    Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss

A rolling stone gathers no mossis an oldproverb, credited toPublius Syrus, who in hisSententiaestates,People who are always moving, with no roots in one

place, avoid responsibilities and cares. As such, the proverb is often interpreted as referring to figurativenomadswho avoid taking on responsibilities or cultivating

or advancing their own knowledge, experience, or culture. Another interpretation equates "moss" to "stagnation";as such the proverb can also refer to those who

keep moving as never lacking for fresh ideas or creativity.

a frequently replanted plant or tree (respectively) yields little fruit.[1]It appears that the original intent of the proverb saw the growth of moss as desirable, and that

the intent was to condemn mobility as unprofitable.

The contemporary interpretation of equating moss to undesirable stagnation has turned the traditional understanding on its head: Erasmus's proverb gave the

name "rolling stone" to people who are agile (mobile) and never get rusty due to constant motion.

A "rolling stone" is interpreted as an unsettled person or a busy person and "moss" is interpreted something to be avoided or, conversely, something to be desired.

    M e a n i n g

Someone who does not settle in one place rarely prospers.

    O r i g i n

This proverb refers to what is well known about mosses and lichens - that they are slow-growing organisms that don't thrive ondisturbance. A sure way to prevent a colony of moss from growing on a stone is to move it about. As with all proverbs, it isn't

the literal meaning that conveys the sense but the metaphor. A 'rolling stone' refers to a wanderer, unable to settle to any job or

lifestyle and therefore characterised as unreliable and unproductive.

That notion was known to the ancient world and Greek and Latin versions of the phrase are cited by Erasmus in the third

volume of his collection of Latin proverbs -Adagia, 1508.

The proverb may have come into colloquial English before then, although early records are incomplete. We do know that it was

in use by 1546, when John Heywood publishedA dialogue conteinyng the nomber in effect of all the prouerbes in the Englishe

    tongue:

The rollyng stone neuer gatherth mosse.

Heywood's claim in the title to include all the proverbs in English is a little overstated, but Dialogueis the most comprehensive

early collection and the source of many previously unrecorded proverbs. They were assembled from various sources, including

Erasmus'Adagesand from his own collecting amongst the Tudor populace.

By the early 17th century, a 'rolling stone' was referred to as a type of wastrel - one who would amount to nothing. InA

dictionarie of the French and English tongues, 1611, Randle Cotgrave listed the French word 'rodeur' and gave it this definition

    in English:

Rodeur: A vagabond, roamer, wanderer, street-walker, highway-beater; a rolling stone, one that does nought but runne here

and there, trot up and downe, rogue all the country over.

Quite a good name for a rock band you might think and Brian Jones thought just that when he formed the eponymous

blues/rock band in 1962. Despite what appears to be Mick Jagger's impressively dogged attempt to sleep with most of the

models in London and despite his long-standing friendship with Kate Moss, journalists have not yet had occasion to wheel out

the inevitable headline 'Rolling Stone gathers Moss'.

A person who does not settle down is not attached to anything or anyone. (Can be said in admiration or in censure, depending on whether or not the speaker feels

it is good to be attached to something or someone.)

People say this to mean that an ambitious person is more successful than a person not trying to achieve anything. Originally it meant the opposite and was critical of people

    trying to get ahead.

"I know I've quit 10 jobs in three years, and having no fixed address makes it hard for the government to track me down for c hild support payments, but that's just

my style. A rolling stone gathers no moss!"

The band the Rolling Stones took their name from this saying, and so didRolling Stonemagazine, after the phrase became popular as a way for bohemians,

hippies, and beatniks to explain their philosophy. It's the perfect catchphrase for free spirits who don't want to cramp their style by putting down roots.

    What It Originally Meant

"A rolling stone gathers no moss, which sucks because a naked, gray rock without any moss on it is an affront to all that is good.Fuck that mossless rock!"

Our first clue that this has been bastardized is the fact that versions of it go back almost 2,000 years, to ancient Roman rhetorician Quintilian. This was an era

when the most rock star lifestyle imaginable involved owning a nice plot of land and paying your taxes on time. Nobody was writing about the virtues of being a

    free-spirited drifter back then.

