OLLIE SHORE
Winner, Captain’s Weekend With Mr. Captain, Derek Worthington
Captain’s Weekend, 14th
/ 15th
July 2012
Derek Worthington, our Captain, is a phlegmatic sort of chap but even his phlegm was becoming disturbed as
the rain poured ceaselessly before the weekend of the year. A slight hiatus on the Thursday and Friday gave the
course some chance to recover, though it has to be said that, even on Friday, the machines were sliding down the
slopes. But the decision was taken and the tournament was on. The tumultuous cloud burst on the Friday
evening was totally ignored as a great crowd turned up to watch the amazing Geoff Swain. BUT.............
Saturday dawned fine and fair and the Greens’ staff performed wonders to get the course ready. Derek had
stocked up on “proper” champagne to greet every one of the players and by 9 a.m. he was very mellow indeed as
play progressed.
Every player will have his own tales of hope and misadventure. Your editor heard several!! Mark Worsley
enjoyed a two – at the 14th
! Chris Broster lost 7 balls on the Saturday. Pete Wagstaff had an 11on the 9th
. Whilst
Bob Blundell did his guard duty on the 14th
playing partner, Dave Loughman, managed to smash his drive into
the chicken wire behind which he was standing; not once but twice. In fact Dave was 7 off the tee. Mr. Captain
spoke to Craig Oakes as he entered his score on to the computer, “Is it a winning score?” “No,” Craig replied,
“It’s a suicide score.” At the Halfway House Colin Davies’s observation of his round thus far was “steady
rubbish!” Pete Kimber had obviously visited Chester Zoo to get some skin from the giraffes to make his trousers
whilst Duncan Challen had visited the Opera House to borrow Joseph’s Amazing Technicoloured Dream
trousers.
Geoff Swain – Golf Trick Shot Champion at Romiley
Those members who braved the torrential rains of the Friday evening before Captain’s Weekend were
rewarded with an unforgettable display from World Trick Shot Champion, Geoff Swain. Despite the appalling
conditions, there was a good turnout to watch Geoff run through some of his repertoire of astonishing shots,
using a variety of equipment which is not found in the standard bag. When assistance was needed, there was an
eager group of volunteers (?) ready to help out. Steve Cleary, in particular, was shown a different way of
addressing the ball which seemed effective and might have served him well, had he dared to use it over the
weekend, while Andy Reed, Paul Wagstaff and Ben Thompson managed a cumulative -2 feet in the high tee
challenge.
Geoff’s timing and co-ordination stood out again and again. (If you weren’t there, get someone to tell you about
the ‘bounce off the tile’ trick) He remained cheerful and entertaining, despite the monsoon conditions and
seems to have enjoyed the evening, as this extract from his Twitter page testifies …. A wet wonderful night
@romileygc, great turnout, good fun. All-in-all, it was a very enjoyable curtain-raiser to the weekend.

A delighted and jubilant Shore family share Ollie’s success
And so a marvellous weekend came to pass and the
funniest moment for Mr. Captain was the
remarkable “slices” from Steve Cleary under the
guidance of Geoff Swain. But the performance of the
weekend came from Ollie Shore. His dad, Brent
Shore, was thrilled until Ollie, in his acceptance
speech said,” Dad. I’m on the board before you.”
To put Ollie’s win in perspective, how many realised
that he spent Friday on the course as part of the
Greens Staff, then served behind the bar til late, was
at the club at 6 a.m. to help set the course, play his
round, change then serve behind the bar til very,
very late, then back at the course for 6 a.m. to get the
course ready then go and play his round of golf.
Astonishing.
Your editor caught up with him at the 10th
on the Sunday. “I’m really going for it,” said Ollie and
then thrashed the ball straight down the middle. He went for it and got it.

EVENING MIXED FOURSOMES & YELLOW BALL COMP. SUNDAY 30TH
JUNE 2012
Although the UK has now been reduced to a series of small islands in the North Sea , it actually didn’t rain on the
evening of 30 June and the mixed comp went off as planned, although each team carried a small inflatable dinghy
just in case.
Format was best two to score with a separate yellow ball comp.
Last time we had a yellow ball comp. it lasted for exactly 2 shots when the author of this article shanked it into
the greens’ sheds! Amazingly this time we kept it to the end. We didn’t win anything, but then it’s the taking part
that matters isn’t it? No it’s not; it’s getting the dosh that matters!
Winners - Alan & Pauline Whitehead and Sandra and Brian Davison.
Second were Mr President and Barbara Leith and the Lady Captain with Trevor Wright. In 3rd
place were Alison
and Andy Reed along with John Park and Janet Worthington, who also won the yellow ball competition.
After the match we retired to the bar and then enjoyed a delicious meal provided by Mrs Hall and Co.
The next evening mixed will be played on 28th
July. (Providing we still have a golf course and not a boating lake.)

