Medical Surveillance and Workplace Management of Occupational Asthma Speaker: Julia Klees, MD, MPh, FaCOEM Associate Corporate Medical Director, BASF Corporation Adjunct Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, NY

Occupational or Work-related Asthma (WRA) has become the most common form of occupational lung disease in many industrialized countries. 10 to 15% of all prevalent cases of adult asthma may be attributable to occupational factors, with work exacerbation affecting 25% of asthmatics. The medical surveillance and diagnosis of WRA should follow a systematic, step-wise approach, with early diagnosis and avoidance of further exposure offering the best chance of complete recovery.

Join us as Dr. Julia Klees discusses the basics of a medical surveillance program for occupational asthma, workplace evaluation of symptoms, and substance specific program considerations, such as exposure concerns and issues that affect those programs.

Speaker Bio Julia E. Klees is the associate medical director at BASF, a multinational company and the second largest producer of chemicals and related products in North America. Her responsibilities include overseeing the corporate medical surveillance program, fitness for duty assessments, and medical audit programs. She coordinates management of occupational health issues, reproductive hazard assessment, medical emergency response, health promotion and employee assistance programs, workers’ compensation and re-entry from short-term disability. She consults with Environmental Health and Safety on issues of toxicology and industrial hygiene, and contributes to the worldwide BASF Group Chemical Emergency Medical Guidelines.
