I know it’s been a busy time for all of us due to our involvement with our schools. Terrific Kids, Bring Up Grades and year-end academic achievement awards are our focus as the school year comes to an end. It’s very rewarding to witness the excitement of these school children as we give our presentations. I wish the entire world was as innocent as the eyes and expressions of those youngsters.

Thank you all for your involvement in the our 100th Anniversary Food Drive. This past month everyone participated in a “food drive” with the goal to collect 10,000,000 pounds of food. It’s come to my attention that the price varies in different areas. I apologize for any misunderstanding on the amount of pounds of food you could buy for $560. Children are starving in all of our areas all year long (not just around the holidays); any amount donated is needed and greatly appreciated. We are all working hard for the success of our service project and have extended the project through June 15. Go here for a listing of food banks.

We are eight months into our Kiwanis year, and we still need to focus on achieving our goals. Growth with service is our purpose. I thank each of you for your commitment to our goals; we need to remain focused to accomplish them.

Cultivate – Help us establish new Clubs in areas we currently do not serve. Give yourselves a 100th birthday present and finish the year at least +1 in membership. Be a part of the Formula Team. Love It. Share It. Live It.

Eliminate – If you haven’t pledged to help rid the world of Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus, do so NOW. We want to complete our $3.5 million goal in the memory Tom Dimmock. We are at 92% of our goal, so dig deep for Tom!

Celebrate – Plan a special 100th Anniversary fundraiser, service project or banquet or all three. Strive to be a Distinguished Club as a present to yourself for our great milestone. We received proclamations from Governor Haley in SC and Governor McCrory in NC proclaiming January 21, 2015 as Kiwanis Day.

Liberate – We need each Club to contribute at least $500 to the Kiwanis Cottage 50th Anniversary Legacy Fund Campaign to make sure that the Kiwanis Cottage is operational for perpetuity.

It is with great pleasure that I report that we have +91 members through May. Six regions, seventeen divisions and 74 Clubs have positive growth this Kiwanis year. Be proud of all the effort that is being made to recruit and retain members. Here is a list of Clubs that have +4 membership growth or better: Banner Elk +22, Black Mountain-Swannanoa +14, Raleigh +13, Wilmington +13, Seven Lakes +9, High Point +8, Hampstead +8, Hope Mills Area +8, North Brunswick +7, Florence Pee-Dee +6, Aiken +5, Cape Fear +5, Charlotte +5, Greater Greenville +5, Oxford +5, Asheboro +4, Columbia +4, Goldsboro +4, Lenoir +4, The Sandhills, Moore County +4, Tarboro Golden K +4 and Tryon +4. Thank you! We can serve more children w ith more Kiwanians.

WE STILL NEED YOU! It’s too late to register for Indianapolis online, but they are accepting registrations on-site. Make plans to be a part of history and also to be there when we elect Elizabeth Tezza as International Vice President. The Carolinas District has not had an International President since 1960-61. Our time is now.

August is just around the corner; I hope you’ve made plans to attend our District Convention in Pinehurst August 14-16 at the spectacular Carolina Hotel. I could not think of a better location to learn more about Kiwanis, celebrate our 100th Anniversary, begin the next 100 years of serving the children of the world, and network with Kiwanians, the greatest “givers” on earth, all in a VERY relaxed atmosphere. This convention will be like no other you have attended - one you won’t want to miss.

We have quite a few new club building sites in the early stages of development. Where will our next club be: Brevard, Clayton, Goose Creek, Morehead City, West Brunswick, Yadkinville, Pleasant Garden or a surprise location? I really LOVE surprises that benefit children. TOGETHER we can make a difference in our communities, the world and in the lives of the children we serve. As always, thanks for all y’all do for Kiwanis and the youth we serve.

