are beginning to prepare for next year’s camp. It is anticipated to be bigger and better.

The Formula with a Heart for Kiwanis

LeAnn Zetmeir RMD Formula Chair

The Rocky Mountain District Kiwanians understand that at the Heart of everything we do, it’s the children and youth of our communities and the world that is Kiwanis.

In 2012 the leadership of the Rocky Mountain District introduced a new culture, “Celebrate What’s Right with Kiwanis.” The Heart of Kiwanis was born as a member driven initiative. It encourages Kiwanians to take a serious look at their current service projects.

Do the projects continue to have an impact in your community? Are you reaching the right audience? Are projects relevant to the needs of your community? The Heart of Kiwanis encourages Kiwanians to use the five member-developed themes to find a new project that might enhance a club’s position in their community. The membership was offered a simple and meaningful tool, “The Plan of Action” which focused on utilizing one of the five themes: Fun, Service, Action, Relationships and Inclusiveness.

In 2013, Kiwanis International created a 5-year plan called The Formula - Love it. Live it. Share it. The Formula is a member based initiative which focuses on what you Love about Kiwanis, Share it with great stories and experiences, and Live it through being the spark that improves lives. Live Kiwanis out loud! The Formula is designed to open new clubs through member involvement and to strengthen struggling clubs through conversation with their Lt Governor and Club Counselor. Lt Governors and Club Counselors are Kiwanians who love Kiwanis, and have a passion to listen and ask questions that are designed to be coaching, not telling. The Formula is working in areas that have actively embraced it.

Overall, during the 2014-2015 administrative year the Kiwanis organization lost 2.37% membership in North America and the Caribbean. Kiwanians opened 208 new clubs, the highest number in the past 10 years. The Service Leadership Programs such Key Club, Aktion Club, and K-Kids once again broke membership records. We increased our associate memberships among Key Club and Circle Alumni. Unfortunately, the Rocky Mountain District was one of the two least best districts with a loss of 5.7% membership.

We have heart, we have resources and we have Kiwanians willing to commit and ready to serve. We can and we will do better during the 2015-2016 administrative year!

If you have a Heart for Kiwanis and would like to learn more about the Rocky Mountain District’s plan for opening and strengthening Kiwanis clubs, or joining the team, please contact me. My email is [email protected] and my phone number is 970.260.7209.

We need every member to commit to strengthen their club. The opportunity to serve is a gift and it is you the member that can offer that gift.
