New Year’s Resolutions The quaint custom of New Year’s resolutions is actually helpful to many, if only to help enforce life’s milestones and to serve as a measure of progress. Their value as life-changing guidelines for the year – stimulants to action – is less clear.

Why not take advantage of this opportunity, each club, to determine where we stand, mid-Rotary year, on this year’s Rotary resolutions.

You will recall that RI President Tanaka offered three: strong clubs, sustainable projects and memorable imaging.

First, strengthening clubs: By this, we mean having a healthy meeting environment as reflected in a club’s membership numbers. If these numbers hold, or even decrease very slightly, then that club will be considered healthy.

On the other hand, if the number of members increases, that club will be seen to be very successful in this area.

As always, the membership growth we seek is not only a matter of numbers, but of active and interested participants. The people we want as Rotarians are those who have reached a point in their lives where they can acknowledge the interconnectivity that links us all, and where they feel confident that they have something to contribute to improving the greater good.

Time is their most important contribution, so potential members must be expert at time management in order for their Rotary work to fit in with their occupational and family commitments. For time reasons, finding members within comfortable commuting range of your weekly meetings is a must. A very specific New Year Resolution for smaller clubs might be to increase membership numbers to equal the requirement for chartering a new club: 25 members.

President Tanaka’s second goal or resolution is to insure that the thousands of projects clubs manage around the world every year are ultimately sustainable. “Sustainable” does not mean, “repeated over and over again.” Sustainable means designing projects that with proper mentoring will continue to reward stakeholders even when the initiating Rotary club re-directs its resources to other challenges.

When The Rotary Foundation (TRF) Future Vision plan comes online for all clubs on 1 July of this year, the sustainable objective will become more pronounced. This is because all TRF projects

of all size will be required to demonstrate that they will be self-directing and sustainable after a reasonable period. Insufficient planning for a sustainable continuation will result in a rejected application.

A realistic club New Year Resolution in this regard might be to make it a point to factor in sustainability planning for all club projects, no matter how funded. Not only do communities gain more from taking over ownership of projects, but also the clubs themselves are free to find alternative innovative ways to help improve the general good.

The third Resolution for this Rotary year is to work on strengthening Rotary’s image, its brand recognition, among the general public.

Some of the clubs have ambitious plans for huge roadside billboards or for huge conferences or for year-long radio campaigns. These are admirable initiatives. However, simply displaying the Rotary wheel on every occasion possible can be very effective. I am often asked to explain the funny gear logo that I wear on my lapel – an excellent opportunity for a quick description of (and invitation to) Rotary.

More, many of us have regular speaking opportunities. Whenever possible, it can be beneficial to audiences for us to mention Rotary, its mission to help build world peace, and its “Service Above Self” motto. Even working the occasional mention of our great organization into normal conversation can help to raise awareness concerning Rotary’s vision and successes.

At the moment, Rotary is identified with Polio eradication. In some countries, like Canada, mentioning Polio conjures up the Rotary name immediately. In other countries, the connection is considerably more nuanced... if it exists at all.

Rotary has public relations materials that can help promote an understanding of our work in general and polio eradication in specific. Take advantage of the videos and share them with both potential and new members.

There you have it: three Rotary New Year Resolutions, and three specific targets with three specific outcomes. As we begin a new calendar year, let’s renew our commitment to Service Above Self and more, aiming for Peace Through Service.

Dear fellow Rotarians,

The year 2012 is nearly gone, and we have reached the midpoint of this Rotary year. It is time to take stock of the goals we have set for ourselves, and the progress we have made toward them. Are we on track to achieve what we set out to accomplish? I am a great believer in the importance of setting goals that are high but realistic. A worthwhile goal should be within your reach but still require you to stretch. Opening yourself to a new challenge helps you find out what you are really capable of – which may well be more than you think. On 1 July, we will embark on our new-est challenge as an organization: the full rollout of the Future Vision Plan, the new grant model for our Rotary Foundation. We in Rotary have set for ourselves a simple and vital goal: to do the most good we can

with all the resources we have. To do this, we will be working to reduce overhead; to improve accountability, transparency, and local control; and to focus our service more intensely in the areas where we know we can have the most impact. With Future Vision, we will implement a simplified grant structure that will encourage Rotarians to serve in our six areas of focus: peace and conflict prevention/resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, and economic and community development. These are areas in which Rotarians around the world have already been working for many years, and in which we have experience and a track record of project sustainability. Sustainability will be a major focus under Future Vision, as we shift our emphasis to long-term, high-impact projects. Simply

put, a sustainable project is one that will continue to benefit the world even after Rotary funding ends. The ultimate example of a sustainable project, of course, is polio eradication: When polio is gone, the good that we have done will continue forever, centuries after the last polio vaccine is given. And thelessons we have learned from PolioPlus are universal. A truly sustainable project requires an emphasis on planning and cooperation, a long-term perspective, and an approach that considers community members as partners in our service, not passive recipients. Embracing Future Vision means embracing a more ambitious view of Rotary – one in which we work to address major issues in a serious, lasting way. It is a new way of thinking about our service, and an approach that I believe will lead to a Foundation more capable than ever of Doing Good in the World.