In fact, Quintilian helpfully avoided the confusing "stones and moss" metaphor andused the much clearer"A plant often removed cannot thrive." Well, that makes

more sense: If you keep ripping up a flower and replanting it every week, it's never going to grow. In fact, there wereother versions over the centuries, which included

"A tree often transplanted is never loaded with fruit" and "... as the rolling stone gathers no moss, so the roving heart gathers no affections," both of which have the

advantage of not assuming that the listener likes mossy rocks in their yard.

But the moss-and-stone metaphor is the one that survived, and that's why the hippies could think that a proverb intended to encourage settling down not only

supports bouncing around from place to place, but actually warns againstsettling down, as if a long-term career and family is somehow harmful to the human

soul. All because a generation of people read this metaphor and thought, "Eew, moss."

If a person never stays in one place, he or she never "gathers" or gets attached to things or people. Moss grows on stones which have been on the

ground for many years, so a stone which rolls cannot grow moss.

The saying is " A rolling stone gathers no moss." It means if you keep moving and learning that you don't just sit there becoming a couch potato.

It is true a rolling stone gathers no moss but only overtime. At the begging of the rock rolling then it will gather moss, but overtime it will lose all the

    moss it has gained.

The term 'rolling stone' commonly refers to a person who is frequently changing his work or profession. Just as a stone that is continually rolling doesn't

gather any moss on it, similarly a person who is constantly changing his occupation doesn't succeed in any achievement. Acquisition of wealth or

learning or experience requires time and steady prolonged application of energy to some task. On the other hand one who is constantly chopping and

changing will never become wealthy or learned or experienced. He will merely be dissipating his energies and will get nowhere.

The popular fable of the farmer who dug many shallow wells in his farm in search of water is a fine illustration. Had he dug deep at one place, he would

have definitely found water. By being 'a rolling stone' few people accomplish their goals. In today's world of breakneck competition, migratory birds

stand absolutely no chance. It is by working at a place, putting in constant labor that one earns a reputation and recognition.

A person who never settles in one place or who often changes his job will not succeed in life; one who is always changing his mind will never get

    anything done.

    Mothers Day

thechrysanthemumis given to mothers for Mother's Day as the flower is naturally in season during May (autumn in Australia) and ends in "mum", a common

affectionate shortening of "mother" in Australia.

each person offers a gift, card, or remembrance toward their mothers, grandmothers, and/ or maternal figure on mother's day.

Greeting cards, flowers and gifts featuring mothers

small celebrations and gift-giving to one's mother, grandmother, or other important female figures in one's family.

Carnations are a very popular Mother's Day gift and the most sold flowers i n relation to the day.

celebrated by expressing love and gratitude to mothers. People present gifts to mothers (such as flowers) and hold surprise parti es and competitions, which

include cooking andkebayawearing. People also allow mothers a day off from domestic chores.

Homemade "Mom's the Word" cookie bouquet features cookie-k-bobs made of sugar cookie butterflies, flower

to give cards and gifts and to serve mothers breakfast in bed.

Children give gifts and spend time with their mothers. Daughters give their mothers cards and handmade gifts and son's give their mothers gift s and flowers.

Individuals honor their mothers by giving gift s and commemorative articles.

Children perform most chores that the mother routinely handles, prepare food or give their mothers small handcrafted tokens such as cards.

It is also said to be celebrated in May, as May is the month dedicated to the Virgin Mary (mother of Jesus) according to Catholicism.

Many worshipers celebrate the day withcarnations, colored if the mother is living and white if she is dead.

Mother's Day, or Mothering Sunday, is now a day to honor mothers and other mother figures, such as grandmothers, stepmothers and mother-in-laws. Many

people make a special effort to visit their mother. They take cards and gifts to her and may treat her to brunch, lunch or high tea in a cafe, restaurant or hotel.

People who cannot visit their mother usually send gifts or cards to her.

