This third round of Season ‘03brings us thrillingly up against our origi-nal and even daunting promise – MarkLamos’ eagerly awaited production ofPentecost, a play of such drama, excite-ment, risk, and range as to be almostunparalleled in today’s theatre, with

issues concerning the survival of art and its role in our lives thattouch upon every one of us. It is fair to say that few theatres in thecountry would attempt such an ambitious project, and we arethrilled to be the one to do it.

This amazing, sprawling giant of a play could be served up byno other director as gifted and as qualified as Mark, who gave ouraudiences an unforgettable theatrical treat a season ago withCompleat Female Stage Beauty, and he has brought together a trulyinternational company, whipping them into full hue and cry in anevening of unforgettable value and insight. We are honored to hostthe director, the company, and the play.

And then talk about an 180° turn!! We welcome one of themost talented directors in the country, David Petrarca, whom I’vepursued for this theatre for years, and who just enjoyed wonderfulsuccess with his recent A Year with Frog and Toad, a charming musicalwith much of the same adult/child appeal as our own beloved Grinch,but with two green stars of a different hue! And David is here to putRounding Third into the Carter and treat our audiences to the realinside story about Little League Baseball. This play has causedsomething of a sensation in Chicago recently, where it premiered,and we predict sides aching with laughter for our own patrons, sobeware! Welcome, David! And welcome to you mini-baseball fans!

Welcome to The Old Globe! Let me first sayhow much your support of this institution is appre-ciated. As an organization so closely tied to thecommunity, we are deeply aware of how many ofour audience members are connected to thoseinvolved in activities overseas, and we want tohonor those families who have sacrificed so muchfor all of us. During these times we take our role ofservice to this community even more seriously, and

we hope that our artistic productions can bring you all a moment of joy inwhat may be a difficult time.

Our current productions clearly reflect the diverse role this theatre playsin San Diego. Pentecost centers on the survival of an ancient and possibly his-tory-altering fresco under life-threatening circumstances. Rounding Third offersa lighthearted yet touching look at two mismatched Little League coacheswho must find ways to work together for the good of the “team.” Both playsembrace ways of fostering a sense of community amid opposing forces.

Looking ahead, we’re delighted about the recently-announced2003/2004 season, which brings our audiences thrilling works by suchacclaimed masters as Arthur Miller and William Inge, as well as by risingyoung writers, including the recent Pulitzer Prize-winner Nilo Cruz andOlivier Award-winner Joe Penhall. The Globe Studio: Offers adult acting classes, ranging from Basic Actor Training and Scene Study to more advanced work inImprovisation and Shakespeare. At The Old Globe, chil-dren and adults alike

PROGRAMS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Teatro Meta: This initiative is a semester-long,bilingual (English and Spanish) program for middleand high school students. Each year over 300 studentsfrom San Diego County schools work with six bi-lin-gual teaching artists to develop scenes from their ownmyths, resulting in a performance in the Old GlobeTheatre at an annual festival.

The Real Globe: This interactive summer programoffers high school students from all across the UnitedStates a unique camp experience delving intoShakespeare and his work. The program culminates in a workshop production of a Shakespearean play (2003selection: The Tempest). Scholarship assistance for camptuition is available.

Playguides: A program that allows teachers to pur-chase discounted tickets to Globe productions, andbrings the Playguides, a team of teaching artists, into theclassroom to provide a live study guide for the play theywill attend. Additionally, students participate in pre- andpost-show discussions with actors and production staff.

Merlin D. “Tommy” Thompson, the Patron Services Representative at The OldGlobe, dispenses information, assists with the operation of the theatres, gives personalguided tours of the theatres to guests and sells a loyal cadre of subscribers their seasonalticket packages. In 2002, Tommy brought in over $90,000 in sales for The Old Globe!

Tommy started out as a hoofer and ballet dancer, signing on to entertain troops inBurma and India during World War II. By lucky chance, he was invited to ride along inthe jeep with General Joseph Stillwell as he made the historic first transit of the BurmaRoad.

