MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF JUDGES Judging for the 2014 National Wine Show is now complete. It is a great honour to be able to present the complete catalogue of results and especially the list of trophy winning wines.

This year the team of judges tasted and deliberated their way through some 1226 entries across 192 Australian producers. Judging took place over four days, culminating in the taste off for the trophy winning wines.

Our team of judges brings together an extraordinary degree of experience across many different fields of the Australian and international wine industries, including winemakers, retailers, educators, sommeliers, distributors, commentators and marketers. This depth and diversity of experience helps cast a ‘broad net’ towards finding more of the better wines, across the full spectrum of style and/or regional nuances.

Highlights:

This year the strength of the last three vintages shone.

Starting with aromatic whites from 2014, especially Riesling, there were some lovely expressive, yet pure, wines of great length which really impressed the judges. It was great to see the diversity of style in Australian Riesling, from the timeless citrus & floral classics through to the spicy off dry styles, coming from emerging Riesling regions. I suspect these slightly off dry styles (when well-balanced) might just be the ticket to engaging a whole new market of potential Riesling lovers.

The class of Chardonnay from 2012 & 2013 generated great discussion among the judges, with some great examples out of the Yarra Valley, Margaret River, Adelaide Hills and Tasmania all vying for the top awards.

The wonderful red vintages of 2012 & 2013 really starred, with some extraordinary Shiraz, Cabernet and Pinot Noir wines across many regions being awarded high medals.

Pinot Noir from these two stunning vintages captivated the judges, who looked for wines of great perfume, purity & texture. Here the major Pinot states of Victoria and Tasmania lead the charge. The top wine (and wine of the show!) is a sublime 2013 from the Mornington Peninsula.

Shiraz was another standout with 2012 & 2013. A remarkable 23 Golds were awarded out of 250 entries (just over 9%!) and from no less than 14 regions with a diverse range of styles; a testament to the extraordinary adaptability of our most planted variety.

The famed maritime climate of Margaret River triumphed again this year with some perfectly balanced, medium bodied, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a delicious Cabernet Merlot blend. Cabernet wines from Hilltops, Coonawarra, Barossa, Wrattonbully and Pyrenees also shared in the golds.

Wines of Provenance:

A new development for the 2014 Show was the Wine of Provenance classes. Here exhibitors enter 3 vintages of a wine covering no less than 10 years between the youngest and oldest. These awards are designed to recognise and celebrate vineyards and wines of exceptional provenance, reflecting consistency of style and quality over time. The inaugural winners (white and red) were a set of Rieslings from the Eden Valley and a set of Pinot Noirs from the Mornington Peninsula. Both sets displayed a real thread of personality, coupled with wonderful quality and commanding longevity. Our international judge, David Jean, said this was the most enjoyable and interesting tasting he has done in his many trips to Australia.

The Chair of Judge’s Award went to a lovely local Shiraz Viognier, a beautifully weighted, spicy, red fruited and textural wine of poise, and real sense of place. A gem of a drink!

WINES OF PROVENANCE Classes 41-42

The Wines of Provenance classes were introduced this year to recognise outstanding Australian wines that have shown a consistency of style and quality over many years. Three vintages of the same wine, with the same label, with a vintage spread of at least 10 years, are judged as a group, rather than individually. At least one of the group must be an award winning wine. However, it is expected that all three wines will be of Gold medal standard.
