The Planets – An HD Odyssey Friday 24th June 2016, 7.30pm
Gaze in wonder as NASA images and films are projected onto a 24-foot screen whilst the RPO performs Holst’s awe-inspiring orchestral suite The Planets. This extraordinary multimedia event features the latest high-definition photos and astounding moving images from NASA using material from a multitude of space missions, as well as brief interviews from NASA scientists. These are brought to life musically, complemented by the Orchestra’s performance of Holst’s mystical suite, which was inspired by the contrasting astrological traits and moods of seven planets.
Also featured in this celebration of the cosmos is Strauss’ iconic tone poem Also sprach Zarathustra,with its instantly recognisable opening fanfare, plus John Adams’ exuberant Short Ride in a Fast Machine.

Maestro Charles Dutoit (pictured) conducts Orff’s 20th century choral masterpiece, famed for its musical pyrotechnics and O Fortuna opening, featuring massed choirs and outstanding soloists. Also featured is one of the finest concertos in the classical repertoire, Mendelssohn’s enchanting Violin Concerto, performed by critically acclaimed soloist Chloë Hanslip.
Dvorák’s Cello ConcertoTuesday 29th March 2016, 7.30pm
The brilliant French cellist Gautier Capuçon (pictured) performs Dvorák’s evocative Cello Concerto, in between Respighi’s beautiful symphonic poem Fountains of Rome and one of Stravinsky’s most colourful ballet scores, Petrushka. Conducted by Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Charles Dutoit.

Back by popular demand, the RPO performs the music of Burt Bacharach, one of America’s most prolific songwriters, responsible for dozens of Top 40 hits. An evening of passionate masterpieces from the some of the most eminent composers of the Romantic era, including one of Rachmaninov’s most captivating works, Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, performed by the supremely talented Alexandra Dariescu (pictured). The concert opens with Borodin’s rousing Prince Igor Overture and closes with Tchaikovsky’s epic Symphony No.5, renowned for its hauntingly slow second movement and spirited finale. Not to be missed!

The groundbreaking solo percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie brings her electric magnetism to the stage for a mesmerising performance of a new percussion concerto from acclaimed American composer Michael Daugherty. This special concert will also include a performance of Sibelius’ magnificent Symphony No.5, featuring its elegant ‘swan motif’ in the final movement. Such sublime scoring will leave you feeling utterly uplifted.