He came to The Old Globe family in 1952, when, still a young serviceman, he wasrecruited to appear in Craig Noel’s production of Mr. Roberts.

Over the years he’s served the Globe as a performer, volunteer, house manager andas the official information minister of Copley Plaza, where he helps hundreds of patronseach week with their questions and concerns. He is a gold mine of information about thepeople and shows that have passed through this company. Stop by and say hello to“Tommy” the next time you are visiting The Old Globe.

While you’re here, let me mention some of the new things happening at The Old Globe over the past fewmonths. One change is the return to our original name, The Old Globe. We’re known throughout the theatricalworld by that name, so we decided to go back to using it ourselves. You’ll see it displayed prominently on ournew web site. You’ll find a lot more that’s new at The Old Globe in the months ahead. Of course, we are committed tobringing meaningful works to you, now and in the future, from the masters of classical theatre like Shakespeareand Moliere. In addition, The Old Globe is now also well known for its presentation of exciting contemporaryworks. In our upcoming 2003-2004 season, for example, we will be offering plays to you by Arthur Miller,William Inge, Tom Stoppard and Nicky Silver, among others.

Louis G. SpistoExecutive DirectorLouis G. Spisto was appointed ExecutiveDirector of The Old Globe in October 2002. Hehas over twenty years experience managing someof this country’s leading arts organizations,where his track record for fiscal as well as artisticleadership has been highly praised. He returns tothe Southern California arts community fromhis most recent position as Executive Director ofAmerican Ballet Theatre in New York City. Whilethere, he increased ticket income and annualcontributions for the organization by nearly 20percent. He also tripled the Ballet’s touringweeks and the resources devoted to educationand training programs. Prior to his position atthe ABT, he served as the President of theDetroit Symphony Orchestra, where he providedfundraising leadership and creative direction forthe orchestra’s $60 million renovation project,and helped dramatically increase ticket saleswhile initiating several new series for the orches-tra. Spisto established a reputation as a superbarts executive here in California, where he spentover ten years as the Executive Director of thePacific Symphony Orchestra in Orange County.During his tenure there, he tripled the orchestra’sannual budget all while eliminating a priordeficit and successfully completing the orches-tra’s first endowment campaign. In addition, heestablished a series of innovative recording pro-jects with Sony Classical and oversaw manynationally-recognized commissioning projects. Astrong advocate of arts education, he built one ofthe largest and most respected music trainingand outreach efforts. During his career, Spistohas also served as Director of Marketing for thePittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Director ofOperations and Development for the PerformingArts Center at UC Berkeley. He holds a Mastersdegree from the University of Wisconsin in ArtsAdministration and a Bachelors of BusinessAdministration from the University of NotreDame, and spent many years acting, directingand producing plays and musicals throughouthis student days, as well as in professional sum-mer theater.

Craig NoelArtistic DirectorCraig Noel was first appointed director in 1939,directing 15 productions prior to World War II,Since then has directed more than 221 plays ofall styles and periods, and produced more than365 (over 40 of which were directed by WilliamRoesch from 1961 through 1976) His visionfrom the Globe during the past 60 years resultedin the establishment of the Shakespeare Festivalin the late '40s, expansion to two theaters in the'50s, Globe Educational Tours in the '70s andTeatro Meta in the '80s. Among recent directori-al assignments were The Pavilion and Over theRiver and Through the Woods. ELSEWHERE: dur-ing the 1940s, dialogue director, 20th CenturyFox Studios: former director, Ernie Pyle Theatre,Tokyo. Honors include the Governor's Award forthe Arts; the mayoral proclamation of "the Yearof Craig Noel" (1987) in San Diego; inclusion inThe San Diego Union's list of 25 persons whoshaped San Diego; 1985 Outstanding Alumnusof the Year, SDSU; Honorary Doctor of HumaneLetters, University of San Diego; a combinedtribute from the Public Arts Advisory Counciland San Diego County Board of Supervisors; themayor's Living Treasure Award; Member, Collegeof Fellows of the American Theatre.