LADIES’ 1ST EXCHANGE DAY - TURTON GOLF CLUB
WEDNESDAY 20TH JUNE 2012
On a sunny afternoon, sandwiched between many rainy ones, the ladies ventured north, onwards and upwards, to
Turton Golf Club on their first exchange day. There was a warm and friendly northern welcome waiting but it was
with trepidation that they teed off across the gully and up the first of lots more hills to the quick green.
The second tee shot was over a cliff edge to a smallish green and on the third tee the spotter had to climb a ladder so
that the ball could be watched rolling yards and yards, right into the valley below if the shot happened to be not just
perfect. And so it went on for 18 holes. A challenging course, not for the faint hearted, weary or even slightly
infirm, and certainly not a course for a rainy or windy day, but all who participated thoroughly enjoyed the day and
the magnificent scenery, if they weren’t too busy looking for their ball which had rolled out of sight!
The lovely meal was served in the quaint and homely old clubhouse in a traditional feel room which could have been
anyone’s large lounge. The atmosphere was buzzing with lots of banter and hilarity, especially from the table where
the winners were sitting - Diane Houghton, Sandra Hewitt and Pauline Walker with a score of 69 points - nothing to
do with the wine or the G&T on the terrace in the sun, so we’re told. In second place, just pipped at the post, were
Lynn Schofield, Lady Vice Captain & Jane Hawke with 68 points. A super day out; roll on Ladies’ Exchange Day
No. 2 at Heswall in August.

obviously done their research well.

Maurice Hall – 90
25th July 2012.....What a day to remember for Maurice Hall and to celebrate his 90th birthday when Geoff Fisher
took him on a mystery trip to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, the home of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
Geoff had arranged and organised a personalised conducted tour for Maurice to see up close all the planes in this
Flight which includes Spitfires, Hurricanes and the only flying Lancaster in Europe and its latest acquisition a C47
Dakota which saw action in the WWII. Maurice was a wireless operator and flew in Dakota's during his war time.
We were greeted at the visitors' centre by Squadron Leader Jamie Watson who was our guide for the day.
Squadron Leader Watson flies both the Lancaster and the Dakota for the Memorial Flight and Maurice was invited
for a complete tour of the Dakota inside and out, where he was able to sit in the cockpit for a photo shoot where he
regaled us with some of his exploits and showed us where he sat as a wireless operator. Maurice was also privileged
to view an engine test of the C47 Dakota, the sounds of which brought back many nostalgic memories for him.
The tour then took in the rest of the
flight and after refreshments Squadron
Leader Watson invited Maurice on board
the Lancaster, a privilege not offered to
many! Maurice was up for this and was
able to clamber through the fuselage up to
the wireless operator's position and Geoff
managed to get to the cockpit and take
photos for Maurice. Then after many
more photos and tales, Squadron Leader
Watson took us back to the visitors’
centre where Maurice was presented with
a copy of the 'BBMF' 2012 Year
Book. This has been signed by the pilots
of these historic aircraft and ended a
wonderful trip to RAF Coningsby for
Maurice.
As one last treat Maurice was taken to 'The Petwood Hotel'
in Woodall Spa where the 617 Squadron had its 'Officers
Mess'. This room has been kept intact since the war and is
full of memorabilia and history.
It has been a privilege to take Maurice on this visit for his
90th birthday treat. Happy 90th Birthday Maurice.

