Weekly News and Announcements

Hello Rotarians and Friends! I hope all of you are doing well on this

perfect summer day! This is MY kind of weather. I finally had a chance to

give the AC a break and open windows and let the breeze blow through the

house. Last night, I could actually fall asleep to the sounds of crickets

chirping. Fabulous!

Attendance was down a bit at this week’s meeting, but it didn’t stop us from

having a great time. Chris Shape was back on Fellowship and I can’t believe

he hasn’t yet told a Browns/Steelers joke! Maybe it’s because there is so

much political fodder to choose from. Oh, well. It will be interesting to see

what he comes up with this Wednesday.

Guests and Visiting Rotarians – We were happy to welcome the following

guests to our meeting this week, two of which have submitted membership

applications: Ginny Bond, Karen Wrightsman, Kelsey Martin, Ted Stazak,

and Ken Bigley.

Expressions of Concern – We got another update today on our dear friend,

John Zimomra. According to his wife, Stephanie, he is now in acute rehab

at the Cleveland Clinic. He is undergoing occupational and physical therapy

and is expected to be there for at least another 10 days. He received our

card and appreciated all the get well wishes. We continue to keep him in

our thoughts and prayers and look forward to his rejoining us.

Chocolate Festival – Believe it or not, this event is just around the corner!

John Campolito reminded all of us today that it will be held on Thursday,

October 13th, at St. Demetrios on Atlantic Avenue. We will be starting

almost immediately to get sponsorships in place as well as auction items and

vendors. For those who are new, there are several sponsorship levels

available with various benefits to the donor in each. If you want to get

information about how you can become a sponsor, contact John Campolito.

Foundation Board Meeting – The Foundation Board will meet on Wednesday,

August 24, 11:30 a.m. at Enzo’s. Members should confirm their attendance

with Cheryl if they have not yet done so.

Warren Homecoming Concert – The concert we will be sponsoring on

Saturday, September 24th, as part of the Warren Homecoming weekend will

be the Ohio Players. The Ohio Players are an American funk and R&B band,

most popular in the 1970s. They are best known for their songs "Fire" and

"Love Rollercoaster". Gold certifications, records selling at least five

hundred thousand copies, were awarded to the singles "Funky Worm",

Tight, Fire, and Honey. On August 17, 2013, The Ohio Players were

inducted into the inaugural class of the Official R&B Music Hall of Fame

that took place at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio. We are

delighted to sponsor this group and encourage all Rotarians to make plans

to purchase tickets when they go on sale. The concert will be held at

Packard Music Hall.

RI International Convention – As you may know, next year our club will be

celebrating its 100th anniversary. Julia Wetstein would love to have a

booth at the Convention in the House of Friendship to let our closest

35,000+ friends know what we have accomplished in our first 100 years.

The Convention will be held from June 10 to 14, 2017. Expect to hear

more about the upcoming convention in Atlanta, GA as the year goes by.

Quaker Steak and Lube Bike Night – As you all

know, last Friday was another of our Bike Nights

at Quaker Steak and Lube. We’ve been told all

summer how much fun these events are. Friday

night I received this picture and I would say

that our Rotarians, indeed, were having a great

time. There is one more Night to go in

September, so it’s not too late to join in the fun!

A Programming Note – Julia Wetstein announce a couple of weeks ago

that sometime in the next couple of months we would have some speakers

from the organization helping victims of acid attacks in Uganda. One will

be the fund administrator, Victoria, who will join us on October 12th, and

the second will be Hanifa, the woman we saw in the documentary film by

Leonard Lies. We are still waiting to hear when she can join us. Please

mark your calendars and make plans to attend.

Speaking of Uganda – The Rotary International President in 2018-2019

will Be Samuel Frobisher Owori, a businessman from the Rotary Club of

Kampala, Uganda. He has a truly impressive resume, as one would expect,

and Julia has high hopes that he will be supportive of our efforts to help

the victims of acid attacks in his home country. Knowing Julia, they will be

the best of friends by the time he becomes President, especially if she

has a chance to meet him at the Convention in Atlanta.

Akron Children’s Hospital – We were delighted to present a check in the

amount of $200 today to Akron Children’s Hospital from the Dirt Track

Heroes Event at Quaker Steak and Lube on June 16th. We partnered with

Rotary

Code of

Conduct

As a Rotarian, I will:

Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal

and professional

life.

Deal fairly with others

and treat them and their

occupations with respect.

Use my

professional skills through

Rotary to mentor young people, help those with

special needs, and improve

people’s quality of life

in my community

and the world.

Avoid behavior that

reflects adversely on

Rotarians.

the hospital to raise additional funds and we know that they will be used

wisely. Karen Wrightsman and Kelsey Martin accepted the check on behalf

of the hospital.

Rotary on the Road AGAIN!

On Wednesday, September 14th, Rotary will hold

its lunch meeting at the GM plant in Lordstown.

We don’t have all the details yet regarding lunch,

but we will be sure to share it with you once they

are known.

Please mark your calendars and make plans to join us for the lunch and tour!

Fun with Flags

Today, Julia Wetstein shared a Rotary Tidbit

about Rotary Banners. Each year, the RI President

selects a theme for his or her year and each Club

President is given a banner with that theme. Julia

showed us some of the flags she has been given as

she traveled overseas and interacted with other

clubs in the United States. Most, if not all, clubs

have their own trading banners, or flags, including the Rotary Club of

Warren! Ours has the beautiful City Hall on it. Members were encouraged

to take one (or more) if they are going to be traveling and attending

another club meeting while doing so.

We keep banners at Enzo’s so if you are interesting in exchanging ours for

one from another club, just see Julia or Cheryl at an upcoming meeting.

Trumbull County Metro Parks

Zachary Svette, Operations Director of Trumbull

County Metro Parks, was our speaker today and shared

information about one of Trumbull County’s most

important resources.

The Metro Parks System consists of seven parks open

to the public and nine additional properties in various stages of

development. The total area is more than 1,680 acres located in 13 of

Trumbull County’s 35 political subdivisions. Park hours are sunrise to

sunset.

Under the Metro Parks umbrella are the Foster Metro Park, Canoe City

Metro Park, Thomas A. Swift Metro Park, Cooperation Station Off-leash

Dog Park, Mahoning River Water Trail, Western Reserve Greenway,

Clarence Darrow Metro Park, North Road Nature Preserve, and Eastlake

Metro Park.

The Metro Park system is governed by a board of Park Commissioners,

appointed by the Probate Court Judge, and serving staggered three-year

terms. The Park budget is approximately $95,000 and has only one

employee.

The Greenway Bike Trail was a topic of considerable interest on the part

of our members. It extends from North River Road to the

Ashtabula/Trumbull County line. From that point it becomes the Ashtabula

Bike Trail and extends another 25 miles to the Ashtabula City limits.

Members had many questions about the various sections of the Bike Trail

and their completion dates, facilities along the trail, detours in place, and

safety and traffic concerns. From the level of interest shown, it was

obvious that the Metro Parks are valued by residents and considered to be

an important part of the community.

We thank Zachary for joining us today and encourage anyone wishing to

learn more to go to TrumbullMetroParks.org.