Yours in Kiwanis Service, Coop

YMCA Receives Grant from Greensboro Kiwanis GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 20, 2015) — Children participating in the Hayes-Taylor Memorial Family YMCA’s Pre-K day care program are now able to experience learning through the latest cutting-edge technologies, thanks to a recent grant from the Greensboro Kiwanis Club. The Hayes-Taylor Memorial Family YMCA received a Greensboro Kiwanis Grant of $25,000, which it has used to install technology and software provided by Hatch Early Learning (Hatch). Based in Winston-Salem, Hatch is the leading provider nationwide of classroom materials and technology for early learning. Since its founding in 1984, Hatch’s technology and classroom materials have helped prepare more than 500,000 children with essen-tial skills to succeed in school and beyond. The Hayes-Taylor Memorial YMCA’s Pre-K day care program is a year-round, full-day, licensed day care program for children ages 12 months – five years. The program works to provide learning opportunities through a variety of programs and activities designed to develop core character traits including honesty, caring, respect and re-sponsibility in a quality, safe and fun environment. The Hayes-Taylor Memorial YMCA also offers an after school program for children in kindergarten – eighth grade. Through the Greensboro Kiwanis Grant, The Hayes-Taylor Memorial YMCA has been able to transform one if its classrooms at its new facility into a Technology Classroom. Students ages 12 months – five years are now able to experience learning in a whole new way, through a teaching smart board, an interactive learning table, an all-in-one computer learning center, and two mobile classroom tablets. “We are thrilled to receive this generous grant from the Greensboro Kiwanis Club,” said Larry Burnett, executive director of the Hayes-Taylor Memorial YMCA. “We believe that responsible use of technology not only improves the way kids learn but also readies them to use more technology in the future. Through this grant, we are able address both of these issues in our day care facility.” By Craig Fishel, Upstream Public Relations

special ones planned for this year’s 65th graduation reunion. Peggy has also organized the “Glitter Girls,” a group of her graduation friends, and they meet for lunch and “lots of talk” once a month. Peggy worked for K-Mart for 31½ years in both their personnel and advertising departments. She retired in 1996 when her husband was diagnosed with cancer and took care of him until his death in 1997. This was a turning point in her life and she decided to become a community volunteer activist and assist those needing help wherever possible. She joined the West Asheville Kiwanis Club in 1996 and jumped right into their community projects. She became an advisor to the Enka High School Key Club, a Kiwanis sponsored high school service organization, and worked diligently to help all their projects become a success. [West Asheville Kiwanis], realizing her potential, elected her President after a short time in the club and in following years elected her four more times. She served five years as President before the club folded in 2009. After West Asheville folded, Peggy immediately joined the Asheville Kiwanis Club and became involved with their major projects: delivering flowers to area nursing homes at Christmas, ringing the bells for the Salvation Army red kettle, filling backpacks with school supplies for needy kids at the start of each school year, and taking deserving children on a shopping trip so they could buy toys for themselves and gifts for family members. Her love for working with the youth of her area continued with her becoming the advisor for the Enka High School Key Club. She attends all their early morning meetings and also their work projects; the kids call her “Miss Peggy”. Peggy is also currently working with staff at Carolina Day School to establish a Key Club for their students. Once a month she and a few other Kiwanians go out to Emma Elementary and Leicester Elementary Schools for the Terrific Kids program. Monthly, Peggy recognizes the kids reaching their goals with a Terrific Kids badge, certificate, pencil, bumper sticker, and dictionary. The club has tried to convince Peggy to consider being President again but she says “five times was plenty.” She has accepted a position on their Board of Directors for four years and has perfect attendance for her seventeen years in Kiwanis. In 2013, Peggy was recognized by her peers as “Kiwanian of the Year.” Outside of Kiwanis, Peggy is a volunteer worker on all elections, and she drives friends and neighbors to doctor visits when they are no longer capable of driving. Her monthly calendar at-a-glance rarely has an opening or free day, and that’s the way she likes it.

GOVERNORS VISITS

June 5 North Wilkesboro Club Meeting 6 Western NC Aktion Club Conference 24-27 Kiwanis International Convention

See more dates here. Pictured left: Governor Cooper stands with Past President Nancy Wells, and President Steve Hobbs on May 27 at the Kiwanis Club of Wilmington’s 95th Anniversary Celebration. Since 1920 the club has been fulfilling its mission of offering service and leadership opportunities to those who desire to serve the needs of children, youth and adults in the local community and throughout the world. Some of the programs and organizations currently supported by the club: The Brigade Boys and Girls Club, UNCW and

CFCC scholarships, three Key Clubs, UNCW Circle K, Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, Cribs for Kids, Junior Achievement, the Kiwanis Miracle Playground, Teen Court, the Kiwanis International Foundation, the Carolinas District Foundation, and more.

