IMPORTANT: Read Before Installation Hanging the DegasserThe degasser unit is designed to be supported from above. An optional stainless steel hanger or alternative method may be used to support the unit above the tank. In addition, the unit requires a water seal at the bottom of the degasser. Make sure that the degasser base extension is located at least 1" below the water surface. The water seal provides an air plenum to ensure that air flows up through the degasser unit.

Required Components Each unit requires approximately 4 cubic feet of Bio-Barrel media. We suggest placing the media in mesh bags to simplify cleaning and maintenance. In addition, a blower will be required that provides an air flowrate of approximately 100 cfm. Operation of the degasser requires connectors and piping for air and water.

WiringAll wiring for the installation of this unit should be completed by a licensed electrician according to Local and National Electrical Regulations.

How the System WorksThe degasser is a counter-current degasser designed to remove high levels of dissolved gas from the water. The system may be used to remove carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and other volatile gases. Water flows by gravity down through the degasser while air is forced upward. The stripping action of the air passing water results in the removal of volatile gases.

Overview of System SetupThe degasser is roto-molded using high-density polyethylene (PE). These rugged PE units are modular, designed for stacking more than one unit.

Figure 1 shows a typical installation. The degasser is positioned directly above the fish tank using a hanger and stainless steel cables. Inlet water piping is connected to the degasser using flexible couplings. Airflow is provided by a blower connected using vinyl hose.

The degasser has been designed for typical clean water aquacultural conditions. In unusual cases, including systems with high levels of alkalinity or heterotrophic and green water applications, you may want to oversize the system by adding an appropriate safety factor. Call Pentair AES if you have questions.

Components of SystemThe degasser comes with the following parts (see Figure 2):

1. Roto-molded degasser lid & base (two parts).

2. Grating for base of degasser (cut to fit bottom).

3. Four-inch mesh pipe air plenum (17" length).

4. Foam gasket w/ adhesive.

5. Four cables (cut to 38" length, crimped w/connector).

6. Four sets of eye bolt assemblies— eye bolts, PVC disks, washers, etc. (Figure 3).

Figure 2

Figure 3

Figure 4

The degasser unit is designed for water flowrates up to 150 gpm. Each of the three water inlets will handle 50 gpm for a total maximum water flowrate of 150 gpm.

A 100 cfm blower will provide the required airflow for up to 150 gpm water flowrate (5:1 ratio of air to water). One blower may be used for one degasser at 150 gpm, or with three degassers when the water flowrates are 50 gpm per degasser unit. The degasser will be just as efficient— and more efficient in most cases—when the airflow exceeds the required 5:1 ratio of air to water.

Available Options1. Bio-Barrel media.

2. Mesh bags for media.

3. Air blower.

4. SS hanger (1/8" 304 stainless; 17" length).

5. Flexible couplings—up to three required.

Customer Supplied Items1. Water inlet manifold (see CAD drawing Appendix).

2. Vinyl dryer hose.

Assembly1. Remove the degasser unit from

packaging and open degasser by removing the lid (Figure 4).

2. Cut ends off the air and water inlet pipes and the air outlet pipe on degasser lid. The 2" diameter inlet pipes may be cut using a PVC pipe cutter. The larger pipes for air may be cut using a hacksaw. The length of piping cut off should be less than 1" to ensure that sufficient pipe is available for connection of couplings and vinyl hose.

3. Attach flexible couplings (see Figure 5) to the water inlet pipes. An optional manifold may be assembled when all three water inlets are used (see Figure 6 and Appendix for diagram and assembly instructions).

7. Connect vinyl hose between the blower (Figure 12) and air inlet at bottom of the degasser (Figure 13). Hose clamps may be used for connections. A reducer is required at the 4" diameter blower outlet (degasser inlet pipe is 3" diameter).

4. Make sure that the support grating has been placed in bottom of the degasser (Figure 7).

5. Insert the 4-inch diameter mesh plastic tube in bottom of the degasser, above the support grating. Make sure that the end of the mesh tube covers the air inlet and is installed inline with the air inlet pipe (Figure 8).

6. Add Bio-Barrel media to the degasser unit (Figure 9). Approximately 4 cubic feet of media is required. If using mesh bags, the media may be divided equally in three bags (Figure 10). Total volume of media may be less if using mesh bags. Do not fill above the bottom of water inlet pipes (Figure 11).

8. Attach a stainless steel cable to each of the four eyebolts on the outside of the degasser (see Figures 14 and 15).

9. The optional stainless steel hanger (Figure 16) may be used to hang the degasser above the tank. The four stainless steel cables are designed to connect to the hanger, which must be supported from above. When hanging the unit, make sure that the degasser base is at least one inch below the water surface. The water seal is required for counter-current airflow through the degasser.

Disassembly 1. Disconnect blower and pump from electrical service.

2. Reverse instructions for assembly above.

Electrical RequirementsThe blower requires a standard 115VAC/15-amp power supply. Make sure your installation adheres to all local and national electrical codes. A GFCI should be used with the blower.

Blower Specifications• Maximum airflow 250 cfm.• Maximum static pressure 1.7 inches water.• 1.35 amps @ 115 VAC.• Four-inch inlet and outlet ports.

General MaintenanceBio-Barrel media may require cleaning periodically, depending on operating conditions. To clean, simply remove the media from the degasser and spray with water or a pressure wash. Be sure to rinse thoroughly before replacing.

Troubleshooting Guide

WARNINGKeep electrical components away from the water and unplug system before servicing. Use only ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) to prevent electrocution.Disconnect power to blower and pump before performing maintenance on the degasser system. Before testing the components, make sure the master switch is off and that any safety devices (breakers and GFCI) are reset.

Make sure the blower is placed above the inlet to the degasser. Piping should be directed downward to the degasser inlet.

The base of the degasser unit must extend into the water. This provides a water seal below the degasser that forces air (and any gases stripped from the water) to travel upward and out of the degasser.

The Bio-Barrel media may require periodic cleaning due to biofouling.

Keep all chemicals such as solvents, insecticides, cleaning agents (bleach), aerosols, etc., away from the blower system inlet.

Figure 17

10. Connect the inlet water piping to the flexible couplings or the optional manifold (Figure 6 and Appendix) attached to the degasser water inlets (see step #3).

11. Reinstall the lid on top of degasser (it should provide a snug fit to seal unit).

12. Attach the 4" vinyl hose to air outlet pipe on lid. The airflow should be discharged outside the building (Figure 17).

13. Connect blower to electrical supply.

14. Start water flow to degasser unit. Water flow should spread uniformly across the upper surface of the media.

15. Turn on blower. Check for water and/or air leaks. Make sure that air is flowing through the degasser unit to maximize efficiency.
