7:09a Rottnest Island - Glimpses of the northeast corner
How many have taken photos of the island’s two lighthouses? A heck of a lot for sure. They also feature in much of theofficial literature relating to the island. They’ve become icons. Silent sentinels of resilience. As long as they remainstanding we know that the tsunamis, economic or otherwise, haven’t been too large. Well that’s my theory anyway. I'monly a wombat.
I briefly visited the Bathurst lighthouse with Fremantlebiz last year on 24 November 2008 For the benefit of theRottophiles who continue to read my daily efforts, today I’ve decided to include couple of different angles. The first imagewas taken from North Point, which ‘surprise surprise’ is the northern most part of the island. Because of the excellentviews it was a logical location for a coastal observation and sear chlight facility during WW2. More about that will appearin a future edition of Fremantlebiz.
Point Clune and Bathurst Point lighthouse - Rottnest Island
The image above looks across a short peninsular on the eastern side of Geordie Bay. The northern tip is named PointClune. The navigation markers you can see are to assist small boat operators to enter the Geordie Bay anchorage without
wreaking carnage on the limestone reefs. The anchorage is out of sight to the right of the photo. Beyond the Bathurst Pointlighthouse lies the mainland and Fremantle.
The wartime observers at North Point had a good view of shipping activity in Gage Road, as we did of a couple of dawdling RAN warships a few weeks ago. Lucky it was 2009. They would have been easy pickings for the the island’sWW2 artillery gunners in the early 1940s. Just in case you forgot from the last time I mentioned it, the Gage Road(singular) approach to Fremantle was named in 1826 after a Royal Navy (British) Rear-Admiral Sir William Hall Gage.

The RAN swanning in Gage's Road
I wonder if the Bathurst lighthouse will be still standing in 500 years. It sits above a friable limestone cliff face which isshowing signs of very recent erosion. In the next image you can get an idea of what is going on.
