Paul P. Harris 1868-1947 Paul. P. Harris, a lawyer, was the founder of Ro-tary, the world’s first and most international service club. Born in Racine, Wisconsin, U.S.A, ON April 19th, 1868, Paul was the second of six children to George N. Harris and Cornelia Bryan Harris. At Age 3, he moved to Wallingford, Vermont where he grew up in the care of his parental grandparents. Married to Jean Thompson Harris (1881-1963), they had no chil-dren. Paul Harris worked as a newspaper reporter, a busi-

ness teacher, stock company actor, cowboy, and traveled extensively in the U.S.A. and Europe selling marble and granite. In 1896, he went to Chicago to practice law. One evening Paul visited the suburban home of a profes-sional friend. After dinner, as they strolled through the neighborhood, Paul’s friend introduced him to various tradesmen in their stores. It was here Paul conceived the idea of a club that could recapture some of the friendly spirit among businessman in small communities. On February 23, 1905, Paul Harris formed the first club with three other businessmen: Silvester Schiele, a coal merchant; Gustavus Loehr, a mining engineer; and Hiram Shorey, a merchant tailor. Paul Harris named the new club “Rotary” because members met in rotation at their various places of business. Club membership grew rapidly. Soon Paul became convinced that the Rotary club could be developed into an important service move-ment and strove to extend Rotary to other cities. Paul was also prominent in other civic and professional work. He served as the first chairman of the board of the National Easter Seals Society of Crippled Children and Adults in the U.S.A. and of the International Society for Crippled Children. He was a member of the board of managers of the Chicago Bar Association and its representatives at the International con-gress of Law at the Hague, and a committee member of the American Bar Association. He received the Silver Buffalo Award from the Boy Scouts of America for distinguished service to youth, and was decorated by the gov-ernments of Brazil, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, and Peru. Paul maintained his law office for most of his life. He spent much time traveling and was invited to speak to Rotarians at annual conventions, dis-trict and regional meetings, and other functions. When President emeritus Paul Harris passed away on January 27, 1947, his dream had grown from an informal meeting of four to some 6000 clubs. In the past five decades, the organization has grown to more than 33,000 clubs with 1.2 million members.

Rotary Builder Recognition

This is strictly a voluntary program, and if your club wants to participate, please submit the name of the one individual that is always there when Rotary work is being done. He or she may not be the leader of the project but nearly always participates in one capacity or another. The person you can always count on to be involved. If you absolutely can’t decide between two people, contact me and we maybe can do two.

This individual will be recognized during the Governor’s Official Visit. He or she will get a pin, certificate and recognition for helping build a better world through Rotary. We would encourage pho-tos to be taken during the presentation and submitted to your local me-dia.

We need the name and information on the individual at least two weeks prior to visit. The sooner the better.

There are times when the Governor won’t be home for several days. We will need to print the names and put the certificates together, and need your help to make this deserved recognition possible

To all whom shall see these presents welcome,

let it be known that

Joe Rotary Is recognized for his contributions and service above self to his

Rotary Club and the World Community.

By the authority vested in me as the 2015-2016 Governor of District 5790

I hereby decree that henceforth he shall be known as a

Rotary Builder And that all Rotarians shall accord him all recognition and deference

that this title bestows on him.

Utilization of Rotary Resources

District Governor – The District Governor is the liaison between RI, the District team and the clubs of the District. The DG exists to assist the District Rotarians in achieving their goals and objectives. The DG promotes the various RI programs in an effort to keep Rotarians well versed in all the Avenues of Service Assistant Governors – The AG is a liaison between the DG, the dis-trict chairs, and the clubs. The AG assists the DG in preparing the clubs for their Rotary year. Special attention is given to the clubs prior to the DG visit. District Avenue of Service Chairs – The District Avenue of Service Chairs (Vocational, Community, International, Youth and Foun-dation) assist the district committees in preparing and implementing goals. These chairs work directly with the District Governor in order to achieve committee goals and promote all structured RI programs. These committee chairmen will determine the curriculum and se-quence of events for the District Assembly in each Avenue of Ser-vice. The District Foundation Chair and the District Membership Chair will coordinate efforts to plan and implement a combined Foundation/Membership Seminar. All subcommittee chairs will submit a written report to their respec-tive Avenue of Service Chairs every two months. The Avenue of Ser-vice Chairs will submit this report along with comments to the District Governor. District Chairs – The District Chairs supply information to the AG’s and the clubs on specific Rotary topics. In some instances, Chairs form a vital part in the preparation and implementation of certain RI structured programs within the district such as GSE, RYLA, and Youth Exchange. Chairs also report on a bi-monthly basis to their respective District Avenue of Service Chair.

District Chairs and committee members also are encouraged to be pro-active, speaking at clubs and preparing a written article for the district newsletter, especially if the topic is relevant as a theme of the month. District Chairs also will present at the District Assembly if sched-uled. District Trainer – The District Trainer assists members of the district team to understand their area of responsibilities. The trainers work with the team to develop goals and offer strategies on implementa-tion. The trainers are available all during the year District Website - The District Website is a vehicle for information. It archives such documents as the District Bylaws, the District Leader-ship Plan, and the newsletter. It also lists a calendar of events, pro-gram information, and registration forms. Listing of information needs the approval from either the DG or the District Secretary. The website is the source for the most current contact information for Dis-trict personnel and district calendar. It is downloadable in Adobe Ac-robat form for printing. Gotomeeting.com – Online technology facilitates the planning and implementation of many projects. Use of this resource will increas-ingly be used for training as well. District Newsletter – The newsletter offers a way for the DG to con-vey information from RI and the district to the clubs. It is a method for committee chairs to disseminate information to the clubs. Chairs will prepare an article for an assigned month. The newsletter is also a way to showcase club projects and events. District Database – The database is warehouse of district Rotarian contact information. Filters can be created to market to specific Ro-tarians in the district. The DG, AG’s and district chairs may utilize this database to promote programs and events. Request for utilization of the database must be submitted to the District Secretary for ap-proval.

63

Rotary International Website – The RI website www.rotary.org hosts a myriad of information and tools. Information can be obtained on specific international projects, clubs, and specific programs such as Foundation, Vocational, Community, and Club. Individual Rotarians also can find personal information on themselves using the member access section of the site. Manual of Procedure – This manual offers a detailed listing of all Rotary protocol. Information is given on required procedures for all levels of Rotary. When in doubt read the MOP. District Bylaws – The District Bylaws indicate the district boundaries and give specific information on the role of the district. The Bylaws are not meant to replace the RI Manual of Procedure. In fact, the MOP is first in Rotary protocol. The District Leadership Plan – The DLP gives an overview of dis-trict procedures and specific roles for each member of the District Leadership Team The RI Official Directory – This directory offers information on RI officers, RI committees, and advisors. It also is a listing of all districts with their respective clubs and club contacts.