ROMILEY GOLF CLUB LADIES PALLETED OFF COACH
Our day had to be rearranged as we had missed our slot for
the trip on the Welsh Highland Railway from Porthmadog
to Caernarvon, so we had to do it in reverse. But the re-
organisation was handled superbly and, even though we
had three different coaches and drivers and we didn't get
home ‘til 10.20pm a little tired and weary, a great day was
had by all, and the big bonus was that the sun shone.
Anne Ludford, author
We set off in good spirits on Wednesday,
11th
July 2012 on our way to Wales for
what promised to be a lovely day out but an
hour into the journey, the coach was
involved in a crash with a lorry. Luckily no
one was hurt, but the main door was
damaged and wouldn't open and the
emergency exit was on the side of the
motorway and too high to jump down from
so there we were, a coach full of OAP’s
trapped on the bus!
After lots of telephone calls to get the day back on track,
it was decided that the driver would have to take us to a
garden centre nearby where they would get some
stepladders to get us off, but they didn't realise that
OAP's aren't quite as agile as the young driver and that
stepladders just were not viable. Then somebody from
the garden centre came up with the brilliant idea of
building a staircase out of pallets. After four or five
journeys back and forth, the fork lift truck driver put the
pallets in place and we escaped to the garden centre for a
well earned cup of coffee and a (by now desperate for
some) comfort break. I came off singing, “I won’t dance,
don’t ask me!”
John reminded us of his early days on the then fledgling Social Committee when someone had the temerity to
suggest that it would be perhaps a good idea to sell potato crisps behind the bar. This was met with a scathing
retort from one of the elder statesmen who fumed that it would reduce the Club to the level of a Honkytonk Bar.
Nobody knew just what he meant, but the sale of crisps was delayed for a few years.
John also had some sage words of advice for the Captain. In the unlikely event that the weather prevails for the
Captain’s Weekend and the course had to be closed, he should immediately ensure that the bar is also closed to
avoid possible bankruptcy.
Past Captains and Presidents Society Event – 11th
July
2012
One of the raisons d’être for this annual event is to ensure
that there is one day during their year of office when the
Captain and the President do not have to spend any money
when they are in the Club, and this year the Society was
proud to ensure that tradition continued when Derek
Worthington and Roger Whalley joined 26 past officers for
what turned out to be a curtailed event. The usual format is a
light lunch, followed by 18 holes of Stableford (from the
yellow tees because we are all getting a bit older) with a
black tie dinner in the evening. Despite the recent weather
relenting to provide a bright sunny afternoon, the course
remained closed so the lunch and golf were cancelled, but
happily the dinner went ahead as planned.
ing. John George,(pictured above) as
senior Captain present (1971/72)
and now a life member, hosted the
dinner and welcomed his former
Vice-Captain and nonagenarian,
Maurice Hall (pictured on the
right) who started the proceedings
with grace.
In his response Mr Captain thanked the Society on behalf of himself and
the President and noted that the cancellation of the golf had resulted in
some unexpected expenditure as Janet had used his now free afternoon to
whisk him off to Manchester where he had bought some new dresses and
shoes. We assumed they were for Janet but he did not make it entirely
clear.
The main part of the evening however was the presentation of the Trophy
for the golf. As the competition had not been played, the previous year’s
winner, Peter Wagstaff, retains the Trophy. Accepting the responsibility on
Angela’s behalf to keep it clean for a further 12 months, Peter jumped at
the opportunity to poke some gentle fun at the Manchester United
contingent, but then rather blotted his copybook by repeating the same joke
that he told last year. The worrying thing is that most of us didn’t
remember!

