Nutrition Month Celebration 2014 gears students

towards disaster preparedness

“Prepare for Calamities: Anticipate Hunger and Malnutrition” was the theme of South Mansfield College

(SMC) Nutrition Month Celebration 2014. The celebration focused on how each student can prepare in his or her

own little way how to be ready during calamities. It also focused on how to deal with hunger and malnutrition in

case of calamities. It is an essential thing for students to be educated and prepared with a number of natural

calamities, such as Typhoon Glenda, hitting the country recently.

The culminating activity was held last July 30,

2014 with different activities held simultaneously in the

school. Cute little fruits were seen around the campus

as preschool pupils wore their fruit costumes such as

orange, grapes, and others. In the Grade School

Division, pupils had fun making fruit shakes and

preparing no meat sandwiches. The High School

Division, on the other hand, had students actively

presenting their prepared Nutri-Rap which they have

been practicing for the whole month of July. At the end

of the activity, Grade 9-Integrity claimed the honor of

being champion followed by Grade 8-Commitment as

first runner-up. Everybody enjoyed the presentation and

had fun as fruits and vegetables. Both Grade School

and High School students enjoyed the 30-minute

exercise care of the PAG Society. It was indeed a great

way to learn healthy living!

AN EVENING WITH THEIR SCHOOL OF CHOICE

Last July 25,2014, South Mansfield College held its annual “Evening with Parents.” The event is where SMC students’ parents are invited to come to school to experience what it is like to be a student in SMC.

The program started with an orientation led by Ms. Arlene Sta. Maria, the Deputy Principal. It was followed by the main event of the night which is entering a real classroom scenario. The group was divided into four: Early Childhood Education, Grade School, and High School. The activity showcased the usual class scenario in the subjects of English, Science, Social Studies and Mathematics. Twenty minutes were allotted for each subject and the assigned teachers prepared demonstration classes and an array of activities.

After the teaching demonstrations, the parents, together with the faculty, savored the prepared snacks. It was also the moment when the parents shared their feedback and experiences during the demonstration.

Indeed, it was a night of fun and success. Parents were truly proud of enrolling their child at South Mansfield College, their school of choice.

-Ms. Arianne Mae B. Camba

Making Learning Fun Your ch i ld has been hardwired with a desire to learn. Al l you have to do is f igure out how to f l ip the switch. Here

are a few ideas.

1. Become a walking advertisement for the joy of learning. The exper ts agree that one of the most ef fect ive

ways of encouraging a love of learn ing is to model that very same excitement yoursel f . Try to create “a cul ture of

learning” in the home of showing rather that tel l ing your kids that learn ing is excit ing. Let them catch you reading

the newspaper at the breakfast tab le or tun ing into a TV documentary on a topic of part icular interest to you.

2. Help your child to see the relevance of what he’s learning in school. Show them the real wor ld re levance

of what they’re learning at school—connections that may not be immediate ly obvious to them. The more k ids see

such connect ions between what they are learn ing in the c lassroom and what they are exper iencing in rea l l i fe , the

more meaningfu l the ir schoolwork wi l l be, and the more motivated they wi l l be to do their homework and to focus

in c lass. In other words, geometry becomes a whole lot more in terest ing once your chi ld f inds out that engineers

use those abstract mathemat ical pr inciples whi le designing amusement parks.

3. Treat learning like a game. Organize a mul t igenerat ional spel l ing bee. Chal lenge your k ids to use the family

“word of the week” at least once a day. Or toss some math bra inteasers the ir way. Hint: They’l l be more l ikely to

buy into the game i f there’s some sor t of pr ize involved - a half-hour bedt ime extension, or contro l of the remote

contro l.