John Franco of Waynesville, NC is Division 1 Lieutenant Governor for the two-year term 2014-2016. He graduated from Florida State University in 1966 and the University of Georgia in 1974. John's history with Kiwanis is brief when compared with some of his fellow Waynesville Kiwanians who have been members for more than 40 years. Since becoming a member in the Fall of 2008 he has served on the club's board and as President . In August of 1995, John retired from a 29-year career in the United States Air Force. During this time he served in command and staff positions in several states and overseas. For all you homesteaders, how do 23 dwellings in a 40-year career sound? In the early 1980’s he was stationed in the Azores, Portugal along with an Air Force chaplain who, twenty-five years later, introduced and sponsored John in Kiwanis. This just shows the Lord works in mysterious ways. Following retirement from the Air Force, John was employed by the Florida Department of Banking and Finance, serving as a regional director and then as Inspector General. He later became the Inspector General for the Department of Education and retired in the Fall of 2007. In the Spring of 2008, he and his wife, Suzy, became full-time North Carolinians. John and Suzy have two daughters and five grandchildren. They are active members of New Covenant Church in Clyde, NC. John also plays tenor sax in the Haywood Community Band and loves to sail whenever he gets a chance.

Clubs Recognize One Day

in a BIG Way

Kiwanians and members of our service leadership programs across our great district turned out in big numbers to participate in Kiwanis International's scheduled Kiwanis One Day of Community Service on April 11, joining thousands of members all over the world. The event seeks to give emphasis to our committed interest in reaching out in help of communities in many varied ways. In what has become a tradition, Region 5 Kiwanians from many of its clubs together with Campbell University CKI members, and Key Clubbers from Harnett Central, Western Harnett and OverHills High Schools (pictured below) gathered at the NC Boys & Girls Home at Lake Waccamaw. The event was planned and hosted by Region 5 Trustee Becky Horton with assistance from Lt. Governors Michael Cotten (Div 10), Amy Johnson (Div 11) and Greg McDonald (Div 26). Governor Gary and his wife Debbie graced the region with their presence. Commencing with fruit, danishes, juices and coffee and great fellowship, a brief meeting followed with district and region updates and presentations by Governor Gary, Gary Green of the Home and Governor-Elect Candidate Mack McLeod. Then it was off and runnin'. The attendees paired off to tackle some twenty assigned "chores" and also to pack goody bags for children. Tours of the Home were organized. Then all enjoyed a terrific lunch in the well decorated hall with music furnished. Two cakes were presented to the group, one highlighting 100 years of Kiwanis and the other highlighting the 50th year of the Kiwanis Cabin. Not done yet, the group participated in fifteen different games with residents in the quad, and prizes were awarded. While this was going on, many from the Kiwanis Club of Greensboro were hard at it at the HorsePOWER Therapeutic Leaning Center digging, chopping down trees and clearing the fence line, with some not avoiding poison ivy! Also, members of the Kiwanis Clubs of Winston-Salem, Twin City, and Clemmons (pictured above) participated in the March of Dimes "March for Babies" walk in support of the unit in Winston-Salem. Surely there was more activity to the benefit of our communities by our organization. Send your club’s story to the District office ([email protected]) for inclusion on our website.