Lady Captain’s Days! Thursday, 19th
and 26th
July 2012
The morning started wet but, after a slightly delayed start, optimistic that
the forecasters were correct and the afternoon would be warm and sunny, the ladies
teed off on the day around which holidays are arranged, Lady Captain’s Day. But the
jet stream didn’t fly north as expected, it lingered - and how - over Stockport.
Wilmslow was dry and sunny all day; so near yet so far away!
Some ladies did manage to complete the round but most had to abandon. Many
tried to linger longer in the most popular place on the day, the halfway house, not
only for shelter but for cakes and cream scones and the friendly banter from Lady
Captain’s non-golfing friends, Ian and Shirley, who renewed old acquaintances and really enjoyed
for them a unique experience.
However, the competition abandoned did not mean that the day was a disaster; far from it. 27 ladies joined LadyCaptain
for afternoon tea served by Lady Vice Captain, Pam Cunnington and Teresa Hogg, and quite delicious it was too, thanks
to Heather. The remainder of the day went without a hitch with a super Greek-themed meal in the evening, again thanks
to Heather. Just a pity Heather couldn’t organise some Greek weather to go with it. Outside it was still bucketing down
but the dining room had a summery feel with the tables beautifully decorated in terracotta and mango by Julie Smith and
Andrew Worthington with lovely flower arrangement centrepieces which one lucky lady on each table was able to take
home. It was quite a glittery occasion as well as the delighted ladies opened their favour bag to discover a piece of
jewellery, which they all proceeded to wear straight away.
Lady Captain, Audrey, gave an emotional speech of thanks to all the ladies for their cards, gifts and good wishes for the
day, and thanks to those who played in the rain. LC smiled as usual throughout; some things just can’t be organised.
The competition went ahead the following week on a miraculously dried out course in 24 degrees, but Lady Captain
refused to allow ladies to say it was “too hot.”
With a quick rehash of the prizes for nearest the pins (week old half dead geraniums substituted by beautifully fresh
dahlias) the winner with a net 69, a terrific score, (CSS 76) was thrilled Astrid Ceelen (13 - now 11.2); second with 72
was Heather Denton (22 - now 21); and third with 74 was Janet Godfrey (21).
The best front 9 prize was won by Jane Hawke and the back 9 by Sandra Hewitt. Nearest the line on the 10th was won by
Lesley Williams (½ inch) and the putting prize by Liz Boycott. Nearest the pins were won by Heather Denton on the 2nd
and Janet Worthington on the 11th. The 9 hole prize was won by Marjorie Chandler.
Lady Captain: “Thank you ladies for a brilliant two days. Your good wishes and friendly banter kept me going. Looking
on the bright side, I had two Lady Captain’s Days, and I shall treasure the memories of both. Many thanks also to David,
my husband, for all his support and the excellent photos below; my friend David Lindley for supervising the putting
competition, twice; Ian and Shirley for manning the half way house with such enthusiasm; Heather - what would the
day have been like without Heather ; all the ladies for their cards and lovely gifts; Mr Captain and Janet for the beautiful
flowers; Mr Vice Captain and Sally for the Champagne; Mr President and Kate for the baby Guinness (don’t ask the
reason for that but it is appreciated); and to Martin and the greens staff who worked so hard in vain to make the course
playable on the first day.”
Audrey Jones, author
The ladies would like to thank Lady Captain for the lovely ball markers she gave us which were delightful and
included butterflies, ladybirds, champagne bottles, golf balls, hedgehogs and many more.
We would also like to thank her for the lovely gifts of a bracelet or necklace we all received at the evening dinner,
this was a very lively evening.
Many thanks Lady Captain, I bet you’re pleased you had two goes at it!!!!!

Greens v Ladies - Now it’s too hot!! 24th
July 2012
In soaring temperatures, with the course drying out before our very eyes, on 24th July the greens staff met the ladies
in their annual match for the Tractor Trophy. Umbrellas could still be seen across the fairways but this time as sun
shades, would you believe, to prevent the ladies from fainting in the heat.
The first match out was Greens Chairman, Peter Milnes (4), with Alex (6) against Irene Barrow and Anne Ludford
(both 17) but the ladies turned out to be no match for the low handicappers who were close to the pin in two on most
holes. In the next match Janet Godfrey and Barbara Leith were mesmerised by tall dark handsome Ollie Shore (10),
described by Janet as “awesome, poetry in motion,” still on top form from his Captain’s Weekend win. Ollie,
obviously using distraction tactics and disrupting the ladies’ concentration, and equally awesome Al (12), won the
match so the men had two in the bag.
In the third match Pam Cunnington and Val Mackinnon played Martin and Mike. The gentlemen tried to tell the
ladies they didn’t play very much, but the ladies were not convinced. It was nip and tuck to start with but then the
ladies did go ahead, helped by a tee shot from Pam on the 11th which was so close the men could almost taste their
drink at the bar afterwards.
With a broad grin Lady Captain accused the greens of arranging for the hollow tining machine to be brought in
specially on this day and to make more noise than usual. Lady Captain met the man and machine on so many greens
they were ready to exchange telephone numbers. Plus, all the ladies noticed that the red tees were either on or behind
the new tee blocks. Al said he couldn’t put them any further back - so he did try!
Unfortunately, the elusive Tractor Trophy didn’t actually make the photo shoot, it was locked in the cupboard, key
missing, with everyone too hot and tired to climb the stairs to even look at it, but it was retained, just, by the greens.
Everyone agreed it was a super match on a wonderful day, what golf is all about, and long may the tradition continue,
though for next year the ladies are already devising their own cunning plan - white blocks perhaps, and shots docked
for the winners?
Audrey Jones author
The last match out was Lady Captain
Audrey and Past Lady Captain
Pauline, playing against Steve and a
confused Gill Walker, member of the
Greens Committee, who at the
eleventh hour found herself batting for
the men. Steve and Gill were off to a
bad start going three down after three.
They managed to recover and go one
up, only to then lose another three and
lose the match on the 17th, but Steve
secretly enjoyed playing with his three
ladies and has already put his name
down for next year.
RGC Vets v Ashton Away Thursday 26th
July 2012
On Thursday, July 26th
Romiley Vets primed their Satnavs for
the short, but complex journey to Ashton. After one or two
hiccups, the team finally negotiated the final housing estate
challenge, and, all pairings complete, the match began. It was a
fine morning and the course looked in tip-top condition, the
greens being particularly good as 8 matches set off beneath the
impressive backdrop of Hartshead Pike.
Most matches were closely contested, with several being decided on the 18th
hole. Bob Blundell and Keith
Selby provided a typical example for Romiley – 3 up after 5 holes, but ultimately losing to a 10 foot putt on
the 18th
– decent Olympic sprinting form, but lacking the stamina for the marathon! The final result was also
close, with the home team edging it by 4 to 3 with one halved.
All – in - all, it was another very pleasant day, finished off with a good meal and a few brief words from the
Ashton chairman followed by an even briefer response by Romiley’s own Mike Wilson.

