Please ask the res-

pective university

for the language

requirements that

are necessary for

your study pro-

gramme. Usually your level of

German proficiency is suppo-

sed to be sufficient to easily

follow the classes and to ful-

fil the expected requirements.

Your language skills have to be

already documented at the time of

application and enrolment. Usually

this is documented through a

passed language test, namely the

„Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den

Hochschulzugang ausländischer

Studienbewerber“ (DSH), TestDaF

or an equally recognised test. You

can find the required tests for the

respective study programme at:

Web: www.sprachnachweis.de

At the Language Centre

2. BEFORE ENTERING GERMANY

Language Requirements

10

Visa Application

TIP: YOU CAN FIND MORE INFORMATION ON THIS TOPIC AT:

Web: www.auswaertiges-amt.de/diplo/de/WillkommeninD/EinreiseUndAufent-

halt/Visabestimmungen.html

For your entry with the purpose to study you need a study permit. Do

not entry as a tourist in any case since you cannot convert a

tourist visa into a study permit!

A visa permits you to start a study

programme in the Federal Republic

of Germany. Please inform yourself

about the requirements and proce-

dures of the visa application at your

embassy or consulate in your home

county in due time, i.e. 3-6 months

before the expected entry.

In general the following papers are

required upon the visa application:

•Avalidpassport

•Aconfirmedapplicationora

note of authorisation of a Ger-

man university

•Aproofoffinanceofatleast670

Euro a month

A visa is not required for citizens

of the EU or countries which have

signed special agreements. This

includes currently Honduras,

Iceland, Israel, Japan, Canada,

Lichtenstein, Monaco, Norway,

San Marino, Switzerland

and the United States of

America. These citizens can

apply for a residence permit

at the foreigner s registration

office in Rostock after their entry.

Therefore they still need a proof

of finance of at least 670 Euro

a month. Citizens of the EU will

receive a confirmation of the free

movement of persons.

11

Organising a place in a hall of residence

Accommodation in a room in

one of the Studentenwerks‘

hall of residence is uncom-

plicated and quite cheap.

Further information on halls

of residence, facilities, furniture

and prices can be found at:

Web: www.studentenwerk-rostock.de

Under the section “Wohnen”

(living) you can find all halls of

residence as well as the online ap-

plication. In case of any problems

you can also contact the emplo-

yees of this section via telephone

or email.

All rooms come with a data outlet

to connect to a PC or laptop. The

halls of residence are all connec-

ted with the campus network of

the university. This means that

you have the same access to the

network as if you were on campus,

provided that you have registered

with an account in the particular

computer centre.

TIP: Due to the high demand for

rooms in the halls of residence

it is recommended to apply for

a hall of residence as early as

possible!

12

Signing a health insurancePlease ask the health insurance of

your native country for the EHIC

(European Health Insurance Card)

or an appropriate certificate for

your insurance in Germany. If you

come to Germany without a valid

health insurance you should sign

one within the first days after

your arrival.

IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FEEL FREE TO ASK ONE OF

THE CONTACT PERSONS LISTED ON PAGES 5 AND 6. , WHO ARE

HAPPY TO HELP YOU.

13 Orientation and Introduction at the

Universities

After arrival you

should contact

the International

Office of your

university or visit

the Starter-Café.

You will be welcomed there and get

further organisational information.

3. AFTER ENTRY - STEPS TO MATRI-CULATION

versity of Wismar: Orientation

arrived foreign students. You have the chance to complete all your formalities

with the help of German tutors.

Moreover you get a chance to meet some of your “Kommilitonen”(fellow stu-

dents) and to get some orientation around the city before your courses start.

15

Organising Accommo-dationIf you have not made arrange-

ments for accommodation prior

to your arrival, you have to do this

within the first days after your

arrival. You are welcome to ask

one of the contact persons listed

on pages 5 and 6 for help. They

are happy to help you to find a

suitable place to stay.

A permanent residence is very

important in Germany to regis-

ter with the public authorities

and to open an account.

Rostock University of Music and

Theatre (HMT): Introduction

events

All newly-arrived students are

invited. The University of Music

and Theatre Rostock introduces its

International Office and its tutors

and informs about various support

arrangements. The events usually

take place after the matriculation/

enrolment – watch out for signs in

the university or contact the Interna-

tional Office.