Governor Cooper's 100th Anniversary Service Project Friday, February 6, 2015, the Carolinas District Board of Trustees adopted a food drive as the district's 100th Anniversary Service Project. Past Governor/Region 2 Trustee Bill Wiggs challenged clubs to give 100,000 lbs (or 2.5 truckloads) for our 100th birthday. On average, a truckload costs $560. Who: All Carolinas District Kiwanis Clubs are invited to participate. This is a great project for our Service Leadership Programs to help on as well. Why not work together and accept Bill's challenge? What: A food drive to acquire at least 10 million pounds of food (250 truckloads) throughout North and South Carolina by clubs giving to their local foodbanks. Work with your local food bank/food pantry to provide funding or food to acquire truckloads of food. Promote the event!!!! When: New: May 1 through June 15, 2015 Where: A Food Drive/Fundraiser at your local club for your local food bank Why: 15.8 million American children lived in homes with food insecurities in 2012. (One in four children in NC) 62% of teachers regularly see their students come to school hungry. Hunger has been linked to lack of focus and poor test performance in K-12 students. Food banks are by far the single most important source of food for emergency food providers, accounting for 84% of the food distributed by pantries, 59% of the food distributed by kitchens, and 40% of the food distributed by shelters. Find your local food bank here: NC: http://ncfoodbanks.org/ SC: http://scfoodbankassociation.org/ Questions? District Dinner

District Events in Indianapolis Both district events have been set for Thursday, June 25, 2015: District Caucus 7:30 am, The Embassy Suites Downtown

District Dinner 5:00 pm Social, 6:00 pm Dinner, $50 per person Indianapolis Roof Ballroom (adjacent to Embassy Suites)

It's not a party without you! Click the link above to register for the dinner.

Unlike years past where we had a maximum of revelers we could support, this year we have a minimum required, and we're not there yet! Almost 90 members and guests are on board for our big party. We need at least 120 to meet our minimum. So if you were thinking about joining us, act now. Everyone from the Carolinas should attend. We usually pick up a few requests at the convention but we need those commitments now. Everything is earlier due to the Thursday evening Kiwanis opening session. Our social time begins at 5 PM with dinner at 6 PM, tickets are $50 each. You won't want to miss this signature event. To make your reservation please click here. This is an outstanding venue and we need everyone's participation to make it a true celebration. (It's not really on the roof) Please consider joining us. Thank you to those that have already signed up.

Amendments and Resolutions Update The Kiwanis International Board recently determined three important updates regarding the amendments and resolutions to be considered at the 100th Annual Kiwanis International Convention. • A new administrative resolution on company-based clubs • The Board's position on Proposed Amendment 6 about web-based voting • A second report from the Task Force on Online Voting

A revised copy of the amendments and resolutions has now been posted at www.kiwanis.org/amendments. Clubs and delegates should consider this new information.

New District Bylaws

This August at the District Convention House of Delegates, we will be adopting the new standard form for bylaws. This is a total re-haul of the bylaws and is what Roberts Rules of Order calls a revision. Our whole new bylaws are considered ONE motion, not several individual motions rolled into one. We will go through the new bylaws in sequence, considering one piece at a time unless the house-of-delegates votes to consider them as a whole. This consideration section-by-section won’t necessarily take a long time.

The new bylaws, a chart of changes, and the old bylaws with shown changes are available here on the district convention webpage.

We will be holding two informational sessions during the month of July at 8:00 pm to explain the new bylaws and to answer any questions you may have. Save the dates!

Thursday July 9

Tuesday July 28

Conference Call Phone details will be provided in CDNews on June 17.

Per Article VIII. Conventions, Section 4 of the Carolinas District Bylaws: Section 4. The Secretary shall send to each chartered club and to the International Executive Director an official call to the annual convention at least sixty (60) days prior to the date of the convention, and an official call for any special convention at least thirty (30) days prior to the date of such convention. The District Board of Trustees shall have full supervision and management of all conventions. ARTICLE XX. AMENDMENTS of the District Bylaws states: Amendments to these Bylaws, if in conformity with the Bylaws of Kiwanis International, may be adopted by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the delegates and delegates-at-large voting at any convention. The District Secretary shall receive proposed amendments, which shall be submitted only by a club in good standing or by the District Board of Trustees, at least sixty (60) days prior to the date of the convention. The District Secretary shall send a copy of all proposed amendments to the secretary of each chartered club not less than thirty (30) days prior to the date of the convention. A convention mailing went to all Club Presidents and Secretaries the week of June 1-5, 2015. Any amendments to our District Bylaws are due by June 15, 2015.