An important part of Mothering Sunday is giving cards and gifts. Common Mother's Day gifts are cakes, flowers, chocolates, jewelry, and luxurious clothing. Some

people do not give a physical gift, but choose to treat t heir mother or grandmother to a special meal, beauty treatment or fun outing.

Specially decorated Mother's Day cakes are available in many stores. In the days and weeks before Mothering Sunday, many schools, Sunday schools and

children's organizations help their pupils to prepare a handmade card or gift for their mother.

One of the biggest traditions these days on Mothers Day is giving flowers. Mums around the world are often treated to bouquets oftheir favourites by sons and daughters showing their appreciation. In centuries gone by children picked their own flowers to give totheir mothers or decorate the local church for Mothering Sunday services.

These days florists and shops specialise in preparing lavish and colourful arrangements of Mothers Day flowers which can bedelivered around the country, with many florists opening on the Sunday itself to carry out extra deliveries in order to meet thedemand. Bouquets can be personalised as well with a thoughtful card or by choosing mums favourite colours to make up thebunch.

Other gifts are popular too for celebrating Mothers Day, including boxes of chocolates, framed family photographs, pamperingproducts or handmade presents from the kids. Millions of Mothers Day cards are also sent every year, whether delivered by hand orposted home by those who cant make it to spend the day with their beloved mums. But the other thing that many mothers reallyrelish about their special day is simply being able to relax while they are spoiled and looked after all day long.

Importance of parents in our Life

    Warmth in Parent-child Relationships

The warmth that parents bring to their childrens lives starts at infancy. Moms and dads of young children shower their kids with baby-talk and

physical touch. These behaviors show the child that others are sensitive of their needs and that parents can be relied on for emotional

responsiveness. As a child grows older, he finds warmth in the parent-child relationship in other ways, specifically in receiving the fulfillment of

his emotional needs, whether they be play or intimate conversation. Warmth in parenting can lead to a cooperative child, who is well-developedsocially and emotionally.

    Promoting Independence

As ironic as it may sound, it is parents who are take the lead in teaching their children not to rely on their parents. Indeed, much of being a parent

is teaching a child to do things for herself, from using the toilet to driving a car. One important part of this aspect of the parent-child relationship

is disciplining children, which often is a way of keeping children on track in their own initiatives. Setting limits, such as restricting the amount oftelevision time per day, helps children stay focused on their own responsibilities, such as finishing homework. Without parents, the growing up

phase of childhood would decrease in speed.

    Teaching

From early childhood, the home becomes a school. To parents of older children, this is obvious, as after dinner the dinner table might become the

family study table. However, parents roles in educating young children start as early as the toddler years. Parentssimultaneously educate their

children while they strengthen the parent-child attachment. For example, reading books to your child will strengthen her linguistic development, playing active games with your child will improve her motor skill development and finishing puzzles with your child will enhance her cognitive

development. Young children -- and even parents -- might mistakenly believe they are just spending quality time with family when they are

    actually developing useful life skills.

The Importance of Mom and Dad

Moms and dads play different roles in the development of a child. The differences can be roughly summed up in the following way: Moms are

protectors and educators; dads are life coaches and counselors. Moms act as a safe base on which children can rely; they teach their children notto be afraid of new surroundings. Moreover, as moms tend to spend more time engaging in low-intensity activities, such as reading and game-

playing, with their children, children begin to see mothers as teachers. The fathers role in a childs development has traditionally been

underestimated. According to researchers Ross Parke and Kevin MacDonaldand, authors of the article Parent-Child Physical Play, whichappeared in the journal Sex Roles, fathers play an integral role in the emotional and social development of children. Father-child interaction tends

to be more intense, and through their shared activities children learn how to express and control their emotions with their fathers. By working

together, mothers and fathers help their children develop their skills across the spectrum

To make a commitment for the rest of your life to your child(ren). To protect them for as long as they need it. Be there for them through good and bad.

Love them, but don't spoil them. They have to be responsible for their actions. Teach them wisely about being polite, respect for others and

themselves. Take time out of your busy week to have fun with them. Teach them things throughout their life while living at home. Tell them stories

about you growing up (the funnier the better.) Teach them to obey rules around the house to prepare them for the future. When they have no

confidence, built their confidence up. Teach them that as long as they've tried their very best they are never a loser. Teach them how to treat a lady.