It’s hard to believe that we have already reached the month of December, the month that celebrates the family of Rotary. We are also nearing the halfway point of our Foundation’s year. Now is the time when our plans to reach our 2012-13 goals should be reevaluated. Our words, our promises, our actions should be taking shape to ensure that we will accomplish what we planned during the last calendar year.

The month of December also provides each of us with much to think about. It is during this month that we pause to recognize World AIDS Day, International Volunteer Day, and Human Rights Day – all significant reminders to Rotarians of our Foundation’s aim of Doing Good in

the World. Many of our clubs are work-ing to help people with AIDS, others are volunteering all over the world to deliver Peace Through Service , and it is hard to count the number that will be raising their voices on 10 December for human rights.

My friends, as we start to wind down another calendar year, I am thankfulto report that your Foundation is ontrack to achieve its goals for 2012-13 because of each and every Rotarian. This provides us with much to celebrate over the upcoming holiday season. My prayers and best wishes go out to each of you for a happy holiday season, and I eagerly look forward to sharing 2013 with you.

A group of Japanese Rotarians renew old friendships made at an RI Convention with club members from Australia. Italian Rotarian parents of a former Rotary Youth Exchange student spend time with the family who hosted their son in Thailand. Rotarian pediatricians from Ghana travel to Germany to stay with doctors there. Experiences like these happen all the time through Rotary Friendship Exchange, Rotary’s international exchange program for Rotarians and their families. Participants experience other cultures and build friendships by staying in the homes of Rotary club members in another country. This program advances international understanding and peace through personal contact across borders while developing interclub relationships that lead to fellowship and service projects.

How it worksFriendship Exchanges

•VisitorprogramIndividual Rotarians, who may be accompanied by family members, spend a few days in a Rotarian’s home abroad.

• TeamprogramRotarian couples (typically four to six) visit several communities in a host district for up to one month.

• Uni-vocational Rotarians of the same occupation observe how their job is done in other countries.

Guidelines • Only Rotarians and their immediate families are eligible for the visitor program, and participation in the team program is limited to Rotarians and their spouses. • Spouses or children must always be accompanied by Rotarians on an exchange. • Rotarians interested in participating

must apply through their club president. Not every district participates in Friendship Exchange, so prospective applicants should ask their club president about the program. • District governors from participating districts appoint a district Friendship Exchange chair, who is responsible for coordinating exchanges through a list of chairs from around the world. District Rotary FriendshipExchange Committee Chair Each year, the district governor appointsa district Rotary Friendship Exchange chair to coordinate the district’s exchange program. When Bill Simmermon joined the Rotary Club of Highlands Ranch (Littleton), Colorado, USA, six years ago, he wanted to be an active member without sacrificing time with his family. So, the father of two brought his sons along to lunch meetings and involved them in club activities. His eldest son, Denver, has taken part in community and international service projects, is a member of Interact , and has been the featured speaker several times at the club’s weekly meeting. And Simmermon’s wife has been an active part of the club. “My family is all in,” Simmermon says. “My involvement with Rotary doesn’t conflict with family time. It has actually enhanced

our family time, because we are all there together.” On RI’s official LinkedIn group, several Rotarians also discussed the benefits of involving their family in Rotary. Henna Budhrani, a member of the Rotary club of St. Maarten, Sint Maarten, says she has included her children in the club’s holiday food distribution to the elderly. Her kids will also attend the club’s annual Christmas party for children from low-income families. Like father, like son Bruce Thomson belongs to the same club as his father, the Rotary Club of Lynnwood, Washington, USA, and both are past presidents. Long before he joined, however, Thomson notes he took part in

the club’s annual projects, along with his mother and four sisters. His children now help out in club projects. “Our club serves as the conduit for our family’s community service,” Thomson says. “Rotary has had a major impact in our family evolution and that has impacted the community.” “Rotary has something to offer the whole family,” Simmermon says. “For some of our members, the No. 1 reason they were interested in Rotary was that they could get their children involved in service projects. There’s a big push in high schools to have children take part in community service, and it looks good on their transcript when they apply for college.”

And he notes that The Four-Way Test and Rotary’s other guiding principles are useful for parents. “The same values Rotary stands for are values we believe in as a family,” he says. “We want to pass along those values to our children.” Family is on the minds of many Rotarians in December, as Rotary celebrates Family Month. In addition to recognizing the importance of families in Rotary, the month celebrates the family of Rotary, which includes Rotarians and all those involved in Rotary’s work -- from Rotary Foundation program alumni to participants in Rotary youth programs around the world.
