WHY YOU SHOULD ATTEND Over the years, with your support, the Sooke Rotary Auction & Spring Fair has become our club’s major fund raiser, allowing us to give to the community some important landmarks such as the glass bus shelter in the town centre (1990), the Skateboard Park (1996), the Sooke Area Sign (2001), the Rotary Pier (2004), the playground shelter at CASA (2006), and the gazebo at Ayre Manor (2009). We have continually supported local charitable organizations and provide more than 75 scholarships and bursaries to Sooke youth. The Rotary Club of Sooke has funded SEAPARC’s Community Youth Bus since 2007. This year, 2010, we are celebrating these years of service and impressive cooperative history by hosting a community party – the theme is “Sooke, a great place to be!” Already the community has shown strong support for this event. Local businesses and artists have purchased over 70 display booths, businesses and individuals have contributed over $60,000 worth of donated items for the silent and live auctions, and Food Chi and Holy Trinity Anglican Church will set up an outdoor plant sale and country market. Sooke Rotarian Roger Temple has been busy cleaning up 30 used bikes for the annual bike auction. Local chef Peter Wilford will be serving up a tasty dinner of pulled pork and seafood chowder. The Sooke community’s Wild by Nature Olympics booth is a must see, as well as a sample ShelterBox, like the many that Sooke so generously donated to the Haiti earthquake relief effort. Other highlights from the party will be live entertainment, and inside and outside play areas for children. So come and enjoy! Meet and greet old friends, check out the artists and businesses in town, get some terrific bargains at the auctions, eat dinner with us, relax and listen to the live music, and celebrate Sooke, a great place to be. Rotarian Jerry Van Ek remembers all of them and said the first was held in the Sooke Community Hall and was basically a garage sale and an auction. The event has become a much larger endeavour, but it is and always has been about community. In the prior 19 years, there have been countless bargains found and friends made, and this year’s event looks to be the best one yet. Last year nearly a thousand people visited the show and this year’s event is expected to equally popular! Everyone’s invited from new Sooke to old Sooke, from bargain hunters to brazen bidders, young and old. Just for coming through the door, you get a free chance at winning this year’s door prize — a $100 flower bouquet from Sooke Flower House. Businesses and individuals have donated close to 500 auction items, cash, raffle prizes and services. Items run the gamut from the basic (96 rolls of toilet paper), to the highly practical (Crown dental procedure), to the luxurious (gourmet dinners and massages). Landscaping your yard? We’ve got services like backhoe time and tree pruning and supplies from topsoil to gravel to garden art. Maybe you’re renovating and need a new toilet – we’ve got two deluxe models! Or perhaps you’re planning a small wedding or family reunion and dream of a wonderful setting like the Grouse Nest Resort. Outbidding each other on the silent auction items is becoming a tradition among friends. The annual bicycle auction always attracts cycling enthusiasts. But the real action follows the silent auction, when auctioneer Brian Reimer auctions off the big-ticket items. Who knows what will be most popular auction items? Last year Rotarian Neil Flynn recalls that the Grouse Nest event accommodation for 15 couples was the hottest item and we have it again! Rotarian Jeannette Wilford predicts that this year the Kelowna golf package will generate fierce bidding, along with the Port Renfrew fishing charter and the 40” TV. From fine art to pet boarding, discover all these things and more as you explore the live and silent auction items listed on the following pages. For those who are new to Sooke or visiting the area, the Rotary Auction and Spring Fair is one of the best ways to find out who is doing what business-wise in the Sooke area. With over 70 display booths, it is the biggest business and community event of the year. Many local artists and craftspeople take the opportunity show off their unique creations, and there’s an all-day outdoor plant sale too! To feed the fun, Holy Trinity Anglican offers a canteen during the day serving chili, desserts, and beverages from 11-3. Dinner is served from 5-7 pm, with Chef Peter Wilford presenting a two- tiered menu of seafood chowder and pulled pork, plus a wine and beer garden. This event funds the majority of Sooke Rotary’s activities. Treasurer Patrick Fallon says this event over the years has generated over $300,000 in support for the local community. These funds have been invested in significant capital projects like the Skateboard Park and the Rotary Pier and most recently, the bus for SEAPARC youth programs. The event funds annual bursaries, leadership and literacy programs and grants for many local non- profit organizations. In addition, individual Rotarians contribute to overseas programs that include building a school in Malawi, creating sustainable, clean water supplies, polio eradication, and disaster relief. 20 years of this event means 20 years of the community investing in itself and having some fun in the process. So, join us on May 1st and help Rotary continue helping Sooke. But more importantly, come join in the fun! Let’s celebrate Sooke – A Great Place to Be!