16

AOK Students Service next to the Starter-Café

Health Insurance

Students from EU-countries need

their European Health Insurance

Card (EHIC). International students

from countries without a social secu-

rity agreement with Germany (EU-

countries e.g. Bosnia-Herzegovina,

Iceland, Croatia, Macedonia, Monte-

negro, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland,

Turkey and Tunisia) can get their

existing insurance confirmed by a

German Health Insurance. If you do

not have a health insurance in your

home country, you have to sign one

in Rostock. Students are currently

paying around 78 Euro a month. For

more information you can contact

one of the contact persons listed on

page 5 and 6 or an employee from a

statutory health insurance. You can

take a look at locally represented

insurance companies including

addresses and phone numbers

in the yellow pages. The team of

the Starter-Café ais also happy

to help you (see page 5 & 12).

following papers:

ment

• CertificateofRegistration

Calls and PhonesPublic Telephones

The majority of public telepho-

nes are coin-operated phones.

Private Telephone Connection

There are many providers for landline,

mobile and internet connections. This

means a huge variety in prices, and

the choice between Pre-Paid-Calling

Cards and different plans/contracts.

Please check the duration of the plan/

contract under all circumstances!

Using the dialling codes of various

Call-by-Call providers, you can usually

call from a landline at a cheaper rate.

You can find an overview of these

providers here:

Web: www.billiger-telefonieren.de

Note for residents of the halls of

residence of the student service

organisation “Studentenwerk

Rostock”:

Due to the existing technicalities in the

halls of residence, establishing a land-

line connection is in general unfortuna-

tely not possible. An alternative can

be using mobile phone providers who

offer a „home zone“ as well as using

voice over IP for example via Skype.

TIP: If you just recently arrived and

have not yet signed a contract, you

can use Skype as well as a desktop

computer with internet connection

in the „Starter-Café“ during the

opening hours (Mon to Fri 14h to 17h).

CyclingSince Rostock is not a very big city

and many university institutions are

scattered around the city, is recom-

mendable to buy a bicycle. Many

stretches of way can be mastered

more easily and faster by bicycle

than by public transportation.

Rostock’ssurroundingsarealsoat-

tractive for longer biking tours with

its many cycle paths. Many bicycle

shops in the city are offering used

bicycles to moderate prices. Asked

the sales assistant and compare pri-

ces! Do also ask your German fellow

students – maybe they can give you

some other tips about where to buy

a cheap bicycle.

TIP: At the beginning of every semester the Local ERASMUS Initiative

Rostock (LEI Rostock) is organising a bicycle market. Here you can get a

roadworthy bicycle for already 30 – 40 Euros. Additionally you have to

pay a deposit of 15 Euro for every bicycle. You will get this deposit back

if you return your bike in a sound condition to the students of LEI at the

end of your stay in Rostock. Further information can be found at:

WorkingStudents from the „new“ EU coun-

tries (accession since 2004) and

students from countries that are not

part of the European Union or the

EFTA (European Free Trade Asso-

ciation), have a limited work permit

and can in general work 90 full days

or 180 half days per year. During the

semester a maximum of 20 working

hours are permitted. If you want to

work more hours a work permit is

required. Further information about

this can be obtained at the Federal

Employment Agency („Bundesagen-

Students from non-EU-countries

If you would like to work more than

the number of hours specified abo-

ve, you need a special work permit

for which you can apply for at the

Foreigners‘ Registration Office

(„Ausländerbehörde“). Please note

that this permit can only be granted

in a few cases. You should therefore

not plan to finance your studies by

working on the side.

Students from the „old“ EU- and

EFTA-countries as well as from

Cyprus and Malta

You do not need a work permit to

take on a paid job in Germany. This

also applies for internships. Howe-

ver, you need to request an income

tax card („Lohnsteuerkarte“) at

your respective registration office

(„Einwohnermeldeamt”).

Income Tax Card & 400 Euro-Jobs

You need an income tax card for ne-

arly all kind of jobs. You will receive

itattheForeigners’Registration

Office or your respective registrati-

on office. Exceptions to this rule are

the so-called 400 Euro-Jobs: If you

earn less than 400 Euros a month

you do not need to pay income tax.

However, you still need an income

tax card to official register your job

with the city authorities.

TIP: How can you find a job?

Check the notice boards in the

entrance areas of the university

buildings and in your department

as well as the job advertise-

ment in the local newspapers.

Job advertisements s are also

announced on the webpage of

the student service organisation

“Studentenwerk Rostock” („Pinn-

tation („Studierendenvertretun-

gen”). Another point of contact is
