RANDOM QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

OCTOBER 29, 2017

In the past week a number of people have asked me several questions about Catholic

practice that really surprised me. Some of these questions I have alluded to and re-

sponded before, but I thought it might be a good idea to give it another shot. Let me

share some of these and a few others that have occurred to me.

We are married outside the Catholic Church. Will the Church baptize our chil-dren? Absolutely, as long as there is a probable hope that the children will be raised in

the Catholic faith. The Church does not punish children because their parents did not

comply with the marriage laws of the Church. It is very sad that sometimes couples do

not even make the effort because they erroneously believe that the Church prohibits such

baptisms.

I was raised a Catholic and would like my marriage to be recognized by the Catho-

lic Church. The problem is I want to be married at a venue and not in a church. Is

there any way I can be married at a venue and still have my marriage recognized by the Church? The answer is it all depends on whether or not your

fiance (or fiancee) was ever validly baptized. If your prospective spouse is a non-

baptized person, the Catholic Church will grant permission for the marriage to take

place outside a church edifice. If, however, your future husband or wife is baptized val-

idly (even in a non-Catholic religion) the marriage may not take place in a venue.

Here's a very surprising question. At least I found it to be such. Does the Catholic

Church allow a Catholic to marry a non-Catholic? Yes. This is a routine matter and

the priest simply applies to the Bishop for the required dispensation or permission. It is

readily given. The Catholic party must simply make a commitment to try to have any

children baptized and reared as Catholics. The non-Catholic does not need to do any-

thing. The Catholic may sign the pledge or simply make the promise orally.

I was baptized a Catholic and even made my First Holy Communion, but I never

got around to being confirmed. Can I still be married in the Catholic Church? The

answer is yes—even if you didn't make first Communion. The Church says that you

should be confirmed at the time of marriage, but if you are not you should try to be con-

firmed before the wedding. If for some reason or another you are not, the celebration of

the marriage is still allowed. By the way, any adult who is not confirmed may call the

rectory and make an appointment with a priest. He will be glad to help you, suggest ap-

propriate instruction, and can obtain a special faculty from the Bishop to confirm you at

a mutually convenient time. In our own Diocese of Rockville Centre customarily the

Bishop grants priests the authority to confirm adults on either the Vigil of Pentecost or

Pentecost Sunday itself.

Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish.

Next weekend’s second collection is for the Catholic Ministries Appeal.

I was married outside the Catholic Church. I know I can have a ceremony and the priest will

marry us in Church. The problem is my husband or wife refuses to go in front of a priest for a

new ceremony. Is there anything I can do? Absolutely. Go to see a priest. The Church has a spe-

cial procedure for cases just like this. We will be so glad to help you.

Finally the question of questions: I am a divorced Catholic and have not remarried outside the

Church and am not involved in any other romantic relationship. I would like to receive Holy

Communion. May I? Yes, you are more than welcome to receive Our Lord. The mere fact of di-

vorce does not stop you from going to Communion.

Many people have such questions and many others. I make this appeal. Please ask a priest. Do not

rely on information from your neighbors or friends—often enough, sad to say, it is misinformation.

If it is that important, ask the priest. We are here to help. We want our people to share in the sacra-

mental life of the Church.

In Jesus and Mary,

Monsignor James M. McDonald

LITURGY CORNER Baltimore Catechism Lesson 15, dealing with the Two Great Commandments.

*189. What are the two great commandments that contain the whole law of God?

The two great commandments that contain the whole law of God are:

first, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart and with thy whole soul, and

with thy whole mind, and with thy whole strength;

second, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

*190. What must we do to love God, our neighbor, and ourselves?

To love God, our neighbor, and ourselves we must keep the commandments of God and the Church, and perform

the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.

*191. What are the chief corporal works of mercy?

The chief corporal works of mercy are seven: to feed the hungry, to give drink to the thirsty, to clothe the naked, to

visit the imprisoned, to shelter the homeless, to visit the sick, and to bury the dead.

*192. What are the chief spiritual works of mercy?

The chief spiritual works of mercy are seven: to admonish the sinner, to instruct the ignorant, to counsel the doubt-

ful, to comfort the sorrowful, to bear wrongs patiently, to forgive all injuries, to pray for the living and the dead.

193. Is every one obliged to perform the works of mercy?

Every one is obliged to perform the works of mercy, according to his own ability, and the need of his neighbor.

194. Are all the ordinary deeds done every day to relieve the corporal or spiritual needs of others true works

of mercy?

All the ordinary deeds done every day to relieve the corporal or spiritual needs of others are true works of mercy, if

done in the name of Christ.

*195. Which are the commandments of God?

The commandments of God are these the:

I am the Lord thy God; thou shalt not have strange gods before me.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.

Remember thou keep holy the Lord’s day.

Honor thy father and thy mother.

Thou shalt not kill.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Thou shalt not steal.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s goods.

196. Should we be satisfied merely to keep the commandments of God?

We should not be satisfied merely to keep the commandments of God, but should always be ready to do good deeds,

even when they are not commanded.

If we truly understand the two great commandments, and obey them, we will never break any of the ten command-

ments of God. That involves loving ourselves, too, as we are made in the image of God and are worth that. If we do

not love ourselves, we cannot love anyone else, God or neighbor. And in case we ever wonder who is our neighbor,

or how we are to go beyond the commandments and perform good deeds, pick up your bible and reread Luke 10:25-

37 (the Good Samaritan).

FOCUS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Ban on Farmers Over Their Marriage Views is Overturned

A federal judge ruled in mid-September that the Catholic Michigan farmers who were banned from selling

their produce at a farmers market because of their religious beliefs about marriage, may resume selling their

goods. East Lansing officials had banned the farmers from participating in the 2017 Farmers Market, (even

though this farm had sold their organic fruits there for 7 years), when they learned the farm would resume

hosting weddings for unions between "one man and one woman."

"Our faith and beliefs on marriage and hosting weddings at our home in our backyard of our farm have noth-

ing to do with the city of East Lansing," said Farmer Steve Tennes. "Nor does it have anything to do with

the produce that we sell to the people that attend the farmers markets who are from all backgrounds and all

beliefs."

"My wife Bridget and I volunteered to serve our country in the military to protect freedom," Tennes said,

"and that is why we feel we have to fight for freedom now whether its Muslims', Jews', or Christians' right to

believe and live out their beliefs." "The government shouldn't be treating some people worse than others

because they have different thoughts and ideas."

"All Steve wants to do is sell his food to anyone who wants to buy it, but the city isn't letting him," said Alli-

ance Defending Freedom in June. "People of faith should be free to live and work according to their deeply

held beliefs without fear of losing their livelihood. If the government can shut down a family farmer just

because of the religious views he expresses on Facebook - by denying him a license to do business and serve

fresh produce to all people - then no American is free."

(lifesitenews.com, 9/15/17; law 360.com; washingtontimes.com, 6/1/17)

"When you see a successful business, someone once made a courageous decision." Peter F. Drucker,

consultant and author
