Hello parents and guardians! We are nearing the end of Semester 1 of the 2018-2019 school year! So many great things happening in the classrooms of your students. We have the Thinking Classroom in math, a new way of thinking of math like mathematicians… research supports the collaborating and developing of mathematician skills to complete difficult tasks for future use in their post-secondary education and workforce. These are all skills beginning to develop in our Math students. We are also continuing to work on engagement in our core subjects... students are digging deeper into texts and making sense of the “Why”; they are working on their technological and communication skills; they are experiencing a larger perspective of thinking… I am excited where education is taking us…. focusing on the process rather than just the product!
A few notable events from November: Rosthern School Project: As you can see the construction crew is busy working daily. They are securing the foundation for our fabulous building. In the meantime a fundraising committee has been formed to help with the purchases of items such as: playground equipment, a garage for storage of outdoor equipment, and a school sign (in no specific order), all things not in the scope of the new build’s budget. Please contact Angel Wall if you wish to assist this group in any way. We truly appreciate everyone’s efforts to be able to provide for the best opportunity for your child’s education.
Cell Phones: The staff has implemented a plan to encourage your child to optimize their learning environment. In this plan we have asked that all cell phones be left in the student’s locker or pocket to help to encourage students to be ready to learn at the start of class and not be consistently distracted during their learning engagement. Our School Survey: This month our students completed the annual anonymous survey that helps the staff create goals and plans in order to make this the best learning space/environment as possible. Many of our professional development goals were developed from the student voice in this survey. For example, students expressed that we did not offer enough choice in their education… so RHS Staff worked to learn about the Inquiry process and how best to model the learning.
Coin Drive: RHS’s Youth in Action group will begin the annual coin drive on Dec 3rd and end on Dec 19th. This coin drive is a fun way for students to participate in raising money for our local food bank. Alongside the coin drive classes will be encouraged to make as many food hampers they can accomplish as well. This is a friendly competition to earn the title of “eating first” at the Christmas Dinner day, an event put on by the proceeds of staff donating money on Fridays to wear jeans. This is always such a fun time of year for staff and students to give back to the Rosthern community!
Sports Update: Basketball and Curling practices are well underway! Again, I want to extend a HUGE thank-you to our staff who have volunteered 100’s of hours to make sure these programs exist for your children! I would like to take this time to wish all of you a safe and wonderful Holiday Season! I am so blessed to work in the Rosthern Community!

S.R.C. Report
As the RHS SRC, we are always on our toes and busy with something. In October we put on ‘The Haunted Escape Room’ where people entered rooms and had 5 minutes to solve the puzzle in the room with varying difficulties. We had separate rooms for different age groups, from the very little people all the way up to the adults. Last Friday we had the first dance of the school year and it ended in success. It was themed the ‘Snowfall Dance’ and it was our annual winter formal. We had a booth for snacks and a photo booth where you could pay $1 to get the hard print of your photo. However, over the last week we have switched gears and have been busy planning for the upcoming Christmas season. There’s a Christmas themed spirit week coming up that will be taking place from Dec 17th to Dec 21st. Monday (17th) is Christmas Pajama day, Tuesday (18th) is Christmas Character day, Wednesday (19th) is Christmas in July, Thursday (20th) is Funny Christmas Hat day, and Friday (21st) is Ugly Christmas Sweater day.
SRC is also organizing the Christmas Food
Drive, where we will be donating $15 per complete hamper for the class’s coin drive bin. A complete food hamper must include 3 cans of vegetables, 3 cans of fruit, 2 packages of gravy mix, 2 boxes of stove top dressing, 1 can of cranberry sauce, 1 box of pancake mix, 1 pancake syrup, 1 1L container of juice, 1 small tin of coffee, 1 box of chocolate, 1 container of jam (it cannot be homemade), and 1 small can of hot chocolate mix. A class can make as many food hampers as they so choose. Food for the hampers can start being brought in on Dec 3rd. Hampers will be collected on the morning of Dec 14th, then they will be counted and sent to the food bank.
Thank you to the Rosthern Senior’s Curling Club for
their generous donation to our Curling Club. This donation helps us pay for our ice time for the season!