BELL CUP – HERE’S TO NEXT YEAR
The Bell Cup match was played at home against Bramhall Park on Friday 27th
July - it was a late afternoon tee off
and the weather was perfect for golf. We knew it was going to be a tough round as the Bramhall ladies had a
formidable line up, but as they say, “it’s what happens on the day”
Each match was really very close – we had wins from Denise Booth, Pauline Walker & Angela Wheeler & losses
after hard fought matches from Diane Houghton, Astrid Ceelen – loss on 21st hole & two losses on the 19
th hole by
Linda Moore & me. As disappointed as the team were to lose, everyone had played to their best ability and it
really was a case of who would make the first mistake in the very tight games. So the result was a loss to Romiley
by 4 /3. We had a good run & some brilliantly played matches, but on a positive note – next year we’ll be back.
Team: Denise Booth, Astrid Ceelen, Pauline Walker, Diane Houghton, Angela Wheeler, Linda Moore, Irene
Barrow
Special thanks to the trolley pushers – Jill Woolstencroft, Janet Worthington, Gill Walker, Maureen Marsden,
Lynn Schofield, Lady Captain & Anne Ludford.
I would like to thank Sandra Hewitt & Liz Wilde who also played in one of the matches and to everyone who
came & supported us and Heather who provided us with sandwiches, cakes for the home games & lots of chips on
Friday which were greatly appreciated, especially by the Bramhall ladies who thought they were “divine”.

Evening Mixed, Saturday 28th
July 2012
We had a fantastic turnout for this month’s competition with a record 11 teams taking part in a Texas Scramble.
OK, we all got a bit wet from some very heavy showers, but there was a good atmosphere during the meal that
followed and a big thank you goes to Heather and her team for looking after us so well, the steak pie and sticky
toffee pudding went down a treat !
June Levy, Linda Moore, Eric Jones and Martin Elly were first time entrants in the competition and celebrated this
by winning with a score of 30.4 points. Gordon and Jan Harman, together with Andy and Alison Reed, took second
place with 30.5 points and Lady Captain with her playing partners, Pam Cunnington, Trevor Wright and Mike
Andrew came third with 31.05 points.
Five teams had a “2” on their cards and the best of those came from Lady Captain’s team on the 5th
hole. Lady
Captain’s drive landed in the rough just off the front of the green and about forty feet short of the hole. Following
indifferent chip shots from his team mates, Trevor decided to use his putter and sank the ball in the hole much to
their delight. Sadly, there were no prizes for 2’s!
Our final competition will take place on Saturday 1st September and the format will be “stableford with a twist”.
The entry sheet will be on the notice board in the next week or so and we would ask teams to put their names down
as soon as possible as entry will be strictly limited to the given tee times to ensure everyone is in before dark.
Thank you to everyone for taking part, we really appreciate your support.
