PARISH INFORMATION Third Sunday of Lent JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Pope Francis wants “Twenty-four Hours for the Lord,” around-the-clock availability of the sacrament of reconciliation, implemented worldwide this Friday and Saturday. Celebrated with his oft-recommended “tenderness,” the sacrament is “a source of true interior peace,” says Francis, enabling people “to touch the grandeur of God’s m e r c y w i t h t h e i r o w n hands” (Misericordiae Vultus, 17). In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus warns us against judging others. Focus instead, Jesus says, on deepening—or restoring—our own relationship with God, for during this Lenten springtime that Master Gardener can use even life’s manure (the parable’s “fertilizer”) to coax fresh fruit from a tree that seems hopelessly barren—us! Parishes preparing catechumens may choose John’s Gospel, which likewise cautions against judging. Imagine what the Samaritan woman’s lifelong neighbors thought of her multiple relationships. But by discovering Jesus, then sharing her good news—and Jesus—with those very neighbors, she whom they had probably judged quite sinful became instead their evangelist and “missionary of mercy.” —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. St. Dominic Savio He is the patron saint of our Parish. He is a saint at nearly fifteen years of age. He was educated by St. John Bosco at the Oratory of St. Francis de Sales. For St. Dominic Savio, holiness consists of always being cheerful and of doing one’s ordinary duties, extraordinarily well. His Feast Day is on May 6.

—Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. WARNING! Not all churches that use the words “Catholic” or “Roman Catholic” in their tle are in communion with the Holy Father or under the jurisdic on of the local Roman Catholic Archbishop of Los Angeles. Though lawfully calling themselves “Catholic” under secular law, some of these churches have broken away from the Church for various reasons. It is not lawful for Roman Catholics to receive sacraments in these churches, and one does not fulfill one’s obliga ons by a ending their services. Furthermore, the sacraments received would, in most instances, be invalid. Our Lady of Guadalupe on Carson Street in the City of Carson, Holy Trinity on Woodruff Avenue in Long Beach and St. Francis in Bell Gardens are churches located within the San Pedro Region that fall within this category and are not a Roman Catholic Church. If you have reason to doubt the authen city of any church calling itself “Catholic,” please contact the Archdiocesan Catholic Center at (213) 637-7000 for verifica on.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK, EVERYBODY.

¡ADVERTENCIA!

HERE AND THERE

Today and the next two Sundays, the Elect along with the congregation will participate in three Scrutinies What are the Scrutinies? The Scrutinies are Rites celebrated to help deliver the elect from the power of sin and Satan, to protect them against temptation, and to give them strength in Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The Rites of Scrutiny are meant to uncover, and then heal, all that is weak, defective, or sinful in the elects’ hearts and to bring out through repentance all that is upright, strong, and good. Three Scrutinies are celebrated in the parish community on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent, after the homily. The Scripture readings for the Scrutinies are the Gospel story of the Samaritan woman at the well for the 1st Scrutiny, the Gospel story of the healing of the man born blind for the 2nd Scrutiny, and the Gospel story of the raising of Lazarus for the 3rd Scrutiny. It is God’s word, living and active, that actually “does” the scrutinizing. Following the proclamation of the Gospel and homily the Elect, along with their godparents are called forward and all pray in silence for some time. Then the intercessions developed for the Elect are recited. Next a series of 3 prayers are prayed: a prayer addressed to God the creator, the laying on of hands and a prayer addressed to the Lord Jesus. The celebrations of the three Scrutinies are at the core of the Lenten journey of conversion for not only the Elect, but for the entire parish who walks with them. The Scrutinies also remind the whole parish community of the need to reflect on their own sins and the need for God’s help. How might the Scrutinies of the RCIA process help the parish as a whole? The universal Church hears the stories of the Samaritan woman, the man born blind, and the raising of Lazarus. These readings were chosen to be the driving force of prayerful introspection, surrender, and conversion. They offer powerful images of surrender, sin, conversion, faith, and healing. In our faith journey with those seeking Baptism, we must stir our souls, as if they were dying campfires, to expose any parts of ourselves that have not been purified by the burning love of the Holy Spirit. We are challenged with the Samaritan woman at the well when we thirst for the Lord, who knows what we need and provides it; we beg, with the man born blind, to see Jesus, who is the light and gives us sight; and finally we lie with Lazarus within the tomb of oblivion and death, built with the stones of our own sins, until Jesus reaches out his hand and pulls us from the pit.