Give them a good solid background of Sunday School (they can choose their own religious beliefs when they are adults. Religion (whatever yours is)gives a good solid base for growing up. Teach them about nature and to respect it. Teach them to have compassion and not to label people quickly.

Know that your child(ren) will want to try their independence and be a pain in the butt at times. Know when to let your children go and become

    independent.

There are so many more things, but I think you can understand what I am saying. Parenthood can be difficult at best and parents don't have an

instruction book given to them to raise their children so mistakes will be made. There are always those magic words, "I was wrong, and I'm sorry." As

long as parents try their very best to bring their children up then they have done themselves proud and have brought up a strong and confident

    child(ren.)

Never lose your temper before your child(ren) as they are young and by losing your temper, you may give an impact, no matter if it's small or big, to

your child(ren). You can try to talk to them, even if they're still young, they can feel your frustration and that will scare them. No matter how long this list

is, trying your best to give your child(ren) a happy childhood is the main role of a parent

Parents are very important to a childs life. They influence children in many ways. Including how they act, talk, walk, and t he way they act around other

people. Even when the children grow up into adults, they still adapt some things that the parents do. The reason that even when kids grow up to be

adults, they still adapt things from their parents is because they need to grow on something. Moreover, if they have kids of their own they are going to go

to their mother and ask her how she raised them. Even now, the younger generation always looks up to the older generation for advice on their own kids.

Without parents, we wouldnt know how to grow up and raise our own kids. Even animals need parents; a calfneeds its mother just like a human needs

his. I would like to use this platform to thank my parents to make me what I am today!!! Further Id like to thank God for gi ving me such wonderfulparents!!

How we see reality defines who we arehow we understand and make our way in

the world. The lenses through which we see are formed in early childhood as we

become part of the story of a family and community. Thus parents (or those who act

in their stead) play a critical role in shaping a childs lens by the stories they tell and

  • 8/12/2019 Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss

    5/6

    indwell.

    What is a lens?

A lens refracts light in order to help us see. Those who wear contact lenses or glasses

know that the shape of those lenses is critically important to their perception of

reality. For example, if my wife takes out her contacts and doesn't have her glasses

handy, she can't see anything clearly. The lenses help her to perceive the world

clearly, so that she can make her way safely through it.

Early childhood is the time during which a child's "lens" develops. Through

interaction with the world and his environment, he learns to make sense of what is

going on around him. He learns to see. Since the way that one sees and understands

the world is dramatically influenced by parents, the importance of early childhood is

hard to overestimate. Consider two children born in the Mississippi in 1954. One,

white, is taught by his parents that black people are inferior and dangerous. The

other, black, is taught by her parents to love those who hate her, and to do good to

those who mistreat her. In 1960, both enter William Franz elementary school. Or

more precisely, the girl does, and the white boy (like all his peers and their parents)

goes each day to jeer, taunt and rage at the little six year old girl walking into the

school. Each child's lenses have been profoundly shaped by his or her parents. One

of those students, Ruby Bridges, changed American history; and it could

notand would nothave happened if her parents had cultivated a different "lens."

When a baby comes to this world, the first men they meet are his/her parents. They teach him how to walk, how to eat, provide their loves and

encouragement to the child without hesitate. It is the parents who company us the whole life and always stands behind us, as well as educates us

    most.

We almost spend the whole childhood with our parents. Before we can remember, it is parents who teach how to cry, how to laugh, how to speak, as

well as how to walk. They give us the skills to survive.

A bit later, when we can say "mama" and "papa", they are the examples we follow, the way they talk and say, in certain degrees, we just follow their

suits when we grow up. That is to say, as parents, they set the examples for their children in the attitudes to solve problems and toward the difficulties,

affect them they do to the similar situation in the future. Also, parents provide the environment for their children to grow up, if this environment is warm

and happy, obviously, a kind and generous child is the inevitable result.

