Anyone who has ever planned a wedding or another big celebration knows the important role seating arrangements can take on. The head-table and other seats of honor indicate who the most distinguished people are at the banquet. Playing with this metaphor, Jesus teaches us a great lesson: in the kingdom of God, the humble, the poor and the needy are the ones who hold these honored places. Through his life, Death and Resurrection, Christ invites us to the great heavenly banquet table, and in doing so, calls each of us to humility. A humble person recognizes his or her limitations, weakness, and poverty before God. Humility, though, is far from despair: along with a sense of finitude comes the recognition of God’s grace in our lives abundantly meeting our needs. To assume the place of honor is to miss the opportunity of letting God’s Spirit animate our lives and lead us beyond our selfish ambitions.
■ First Reading: We might think of today’s readings as consisting of several independent sayings. The first is concerned with humility (verses 17-18). Sirach’s wisdom is rooted in life experience: no one likes to be around an arrogant person who is into self-exaltation. Verse 20 has to do with knowing one’s place in the larger scheme of things and coming to a sense of awe, mystery and humble reverence. Verse 27 encourages an active search of wisdom with the help of sages and proverbs. Verse 29 makes an interesting parallel between water putting out a fire and almsgiving atoning for sin.
■ Responsorial Psalm 68: Today’s antiphon with its focus on the poor picks up on the last line of the First Reading. Psalm 68 is a hymn of praise. The second stanza focuses on God’s providential care for the poor. The “needy” of the last stanza refers to all God’s people.
■ Second Reading: Today’s text from Hebrews contrasts Israel’s experience of God on Mount Sinai with our experience of God on Mount Zion in the heavenly Jerusalem. The reading invites us to think about when and how we approach the heavenly Mount Zion. Take note of all those gathered there with God and Jesus.
■ The Gospel: Today’s Gospel compliments the First Reading with the exhortation to concern for the poor and mention of seeking wisdom through the advice of the Wise Person. The reference to the resurrection of the righteous provides a link to the Second Reading as well. Jesus is very clear on what is expected of those who want to enter into the new covenant and be counted among the righteous.

SUNDAY CHUCKLE Little Austin was in church one Sunday with his mother, when he started to feel sick. “Mommy,” he said “Can we leave now?” “No” she replied. “Well I think I have to throw up!” “Then go out the front door and behind the church and throw up in a bush.” After about sixty seconds, Austin returned to his seat. “Did you throw up?” Mom asked. “Yes.” “How could you have gone all the way to the back of the church so quickly?” “I didn’t have to. There’s a box next to the front door that says ‘For The Sick’.”

HOLY NAME SOCIETY Weekly Message
Facts About Jesus Jesus made his living as a carpenter with hammer, wood, and nails. Jesus was killed by Romans with a hammer, wood and nails. In 1 Peter 5:8, St. Peter says that the devil is a roaring lion and wants to eat us. In John 6:53-58, Jesus says that in order to be saved we have to eat His flesh and drink His blood. At the tower of Babel, God confused their language so that people could not understand each other anymore. The tower to heaven that Nimrod was trying to build was abandoned (Genesis 11:7-8). And the people were all scattered across the world. On Pentecost Sunday, the languages were unconfused by God, so that people of different tongues could all understand each other. Peter converted 3,000 because of this (Acts 2:6, 41).
Cornerstone Corner
As we all get to know our new Holy Father Pope Francis, it’s useful to
listen to what he has to say. Each week, we would like to present to you some of his quotes:
“When one does not profess Jesus Christ, one professes the worldliness of the devil.” “Jesus on the cross feels the whole weight of the evil, and with the force of God’s love he conquers it, he defeats it with his resurrection. This is the good that Jesus does for all of us upon his throne. Christ’s cross embraced with love does not lead to sadness, but to joy! It leads to the joy of being saved and of doing a little of what he did that day of his death.” “We need to avoid the spiritual sickness of a church that is wrapped up in its own world: when a church becomes like this, it grows sick. It is true that reaching out implies the risk of accidents happening, as they would to any ordinary man or woman. But if the church stays wrapped up in itself, it will age. And if I choose between a wounded church that goes out and a sick, withdrawn church, I would definitely choose the first one.”
-Pope Francis
