I

stood up quickly and made distance between myself

and the figures that were hovering over me, which was

a good thing because they were zombies.

What I saw next broke my heart.

Nick, Tina and the Marine slowly shuffled toward me.

They were dead. I failed them.

Standing there frozen, I watched my best friend and his sis-

ter shuffle toward me with cannibalistic intent. They had gray

skin, blood-red eyes and bite marks on their arms and hands.

Hey boy, you still alive? shouted an unfamiliar voice.

I turned to see a man who looked like the epitome of a

redneck.

This guy fell out of the redneck tree and hit every branch

on the way down.

The guy stood about 5-foot-8 inches wearing a tattered and

stained white T-shirt with a confed-

erate flag on the front,

sported a tight blond mullet and ripped jean shorts.

Well dont just stand there boy, grab sumthin heavy and

bash them there zombies heads, he shouted.

I cant. Theyre my friends, I said weakly.

As soon as I muttered the words, the redneck wonder

sent a melee of bullets in my friends direction, completely

obliterating the two people I called my companions.

After clearing out the rest of the zombies, the man ap-

proached me, winded from the encounter.

I heard the wreck from about a mile away, he said. Where

in the world were yall headed?

MCAS New River, I used to be stationed there.

The man shot me a surprised look.

Then I guess you havent heard, he said.

As he went on to explain about the beginning of the out-

break, all I could do was stand and listen in complete shock.

He explained how a bad batch of CS gas during a gas chamber

exercise caused a weird reaction in Marines, causing them to

turn into these undead creatures. He told me how the

entire Jacksonville area was filled with lost citi-

zens of the afterlife in less than two hours.

Only pockets of Marine survivors lucky enough to have

been on training exercises remained in the more remote areas

of the city.

The Marine he just shot was probably one of them.

How wide spread is this thing? I asked, preparing for the

worst.

Its everywhere, man, and its not stopping. Im not sure

how a bunch of school-kids like you would have survived this

long. What are you going to do now? Youre more than wel-

come to come with me. Ive got a pretty good stronghold up in

a Home Depot not far from here. Weve got generators, heavy

weapons like pipes and axes and enough water to last us a year.

Sure, Ill come along, I said without hesitation.

As soon as I finished my sentence, I heard an explosion and

turned to see my car obliterated, smoke filling

the air.

A piece of charred cardboard fell at my

feet and I bent down to pick it up.