Image that when you are in trouble, who will be the person you will turn to? Friends, teachers, or parents, etc.? Indeed, many prefer to turn to friends or

teacher, generally, most of them prefer to go back home, because our parents are our closest friends in our lifetime. They will open their aims,

embrace us and encourage us when we are in deep. Besides, what is more important is that they will advice us how to deal with this hard situation with

their own experience and tell us what can we learn from it to avoid the similar one happening again.

To sum up, from the parents, we can learn things far more than we can expected, they are the best teachers for the children in the world.

A person is reborn in the form of child . Children are second life for parents , in a way extension of their present life . Children may be more smarter than parents

but parents are older & wiser . Yes , when children have given a go by to words like , duty, respect , care parents have turned to dictatorial behaviour because

behaviour of children hurts them to their core . Its not far , when you will be facing the same issue ,which ur father is facing , you will not agree but time will tell

what kind of parent you turn out

How many of us are treating our aged parents with love and affection, may be minority. Its only in the real life, a mother or father or both are held

in great esteem. But I guess, they are treated badly in majority of the household. They are like burden to their children. How unfortunate are those

parents who could not be taken care of by the children.

The status of parents is supreme and is said that heaven lies under the feet of your parents. Treat them with all kindness and take care of them

particularly when they are old. Never speak to them in loud voice and never argue with them. Accept their advice and do not ill treat them. God

says even a smile at your mother or father will ensure a beautiful house in the Heaven. If you just smile, God will shower you with a place in Jannat

(Heaven) and if you take care of them in their old age, God may shower all the bounties. Readers should take a cue from it and treat your parents

with all grace and kindness that is required at the old age. Never nag them or ill treat them in front of your wife or children, it will have negative

effect on them and will hurt them most. The children today, may become parents tomorrow and old age is all likely to befall on them too. Let

there be empathy, and what will happen if our children treat us in the same way as we treated our parents.

Take the blessings of the old aged parents, God is sure to honour such children who treat their parents with kindness. If you are ill treating them,

please take a leaf out of this article and immediately apologize to your parents for what at all you did to them and hereafter treat them with

kindness. After all how long they will be alive to enjoy your company. Friends, take it from me, once they are gone, they will never come

    back....It's real

As a child ventures out and experiences the world around him, several influencing factors help shape him into the person he will eventuallybecome. Thankfully, parents still sit at the top of the list of the important and powerful role models in a childs life. As a parent, you have a few

key advantages that other role models and environmental factors do not have.

    Trust

Since your child came into this world, he has entrusted you to meet his basic needs. Feeding, changing and nurturing him during his early days

have all helped establish a foundation of trust, safety and security between the two of you. As a result, your child will look up to you. He believesthat you will encourage him and show him the correct way to approach the world. He will count on you to show him which situations, actions and

    behaviors are appropriate and safe.

    The Learning Process

Young children mimic what they see. Mimicry is part of how children master certain skills. If your child sees you doing something or acting acertain way, he is bound to try to do the same. For instance, if he sees you eating healthy foods, he will do the same. When a parent is a smoker,

the child might hold up a pencil and pretend he is doing the same. For this reason, you should be conscious of which behaviors you exhibit inyour daily life, especially when your child is present.

    Quantity of Time

In most cases, especially during the younger years, children are around their parents more than they are around any other per son. The quantity oftime you spend with your child influences how and what he learns, since you are dictating his exposure to the world. When he learns from a

positive role model, this cuts down on the time that he would need to spend learning from other influencing factors. For example, if you are a

stay-at-home parent, chances are that he will adopt your mannerisms and look up to you more than he would look up to a person he does not seeas often, such as a grandparent.

    Youre Real

Superheroes, cartoon characters or any other fictitious people that your child looks up to are, well, not real. You, on the other hand, are real. It is

normal for a child to idealize superheroes and the like, but when it comes down to it, the child can relate to you more because you live in this

world. As a parent, you make mistakes and deal with real-life situations. Instead of covering up that you have made mistakes, you have an ideal

opportunity to show your child how to effectively use problem-solving skills, learn from mistakes and how to communicate effectively.
