Ask a homeowner what his worst nightmare

is, and it might be a dishonest person breaking

into his place of refuge to steal his belongings

and bringing harm to his loved ones.

Unfortunately, it is a nightmare that happens

to many people every year. During 2010, 79,210

burglaries occurred in this state, according to a

North Carolina Department of Justice crime

report.

Fortunately, there are protective measures

homeowners can use to fortify their castles

against such lawlessness.

Guy J. Lalonde, Marine Corps Air Station

New River physical security specialist, said there

are many inexpensive, easy-to-install home

improvements available in many stores.

Many of these dont involve permanent

work and are allowed in rented places, like on-

base housing, said Lalonde.

The simplest item is a wedge that slips under

a door and prevents anyone from opening it

from the other side. A high-tech version of it

includes an alarm that rings when pressure is put

on the door.

Portable alarm systems are also effective,

said Lalonde. These $20-30 systems use Velcro

and glue to stay in place so a renter can install

it without damaging any walls. These alarm

systems, when armed, use motion detectors to

warn if a door or window is opened.

Motion detectors can also be used to activate

lights. Used at night, these lights are effective

in a backyard where there should be minimal

movement, Lalonde added.

Lalonde said dogs also have proven to repel

criminals. The larger and louder dogs tend to

inflict fear into criminals the most. However, if

dogs are not allowed in a rented place, recordings

of dogs barking also work.

Renters should try to change locks on all

doors, because previous tenants might have

made spare keys to come back and rob the

residence.

Aside from physical preventive measures,

people can adopt certain behaviors to reduce

crime in their neighborhoods, said Lalonde. It is

important to keep a vigilant state of mind.

Here at Marine Corps Air Station New

River, we dont get a lot of crime compared to

out in town, or even on Camp Lejeune, said

Lalonde. But, that doesnt mean it doesnt

happen. People need to use their noodles.

Neighbors should get to know one another

and learn who belongs in the area and who

does not. Outlaws scout out houses and the

surrounding areas before breaking and entering.

Criminals look for homes with tenants that

are away on vacation. To make a house not look

empty, residents can have neighbors park their

cars in the driveway, stop mail and newspaper

services, and keep lights or televisions on a

timer.

Also, trimming trees and bushes will allow

residents to see if anyone is watching their

houses.

Using all these tips can help protect a home.

But, it doesnt always work and intruders can

sometimes get past every defense.

Locks are used to keep honest people

honest, said Lalonde, who has worked in

physical protection since 1982.

To prepare for that scenario beforehand,

people should know some facts about

burglaries.

Most usually happen during daylight hours,

when people are away at work or elsewhere,

said Lalonde. Delinquents typically go after the

easiest targets that have no one at home.

However, if a resident is inside, the best

thing to do is to find a room, secure yourself

in it and call 911, said Lalonde. This needs to

be quick because burglars typically get inside a

residence in about 30 seconds.

Once inside, criminals confirm their

escapes routes. After that, they usually spend

approximately three-and-a-half minutes inside

searching for valuables before retreating to

safety.

To prevent loss of valuables, Lalonde said

he suggests spreading it out in the house so

the burglar has a lower chance of stealing

everything.

Using all these tips can help prevent a

burglary or diminish its result. However, the

most important advice is to keep vigilant.

The Department of the Navy (DON) is inviting public comment on the Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) for

Site UXO23, the D9 Skeet Range, located on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The EE/CA identifies and discusses the

alternatives for surface soil removal in the vicinity of the theoretical shot fall zone.

In accordance with 40 CFR 300.415(b)(4)(i), the summary of remedial alternatives evaluated for the D9 Skeet Range is

presented in the EE/CA. In situ stabilization with excavation and offsite disposal is the preferred alternative for the non

timecritical removal action for soil.

The EE/CA is based upon the findings of previous siterelated documents contained in the DONs Administrative Record

for Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The EE/CA and other background documentation are available for public review in
